PlayStation Now is one of Sony’s two main video game subscription services and is structured in a way similar to that of Xbox’s Game Pass. Ahead of the official announcement of Sony’s rumoured PS Now/Plus revamp, the console manufacturer has revealed one of PS Now’s free games for March – and it’s a big one.

Shadow Warrior 3 is an upcoming first-person action shooter developed by Flying Wild Hog and published by Devolver Digital. Discussing the game’s upcoming 1st of March release date, Bartek Sawicki – the Lead Producer at Flying Wild Hog – took to the PlayStation Blog to say:

“The katanas are sharpened and the dragon hunt is about to begin! I’m Bartek, the lead producer on Shadow Warrior 3, and our team here at Flying Wild Hog are excited to give you all a fresh look at our game before it launches on March 1. Stay tuned though because this post is getting a few updates throughout the day, with more videos to dive a little deeper into the game. Oh, and one more thing – Shadow Warrior 3 will be a PlayStation Now title at launch.”

With that, Sawicki then went on to discuss many aspects to the game, including Gunplay vs. Swordplay; Executions & Gore Weapons; the grappling hook and more (the post of which can be found HERE). Perhaps the most interesting piece of information however was the fact that Shadow Warrior 3 is launching day-one on PS Now.

This is a curious move by Sony, as the console manufacturer is said to be working on a complete revamp for PlayStation’s subscription services. Perhaps the oddest decision knowing this is the fact that PS Now is getting Shadow Warrior 3 and not PS Plus, despite the latter reportedly being the service set to ultimately keep its name following the revamp.

Whether for PS Now or PS Plus, Shadow Warrior 3 coming day-one to PlayStation subscribers indicates that Sony is making an effort to compete with Microsoft on its terms – as well as their own.

Today, Rockstar announced that its upcoming GTA remastered trilogy will be releasing in November, showing off the graphical enhancements in action for the first time with a short teaser trailer. As it turns out, each game in the trilogy will also be available standalone, and two of those standalone titles will be heading straight to Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Now.

Alongside the release date announcement for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition, Rockstar has also announced that Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – Definitive Edition will be available to play on Xbox Game Pass on day one (November 11th).

PlayStation isn't being left out either, as PS Now subscribers will get access to Grand Theft Auto III – Definitive Edition as well, although it will be coming a little later on the 7th of December.

Unfortunately on the Game Pass side of things, San Andreas won't be available via Xbox Game Pass for PC, the deal seems to be limited to Game Pass on consoles.

On Xbox Series X/S and PS5 consoles, the games in the trilogy will run at 4K/60FPS, although there may also be a 30FPS graphics mode available as well. The remastered trilogy was developed by a new Rockstar studio, called Grove Street Games, with each game rebuilt with Unreal Engine, enabling access to more modern graphical effects.

PlayStation Now subscribers are in for a treat this month. With titles such as Nioh 2, Red Dead Redemption 2, Moving Out, Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, and Nascar Heat, July's games are already a touch above the average month. However, the cherry on top is the addition of Judgment and God of War, allowing gamers to enjoy these titles on a PC.

Judgment was already available on Stadia, so this isn't technically the first time you can play it on the PC. As for God of War, rumours about a port to the PC platform have come and gone, but while we wait for an official announcement from Sony, you can test it out or even complete it through PS Now. Judgment will be available on the PS Now until October 4th, but God of War's date was not shared.

PlayStation Now games for July: Red Dead Redemption 2, Nioh 2, Judgment

With God of War: Ragnarok coming in 2022, it may be a good idea to catch up to the story. Released in 2018, God of War was one of the most critically acclaimed titles of the past generation, amassing an incredible number of “Game of the Year” awards and a 94 Metacritic score.

Judgment has also been well-received, but not as good as God of War, obviously. The Yakuza spin-off was first released on June 21st and was relaunched for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on April 23rd. Depending on the platform, Metacritic scores range between 80 and 85, with critics claiming it as “on par with its predecessors in the main Yakuza franchise”.

Sony might have a couple more tricks up its sleeve with the PS5, with a new patent describing a “scalable game console CPU/GPU design”. The filing has spurred rumours that a ‘Pro' version of the PS5 console may already be planned, included a multi-SoC system and cloud servers to enhance performance.

Spotted by redditor u/anexanhume, Sony's multiple SoC patent starts by briefly detailing how it is possible to render portions of each frame of video in a multi-GPU simulation environment and the benefits of its utilisation. In the patent, a console using a single SoC is cited as the “light version” of the console, while one using multiple SoCs is described as a “high-end version”, which might come with more RAM, storage and other features.

The patent not only refers to multiple local SoCs, but it also tells us about using SoCs “from cloud servers”, which is basically what “PlayStation Now” does. It also points out how using more than a single SoC in a system comes with disadvantages, and how they can be solved. One of the issues raised in the patent is thermals, which can be solved by dynamically adjusting the frequencies and/or voltages.

The core principle presented in this patent to render a frame using multiple SoCs is by setting each SoC to render part of the frame. It then uses multiplexing techniques to combine the rendered frame parts and output them as a single frame. The multiple SoCs might be located in a console, a local network, or in the cloud.

There are three block diagrams in the patent, each showing a multi-SoC console system. The first one shows us an example of two APUs, each with their own memory controllers and RAM, in the same die using the NUMA architecture, allowing the APU faster access to contents of memory. The second diagram suggests the use of two SoCs (CPU and GPU) in the same die, with a shared memory controller and shared RAM. The third and final one shows a die with CPU, GPU, memory controller, and RAM, with an extra die with a CPU and GPU that uses the memory and memory controller of the other die, sharing the RAM and memory controller like in the previous example.

In the patent, it's also written that  access to multiple SoCs can be made through “a cloud server by paying extra fees”, with “lower-paying users” getting access to fewer dies, and “higher-paying users” getting more dies allocated to them.

KitGuru Says: Companies often file patents for tech that they don't necessarily intend to use in the near future. With that in mind, this can be chalked up to R&D efforts for now. Do you think a PS5 Pro will eventually be announced?

