In the lead up to the next generation of consoles, Microsoft has been gearing up by acquiring a number of game studios, and bringing them under the umbrella of Xbox Games Studios. In the last year and a half, Xbox has acquired seven separate studios, all in the effort of strengthening its next generation lineup of games. It appears that Xbox isn’t done with acquiring studios however, as it has been claimed that the console manufacturer was in Poland scouting for studios which it could acquire.

Borys Nieśpielak, the director of the film ‘we are alright’ which focused on the development of indie games recently mentioned in a podcast that Microsoft was “shopping in Poland” for a studio to acquire. Translated by ‘S3V8’ on Twitter, Nieśpielak stated “And another [rumor], which isn't a rumor. This is a confirmed thing, but the information are (sic) uncertain. Microsoft was shopping in Poland. It's not known if they bought someone. […] It's known they were for sure in Poland. I know for sure that they talked to one studio.

S3V8 then pointed out the major independent studios that operate within Poland, namely •People Can Fly •Techland •The Astronauts •The Farm 51. People Can Fly are known best for their work on ‘Bulletstorm’. Techland meanwhile developed the original ‘Dead Island’ and later, ‘Dying Light’. The Astronauts worked on ‘The Vanishing of Ethan Carter’, and The Farm 51 are best known for ‘Get Even’.

Other Major Polish Studios such as Bloober Team or CD Projekt Red are publicly traded companies, and so are less likely to be acquired – doubly so with CD Projekt Red, which has a market capitalisation of over $6.7 billion.

It’ll be interesting to see if anything comes out of Microsoft’s trip to Poland. The country is host to a number of talented development studios, which could benefit greatly from the backing of a major player in the industry such as Xbox. The acquisition would be mutually beneficial as it would then help bolster Xbox’s game lineup, come the release of the next generation of consoles.

Being the President of the United States is a pretty big job so it's unlikely that Obama spends much time playing video games. However, the man himself has expressed his admiration for CD Projekt Red's “The Witcher” series but admits that it is still a part of his backlog and hasn't actually played it yet.

Back in 2011, Obama took a trip to Poland, where country officials presented him with a copy of the critically acclaimed RPG as a symbol of Poland's economic development. It's not every day that a world leader talks publicly (and positively) about a game but The President had nice things to say about the RPG series.

“The last time I was here, Donald Tusk, Poland's prime minister gave me a gift, the video game developed here in Poland that’s won fans the world over, The Witcher.” Obama Said. “I confess, I’m not very good at video games, but I’ve been told that it is a great example of Poland’s place in the new global economy. And it’s a tribute to the talents and work ethic of the Polish people as well as the wise stewardship of Polish leaders like prime minister Tusk.”

KitGuru Says: While it would have been even cooler if Obama came out and said that he had completed one of The Witcher games, it's still pretty cool that he acknowledges the series as an achievement for Poland's economy. Maybe he will get around to playing the games in time for The Witcher 3 next year!

Hewlett Packard, still one of the biggest names in the PC hardware game despite the shrinking market, is set to admit to mass corruption in its Polish arm, after the local government completed an industry wide investigation into bribes.

According to the accusations (via Reuters), HP staff stand accused of bribing government officials to take out contracts with the PC maker. Polish authorities claim several dozen people have been implicated in the scandal, as well as major IT industry heads, government officials and police officers. HP is set to discuss its own part in the corruption later today.

Polish government officials expressed their pleasure at the news, stating that this was a great breakthrough for a less corrupt Poland. They are said to have worked in conjunction with US agencies like the FBI and the SEC in bringing charges to bear.

In total some 70 charges have been brought against over 40 individuals, though one in particular was said to be behind the scheme: the former director of the IT Projects Centre. That unnamed person faces charges of accepting financial benefits of almost a million dollars.

The investigation has been ongoing since 2011 and still continues, with prosecutors not yet looking to take anyone to court.

KitGuru Says: It makes you wonder how much of this stuff goes on elsewhere in the world. Perhaps that's part of the reason companies like HP could become so dominant.
