Pokémon Home is a cloud-based app which lets users store and trade Pokémon. Released by Nintendo, the app enables a Pokémon to live beyond the game where it was caught. The application is free, but there is premium plan which unlocks extra features and removes the limitations of the free version.

When a Pokémon is stored in Pokémon Home, that same Pokémon will be stored in Nintendo's servers, with the same characteristics as when it was uploaded. Besides this, trading with fellow Pokémon trainers is now easier, given that you can do it on a smartphone. Both versions of the application have different features.

According to Techradar, Nintendo developed the app with the new Pokémon Sword and Shield in mind. You can use Home to port Pokémon from one of the compatible games and services – Sword, Shield, Go, both “Let's Go” and Bank – to the app or between each other. The Pokémon have to be in the Pokédex of the game they are being transferred to. Pokémon that are moved to newer titles won't be able to come back to their original games.

With the app's launch, there are 35 new Pokémon added to the Pokémon Sword and Shield's Pokédex, including the starters of the first generation. With the new application, there's a chance that more Pokémon will be added to Pokémon Sword and Shield, and that new Pokémon titles will also be compatible with Pokémon Home.

Pokémon Home's basic plan is free, but it is somewhat limited. The premium subscription, on the other hand, will cost £2.69/£4.49/£14.49 for 1/3/12 months but most limitations are lifted, including storing up 6000 Pokémon, moving Pokémon from Pokémon Bank, placing up to 10 Pokémon on the Wonder Box (blind global trade) and up to 3 Pokémon in the GTS (matching criteria trade). You also get the ability to participate and host a Room Trade, and the Judge function becomes available to check “how strong your Pokémon are”.

Anyone that logs in Pokémon Home will receive a level 5 Pikachu. You can learn more about Pokémon Home on the official website, or download it now for the Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS.

Nintendo recently hosted its first Direct of the year. Focused on Pokémon, the Direct lasted for 20 minutes, and brought three new announcements: the reveal of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX, a remake of the classic Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance titles; the announcement of an Expansion Pass for Pokémon Sword and Shield, adding two new areas, and 200 Pokémon; and lastly, the release date for Pokémon Home was revealed.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX is a remake of the original Rescue Team Blue and Rescue Team Red, which were released for the Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance back in 2005. This full 3D remake takes the original two titles and combines them into a single package, allowing you to experience the life of a Pokémon in a whole new way. Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX has you “[b]uild your rescue team from the likes of Pikachu, Eevee and Charmander and complete missions to save Pokémon in the ever-changing mystery dungeon!” The game is set to release on the 6th of March 2020, and will cost £49.99 – although a demo is now available, if you’d like to try before you buy.

The second announcement came in the form of a Pokémon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass. The Expansion Pass will come in two parts, with the first scheduled for release by the end of June 2020, while the second part is due sometime during ‘fall’ 2020. Each part will bring with it a new area to explore; new Pokémon to fight and catch; new clothing items to wear; and various other additions. Part 2 will also include a new co-op play feature. Furthermore, these two new areas – The Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra – will each include their own legendary Pokémon, alongside new Galarian forms of familiar Pokémon. All in all, an additional 200 Pokémon will be added to Sword and Shield, as well as new Gigantamax forms of your starters.

The Expansion Pass will cost £26.99, and if you plan on purchasing it for both Sword and Shield, will cost you double. Buying the Expansion Pass will give you access to two new outfits immediately, but even if you haven't purchased the Expansion Pass, a free update will allow you to experience the first part of the new story for free, as well as receive Expansion Pass exclusive Pokémon through trading.

Speaking of trading, the final announcement was for the release date of Pokémon Home, the paid subscription service which allows you to transfer Pokémon between games. Set to launch in February 2020, you’ll be able to transfer any Pokémon which appear in the Pokémon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass from Pokémon Go, to the Switch title. More details on the service will be revealed prior to the app’s release.
