Not perturbed by the fact that his Internet MANA party efforts in New Zealand failed to earn a seat in Parliament during the last general election, internet entrepreneur Kim Dotcom has announced his intention to bring the organisation to America, with plans to launch the Internet Party USA in 2015.

Making the announcement via Twitter as usual, Dotcom stated yesterday after news that he'd been cleared of claims that he'd breached his bail: “The Internet Party is coming to the United States in 2015. Stay tuned for our celebrity founders from the music, film and Internet industry.”

He also stated that in 2016 the Internet Party USA would be the worst nightmare for Hilary, referencing Mrs Clinton, who has been cited as a potential democratic candidate after President Obama's second term.

Meanwhile Dotcom has been pictured hanging out with musicians like Skrillex and Steve Aoki

Dotcom later tweeted out more details of the party, stating that it would be run by US Citizens and that his only role would be in public relations. Much of his involvement however will be dependant on how well his extradition trial – now pushed back to summer 2015 – goes. If he is deported to the US, he will likely be remanded in custody, however even if he wins and is allowed to stay in New Zealand, travelling to the US wouldn't be a smart plan.

Dotcom does know PR though. That's something he's very good at, as well as getting attention.

Funding will be a little harder, as the big parties spent hundreds of millions of dollars on their campaigns. Comparatively, Dotcom was said to have raised $4 million NZ for Internet MANA. Most of that however came from his personal fortunes, which are drastically reduced from what they once were.

KitGuru Says: How do you guys think the Internet Party will fare in the US? Pirate Parties have grown in influence throughout Europe in recent years, so maybe the Internet Party has a shot of making an impact. With the next election not until 2016, there's a bit more time to work with too.

One of the biggest criticisms of politicians, long standing political parties and all that goes along with them, is that they're antiquated. Often in practices but even more so in their ways of thinking, which is why it's interesting to watch Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom and his recently launched Internet Party, which is doing things in a far more contemporary fashion.

While no official policies have been announced as of yet, Dotcom has suggested that the party will have a big focus on internet freedoms, internet access and internet privacy (extending into the real world),which are very modern issues, but they do extend far beyond that and even tap into some core freedoms of many countries: freedom of speech, copyright law etc. This is quite refreshing thinking when compared with a lot of political bodies around the world, many of whom are headed by middle-aged millionaires, who have very little knowledge of technology or the internet. David Cameron's hard-on for net-filtering is a clear indication of that.

Of course Dotcom himself is approaching that sort of age and certainly has a vast fortune behind him – even if a lot of it is still under lock and chain – but his appreciation for technology is clear and his anti-authoritarian streak could really shake up New Zealand politics.

But beyond policies, just the way the Internet Party is looking to recruit members and build up its coffers is fresh. Going far beyond a website and mailing list, Dotcom's party is launching iOS and Android apps, which will give supporters the chance to become digital card carrying members of the party, for just $1.29 NZ for three years.

While both major parties in the UK have apps of their own, Dotcom's is barely a couple of months old. The push for digital interaction isn't surprising for Dotcom, but the seriousness of its development certainly is.

Kitguru Says: It seems unlikely Dotcom's party will stop there. Once its manifesto lands in the next few weeks, it'll be interesting to see how it progresses. Look for Mega encryption to be integrated some how.

The Internet Party is the name of digital entrepreneur Kim Dotcom's new political party, giving you little reason to guess what one of its main concerns will be. Much of it will be focused around improving the online privacy of individuals, restricting the spying capabilities (legally, not technologically) of intelligence agencies, as well as providing New Zealanders with better access to cheaper, faster internet.

The announcement came from – where else – Dotcom's Twitter account, where he denied earlier rumours about the party's name and also revealed its logo: “My new political party won't be named Mega Party. We are the Internet Party. Here's our logo for the first time.”

We first heard about Dotcom's political aims last year when he discussed contesting elections in 2014. However he made it clear at the time that he wouldn't be running himself, just helping to run the party. It also coincided with him stepping down as director of the file locker company, Mega.

He's also made it clear from his recent announcement that the Internet Party would not be launching at his upcoming birthday celebration Party Party, which will also launch his new album and commemorate the two year anniversary of his arrest during the raid on his home that saw his assets seized and Megaupload shut down.

KitGuru Says: While I'm not sure how much success Dotcom will have in terms of getting someone into power, he does have a bit of a Robin Hood image these days. Perhaps he'll at least be able to draw attention to the issues of privacy and internet freedoms in New Zealand – he's certainly helped do that in the rest of the world.