Each month, Sony’s PlayStation Now game subscription service sees a number of new titles added. For the month of June, subscribers can stream or download Metro Exodus, Dishonored 2 and NASCAR Heat 4. These three titles are joining the over 800 others already available on the service, including games such as Control and Marvel’s Spider-Man.

Metro Exodus is this month’s premiere title. Available from now until the 30th of November 2020, players will continue to explore a post-apocalyptic Russia in the 3rd entry in this first-person action thriller series. If you have yet to play any games in the series, both Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux are available via PlayStation Now, meaning that you can experience the full journey of Artyom from start to finish.

Dishonored 2 is the sequel to 2012’s critically acclaimed stealth-action title. Developed by Arkane Studios, Dishonored 2 gives you the ability to play the game as you wish, offering an open sandbox-like structure to its levels. Furthermore, you can play the entire game without killing any enemies. The freedom afforded to you in Dishonored 2 is what makes the game so fun and replayable, and is part of the reason why it received high-praise from critics and fans alike upon its release in 2016. Dishonored 2 is a permanent addition to the service.

The final game being added is NASCAR Heat 4. This officially licensed title allows you to get behind the wheel and participate in races across a number of modes, including career, challenge and multiplayer options. Though not the most highly praised racing title, NASCAR fans will find enough in it to get some enjoyment out of the game. NASCAR Heat 4 is a permanent addition to the service.

All three of these titles are available to stream or download, and are joining over 800 other titles available on the service.

Since its soft-relaunch in late 2019, Sony’s game subscription service ‘PlayStation Now’ has offered its users a number of high quality titles each month. The console manufacturer has now revealed which games are set to join the line-up for the month of May. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, alongside The Evil Within 2 and Get Even are now available for subscribers to either stream or download.

Rainbow Six Siege needs no introduction. Released in 2015, Ubisoft has continued to support the tactical first person shooter regularly. In turn, fans have continued to support the game, with it now boasting over 55 million players. It would seem as though Siege’s forward trajectory has no intention of slowing down either, as Ubisoft has confirmed that the game will be supported on next-gen systems. It’s never too late to experience the “deeply tactical, always tense multiplayer shooter”. Rainbow Six Siege will be available on PlayStation Now until the 2nd of November 2020.

The Evil Within 2 is the sequel to Shinji Mikami’s terrifying survival horror third-person shooter. Released in late 2017, the game has you “enter the alternate reality town of Union in search of your long thought dead daughter”. Featuring “Sickeningly brilliant creature designs and jump scares,” the game received consistent and high praise from both critics and fans of Mikami’s work. The Evil Within 2 joins PlayStation Now as a permanent addition.

The third and final game joining the service for the month of May is Get Even – a puzzler, shooter, and psychological thriller. Published by Bandai Namco, you find “yourself trapped inside an insane asylum with a virtual reality device surgically grafted to your head”. You're then “forced to track down and ‘enter’ memories to gradually unravel the mystery behind your incarceration”. Featuring plenty of twists and turns, Get Even received a positive reception due in part to its deep and heavy atmosphere. As with The Evil Within 2, Get Even is a permanent addition to the service.

Rainbow Six Siege, The Evil Within 2 and Get Even are all available to stream or download on Sony’s PlayStation Now service. These games join over 800+ other titles, including Control, Marvel’s Spider-Man, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

Ever since PlayStation Now received its soft-relaunch back in October 2019, the game subscription service has focused much more heavily on giving its users higher quality titles. Previous months have seen PS4 juggernauts such as God of War and Persona 5 join the line-up. The stand out title for the month of April is far and away 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man – though it’s not the only game being added.

Three new titles are being added to PlayStation Now this month: Marvel’s Spider-Man, Just cause 4, and The Golf Club 2019.

Marvel’s Spider-Man needs no introduction. The 2018 open-world title from Insomniac Games quickly became one of the consoles most successful titles. The game received universal praise from both fans and critics alike, selling over 3.3 million copies in its first three days and becoming the fastest selling first/second-party release in Sony’s history. The game went on to sell more than 13 million copies as of August 2019 – meaning that sales figures are likely even higher now.

Just Cause 4 is the latest title in Avalanche Studios’ open-world destruction haven. Released in late 2018, the game continued to evolve what the series is known best for – its destruction. Once again, you play as Rico Rodriguez trying to take down the bad guys. This time however, the private military organisation has found a way to weaponise the weather. With an improved toolset at his disposal, Rico now has more mobility and a greater capacity for destruction than ever before. Though critical reception was mixed, Just Cause 4 is a great companion for those who wish to have some mindless fun in a large open world.

The final game being added is The Golf Club 2019 – or more accurately, The Golf Club 2019 featuring PGA TOUR. This golf sim includes seven real world golf courses for that added sense of realism. When combined with the game’s mechanics, alongside a golf course designer, fans of the sport will have a near endless supply of things to do in The Golf Club 2019.

These three titles are available from now to stream or download to your PS4 systems. Spider-Man will be available on the service until the 7th of July, while Just Cause 4 will remain until the 6th of October. The Golf Club 2019 meanwhile will be a permanent addition to the service. These titles join last month’s line-up of Control, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus – among others.

PlayStation have yet to officially announce its March lineup, but thanks to Resetera user Lapsu we now know that March is set to be one of the service's biggest months yet. 11 games will be joining the service, including the multi-award winning Control from Remedy Entertainment and Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

The full list of games being added are:

  • Shadow of the Tomb Raider
  • Control
  • Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus
  • NASCAR Heat 3
  • Nights of Azure
  • Nights of Azure 2: Bride of the New Moon
  • Warriors All-Stars
  • Toukiden Kiwami
  • Toukiden 2
  • Romance of the Three Kingdoms 13
  • Dead or Alive 5 Last Round

Shadow of The Tomb Raider and Control are set to be available for 6 months, while all other games will remain on the service for the foreseeable future.

