While Gears of War has always been published by Microsoft, the IP wasn't always owned by the company. Back when Gears of War was still under Epic Games, the title was used for internal testing purposes, leading to a version of Gears of War 3 for the PlayStation 3. Now, this PS3 version of the game is publicly available for the first time.

Up until 2014, Epic Games owned the Gears of War IP. During development of Gears of War 3, the company prototyped a version of it for the PlayStation 3 as part of a technical test in May 2011, footage of which can be seen below:

To celebrate the 10 year anniversary of this unreleased version of the game, PixelButts, a QA developer and archivist, uploaded the PS3 build of Gears of War 3 to Archive.org. Epic Games previously confirmed that this build of the game was real but was never intended for a release – Unreal Tournament was also used for testing purposes.

Unfortunately, you can't just burn a disc and boost this up on a PlayStation 3, to actually play this build of Gears of War 3, you would need a PS3 Dev Kit.

KitGuru Says: While this build won't be playable for many, it is still nice to see this particular piece of gaming history preserved.

As great as Persona 5 is, the game is held back slightly by being limited to the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 consoles. Many fans managed to work around this by using the RPCS3 PS3 emulator, but it seems this caught the unwanted attention of Atlus, who attempted to file a DMCA takedown strike against the Patreon-funded emulation project.

RPCS3 is currently the most popular PS3 emulator around and has been widely used to run popular games, like Persona 5, which was mentioned a number of times times on the emulator's Patreon page. This led to Atlus attempting to get Patreon to take down the page, as explained in a Reddit post. In an email an Atlus rep said: “The PS3 emulator itself is not infringing on our copyrights and trademarks; however, no version of the P5 game should be playable on this platform; and the RPCS3 developers are infringing on our IP by making such games playable.”

Patreon ultimately rejected the request, stating that emulation falls under fair use and since the page does not specifically infringe on the Persona IP, it shouldn't be removed. Atlus did attempt to tackle it from a different angle, stating that to get the game working on an emulator, they would first need to circumvent DRM, but this didn't seem to make a difference. Still, to avoid any future issues, the RPCS3 team did remove all mentions of Persona 5 from the Patreon page to be on the safe side.

In a separate statement, Atlus explained its side of the story a bit more, adding that it didn't want fans' first experiences with Persona 5 to involve frame rate drops, crashes and other annoyances. There is a compromise to be found here though, it seems this situation has opened Atlus's eyes to the possibility of a PC version: “We understand that many Persona fans would love to see a PC version. And while we don’t have anything to announce today, we are listening. We want to continue having a dialogue about where and how you would like to play our games. Please let us know what you think.”

KitGuru Says: Persona 5 was a critically acclaimed game and sold well, so I don't understand why Atlus wouldn't have capitalised on that by green-lighting versions for other platforms already. Going after the RPCS3 emulator also seems to have backfired, as all it has done is brought more light to the fact that there is a working PS3 emulator currently available.

Constrained amount of internal storage is one of the major limitations of Sony Corp.’s PlayStation 4 video game system, but fortunately the hard drive of PS4 is user upgradeable. Specially for those, who want not only to expand internal storage capacities of their PlayStation 4 consoles, but also to speed them up a bit, Seagate Technology now offers solid-state hybrid drives for such systems.

The Seagate Game Drive for PlayStation is a solid-state hard disk drive (SSHD) with 1TB capacity and 8GB NAND flash cache designed to speed-up launch of frequently used applications. The SSHD automatically learns which sectors of the drive are accessed regularly and places them into the NAND flash cache, enabling faster system boot and game loading. The drive is compatible with both PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.

seagate_laptop_sshd

In general, the Game Drive from Seagate is just another solid-state hybrid drive with Adaptive Memory technology and self-learning capabilities, but this time it is offered specifically for Sony’s PlayStation consoles.

Earlier this year KitGuru took a look at the performance of PlayStation 4 with SSHD and found that upgrade of the internal drive to Seagate’s solid-state hybrid drive makes sense.

