Sony Corp. on Thursday announced that global shipments of its latest PlayStation 4 video game consoles have surpassed 25 million units. Apparently, sales of PS4 are not only good, by they exceed shipments of all competing products from Microsoft Corp. and Nintendo combined.

Sony Computer Entertainment managed to sell whopping three million PlayStation 4 video game systems in the first quarter of its fiscal 2016 (which corresponds to the Q2 of calendar 2015), which exceeded its expectations. Life-to-date sales of Sony PlayStation 4 have reached 25.3 million units worldwide, based on financial reports from the platform holder.

In the Q2 of 2015 sales of PS4 not only exceeded sales of its main rival, Microsoft’s Xbox One, but left behind combined shipments of all four competing platforms, including Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U and Wii. Keeping in mind that Sony’s PlayStation 4 dominates select markets with 90 per cent share, it is not surprising that the console outsells its rivals.

Typically, sales of video game consoles drop in Q1 and Q2 and then recover in Q3 and Q4. Shipments of Sony’s PS4 managed to increase both sequentially and year-over-year in the second quarter of 2015. It is clear why PS4 performs better than the industry, but it is rather surprising that it performs better than it should in this part part of the year. Perhaps, Sony can finally fulfill demand for its latest console and gamers who could not obtain the hardware before got the device in the second quarter of the year.

One of the companies, who benefits from record sales of PlayStation 4 is Advanced Micro Devices, which sells Sony the most expensive component of the console, its system-on-chip featuring eight AMD x86 cores and AMD Radeon graphics processing unit. AMD receives from $75 to $100 per every PS4 SoC. Hence, the success of the gaming system means a lot of additional money for the chip designer.

Phil Spencer, corporate vice president of Microsoft Game Studios, recently confirmed that cumulative sales of Xbox One had exceeded 11.6 million units. VGChartz, which gathers data from various market tracking companies like NPD Group, Media Create and Gfk, asserts that Microsoft so far has sold 13 million of Xbox One game systems. Life-to-date sales of Nintendo Wii U are slightly over 10 million units.

KitGuru Says: Looks like Sony’s PlayStation 4 is the fastest game console to reach 25 million unit sales milestone in just six quarters on the market. In fact, PS4 has already outsold both Nintendo GameCube (21.74 million) and Microsoft Xbox (24.65 million). What remains to be seen is how long will lifespan of PlayStation 4 be. Will it set a new sales record, like PlayStation 2 did with 157.7 million units sold? Or will it be replaced in several years from now in a bid to provide better experience to gamers with something that has higher performance? Only time will tell.

This year Sony Corp.’s PlayStation 4 turns two years old and normally it is time to cut the price of the system in order to increase its sales. But while it is logical for Sony to reduce the price of the console, Sony claims that PS4  is doing so well that no price-cut is needed. In Europe PlayStation 4 has at least 70 per cent market share.

“Well, we have market leadership in every country in Europe, and have very significant market leadership in continental Europe,” said Jim Ryan, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, in an interview with VG247. “Extremely significant. I don’t think market-share’s any less than 70%, and frequently greater than 90% in continental Europe.”

Adoption of new-generation game consoles from both Sony and Microsoft is very rapid, but in some countries Sony’s systems seems to be particularly successful. In order to outsell Sony’s PlayStation 4 in the U.S. and the U.K., Microsoft had to cut the price of its Xbox One already in late 2014 and early 2015. By contrast, Sony seems to be happy with sales of its PS4 as well as its price.

“Particularly in Europe… our momentum is still very considerable,” said Mr. Ryan “We are happy with the price and we’re happy with the value proposition. Consumers, equally and more importantly, appear to be happy with the price and the value proposition. We’ll leave it where it is for now.”

Platform holders never confirm price-cuts before they are made, therefore, it is not surprising that Sony denies any of such plans. However, if sales of PS4 are so great, the company may be reluctant to reduce the price of its system. Typically, console developers lose money on hardware, which is why postponing reduction to the next year could help Sony to improve its profitability.

KitGuru Says: While Sony may not need a price-cut, the company may actually decide to reduce the price of its system to stimulate demand and better fight against platforms like PCs or mobile devices.