PlayStation Now originally launched back in 2014. The service initially struggled to see wide scale adoption, and was considered to be an inferior product to Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass. The service received a soft-relaunch in October 2019 however, which not only saw PS Now’s monthly cost heavily decreased, but also saw a more focused effort being placed on adding AAA titles.

Currently, PlayStation Now has over 800 titles available to play, including heavy hitters such as Horizon Zero Dawn and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. The full list of PS Now games can be found HERE. PS Now costs £8.99 a month, or £49.99 for a year of access.

PlayStation has announced the list of games that will be joining its PS Now games subscription service next month. Starting on the 2nd of January, PS Now subscribers will be able to play Overcooked! 2, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, and Horizon Zero Dawn : Complete Edition. These titles will be joining the 800+ PS4, PS3, and PS2 games already available on the service. Overcooked! 2 is a permanent addition to the service, while the other two titles will only be available for a limited time.

Horizon Zero Dawn released in 2017, to a very positive reception. This open world, third person title by Guerilla Games allows you to Take on the role of skilled hunter Aloy as you explore a lush world inhabited by mysterious mechanised creatures in this exhilarating blockbuster action-RPG. Nature has reclaimed the ruins of a forgotten civilisation, and pockets of humanity live on in primitive hunter-gatherer tribes. Their dominion over the new wilderness has been usurped by the Machines – fearsome mechanical creatures of unknown origin”. The game has since sold over 10 million copies.

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy was created as a standalone adventure, in the wake of the conclusion of Nathan Drake’s story in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. Releasing in 2017, the game “follows fan-favourite treasure hunter Chloe Frazer on her journey to recover an ancient artifact and keep it out of the hands of a ruthless warmonger. Enlisting the aid of renowned mercenary Nadine Ross, they venture to India’s Western Ghats to locate the Golden Tusk of Ganesh. In her greatest journey yet, Chloe must confront her past and decide what she’s willing to sacrifice to forge her own legacy”. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy was positively received by both fans and critics alike.

The final addition for the month of January is Overcooked! 2. This sequel to the co-op cooking simulation game features more of what was loved in the first game – creative levels, and frantic gameplay. Overcooked! 2 has you “[j]ourney back to the Onion Kingdom and assemble your team of chefs in classic couch co-op or online play for up to four players”.

Overcooked! 2 appears to be a permanent addition to the service, whereas Horizon Zero Dawn and Uncharted: Lost Legacy will only be available until the 7th of April 2020. These titles will be joining the 800+ games available on PS Now, when they are added on the 2nd of January.

PlayStation have announced the list of games that will be joining its PS Now subscription service for the month of December. The headlining title is the battle royale game, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. The other titles accompanying it onto the service is F1 2019 and Wolfenstein: The Old Blood. These games will be joining the 800+ titles already available on the service, including last month’s additions of Persona 5, Hollow Knight, and Middle Earth: Shadow of War.

Releasing in 2017 on PC, PUBG was one of the first battle royal titles to really jumpstart the genre. The game has since sold over 50 million copies, becoming one of the best selling games of all time. The game has you “Land, loot, and outwit your opponents to become the last player left standing in a thrilling game experience full of unexpected, adrenaline-pumping moments in PUBG. Compete with 100 players on a remote island for a winner-takes-all showdown where strategic gameplay is as important as shooting skills”.

The second game joining PS Now in December is Formula 1 2019. This racing title is based on the real life Formula 1 event, with the 2019 title including Formula 2 as well. The game received positive reviews when it released back in June of this year.

The third game arriving on the service is Wolfenstein: The Old Blood. This first-person shooter was released as a standalone DLC to 2014’s critically acclaimed “Wolfenstein: The New Order”. The Old Blood takes the formula of the main title, and turns it up to 11, introducing mystical elements, with less focus on the story, but a greater focus on unique mechanics. The game received favourable reviews upon its release in 2015.

PUBG will be available to play on PS Now until the 3rd of March 2020, whereas F1 2019 and Wolfenstein: The Old Blood will remain on the service for the foreseeable future. Other titles due to leave the service are God of War, Grand Theft Auto 5, Uncharted 4, and Infamous Second Son, all of which will be removed from PS Now come the 2nd of January 2020.

PlayStation gave the PlayStation Now Streaming service a soft relaunch last month, where it cut the price of the service significantly as well as introduced blockbuster titles such as God of War (2018) and GTA V on a monthly basis. The list of high quality titles continues with November’s lineup: Persona 5, Middle-Earth: Shadow of War and Hollow Knight.

Persona 5 was the highest rated PlayStation 4 game in 2017. This 100+ hour turn-based JRPG takes everything that made Persona 4 great, and perfects it. With an engrossing story, featuring twists and turns; likeable characters, each with their own interesting subplot; a funky soundtrack; and possibly one of the most stylish art styles of any game, Persona 5 is certainly a title worth checking out.

Middle-Earth: Shadow of War is the sequel to one of 2014’s best action-adventure games. Released in 2017, the sequel featured a refinement of the Nemesis system which it introduced in the first game. The Nemesis system gave enemies much greater depth, and instilled a sense of rivalry, separate from the main story itself. While the game was mired with controversy for its inclusion of intrusive microtransactions which impeded on the progression of the story itself, Warner Bros. later removed them, meaning that playing the game now would give you the best experience possible.

Hollow Knight is a 2D metroidvania, originally releasing in 2017 on PC, but later arrived on consoles in 2018. Featuring a unique art style, Hollow Knight is “[t]he award winning action adventure of insects and heroes. Explore twisting caverns, ancient cities and deadly wastes. Battle tainted creatures and befriend bizarre bugs. Uncover ancient history and solve the mysteries buried at the kingdom’s heartexplains the PlayStation blog post. The game is currently awaiting its sequel ‘Hollow Knight: Silksong’, so there is no better time to familiarise yourself with the franchise.