The Seagate Game Drive for PlayStation is available today for €109. Meanwhile, a 1TB SSHD for laptop personal computers costs around £70.

KitGuru Says: While the upgrade of PlayStation 4 storage makes a great sense, it is unknown why Seagate wants to sell its Game Drive for PlayStation at such a high premium compared to the PC version.

Although many people would like to use their PlayStation 3 game discs on their PlayStation 4 game consoles, Sony Computer Entertainment does not have plans to enable backwards compatibility with previous-gen titles.

Initially, neither Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox One nor Sony Corp.’s PlayStation 4 were compatible with games designed for previous-generation game consoles. Last year Sony started to offer select PS3 games on its PlayStation Now cloud streaming service, which means that gamers have to pay for titles they already own. By contrast, Microsoft last week announced plans to make select X360 titles playable on Xbox One natively.

Microsoft’s backwards compatibility approach is a little bit friendlier to customers and naturally makes the company’s new-gen systems more appealing to Xbox 360 owners. Unfortunately, Sony has no intention to follow Microsoft with backwards compatibility initiative. Sony claims that it has better things to do with its software engineers.

“We are just taking two different approaches,” said Jim Ryan, president and chief executive officer of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, in an interview with MCV. “Unfortunately there are just not sufficient enough software engineers in the world for everyone to do everything. Each platform holder has to make their choices, we made one and they made another. Their choice is entirely legitimate, and I think our choice is legitimate, too. In some ways it is quite nice to have points of difference between the two platforms, and people will decide which approach suits them best.”

sony_playstation_4

According to Sony, not a lot of people actually want to play older games, which makes it less tempting for the company to invest in backwards compatibility.

“We have experience of backwards compatibility,” said Mr. Ryan. “The earliest PS3 model was backwards compatible with PS2, and it is a much requested feature, but actually it is not so greatly used.”

KitGuru Says: If backwards compatibility significantly improves sales of Xbox One, then Sony will have no choice, but to develop something similar. If the move does not help Microsoft’s console, Sony will not invest anything in native backwards compatibility.

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. has announced that it will bring games for its PlayStation and PlayStation 2 platforms to its PlayStation Now streaming service in the longer-term future. While a nice thing is that it will be possible to enjoy good-old titles on PlayStation Now-supporting hardware eventually, it is completely unclear when this is set to happen.

At present Sony offers over a hundred of PlayStation 3 video games on its PlayStation Now cloud streaming service. This allows the company to sell games on the PS3 platform and to provide PlayStation 4 owners an ability to play previous-generation titles. However, many core gamers are eager to play classic titles some of which are up to 20 years old, something that is not possible to do on existing game consoles.

“There are some amazing games for PS1 and PS2 and our longer term vision is to go back further into the PlayStation generational library and offer those with PlayStation Now,” said Peter Jamshidi, director of marketing of PlayStation Now streaming service at the Sony Computer Entertainment America, reports GameSpot. “Right now however, we are focused on bringing to users experiences from the amazing PS3 library.”

Sony believes that there are many PlayStation 4 owners who never owned a PlayStation 3 or had a chance to play some of the games it offered. As a result, the company is focused on bringing PS3 games to its cloud platform first.

Earlier this month SCEA outlined two subscription plans for its PlayStation Now cloud streaming service: one month for $19.99, or a three-month package for $44.99. The subscription provides access to a large and diverse catalog of PS3 games, ranging from action to RPG and everything in-between.

PlayStation Now will also be coming to Samsung TVs in the future.

KitGuru Says: Adding PS1 and PS2 games to the PlayStation Now catalogue will not only make the cloud streaming service even better, but it will also make the company’s PlayStation 4 consoles more competitive (against Xbox On1) since a lot of people would prefer to have an opportunity to relive their experience that is now 20, 15 or 10 years away. It will be interesting to see what Microsoft plans to do in order to provide something similar on the Xbox One…

If you have problems with the Playstation 3 controller and prefer the much improved Dual Shock 4 then it might interest you to know that the gamepad is now fully compatible with Sony's last gen console.

