As much as the internet can be a place where negativity goes to fester, game makers all over the world know that keeping in touch with your fan base through it is an important way to help maintain a game's popularity. And it's that line of communication between the players and Riot, which the League of Legends developer is looking to improve. To that end, it's launched a new regular blog, called “Riot Pls,” to let everyone know what it's doing.

By regular, Riot means quarterly, so it isn't coming every week. It's not designed as a breakdown of new content that's coming in the future. It will instead open up the offices at Riot to show what's having effort put into, so that if it ever seems like nothing much is happening, it's clear that that's not the case.

“We’re deep, deep in the weeds with all of our developers (engineers, designers, artists, etc) cleaning up the ‘tech debt',” said Riot in this first post. It's referencing the fact that the game was originally designed to facilitate 20,000 or so people and today it manages over 67 million regular players. That's proved and is proving to be quite a challenge for the developer, but it's something that it's working on.

With that in mind, one of the big things it's currently developing is a new client. Although Riot's been working on it for over a year already, it doesn't expect it to be ready until the launch of the 2016 season.

“After this, once it's ready to launch, you can expect more reliability, more responsiveness, and less buggy experiences. Ultimately, we want you to fight the player, not the game, so the updated client is oriented around getting you and your friends into League with minimal friction,” Riot said.

Other efforts from Riot's various teams at the moment include new seasonal changes at the start of seasons, as well as new events, better story telling and overall a higher quality bar for updates.

“We’re still trying to push the envelope with each new champion we release and not only are we improving with each skin we put out but we’re exploring other ways for you to customize your League experience in Season 2016,” it said.

The bottom line though with this update, is that Riot doesn't want anything to be a surprise for players any more. If they read the blogs, they'll always know what Rios is working on.

KitGuru Says: Do you think this is a good move by Riot? Making itself more open so that people at least know what it's working on might open it up to more criticism, but at least it'll show it's listening and working on popular complaints.

After Apple and Samsung Electronics dropped all lawsuits against each other outside the U.S., business ties between the two companies seem to be getting stronger. The South Korean conglomerate recently formed a standalone team of approximately 200 employees who will work exclusively on displays for Apple’s devices. LG Electronics also has a separate Apple-focused group within the company.

One of the key advantages of Apple’s mobile devices, such as iPhone smartphones and iPad media tablets, are high-quality retina class screens. For example, the latest Apple iPhone 6 features IPS displays with the so-called dual-domain technology for more accurate colours (full sRGB reproduction support is claimed) and wider viewing angles. The company’s premium laptops also feature advanced retina-class displays. Besides, Apple is the only company in the world to offer an all-in-one PC with 5K (5120*2880) display resolution.

Since Apple has very special requirements when it comes to displays, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics have special teams that develop monitors exclusively for Apple and are only allowed to share information about Apple business within the group, reports Bloomberg news-agency.

“The new exclusive team for Apple implies that the relationship between Samsung and Apple has improved,” said Jerry Kang, an analyst at Englewood, Colorado-based researcher IHS Inc. “This also suggests that Samsung Display will win screen orders from Apple, such as for the Apple Watch.”

Apple is probably the largest display panels customer of both Samsung Display and LG Display. Therefore, it is not completely surprising that the two companies have special teams focused on needs of their biggest client.

It remains to be seen is whether Apple will get exclusive display technologies from the two companies.

KitGuru Says: While Apple uses proper displays on mobile and high-end devices, many of the company’s entry-level products, such as MacBook Air, have very outdated screens. It would be great if Samsung or LG helped Apple to finally install high-quality displays on its relatively inexpensive products.

Earlier this year Intel Corp. unveiled its new strategy designed to boost interest for desktop computers in general and for high-performance desktops in particular. So far the company has outlined a number of initiatives and there are several more to come. At the Computex 2014 trade-show Intel, Samsung Electronics and other partners announced a plan to greatly reduce the price of ultra-high-definition displays and PCs with UHD monitors.

One of the best ways to improve user experience is to improve visual and multimedia experiences, for example, by increasing a display resolution. The ultra-high-definition (UHD) is clearly the next big thing for multiple industries (video, gaming, imaging, etc.), but to support such resolutions high-performance personal computers with advanced graphics cores are needed. Since at present displays with 4K (3840*2160) resolution are pretty expensive, only select people buy them. As a consequence, the demand for high-performance PCs remains on a relatively low level. Being the world’s largest microprocessor maker, Intel clearly wants to change that.

At the Computex trade-show Intel and Samsung announced plans to release a 23.6” 4K display priced at $399 (approximately £238 or €292; readers in the U.K. and Europe should add VAT) by the end of the third quarter. The Samsung monitor will use a PLS [plane-to-line switching] panel, will support the UHD resolution at 60Hz refresh rate, will feature 100 per cent sRGB colour gamut and will be Technicolor-certified. Later on there will be reasonably priced 4K displays from other companies, including TPV and ViewSonic.

Separately, Intel announced at the show that several PC makers, including EVS, Hibertek, Mitac, MSI, Loop and Wibtek, plan to release their inexpensive Intel Core-based all-in-one (AIO) PCs with 4K/UHD displays that will start at $999 (approximately £596 or €733; readers in the U.K. and Europe should add VAT).

While Intel clearly deserves a praise for its initiative to bring UHD displays to the masses, it should be noted that many industry-wide initiatives of the world’s largest chipmaker do not really work very well. For example, the company has been trying to make notebooks thinner for years now, but many components of ultra-thin laptops are still too expensive for the mainstream market.

KitGuru Says: A 23.6” 4K display for $399/£238/€292 sounds very interesting. But will the actual prices be that low?