Persona 5 and Middle-Earth: Shadow of War will be available to stream and download from now until the 4th of February 2020. Hollow Knight meanwhile will be a permanent addition to the service. These games will be joining the hundreds of games already available on the service.

At times, it can be easy to forget that PlayStation Now exists. While Sony was ahead of the competition when it came to subscriptions and streaming, the service hasn’t had as much of a push as something like Xbox Game Pass or upcoming services like Google Stadia. It looks like that is starting to change a bit, with PlayStation Now getting a significant price cut in addition to some very high profile games.

PlayStation Now is dropping subscription prices down from £12.99 per month to £8.99 per month and the annual subscription is coming down from £84.99 to £49.99 here in the UK. A new ‘quarterly’ subscription option has also been introduced for £22.99. In the US, the new prices are $9.99 per month, $24.99 per quarter or $59.99 per year.

In addition to the price cuts, several major games are being added to the library, including God Of War (2018), Uncharted 4, Grand Theft Auto V and Infamous Second Son. However, God of War, Uncharted 4 and Infamous Second Son will be leaving the library in January 2020, so this is a limited time, holiday season push.

Sony has also committed itself to adding “a refreshed selection of marquee games” to PlayStation Now every month. One important thing to note here is that PlayStation Now is not just accessible on PS4 consoles, it is also available on PC, so if you really want to play God of War or Uncharted 4 but without the extra expense of a console, this could be an option for you.

KitGuru Says: Adding God of War to the library is bound to sell a few subscriptions, even if the game is being streamed rather than played natively. Are any of you tempted to try PlayStation Now while some of the major exclusives are available?

Sony has shifted its focus away from the PlayStation 4, looking ahead towards its anticipated next-generation console and expanding on its cloud services. As of today, PlayStation Now is available in seven extra countries throughout Europe, giving players access to over 600 games.

Italy, Spain, Portugal, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Norway all have access to the service, granting subscribers the ability to download or stream games to their PS4 console or PC, should their internet live up to the task. How long a game takes to download is dependent on the user’s internet speed, allowing the game to play offline. Those that wish to stream are recommended to have at least 5 Mbps, preferably through a wired connection as Wi-Fi can prove unreliable in some households.

Among the 600 games that Sony touts are PlayStation exclusives like The Last of Us, Bloodborne and God of War III Remastered. Mortal Kombat X is also included ahead of the release of NetherRealm’s sequel, as well as family friendly fun in LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham, Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One and Sonic Generations.

PS Now has been available for quite some time in the UK. Although Sony states that it is continually adding games to the roster, the service is better for those that have missed out on some titles than those that wish to hop into something new. This includes Red Dead Redemption and Sony’s Uncharted Saga.

As usual, Sony offers a 7-day free trial before charging subscribers. The company wasn’t clear on what the price point is for the seven new countries, but it’s likely going to cost €14.99 like it does in France, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria and Luxembourg.

KitGuru Says: Although the ability to play PS exclusives on PC does intrigue me, the library has always been a little disappointing for how much it costs in my eyes. I feel like Sony struggles to live up to competition when both Xbox Game Pass and EA Access offer some games at launch as a part of its subscription. Here’s hoping Sony realise this as we approach the cloud era. How do you feel about PS Now?

PlayStation Now has been around for years now but the cloud gaming trend has still yet to catch on. Instead, PSNow has been usurped by services like EA Access and Xbox Game Pass, which allow users to download games from a library to run them natively. Sony seems to have taken note of this and has begun rolling out a ‘download' option for PSNow subscribers.

Sony began testing out the download option back in June. Now that it has officially rolled out to all PSNow subscribers, the download option will appear on “almost all” PS4 games on the service, in addition to some of the older PS2 games in the library. Unfortunately, PS3 games will continue to be streaming only, which is likely due to how hard it would be to emulate the PS3's cell architecture.

Games downloaded through PSNow will run natively on a PS4. In addition, if a PSNow game contains multiplayer, then you can access it without paying for a PlayStation Plus subscription. Downloaded games will support DLC and expansions too. Games downloaded via PSNow will be playable offline but in order to ensure that no funny business is going on, an online check-in will be required every few days.

For those wondering, the number of PS4 games available on PSNow is actually pretty solid. This includes the likes of Bloodborne, Darksiders, Disgaea 5, God of War 3 Remastered, Heavy Rain, XCOM 2 and more.

KitGuru Says: I don't have a fast enough internet connection for game streaming. However, I have heavily appreciated being able to download games through EA Access and Xbox Game Pass. Sony might need to work on beefing up its PSNow library a bit, but the option to download and play offline is certainly welcome.

Sony has had its PlayStation Now service available for quite some time and over the years the service has been thrown onto plenty of devices, from Samsung and Sony smart TVs, to PS4/PS3/Vita and PC. Unfortunately, it looks like that list of compatible devices is going to get a lot smaller later this year as Sony wants to scale down its focus, leaving just PS4 and PC as supported platforms.

PlayStation Now is based on Gaikai streaming technology, which Sony acquired some years ago. It allows you to stream a library of last generation PS3 games to just about anything that could connect a DualShock 3 controller.

Owners of 2016 Bravia TVs will lose access to PlayStation Now on the 1st of April, meanwhile PS3, Vita and other devices including Blu-ray players and Sony/Samsung smart TVs will no longer be able to access PlayStation Now starting from the 15th of August. Here is what Sony had to say on the matter: “After thoughtful consideration, we decided to shift our focus and resources to PS4 and Windows PC to further develop and improve the user experience on these two devices.”

We didn't get much of an explanation as to why the device pool is being shrunk but it would appear that supporting less powerful devices is holding back the service in some way. That said, Sony will be happy to take your money if you forget to cancel before support for your device is dropped, so make sure you cancel the subscription and avoid paying for a defunct service.

KitGuru Says: This could just be a case of PlayStation Now not getting a lot of use outside of the PS4 or PC. I've never been tempted to stream a PS3 game directly to my TV myself though streaming to something like a Vita could be a little more interesting. Have any of you tried out PlayStation Now before?