The latest PS3 firmware update will allow users to wirelessly connect their PS4 controllers. Reddit user, “shafiggy16” has posted a tutorial on how to get it all working but the process is relatively straight forward.

In order to connect a Dualshock 4 you just need to go in to your PS3's settings and select “manage bluetooth devices”, while the PS3 console is scanning hold down the share button as well as the PS button on the PS4 controller and it will connect.

The Dualshock 4 will be able to power on the PS3 but you won't be able to power it down from within a game.

Over the years Hollywood has become increasingly interested in the world of video games with many major franchises being considered for theatrical release and now, The Last of Us is one of them. According to Deadline, Sony subsidiary, Screen Gems, will be creating the film while the game's Creative Director, Neil Druckmann, will be penning the script in conjunction with other members of the Naughty Dog team.

Sam Raimi's production company, Ghost House, which worked on a remake of the Evil Dead last year, will be collaborating with Screen Gems and Naughty Dog to make the film happen. Screen Gems President, Clint Culpepper, was drawn to the game upon seeing the quality of the story telling: “When I saw the quality of the storytelling, I knew the audience for this project was far greater than just the gaming community and that Neil Druckmann must write the screenplay.”

In the past there has been talks of many video game franchises turning to film, Mass Effect was due to become a film along with Assassin's Creed. Peter Jackson was also supposedly in talks to create a Halo movie many years ago and so far none of these have panned out but this one seems like it could actually come to fruition.

KitGuru Says: The Last of Us was praised for its cinematic qualities so a film adaptation might not be too hard to pull off. That said, we haven't seen many games successfully transition in to cinema so we'll have to wait and see. What do you guys think about this? Would you rather film studios would leave games alone?

Just several days ahead of of the PlayStation 4 launch in Japan, Sony Computer Entertainment announced that global sales of the PS4 had surpassed 5.3 million units. The new number exceeds the amount of the latest consoles that Sony originally planned to sell during the fiscal year 2014 and underlines unprecedented success of the PlayStation 4 among core gamers.

Sony Corp. sold through 5.3 million PlayStation 4 units worldwide as of the 8th of February, 2014, so actual life-to-date sales of the PS4 are even higher. Moreover, as Sony starts to sell the new console in Japan on the 22nd of February, expect total sell-through number to increase to over six million units by early next week.

“I am thrilled that so many customers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play throughout and beyond the holiday season,” said Andrew House, president and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment.

sony_playstation_4_6

Sony originally intended to sell five million PlayStation 4 consoles during the fiscal 2014 (which ends on the 31st of March, 2014). By now, the planned number has been exceeded and it looks like the company will sell considerably more than expected just about half a year ago. For comparison, only 3.53 million of PlayStation 3 consoles were sold during the fiscal year 2006 (ended in March ’07).

“We are delighted that according to the NPD Group’s latest data, PS4 was January’s top-selling console in the United States,” said Mr. House. “The PS4 system’s momentum just keeps growing stronger, and we are extremely grateful for the continued passion and support of PlayStation fans. February 22 sees the launch of PS4 in Japan, and I’m looking forward to Japanese fans sharing the excitement of the deep social capabilities and entertainment experiences only possible on PS4.”

KitGuru Says: The success of the PlayStation 4 among core games is evident and is likely to be higher than Sony originally anticipated. What remains to be seen is how successful will the platform be among mainstream gamers and whether it can replicate success of the PlayStation 2 eventually.

Sony Corp.’s PlayStation 2 remained on the market for 12 long years, a record that was only beaten by Nintendo’s NES and SNES game consoles which were available for 20 and 13 years on the Japanese market, respectively. Sony now claims that its aging PlayStation 3 could also live on the market for another two to four years, extending its lifespan to 12 years.

