Ever since Unreal Engine 5 was first announced, we have seen a wide number of different game studios all pledging to use Epic Games’ engine for their future titles. It seems Playdead – the studio known best for the indie hits LIMBO and INSIDE will be using UE5 for their next game.

As discovered by ResetEra user ‘deadlygantz’, Danish indie studio Playdead recently posted a job listing for an ‘Experienced Landscape Artist’, where they stated that “Your main responsibilities will be to oversee the production pipeline for the Landscape, work closely with the art department to visually deliver the art style and meet technical performance requirements in Unreal Engine 5.”

This listing all but confirms that the team’s next game (known as Project Rover) will utilise Unreal Engine 5. This is interesting to see, as Playdead has in the past used vastly different tools for their work, with LIMBO being built on a custom engine, and INSIDE utilising Unity.

Unlike these two titles however (which were side-scrolling puzzle platformers), the upcoming Project Rover is said to be an open-world, third-person sci-fi experience, and so perhaps is the reason for this change. Regardless, Playdead’s next game has been long in development, and so hopefully we get to see an official and proper reveal soon.

KitGuru says: What do you think of UE5? Are you excited for Project Rover? Do you prefer LIMBO or INSIDE? Let us know down below.

We recently reported on Epic Games’ new publishing initiative, which saw a number of companies joining under this new deal. One such company was Playdead, the Danish studio responsible for the award winning titles LIMBO and INSIDE. The studio has remained relatively quiet since the release of their last project in 2016, though it looks like the Playdead is finally ready to begin showing off its next title as is evident by a new teaser video published online.

Posted on their Twitter, Playdead showed off the 15 second clip with the caption “Join us on our next project. https://playdead.com/jobs/”. The clip itself doesn’t reveal too much, but shows that the studio will continue with its tried and true method of delivering an ominous 2D side scroller featuring a muted art style with silhouetted figures.

The playable character appears to be standing in front of what looks like a space rover, suggesting that perhaps Playdead’s next project will be taking players to the moon or another planet. Atmosphere is a big aspect to their games, and setting it on a foreign planet would certainly lend itself to very atmospheric visuals and environments.

With the studio still advertising jobs for the project, the game is likely a ways away. The studio’s first game, LIMBO released in 2010, with their second title, INSIDE, not arriving until 6 years later. With this new publishing deal however, the studio now has more support meaning that perhaps their third outing will come sooner rather than later. Both LIMBO and INSIDE were critically acclaimed, so however long it may take, Playdead have earned as much time as they need.

KitGuru says: What do you think of this teaser? How far away do you think the game is? What would you like it to be about? Let us know down below.

Playdead, the developer behind hit indie side-scrollers Inside and Limbo, has teased its next project and it has a similar theme. Dark, shadowy and without much colour, the new game has an art style that should be familiar to anyone who has played Playdead's previous titles, though how it may relate to them remains to be seen.

With countless awards for both of its original titles, Playdead no doubt is aware that it has a bit of a niche within the gaming industry. Its previous work has blended horror, with the exploration of the unknown and ambiguous story telling, to create a unique universe that seems to be at least partially shared across games. It's not clear yet if that is the case with its next game, but it certainly looks like it could.

Announced on the company's Twitter as the “next adventure,” that the co-founder of the company, Arnt Jensen and the rest of the Playdead team are working on, the new game doesn't have a name, but it does have a screenshot. It shows a shadowy, possibly helmeted figure, dragging what looks like a parachute up a hill, while watching something fiery crash down from above.

We could make the jump and say that this is the figure's space ship, or plane, but considering Playdead's art style, it could easily be a meteorite and that parachute could be some sort of shadow monster dragging back our new friend. Who knows at this point.

We may have some time to wait to find out though. Limbo was originally released in 2010 and it took six years for Inside to come out. Although Playdead's team has been working on the new project since Inside was released, that was only six months ago, so we won't keep our eyes peeled for anything new from Playdead for a short while at least.

KitGuru Says: Did you guys enjoy Playdead's previous games? They are quite light on the gameplay, but I adored Inside while it lasted. The secret ending was a bit of a mission to get, but it made for a more deep understanding of the story which is hardly a bad thing.

Playdead, the developer of hit creepy, indie side-scroller, Inside, has ditched anti-tamper software, Denuvo from the game just as the Steam Autumn Sale hit. Considering Denuvo has proved so successful in protecting other games, it's quite a surprising move to see it ditched, especially during a sale period.

Denuvo has been one of the most successful and least intrusive additions to gaming DRM perhaps forever. It works by acting as an anti-tamper system for existing DRM like SECUROM, which prevents the games from being cracked. Just Cause 3 has been out for over a year and has still yet to be made available to pirates.

Inside was a little different though, since its digital protection was bypassed in just six weeks, with the game appearing on torrent sites shortly after. With a version of the game out there in the wild, perhaps there isn't much reason to have such stringent copy protection if all you're doing is making minor tweaks to the game moving forward (thanks PCG).

It could be that even though Denuvo's presence isn't really felt by gamers – especially when compared to more traditional DRM – that Playdead simply wanted to strip its protection back to the minimum, since the game had already been cracked. It could be that Denuvo is paid for on a subscription basis too, so perhaps Playdead simply didn't want to continue paying the bill for something that isn't working.

It did at least work for those first six weeks though. That's the most important period for a game to be protected in, as that's when historically the greatest rates of piracy occur.

KitGuru Says: Now that I'm a little more flush and there are so many services that make game buying, downloading and installing easy, I don't see the need to download games. If you do though, what's you're reasoning?