A lot of PC gamers out there don't dip their toes into the console market and as a result, they do miss out on some good games. However, it looks like PC owners will get their chance to play some PlayStation exclusives soon as Sony has confirmed that it is bringing PlayStation Now to the platform, with the rollout kicking off in Europe and then spreading to the US.

PlayStation Now is a streaming service and is limited to last generation titles. However, it happens to work quite well so it could be worth trying out. This will give PC players a chance to try exclusives like Uncharted, God of War, The Last of Us, Journey and more. The PS Now library itself spans to over 400 games so there is a lot on offer.

t6gAjfBXcKzoFgm5RMeY97-650-80

Aside from that, Sony has also announced an official wireless adapter for the DualShock 4 controller, which is a first. As for system requirements, PS Now will work on Windows 7, 8.1 and 10, it will also work on any system running an Intel Core i3 or AMD A10 CPU at minimum. You will want at least 2GB of RAM and a 5Mbps connection too.

An exact launch date wasn't given but it should be on the way soon. Hopefully then we can also get some news on quality settings, like whether or not 1080p streaming will be possible, or support for higher frame rates on games that support it.

KitGuru Says: PlayStation Now isn't a bad service but game streaming is never really going to be the optimal way to play these games. That said, if you are dead set on avoiding consoles, this does give you a chance to play through some pretty great games on PC, including The Last of Us and Uncharted, two of Naughty Dog/Sony's biggest franchises.

Last year, Sony announced that it was trying to bring backwards compatibility to the PlayStation 4 in a different way, using a cloud gaming service known as PlayStation Now. This service allows PS4 owners to rent and stream older titles to their consoles and now, an influx of 105 games is planned this week, pushing the overall library above the 250 game mark.

PlayStation Now is powered by Gaikai technology, which Sony acquired a few years back. New games to land on the service include the Lost Planet games, six Resident Evil titles, several games from the Street Fighter series, Dead Rising 2 and even some indie games.

The full list of new games coming to the service can be found on the PlayStation blog post, which lists them by genre. Right now, the streaming service is available in the US and UK, with varying prices, though you don't have to purchase, or in some cases re-purchase, every game, you can subscribe for a monthly fee and get access to the library. An all access pass will set you back $19.99 or £12.99 per month.

KitGuru Says: I haven't had the chance to try PlayStation Now for myself but I've had varying experiences with cloud gaming and I wouldn't say it is ready to replace true backwards compatibility. Do any of you use PlayStation Now at all?

PlayStation Now will start rolling out here in the UK this Spring, Sony has announced. It will start off in closed beta form, meaning you will need an invite to actually use the service. However, after a few months, things will likely open up, allowing more people to try out Sony's gaming on demand solution.

PlayStation Now is Sony's cloud gaming service, based on the technology it acquired when it bought out Gaikai. The service lets you play last generation PS3 titles on the new PS4 consoles. You will have a better chance of getting in on the closed beta if you are a PlayStation Plus member but if you would like to try your luck, you can register for the waiting list, HERE.

The closed beta will be available to PS4 owners only in the UK, but the service will be free of charge at first, which is a change in direction from the way it did things over in the US. This move is likely down to the criticism the company faced for its overly high rental prices and lack of subscription option.

PlayStation Now will eventually branch off to other devices, including the PS3, PS Vita and some of Sony's own TVs. You will need a Dual Shock 3 or Dual Shock 4 controller and a 5mbps broadband connection as the minimum. There will only be a handful of games available during the closed beta, including: The Last of Us, Uncharted 2, God of War Ascension, Rayman Legends, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, Saints Row the Third, The Walking Dead, Just Cause 2 and Dirt 3.

KitGuru Says: Sony giving early beta testers free access to its service is a smart move, its nice to see that the company has learned from the backlash it faced after seeing the initial PS Now prices over in the US.

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. has announced that it will bring games for its PlayStation and PlayStation 2 platforms to its PlayStation Now streaming service in the longer-term future. While a nice thing is that it will be possible to enjoy good-old titles on PlayStation Now-supporting hardware eventually, it is completely unclear when this is set to happen.

At present Sony offers over a hundred of PlayStation 3 video games on its PlayStation Now cloud streaming service. This allows the company to sell games on the PS3 platform and to provide PlayStation 4 owners an ability to play previous-generation titles. However, many core gamers are eager to play classic titles some of which are up to 20 years old, something that is not possible to do on existing game consoles.

“There are some amazing games for PS1 and PS2 and our longer term vision is to go back further into the PlayStation generational library and offer those with PlayStation Now,” said Peter Jamshidi, director of marketing of PlayStation Now streaming service at the Sony Computer Entertainment America, reports GameSpot. “Right now however, we are focused on bringing to users experiences from the amazing PS3 library.”

sony_playstation_now_service_artwork

Sony believes that there are many PlayStation 4 owners who never owned a PlayStation 3 or had a chance to play some of the games it offered. As a result, the company is focused on bringing PS3 games to its cloud platform first.

Earlier this month SCEA outlined two subscription plans for its PlayStation Now cloud streaming service: one month for $19.99, or a three-month package for $44.99. The subscription provides access to a large and diverse catalog of PS3 games, ranging from action to RPG and everything in-between.

PlayStation Now will also be coming to Samsung TVs in the future.

KitGuru Says: Adding PS1 and PS2 games to the PlayStation Now catalogue will not only make the cloud streaming service even better, but it will also make the company’s PlayStation 4 consoles more competitive (against Xbox On1) since a lot of people would prefer to have an opportunity to relive their experience that is now 20, 15 or 10 years away. It will be interesting to see what Microsoft plans to do in order to provide something similar on the Xbox One…

Sony's video game streaming service, PlayStation Now, is finally getting its long awaited subscription option over in the US. The subscription plan launches later this month with two different options. PS4 owners can choose a 1 month subscription plan at $19.99 or a three month one, which will set you back $44.99.