“We believe that the platform has a lot of life left in it,” said John Koller, vice president of marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America, in an interview with GameSpot. “Two, three, four years; we think there's time left in the platform.”

Two factors that greatly affect viability of a gaming platform are availability of new content as well as the price. Before Sony and Microsoft make the first price-cut on their new-generation platforms, many gamers will continue to use the PS3 and X360, which is why game developers will keep releasing new titles for them. Moreover, some of Sony’s first-party studios could also develop certain games for the PS3. An executive from Electronic Arts recently said that EA would release new games for the PS3 and X360 for a couple of years.

“It depends on the content. We have a good lineup this year and it looks like a good lineup next year. We need to keep fueling that. We really have to keep PS3 alive. And so to do that, we have to further the content. I think there will be a good story for the PS3 over the next year to two years,” said Mr. Koller.

sony_playstation3_white

The question of the PS3's price is a lot tougher. The PS2 managed to remain relevant for a long time because of its low cost and broad software support, which triggered its popularity in developing countries and attracted price-conscious buyers in the U.S. and Europe.

While the PlayStation 3 console is seven years old, it is believed that it is still pretty expensive to build, which makes it harder for Sony to make further price-cuts. At present the PS3 12GB and the PS3 500GB cost $199 and $269, respectively, in the U.S. (£149 and £199 in the UK). The price of Sony PlayStation 2 was slashed to $129 in April 2006 (5.5 years after the introduction in the U.S.), and to $99 in April, 2009 (8.5 years after the launch). The PS3 is not following the PS2 price-slash pattern, which is why it may simply not meet requirements of price-conscious buyers until it gets too outdated. Moreover, PS3 games are more expensive than PS2 games, which is another disadvantage of the platform.

KitGuru Says: What is the point of keeping PS3 hardware on the market for two – four years in the light of Sony’s plan to offer PlayStation 3 games streamed to various devices using PlayStation Now service?

With the release of new-generation consoles, interest towards the previous-generation systems drops rapidly among core gamers. Nonetheless, platform owners continue to sell outdated systems for some time after that. An executive from a leading game publisher believes that the current-gen PS3 and Xbox 360 will stay on the market for several years.

Sony PlayStation 2 was on the market for about 12 years. By contrast, the original Microsoft Xbox was on sale for around five or six years. The current-generation platforms – Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3 – will barely remain on the market for well over a decade, but will not disappear overnight after the almost simultaneous launch of their successors, believes the president of Electronics Arts, one of the world’s largest publishers of games.

“I would anticipate seeing both Sony and Microsoft get behind their current-gen platforms at least for the next two years and bring us to a ten-year cycle as we saw in the previous cycle,” said Peter Moore, president and chief operating officer of Electronic Arts, during a conference call with financial analysts and investors.

Microsoft Xbox 360 could be a nice console for the emerging markets: it is inexpensive to manufacture and it supports a rich library of excellent games. Sony’s PlayStation 4 is also supported by many popular good-looking titles, but it is still expensive in manufacturing, hence, Sony may not be interested in popularization of the platform.

microsoft_xbox_360_new_2

While it is clear that game developers will support the PS3 and the X360 for a couple of years with new games, it is obvious that they will focus primarily on new-generation game consoles since they will need to attract attention to them by showing how much better they are. While some future titles for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 may look better than their predecessors, they majority will look just like their ancestors today.

While upcoming games for PS3 and X360 may not be really extraordinary, the lack of backwards compatibility of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will likely catalyze many fans of popular titles to renew their hardware in 2015 – 2016 to be able to play the older titles eventually.

KitGuru Says: Perhaps, Microsoft and Sony are actually interested to keep the X360 and the PS3 on the market. A percentage of core gamers might even purchase them to play older games. However, it is hard to imagine casual gamers getting those consoles for any decent amount of money (remember that every console game can cost $30 – $50 [or £25 – £50] and it makes no sense to sell a console at a price of a couple of games since customers looking for affordable entertainment are not going to buy expensive titles) keeping in mind that there are loads of games for modern platforms like smartphones and tablets…

That's it so far but remember that single player portions of these games will still be playable. Sony has a handy little list of games that you can still play online which it updates when a game is getting the axe so gamers know how long they have left to play the online portions of these games.

