Advanced Micro Devices and its partners have started to cut prices of graphics cards based on the Radeon R9 285 graphics processing units in Europe. It is unclear how long will the promotion will last and whether it is a widespread price-cut or an attempt to clear out some local stocks.

Hardware.fr reports that at least three retailers in France have reduced prices of AMD Radeon R9 285 graphics cards to less than €180. Typically, such graphics cards retail for about €200 or more. The price-cut will put AMD’s Radeon R9 285 graphics adapter in a better competitive position against Nvidia Corp.’s GeForce GTX 960.

amd_radeon_r9_285_sq

The AMD Radeon R9 285 is powered by the Tonga Pro graphics processing unit, which sports 1792 stream processors, 112 texture mapping units, 32 raster operations units as well as 256-bit memory bus. The graphics chip is clocked at 918MHz, whereas recommended GDDR5 memory frequency is 5.50GHz. All Radeon R9 285 graphics cards carry 2GB of memory. AMD's Tonga GPU is the company's only graphics chip that features the GCN 1.2 architecture.

Earlier this year AMD said that it needed to reposition some of its products in order to sell through existing inventory of graphics cards. For months, the company and its partners primarily focused on selling the flagship Radeon R9 290-series products to end-users, but recently prices of the high-end offerings stabilized. It is possible that now AMD and its allies want to clear the road for the company’s new mainstream offerings, which is why they are slashing prices of the Radeon R9 285.

In the U.K. it is possible to get a Radeon R9 285 graphics card starting from £139.99, including VAT.

Corsair did not reveal reasons for price-cuts, but given that the competition on the market of gaming gear is pretty intense, it is not surprising that the company wants to improve its positions by offering better deals to its customers.

The price of the Corsair Gaming Sabre RGB Optical gaming mouse with 6400dpi sensor looks especially attractive. The Corsair Gaming Sabre RGB laser with 8200dpi sensor is now also considerably more affordable than it used to be and also less expensive than direct competitors from other companies.

The revised prices of Corsair Raptor, Corsair Gaming and Corsair Vengeance headsets and mice will become effective in the coming days, make sure to check your favourite retailer.

It is unknown whether Corsair plans to slash prices of its devices in other European countries as well as then U.S., but it is a possible scenario.

Advanced Micro Devices plans to lower prices of its A-series “Kaveri” accelerated processing units, according to a media report. The company wants to fight back some market share from Intel Corp. before the end of the year and will lower prices of popular APUs so that to make them more competitive. In addition, AMD will discontinue the A10-7700K chip in order to boost demand for more expensive products.

AMD plans to slash prices of its A10-7850K, A10-7800, A8-7600 and A6-7400K accelerated processing units on the 28th of November, 2014, reports Hermitage Akihabara web-site citing sources in Japanese retail. Exact details about the price-cuts are unknown, but it is unlikely that the prices will be reduced radically: the chips are not completely outdated and AMD does not need huge price-cuts to sell them.

amd_fusion_kaveri_steamroller_piledriver_excavator

Keeping in mind that Advanced Micro Devices unofficially cut prices on select central processing units and accelerated processing units in early September, it is about time for AMD to reconsider its prices ahead of the holiday season. It is noteworthy that AMD in many cases does not make formal announcements regarding its price reductions and even does not update its official price list on its web-site. As a result, in many cases retailers sell AMD’s chips at prices below official quotes from AMD.

amd_kaveri_specs_current

In addition, the company will discontinue its A10-7700K “Black Edition” (four Steamroller cores, Radeon R7 graphics engine with 384 stream processors (GCN 1.1), 3.40/3.80GHz, 95W, 4MB total dedicated L2 cache, socket FM2+) APU in order to make enthusiasts buy more expensive A10-7850K “Black Edition” APU with unlocked multiplier. Considering the fact that AMD is going to slash price of the A10-7850K, ceasing to supply its cheaper rival is a right idea as it will help to maintain desktop average selling prices at around current levels.

AMD did not comment on the news-story.

KitGuru Says: AMD’s price-cuts will make PCs based on its chips slightly more affordable. Unfortunately, since Intel Corp. is rumoured to be flooding the market with its processors these days, it is unlikely that AMD will manage to fight back any significant amount of market share even in the low-end.

Advanced Micro Devices this week quietly updated its official price-list and published the new prices of its A-series accelerated processing units. In addition to updating its official price-list, AMD also notified several web-sites about price-cuts on low-end models not listed at the company’s web-site.

For the first time since the formal launch of the latest-generation AMD A-series “Kaveri” accelerated processing units AMD reduced their prices by 8 – 16 per cent depending on the model. The most affordable unlocked “Kaveri” – the dual-core AMD A6-7400K – got even more significant price slash of 22 per cent and is now available for $58 (in 1000-unit quantities).