That monthly fee will grant you unlimited access to the PlayStation Now library of PS3 titles, although PS1 and PS2 games are expected to make an appearance in the future. PlayStation Now Marketing Chief, Peter Jamshidi, commented on the announcement in a PlayStation blog post:

“There's strong value with the subscription, as you're getting access to over a hundred great games and lots of hours of game time”.

“What's more, we will be adding even more games over time, so you will always have something great to play.”

Sony's cloud gaming service has been available in the US for some time now, with a European launch supposedly penciled in for some time in 2015. However, no announcement has been made at this time.

Back when Sony originally delayed PS:Now in Europe, it cited regional connection speed as the primary concern.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: PlayStation Now has had pricing and performance issues in the past but this new subscription model seems fair for what is on offer, particularly when you consider that the library of available games will constantly grow. Unfortunately for PS4 owners in the EU, there is no news about a PS:Now launch on this side of the Atlantic just yet but we still expect a launch some time in 2015. Have any of our US readers tried PlayStation Now? What did you think of it?

In an announcement today Samsung and Sony declared a partnership that will see the PlayStation Now game streaming service being built into select Samsung Smart TV's next year. This will allow customers in the United States and Canada to stream games directly to their Samsung TV without any need for downloads.

When this is launched in the first half of 2015, owners of compatible Samsung TV's will be able to connect a Playstation Dualshock 4 controller and play any of more than 200 PS3 titles. Sony will be demoing the service running on Samsung TV's at CES 2015, so attendees can try some hands on time with it in the new year.

Playstation Now is a service that was announced when Sony bought game streaming company, Gaikai in 2012 and can be used to stream games to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita consoles, as well as PlayStation TV and Sony's Bravia TV line. Games can be played by renting them for a set time per game, or via a monthly subscription.

“PlayStation Now provides a new dimension to Samsung Smart TVs that consumers have been looking for – blockbuster PS3 games accessed through an intuitive interface that makes it easy to discover and play great gaming experiences,” said Youngchan Kim, Vice President at Samsung Electronics.

While there was no mention of plans to bring these Samsung TV's to the rest of the world, it would be surprising if Sony and Samsung didn't expand this if it proves popular with consumers in North America. It's also worth noting that at Gamescom 2014, Sony confirmed that PS Now would be available in Europe during 2015, with the United Kingdom being the first European country to have access to the service.

KitGuru Says: I've never been a big fan of game streaming services, with the sacrifices that they make to the image quality and the input lag that is pretty unavoidable. Having said that if I had a TV with this service built in I might well be tempted to give it another go as I'm sure it works very well for some games.

Nvidia's Shield tablet is going to receive some massive updates over the next couple of months. We've known for a while that Android Lollipop will be coming to the device but Nvidia has a lot more than that up its sleeve. Game streaming has become very popular over the past year thanks to efforts from Valve and Nvidia. However, it's now looking to take things to the next level with the Grid, a truly capable cloud gaming service.

NV_SHIELD_Tablet_SHIELD_Hub_app

Grid is Nvidia's vision for the future, a Netflix for gaming where users are able to play a constantly evolving library of triple A titles at high detail and frame rates without the expense of a high end gaming PC. Grid has been in the making for around ten years and we will finally see the result of all of that work.

Nvidia Grid VS PSNow

The obvious comparison to be made here is to Sony's Playstation Now, which utilizes the same chips Nvidia made for the Playstation 3. On paper, Grid should end up being a much more capable service, the servers are powered by a new chip, which manages to output 2448 GFlops of compute power, making it around 12 times more powerful than Playstation Now which only manages 192 GFlops. Additionally, load times have been halved, averaging out at 23 seconds and every title will run at 60 frames per second.

Of course though, this is all based on Nvidia's own numbers, so we'll have to wait and see how it performs in the wild.

Nvidia Grid Library

So, Grid has plenty of horsepower behind it but does it have the content library to back it up? The launch library will feature over 20 full titles, including Batman Arkham City, The Witcher 2, Borderlands 2, Saints Row the Third and Street Fighter Ultra. Nvidia says that it is currently working with every major publisher and will be getting in touch with indie developers to add new games to the library every month for the foreseeable future.

Free until...

Price will play an important role in the future of cloud gaming. However, Nvidia isn't worried about costs at all right now. Grid will launch completely free with unlimited access to the available titles during the open testing period. There will be a cost associated eventually, but that won't be coming in to play until the service is performing up to scratch across the board.

There is a caveat though, the service will be exclusive to Shield tablet and handheld owners for the foreseeable future.

Those in the US will gain access later this month, while UK Shield owners will be granted access in December. The rest of Europe will be following shortly in Q1. Those in Asia will have to wait until Q2.

Grid Hub Half Life 2 Grid

KitGuru was fortunate enough to have been invited to a small press gathering earlier this week, where we got to see Grid in action for the first time. We were shown Batman Arkham City, Grid 2 and Street Fighter all running at 1080p and 60 frames per second. There was a very brief pause in gameplay during the opening sequence to Batman but aside from that, I witnessed no further hiccups for the remainder of my time there and I came away with some pretty positive impressions.

Obviously, seeing something and getting hands on time in a demo environment is a bit different to taking it home and trying it for yourself. We are currently working on our own Nvidia Shield testing and review so keep and eye out for that at some point in the future.

Grid Map

European servers are based in Dublin and Germany while in the US, servers are based in California and Wisconsin. Asian servers will be based in China and Japan. All gameplay settings will be controlled by the GeForce experience, which will lower your bit-rate depending on connection. 1080p is the maximum supported resolution for now and multiplayer services will be arriving eventually, bringing support for both local and over the web multiplayer.

Those of you that own a Shield device and want to test out the Grid for yourself will need a 10Mbps internet connection, as cloud game streaming will be using up at least 6.5Mbps constantly. Due to the large amount of data being pushed through, those of you with monthly data caps will have to keep streaming to a minimum.