KitGuru Says: The multiplayer modes on these games are probably dead at this point anyway, there's no point keeping servers around if nobody is playing the game. Were any of you guys still playing online on any of these titles?

If you've been waiting for Rockstar to give you a reason to pop back into Los Santos then this could be your week, as Grand Theft Auto V's online creator beta will be launching any day now, so keep an eye out.

Online players will now be able to create and participate in deathmatches and races. Job creation will also be available for the following modes:

  • Deathmatch
  • Team Deathmatch
  • Race
  • Rally Race
  • GTA Race

Rockstar will be watching your creations come to life and mark the best ones as ‘Rockstar Verified' and push those out to all players. Later this month a new team mode will be launched, it's called Capture and it sounds pretty fun. It puts players in teams of up to four, which will then invade enemy territory to steal pickups such as cars or items. More details on this new mode will come closer to release.

GTA-Online

Amongst all of this, the Online mode will continue to grow during 2014 but that's not all- Rockstar has also announced that it will be bringing new story content out next year.

KitGuru Says: Grand Theft Auto V keeps expanding and improving, which is all well and good for console gamers but us PC gamers are still being left in the dark as to when we'll get to play the game. Nobody wants to buy a last generation console just to play one game.

Will any of you guys be checking out GTA Online's new features?

The PS4 is coming out next month but thats not to say the Playstation 3 doesn't have life left in it, although it might not be as long as you think. Worldwide Studios president, Shuhei Yoshida, in an interview with Games Industry, said that while the PS3 won't get the 5 years extra that the PS2 enjoyed, it still has a good couple of years left.

Microsoft already announced it's intentions to keep supporting the Xbox 360 until 2016 with around 100 new games for the system. Sony will work with a similar time frame although Yoshida did say, naturally the amount of AAA titles will deteriorate, but with digital and indie releases Sony will  look at supporting PS3,PS4 and the Vita.
“We'll continue to support PS3 in a way that makes sense, especially the digital games that we work on – but our large teams, our AAA release teams, are transitioning from PS3 to PS4.”

ps3-ps4

Continued support for the PS3 is necessary because while the it's doing well, not everybody who wants one has one yet. There are always people who come really late to a cycle or wait for massive price drops, and those people are going to want to play games too. The same goes for people who can't afford a new PS4 right away, they can continue to play on the PS3 for a bit longer without missing out on absolutely everything.

KitGuru Says: I have a wishlist on Amazon filled with about 50 PS3 exclusives I never got a chance to play because I missed out on the cycle, so I understand that there are late comers. Gaikai was supposed to be the PS4 alternative to backwards compatibility but that is only going to be available in the US for now, Europe just doesn't have good the Internet speeds for it yet. Are there any games you guys missed out on this generation?

Soul Calibur is a long running franchise of fighting games and many might remember it's fourth iteration for featuring either Darth Vader or Yoda, depending on which console you bought it on. Well now it's getting a free to play version on the not-quite-dead-yet PlaySatation 3.

This free to play game will be called Soul Calibur: Lost Swords and is said to bridge the gap between Soul Calibur 4 and Soul Calibur 5.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9OmSf_CefVA'] The gameplay trailer debuted at the Tokyo game show this week.

The new game will bring a couple of extra features to the franchise, most notably, item discovery and a weapon forging system. We don't know exactly what these features do yet, but they probably work exactly how they sound. Items are most likely discovered through replaying fight sequences and achieving certain objectives during them. Once you have a compatible weapon and item, I expect you'll be able to fuse them together, making your weapon stronger, much like in the Nintendo franchise ‘Kid icarus'. Elemental style fighting mechanics are said to have been worked into the Soul Calibur 5 engine too, so ready your wind, water, fire and earth.