Sony Corp.’s PlayStation 4 continues to demonstrate incredible sales dynamics never seen before in the history of video game consoles. At the Game Developers Conference the platform holder revealed that cumulative sales of PS4 systems had surpassed 20 million units worldwide.

As of the 1st of March, 2015, sales of Sony PlayStation 4 to end users surpassed 20.2 million units, according to estimates by Sony. In calendar 2015 the company managed to sell around 1.7 million PlayStation 4 consoles, despite of the fact that sales of hardware are traditionally slow in the first quarter. The console demonstrates the fastest and strongest growth in PlayStation hardware history.

“We are so grateful for the enormous support from PlayStation fans worldwide, and we are truly humbled that gamers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play,” said Andrew House, President and Global CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment. “We remain steadfast in our commitment to deliver unique and interactive entertainment experiences powered by the network and the PS4 system’s deep social capabilities.”

As reported back in January, Sony PlayStation 4 outsells not only its predecessor in the same period of its lifecycle, but also PlayStation 2, which is the most successful game console ever. While it is unlikely that Sony’s current system will have a life-cycle comparable to that of its legendary ancestor, it is likely that the company will still sell loads of its PS4 consoles.

At present Sony PlayStation 4 system is available in 123 countries and regions worldwide. Wide availability and moderate price are believed to be keys to success of Sony’s PS4.

KitGuru Says: Sales dynamics of Sony’s PlayStation 4 continues to impress. What is especially important for the personal computer world is that with every PS4 sold, Advanced Micro Devices gets additional money, which it needs to stay competitive against Intel and Nvidia.

Perhaps, new generation game consoles are considerably less powerful than the majority of gaming PCs; perhaps, they are not going to stay on the market for a really long time, like their predecessors. But here is a fact: Microsoft Xbox One and Sony PlayStation 4 are selling dramatically faster than their ancestors.

After around fifteen months on the market, life-to-date sales of Sony PlayStation 4 have exceeded 18.5 million units. While exact LTD shipments of Microsoft’s Xbox One are unknown, it is highly likely that they are around 15 million units. Neither PlayStation 3 nor Xbox 360 could boast with similar installed base after five quarters of the market, according to NPD Group, a leading market tracking company from the U.S.

sony_playstation_4

“The combined hardware install base of PS4 and Xbox One is close to 60 per cent higher than the cumulative hardware totals for Xbox 360 and PS3 at the same point in their lifecycles (after 15 months),” said Liam Callahan, an analyst with NPD.

There are many reasons why PS4 and XB1 are so popular: gamers were anticipating them impatiently for a very long time, the consoles are not very expensive, there are a lot of new games that provide excellent experience, there are now more gamers than they were a decade ago. All-in-all, it is not surprising why Microsoft Xbox One and Sony PlayStation 4 are more popular than predecessors.

microsoft_xbox_one_no_kinect

Apart from Microsoft, Sony and software developers, there is one company that greatly benefits from rapid shipments growth of the new consoles, Advanced Micro Devices. AMD's system-on-chip featuring eight x86 “Jaguar” cores as well as custom Radeon “GCN” graphics processor power both PS4 and XB1. According to analysts from IHS, AMD charged $110 and $100 for the XB1 and the PS4 SoCs, respectively, back in November, 2013. While the prices got lower now, the chip designer clearly receives tens of millions of dollars every quarter for its console system-on-chips.

KitGuru Says: Given that sales of both new-generation consoles are rather good now, it will be very interesting to see whether both companies will cut prices of their consoles significantly this year, or will not. Microsoft does sell its Xbox One below the official price-point because of “temporary” discount in the U.S. and promotion campaigns in Europe. However, Sony continues to maintain the price of its PlayStation 4. But keeping such good sales in mind, companies may decide to sell the consoles with their current price tags for one more holiday season…

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. late on Monday said that total life-to-date sales of its PlayStation 4 game consoles to end-users had hit 18.5 million units. Once again, Sony’s PS4 has proved itself the fastest-selling console in the history of video games.