NV_SHIELD_Tablet_Green_Box_Bundle

If you have yet to buy a Shield tablet then the holiday season is going to be the best time as not only will you be gaining access to the Grid cloud gaming servers but those who pick up the 32GB LTE model will be able to redeem ‘The Green Box', Nvidia's exclusive Android version of Valve's Orange box games including Portal, Half Life 2 and the sequel, Half-Life 2 Episode 1.

Redeeming the Greenbox will work similarly to redeeming codes found inside Graphics card boxes. All of the same rules apply, so if you bought a Shield tablet already, then you unfortunately won't be receiving a code. However, you will be receiving the Android 5.0 Lollipop update on the 18th of November.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: I was fairly impressed by the limited experience I had with the Grid. However, first impressions can change so be on the lookout for a full review in the future. The server specifications sound powerful enough on paper but things could change once the flood gates open and all Shield owners start hammering the servers.

What do you guys think of Nvidia's new cloud gaming initiative? Are you skeptical? Do you trust Nvidia to get it right?

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe CEO, Jim Ryan, has reaffirmed the company's stance on EA's new subscription program, EA Access, stating that the $5 a month gaming service doesn't quite “fit into the framework of everything we do and everything that we offer.”

“We don’t have anything against EA Access, we just need to position it,” he said. “These sort of offerings they’ve got to fit into the framework of everything we do and everything that we offer. And we’re just not quite comfortable with how it sits within the whole ecosystem of our digital offering, including PlayStation Plus.”

ea_access-0-0_cinema_640-0

The CEO then goes on to say that the company believes that Playstation Plus continues to offer better value with its two free games a month scheme. One thing that he didn't confirm was whether or not Playstation Now would eventually receive a subscription model offering.

Right now, EA Access is exclusive to the Xbox One and doesn't offer that many games. However, the list of games in ‘the vault' will only increase over time, which will in-turn, increase the service's value. There are currently no plans to bring EA Access to the PC.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: I actually really like the idea of EA Access and I wouldn't mind it coming to the PC. It almost seems like Sony just doesn't want a service on its platform that could potentially compete with Playstation Now or Playstation Plus, which is a shame for PS4 owners. What do you guys think of EA Access? Is it a good idea?

Playstation Now will be entering open beta later today in the US but Sony wants to remind users that all current prices are not set in stone yet and could change upon receiving feedback.

When the closed beta first launched, Sony faced a lot of criticism over its streaming service's overly high prices, with older games often costing a lot more to rent digitally than to own on a physical disc. However, Jack Buser, Senior Director of Playstation Now has said that the company is still trying to feel out how much users are willing to pay for different rental periods:

We are going to be going into open beta on PS4 specifically for the rental aspect of the service. These are the early days, so we're always listening to feedback. Over time, new content and a lot of other changes will be based on feedback and usage we'll see in the beta.”

LJcM475

Sony has already revealed some re-adjusted prices for the open beta. Instead of paying $5 for four hours of gameplay, users will now just have to pay $2.99, with some games only costing $1.99. $5.99 will get you a week of play time, $7.99 will get you a game for 30 days, while 90 day rental periods will cost $14.99. The open beta will launch with over 100 titles from 50 publishers.

The new pricing model is much better and should reduce the amount of complaints Sony was originally receiving. During the closed beta, Playstation Now received over 300,000 hours of gameplay, which shows just how many people want to play older PS3 titles on their PS4. Now that the service is hitting open beta, Sony expects millions of users to try it out.

KitGuru Says: The updated Playstation Now prices are much more reasonable. However, Sony should still look in to changing pricing depending on how old the game is, for example, a three year old game shouldn't cost as much as a game that was released three months ago. Have any of you guys tried out the Playstation Now beta? What do you think of the updated price plan?

Sony is currently facing heavy criticism from gamers, YouTuber's and traditional media outlets over its Playstation Now beta pricing. Right now the service is offering plenty of older titles such as Saints Row the Third and Final Fantasy XIII-2 but the rental options are more expensive than buying a physical copy of the game.

Sony has done a pretty good job at covering its bases with rental periods, you can rent games for 4 hours, 7 days, 30 days or 90 days. However, the prices for those options are ridiculously high. Renting a game like Deus EX Human Revolution, Final Fantasy XIII-2 or Saints Row the Third for a mere four hours will set you back $5. Despite the fact that most of those games can be bought for not much more. For example, on eBay you can pick up a new copy of Deus EX for $5.99 right now.

The above chart shows that renting a game for even up to 90 days is usually more expensive than buying a physical copy from Amazon and on some occasions, renting is actually more expensive than the PSN price. Playstation Now does have some benefits, it will allow you to stream games to multiple devices, including the PS Vita, PS TV, PS4 and PS3. Sony has also said that it hopes to spread the service to non Playstation devices.

However, at its current pricing, I doubt that people are going to be willing to give Playstation Now much of a chance. The service is still in beta so hopefully Sony gets its act together and takes the age of a game and its current second hand and retail price in to account when pricing up. There has also been talks of a subscription service that would allow you to pay a monthly fee in order to have access to the full library of games, although there's no concrete details on that yet or how much it will cost just yet.

KitGuru Says: I wouldn't bother with Playstation Now at its current pricing. How much would you guys be willing to spend to rent a game for four hours? How much do you think a subscription to Playstation Now should cost?

While micro video game consoles only compatible with mobile and cloud games have yet to prove their feasibility, it looks like Sony Computer Entertainment is confident about its PS Vita-based non-mobile device. At the E3 trade-show the company said that later this year it will start to sell its PlayStation TV console (originally known as the PlayStation Vita TV in Japan) in North America, Europe and the PAL region.

Sony’s PlayStation TV video game console is based on the same hardware as the PlayStation Vita mobile game console (quad-core ARM Cortex-A9, PowerVR SGX543MP graphics core, etc.) and is compatible with games originally designed for the PS Vita, the PlayStation Portable as well as the original PlayStation (select games are supported). The PS TV also supports PS4 remote play and wireless controllers (DualShock 3 and 4). Eventually, the PS TV is expected to support PS3 games thanks to the PlayStation Now cloud service. According to Sony, the PS TV offers a lineup of over 1000 titles.

sony_playstation_vita_tv_2

Originally Sony released the PlayStation Vita TV product in Japan and other Asian regions on the 14th of November, 2013. The console has proven to be popular with consumers looking for an easy-to-use gaming system.