The only characters confirmed so far are Mitsurugi and Siegfried, although more should be announced soon. There is no word yet on what will be included in the game to make the free to play model profitable or an exact release date although, it is coming out during the Winter season.

KitGuru Says: I enjoyed the Soul Calibur games when I was younger. As long as Namco Bandai doesn't start withholding any series favourite characters to sell them as DLC or make it an arcade style pay for more lives game, then this could be worth checking out.

In efforts to unify its online services, Sony is about to change the name of its now 4 year running “PlayStation Network” (PSN) to the “Sony Entertainment Network” (SEN). SEN which was previously named Qriocity represents all of Sony's online streaming services including games, video, music and eBooks and up until now has been available to varied extents around the world on a range of Sony's devices including some of its BRAVIA TV's and of course the PS3.

The move to turn the PSN into SEN is scheduled to take place at some stage today and will occur as a purely aesthetic change at this time, meaning there will be no service disruptions during the transition apart from a software update becoming available for both the PS3 and PS Vita that rolls in the rebranding and renames PSN accounts to SEN accounts. At the time of the update, users will also need to agree to new policies in order to continue using their account. The updated agreements give explanation to the location-based services for the PS Vita and list changes to parental controls for sub-master accounts.

As a result of merging all of Sony's online services together in this re-branding move, the company has said it will make for an easier means as a PSN account holder to access other non-game services such as Music Unlimited, Video Store and PlayMemories Online (previously called Personal Space) using a variety of network-connected devices.

This transition is based on Sony’s goal to enhance its unique digital entertainment offering. As a series of these activities Sony started last September, PlayStation Network will be aligned with “Sony Entertainment Network.” This helps us get closer to our goal of establishing a global comprehensive network platform of services across games, movies, music and more, all accessible from one convenient account“.

KitGuru says: Perhaps also a much welcomed move due to last year's hacking frenzy tarnishing the PSN branding.

There can't be many people on the planet who don't know who James Bond is. Despite the fact that new heroes like Bourne successfully managed to make the whole ‘rogue agent' genre their own, the digits double-0 seven still stimulate the imagination.

With the release of this new game, the legendary James Bond returns with new modes and multiplayer options.

For example, you have MI-6 missions – separate from the campaign – where you can try to achieve Assault, Elimination, Stealth and Defense objectives.

It sounds good and was a long time in the making, but was it worthwhile ?  Here's what we saw and thought at an exclusive Playstation Access event, prior to launch.

KitGuru says: The original game never really enthused the KitGuru gaming collective – with everyone in the office exhibiting some sign of remembered frustration when the title is mentioned. We're not 100% convinced about the new one either. If they want to create a sequel, then a LOT of consideration needs to take place first – to avoid wasting anyone's time and money.

Sony have announced that they are planning to move older PSP titles onto the PS3, but this won't be a plain ole emulator. The electronics giant want to remaster the old games and add new content, high definition graphics, support for DualShock 3 controllers and even in some cases 3D stereoscopic support.

They have released the first title in Japan only, Monster Hunter Portable 3rd. Cleverly they have worked out a system to transfer the saved game progress between PS3 and PSP, so if you change console mid game you can continue where you left off.

Games in this series are also set to work with Sony's Ad Hoc multiplayer service. This means that someone playing a PSP title on a PS3 will still be able to play with other gamers playing the game on their PSP. The Ps3 will work as a wireless access point between the PSP and PS3.

KitGuru says: No more information on what will be coming up and what will be reaching the UK and US audiences, but there are a lot of classic older titles that would look great with some TLC.

It has been impossible to have missed the recent Sony Playstation Network problems. If you have, then follow the story from the start with this search term. Many people had assumed that Sony would lose a huge portion of their user base, but evidentally this might not be the case.'