In addition, AMD reduced prices on select A-series APUs that belong to the previous-generation code-named “Richland”, according to the information AMD provided to the Tech Report and Tom’s Hardware.

amd_a_series_pricing

What should be noted is that even though AMD has the official price-list on its web-site, it does not usually reflect real-world prices since the company does not update it too often. For example, AMD slashed prices on select A-series models on the 1st of September, 2014, but it never reflected the move in the formal price-list. Moreover, even now AMD’s official price (for direct AMD customers in 1000-unit tray quantities) of the A10-6800K is $122, but the SEP [suggested e-tail price] of the chip revealed by the Tech Report is $112, which generally means that customers of U.S. online stores can buy AMD hardware at a lower price than direct customers of AMD.

The changes in the official price-list of AMD echoes the company’s commitment to make its products cheaper in a bid to improve their competitive positions. AMD is usually flexible in terms of pricing and there are many examples when AMD slashed prices of its chips without making formal notifications.

Those, who are lucky enough to get an AMD A10-series APU at a right place until the end of the month will be able to get one of three games for free: Murdered: Soul Suspect, Thief, Sniper Elite 3, or a copy of Corel Aftershot Pro 2 for $5.

KitGuru Says: It is nice to see that AMD’s A-series APUs are getting more affordable. Perhaps, this will make them more popular among those who need low-cost PCs with basic performance and a decent graphics processor.

Nvidia Corp. has quietly began to provide subsidies to system builders who sell gaming personal computers with its GeForce GTX Titan Z graphics card inside.

Nvidia’s GeForce GTX Titan Z graphics card has always looked like a rare exotic rather than a solution for gamers. At the price of $3000/£2000 per unit it is not easy to find a customer for the dual-chip flagship graphics board. Moreover, Nvidia even decided not to provide samples to the press and created a mystery about actual performance of the Titan Z. While rare, exotic and mysterious products fascinate people in the world of fashion and luxury, it turns out that this strategy just does not work in the world of PC hardware.

SweClockers reports that at present Nvidia can provide up to a 37 per cent discount per single GeForce GTX Titan Z graphics card to system builders in Sweden. The recommended price of the Titan Z in the country is 27000 SEK with taxes ($3877, £2336), but Nvidia can slash 10000 SEK ($1436, £865) if the graphics card is installed into a gaming PC. As a result, systems featuring Nvidia’s GeForce GTX Titan Z get more competitive in terms of pricing than PCs powered by AMD’s Radeon R9 295 X2.

nvidia_geforce_gtx_titan_z_1

At present it is unclear whether Nvidia also provides similar discounts on the GeForce GTX Titan Z graphics cards in different countries, but such scenario is a highly likely one.

The Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan Z is powered by two Nvidia GK110 GPUs in their full configuration with 2880 stream processors, 240 texture units and 48 raster operations pipelines. The graphics processors operate at 705MHz in default mode and 876MHz in “boost” mode. The board features 12GB of GDDR5 memory (6GB with 384-bit bus per GPU) that operates at 7.0GHz effective clock-rate. Given that clock-rates of the GeForce GTX Titan Z graphics cards are lower compared to those of the GeForce GTX Titan Black, two Titan Black graphics cards in SLI mode will always outperform the Titan Z.

Nvidia did not comment on the news-story.

KitGuru Says: It is completely unclear why Nvidia wants to keep its $3000 price-tag on the GeForce GTX Titan Z if demand is not high. The graphics card clearly does not outperform the Radeon R9 295X2 in all benchmarks. Meanwhile, the dual-chip flagship from AMD costs $1500. Slashing the price of the GeForce GTX Titan Z to a sub-$2000 level (preferably to $1500) would clearly boost demand for the graphics board, but would naturally infuriate current owners of the Titan Z.

Although Advanced Micro Devices pins most of its hopes on hybrid accelerated processing units (APUs) these days, it continues to supply traditional central processing units for performance enthusiasts. In a bid to make its FX-series line a little bit more competitive, the company plans to cut-down their prices in the coming weeks.

On the first of September, 2014, AMD intends to introduce three new FX 8-series central processing units and slash the price of the FX-9590 and the FX-6300 microprocessors, reports Hexus web-site. The move is designed to make the FX-series more competitive against Intel Core i3 and Intel Core i5 products based on the Haswell Refresh and the Devil’s Canyon designs.

The price of the AMD FX-9590, which currently retails for £225, will be dropped to £175, a rather significant price-cut. The price of AMD FX-6300 with six cores will be reduced to around £70.

KitGuru Says: Keeping in mind that AMD’s FX processors are not particularly popular among enthusiasts, it is hard to say whether their price-cut will make them more appealing to performance-demanding customers. At the end of the day, price is only one factor that affects competitive positions of PC platforms.