In North American and European countries the PlayStation TV will compete against various other micro consoles, which are mostly powered by the Google Android operating systems and support appropriate games. More capable competitor for the PlayStation TV will be Amazon’s Fire TV set-top-box, which not only supports games, but provides other services as well.

sony_playstation_vita_tv

The Sony PlayStation TV will come in black plastic enclosure and will be available in North America, Europe and the PAL region this fall at a recommended retail price (RRP) of $99, €99 for a standalone system. The price in the U.K. has not been announced yet. In addition, a bundle that includes a wireless controller (DualShock 3), 8GB memorycard, and the Lego Movie video game will be available at $139 in North America.

KitGuru Says: The Sony PlayStation TV seems to be a rather decent device that allows playing various games, including fully-fledged PS3 and PS4 titles as well as mobile titles originally designed for the PS Vita and the PSP. While it is impossible to say how popular the device will get in North America, Europe and the PAL region, it is obvious that it does have potential.

Sony has revealed that its upcoming line of Bravia 4K TV's will feature Playstation Now support, the gaming equipped TV sets will launch in June and range from $2099 for a 49 Inch model all the way up to $24,999 for an 85 Inch TV.

The new 4K sets were announced at CES back in January with the range spanning across nine different models with high prices all around, Playstation Now will also likely cost extra. In order to stream games directly to one of the new TV's you'll need a DualShock 3 controller, there is no word on whether or not a controller will be included, so buyers may want to incorporate that in to their plans.

playstation-now-1

Playstation Now is currently in beta form and will allow subscribers to stream PSOne, PS2 and PS3 games directly to a supported Sony device. However, the company does have plans to spread its support to more devices including tablets and smartphones from other brands. The service was originally planned to launch in Europe alongside North America although, due to our average internet speed, Sony has had to postpone the European launch.

KitGuru Says: If you were planning on spending between $2000 and $25,000 on a new 4K TV, then these Playstation Now equipped models may be the way to go. That said, I probably wouldn't go out of my way to buy a Playstation Now TV.

Backwards compatibility was thrown out with the release of the Xbox One and Playstation 4, Sony recently announced that its solution would be to stream games via Playstation Now but Microsoft has yet to come up with a plan. However, the company is considering Xbox 360 emulation for the Xbox One but nothing has been decided just yet.

Ex-Xbox head, Don Mattrick  said last year that backwards compatibility was backwards thinking but the company may backtrack on that, that said, it would first have to overcome a series of problems. At Microsoft's Build conference last week an audience member asked if Xbox 360 emulation was being worked on, to which lead developer Frank Savage replied:

“There are, but we’re not done thinking them through yet, unfortunately. It turns out to be hard to emulate the PowerPC stuff on the X86 stuff. So there’s nothing to announce, but I would love to see it myself.”

Microsoft-Corporation-Reluctantly-Cuts-Xbox-One-Price-by-50

Emulation might not be the only way to go though, last year Xbox One Director, Albert Penello, told GameSpot that the company could theoretically use its Azure cloud servers to stream Xbox 360 titles much like what Sony is doing with Playstation Now: “Like rendering full games like PlayStation Now and delivering it to the box. We just have to figure out how, over time, how much does that cost to deliver, how good is the experience.”

KitGuru Says: Nothing is set in stone yet and this is far from a confirmation but it looks like Microsoft is backtracking on Don Mattrick's comments from last year and seriously considering bringing backwards compatibility back. Would you guys consider picking up an Xbox One if you could continue to play all of your older Xbox 360 titles?

Sony revealed its plans for Playstation Now at CES in January, the game streaming service will include rental streaming options but it seems Sony might be looking to experiment with rental download options too as an option for one day, seven day and 30 day rentals appeared on titles in the Playstation store.

Sony recently updated the Playstation Network this week and its possible that this little leak was accidentally left behind. Upon investigation, website PSNStores was able to confirm the existence of rental options however, clicking on them didn't actually do anything.

psrentals0314-610

It is also possible that this slip up was meant to be a feature for select Playstation Now testers as the service is currently in closed beta in North America. Maybe Sony will shed some light on what happened at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) next week.

KitGuru Says: With services like Blockbuster gone, Digital game rentals could be handy and could help combat pre-owned game sales. That said, there would need to be a universal price plan in place and it would have to be affordable for it to succeed. Would you guys like to be able to digitally rent titles? How much would you be willing to pay to rent a game for a week?

The Playstation 4 might get some local backwards compatibility after all, according to Eurogamer, someone working on Sony's upcoming streaming service, Playstation Now, has revealed that while Playstation 3 games will still only work via streaming, Playstation 1 and 2 games are going to be emulated locally on the console.

Sony phased out hardware emulation soon after the PS3's original release but the console's firmware still contained emulators for the Playstation 1, Playstation 2 and the PSP. Apprently, the Vita is capable of emulating PS1 games flawlessly through software emulation, that said, smartphones these days can also emulate original Playstation games. According to Eurogamer's source, the same internal emulation strategy has been planned for the PS4, Sony is also said to be actively working on getting games to run without the PS3's blurry upscaling, in short, its going to work the same way an emulator would work on the PC with native HD resolutions.

Running classic games locally would undoubtedly deliver a superior experience for most gamers rather than streaming from Playstation Now, the one time download would probably be easier than constantly streaming a title for most people although hard drive space is going to be scarce this generation considering most games are around 30-50GB in size now.

KitGuru Says: This is all still rumour and speculation as the source hasn't actually been named but I think if this pans out, it would be a good move for Sony. Would you guys like to see local backwards compatibility come to the Playstation 4?