Some reports in the UK have indicated that Playstation 3 sales dropped in recent weeks, due to the online downtime and high profile security issues which hit the mainstream press. Once a story like this hits the mainstream press such as SKY NEWS, you can be sure that people will panic. GameStop president Tony Bartel told Dow Jones Newswires that while sales were lower in recent weeks, that they have improved this week since Sony restored the network. Playstation 3 editions of L.A. Noire are apparently flying off the shelves. Speaking with UK retailers, the same game was a high preorder and as it goes on sale today, results should be filtering in over the next week.

Embarrassingly for Sony the network was down again on Wednesday morning with a ‘The server is currently down for maintenance' message highlighted for anyone attempting to enter the SONY store. Big Vern, a well known Techland commenter said “I nearly bought a second hand 360 this week – so i could play BOPS online. I only bought a PS3 to play online, so it's like a brick to me at the moment. If it continues much longer, with no definitive timeline, i probably will just trade it in and get a new (Xbox) 360… It's not the length of time that its taking that is the most annoying thing, it's the vague (non)update every 4 days or so.”

LA Noire: keeping the PS3 dream alive

Others are more forgiving, saying that Sony have been the target of a very skilled group of hackers (or a lone individual) intent on causing as much destruction and mayhem as possible. Clearly sales this week are an indication that Sony's user base haven't jumped ship, just yet.

PCWorld commenter MikeDePewnbsa however has a more damning view of the situation “This is amazing…I think that Sony will never be the same again. Now I'm sure that there are the few people that will stick with them no matter what. And Sony is playing it off as being just a simple problem. But with all the reports that PS3 sales are down and they are seeing an influx of trade-ins seems pretty big deal to me.”

How much has this all hurt Sony? Initial reports were a staggering $1billion loss, when factoring in down time, and other costs, but Reuters latest reports have recently doubled to $2 billion, which if accurate is going to seriously hurt the electronics giant.

KitGuru says: Are you still a proud owner of a Playstation 3?

Sony have been in the limelight in recent weeks thanks to their high profile campaign against the hacking audience who have been breaking into the Playstation 3 and compromising their technology. Reports floating around the news wire indicate that they might be looking to hire some hackers to help them patch their configurations.

Sony are currently on a legal rampage. Kitguru has reported on this many times in recent week, and the latest news hit today that they have legal access now to paypal accounts and IP logs to find people abusing their flagship gaming platform. Hacker George Hotz has landed himself neck deep in legal action.

MSNBC reported on a claim that a recruiter for Sony Computer Entertainment America called Sarah McRae has contacted hacker Koushik Dutta for a possible job position within the organisation. Dutta posted a screen capture of the emails, although images are fairly easy to manipulate so no one can verify their truth.

Amazing the images you can find online, apparently this PS3 grill is real.

McRae said that she works for Sony's euphemistically-named ‘Talent Acquisition Department.' “We came across your blog,” she said to Dutta, “and thought we'd reach out to you to see if you'd ever be interested in exploring opportunities with us here at SCEA. I am in the process of opening a Software Engineer role within our R&D team and you may be a good fit.”

Dutta's response to the e-mail airs the views that there wont be snowballs chance in hell of this happening. “I appreciate that you reached out to me,” Dutta replied, “[and] the opportunity does sound very interesting. However, due [to] Sony's recent treatment of a fellow hacker, George Hotz, I could not in good conscience work at Sony.”

The Sony press department has failed to make any statements to the press and emails sent to McRae have apparently received no reply, although some have said that the emails didn't bounce back, indicating that the person does actually work for Sony on some level.

KitGuru says: Would Sony hire a hacker? Anti Virus firms have been known to hire virus and trojan creators to strengthen their teams before, so it is possible.

Sony have been successful in their court battles against hacker George Hotz. Bad news for them however this weekend because Mathieu Hervais, another hacker has found a way to exploit the 3.56 firmware from the company.