Shipments of Sony PlayStation 4 have already set multiple records, but they continue to beat all the expectations. According to Sony, of 18.5 million PS4 systems shipped life-to-date globally, 4.1 million units were sold during the holiday season, which is a huge number.

PS4 software sales also remain strong with more than 81.8 million copies sold in retail stores globally and through digital downloads on PlayStation Store as of January 4, 2015, including 17.8 million sold during the holiday season.

sony_playstation_4

As it appears, it has taken Sony five quarters and two holiday seasons to sell 18.5 million PlayStation 4 units to consumers worldwide. By contrast, it took the company eight quarters (from Q4 2006 to Q4 2008) and three holiday seasons to sell 21.18 million PlayStation 3 consoles, based on the company's financial reports (which include units sold to retailers, but not sold to end-users). As of the 31st of December, 2007, (when PS3 was on the market for five quarters and two holiday seasons) Sony , Sony sold in 10.53 million PlayStation 3 systems.

In fact, according to Sony's historical financial reports, sales dynamics of astonishingly successful PlayStation and PlayStation 2 was not as breathtaking as that of the company's latest PS4.

sony_playstation_hardware_production_shipments
Slide taken fron Sony's FY2006 report (year ended March 31, 2007), it shows forecast data for FY2007 as well as incorrect data for PS3 sales in FY2006. Later Sony corrected the number of PS3 consoles supplied to retailers during the year to 3.61 million units.

“We are absolutely delighted that so many customers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as their console of choice throughout this holiday season,” said Andrew House, president and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment. “We will continue to reinforce and deliver additional value on PS4 as the best place to play, by bringing even more exciting content and by enriching our wide array of service offerings.”

According to various reports, Microsoft Xbox One outsold Sony PlayStation 4 in November both in the U.S. and the U.K. However, it looks like sales of the PS4 remain on very high levels not only in these countries, but on other territories as well. Microsoft Corp. is yet to announce the LTD sales of its Xbox One. Hopefully it will do it at the Consumer Electronics Show 2015 shortly.

KitGuru Says: While it is clearly exciting to watch the competition between Microsoft Xbox One and Sony PlayStation 4 now, what really is important is how many of these consoles will be sold throughout their lifecycle. The legendary PlayStation 2 enjoyed a 13 years lifecycle and sold nearly 158* million units worldwide (yet, remember that its “active” lifecycle on well-developed markets was about eight or nine years). Previous-generation PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 have stayed on the market for eight and nine years, respectively, to see their LTD sales at around 85* million units (yet, the most recent holiday season clearly demonstrated that their active lifecycle is over not only among core gamers, but among casual gamers as well). While the sales dynamics of both PS4 and XB1 is good, a lot of analysts believe that their active lifecycle will hardly be longer than five years. Will any of them sell 100 million units? Only time will tell.

The adoption rate of Sony Corp.’s PlayStation 4 video game console continues to set records, if the unofficial information about its sell-through numbers is to be believed. As of mid-May life-to-date sales of the PS4 were eight million units.

Apparently, the PlayStation 4 continues to sell very well seven months after its release. Insiderp web-site claims that as of the 19th of May around eight million of the PS4 consoles had been sold to the end-users. In early April it was officially announced that sales of the PlayStation 4 had exceeded seven million units.

Shipments of the PlayStation 4 have already exceeded sales of the PlayStation 3 during the first year on the market.

It is not a secret that Sony Corp.’s PlayStation 4 video game console is generally more popular than its arch-rival, the Xbox One from Microsoft. The PS4 costs less than its main competitor and is more powerful when it comes to graphics processing capabilities. Recently Microsoft announced plans to sell the Xbox One without Kinect motion sensor, something that will lower the price of the console and will make it equal with the PS4. It remains to be seen whether the lower price will help the Xbox One to become generally more popular among gamers.

Sony Computer Entertainment did not comment on the news-story.

KitGuru Says: While the eight million number comes from an unofficial source, it seems to be correct. Given the popularity of the PS4, Sony could sell a million of units in several weeks between early April (when it announced that it had shipped seven million PS4s) and mid-May.