Afterdawn.com have said that Hervais will not release the details online, probably for fear of prosecution by the heavy handed Sony legal team. he has said on Twitter however “I hesitated a lot before tweeting about it, but a bug allows exploiting metldr, the bootloader and 3.56+. I don't intent to ever unveil it… So much for “unhackable” ps3s though.”

Hervais said he is not after fame or attention from the public (or Sony for that matter), but he wanted to let people know the bug is there for the finding.

George Hotz has already fallen foul of the Sony legal team as the U.S. Federal court have granted Sony access to the list of Internet IP addresses of whoever visited Hotz's website since January of 2010. Furthermore, the judge placed subpoenas on Google, Twitter and YouTube so they will give data to those who could have had access to information released by Hotz. Sony are now seeking to get damages from Hotz, however we aren't sure if he has a lot of money to give them.

Sony are not sitting back and taking this lightly, they have said that they are taking legal action against anyone who posts the hacking tools or the encryption key released by Hotz. Hotz might be sorry now that he ever got involved in hacking the PS3. His hack used the ‘OtherOS' function in the system, but Sony have since removed this feature from the platform to protect the machine aganist potential hacks.

KitGuru says: Sony are fighting back, and hard.

Last month KitGuru reported that LG were trying to ban the Playstation 3 from the USA. It appears, based on latest reports that shipments of the black shiny console will be running dry as custom officials are ordered to seize European shipments also.

This court ordered ban on imports was initated due to LG winning a preliminary injunction against Sony in a patent spat over the BluRay technology included in the console.

Sony import over 100,000 consoles into Europe every single week so if this ban is held for more than the current 10 day restriction it may prove difficult to get hold of the console. LG also applied for the same ban in other countries such as the USA, but that has yet to be decided.

Patent disputes are the problem for Sony, and if LG win the case then Sony will be forced to pay a licensing fee for every Playstation 3 console ever sold worldwide. As that relates to 40 million consoles at this point, it could prove an expensive defeat for Sony with potentially hundreds of millions of dollars at stake.

KitGuru says: The Playstation 3 consoles are being held right now in the Rotterdam and Schiphol airport, the main shipping import locations for Europe hardware.

LG Electronics won't be too popular among gamers with the recent reports that they are lodging a patent infringement against Japanese hardware giant Sony. They want the Playstation 3 to be banned from the USA.

LG are saying that the console is infringing upon LG patents related to the playback of BluRay discs. The Korean company are saying that “certain electronic devices having a Blu-Ray Disc player and components thereof” infringe patents held by LG, and then names the Playstation 3 directly.

Sony have said that LG want “a permanent exclusion order… excluding from entry to the United States Sony's Accused Products that infringe one or more claims of the asserted patents.”

To make matters worse, the Playstation 3 isn't the only Sony hardware under the suit, as LG claim the Bravia televisions with Bluray playback functionality are also infringing their patents. It seems highly unlikely that LG will get a successful outcome, but if they manage to do it, then it will certain cause concern for Sony.

KitGuru says: Playstation 3 banned from the USA? Would you be happy with that?

It has been a long time coming, but a hacking group called ‘fail0verflow' have announced that they have deciphered the private key that Sony uses to authorise code to run on PlayStation 3 systems. With access to this private key, code can be run as if it was authorised by Sony.

The hacking group announced this during a presentation at Chaos Communications Conference and with this access to the private key it opens a huge number of options, such as the ability to run linux on the console no matter what version of firmware is running at the time. While this could be used for game piracy, the hackers claim that this was not their goal.

fail0verflow are planning a demo at the conference and more details will be passed over explaining how it all works. The same team incidentally were responsible for the Wii Homebrew Channel. Hacking this private key is a very complex process and no one has yet been able to achieve it. We are pretty sure that Sony will be fuming, especially as it opens up a myriad of possibilities for games to be played, even without bluray discs.

Sony have no means yet to deal with this key being broken, but we are sure they already are having board meetings behind closed doors as to what they can do to try and block piracy.

KitGuru says: A major kick in the teeth for Sony's flagship console.
