Earlier this week, rumours claimed that Sony was creating new PlayStation hardware, separate from the upcoming PS5 revision and rumoured PS5 Pro. It was quickly theorised that this could be a new handheld, like a PS Vita 2. Now, sources have clarified that Sony is working on a dedicated Remote Play device, rather than a native-gaming handheld.

According to sources speaking with Insider-Gaming, Sony's new PlayStation handheld is codenamed the ‘Q Lite' and it will primarily focus on being a dedicated PlayStation Remote Play companion device.

The handheld will apparently be capable of up to 1080p/60FPS streaming from a PS5 console to the handheld. Due to the setup, both systems would need constant access to the internet.

The Q Lite is said to be in the ‘QA' phase, meaning it could be ready to hit the market sometime in 2024.

KitGuru Says: The PSP was a beloved handheld but the Vita lacked software support to get players on board. If real, the Q Lite will be very different to both, acting as a console companion device, rather than a dedicated gaming system.

Rumours have persisted for a while now that Sony is working on a beefed up PlayStation 5, and while this may be the case, one industry insider has now revealed that the console manufacturer is also working on new hardware which is not a PS5 Pro – leading some to hope that the PSVITA might return.

As part of a recent livestream, industry insider Tom Henderson spoke on a number of topics from the PlayStation 5 Pro to the cancellation of E3 and more. Perhaps the most interesting revelation came in the discussion surrounding new and upcoming PlayStation hardware, with Henderson stating:

“There’s also another piece of Sony hardware that will be released before the Pro that I’m more likely to talk about very soon,” adding that “there is more hardware coming from Sony than what’s been reported on at the moment.”

Henderson then elaborated further via Twitter saying “For those asking, the new Sony hardware I alluded to in yesterday's stream hasn't been reported on yet”. For context, Henderson himself has in the past reported on a number of upcoming pieces of hardware including a PS5 Pro; a PlayStation 5 with a removable disc drive; PlayStation earbuds and a new line of PlayStation headsets – meaning this new hardware is none of these.

It will be interesting to see what this new hardware ultimately ends up being, but with Henderson stating that it will be released before the long-rumoured PS5 Pro, hopefully we won’t have too long to wait before finding out.

Many fans cried out against an announcement by Sony earlier this year when they revealed their intentions to shut down the online stores for both the PS3 and Vita, essentially preventing you from purchasing any new games. The backlash was quick and strong, and Sony backtracked on this decision – however they have now once again taken a step closer towards the death of these consoles.

In an email sent to PlayStation 3 and Vita owners, Sony announced that “Starting October 27th, 2021, you can no longer use a credit or debit card, or a payment method such as PayPal, to buy digital content or add funds to your wallet when visiting PlayStation Store on your PS3 or PS Vita.”

What this means is that while you can still purchase items from the PlayStation Store on both systems, in order to do so you must first buy a PlayStation Store gift card, or alternatively add funds to your wallet through the PS App (or a PS4/5).

The reason for doing so is clearly a security one, and though it does mean that players must engage in a few extra steps before buying any content from the store, it is ultimately good for security – and much much better than shutting the stores down entirely. Hopefully this is as far as the console manufacturer goes however, and they do not introduce further measures to limit these decade and a half old stores.

Many PlayStation fans were left disappointed when Sony announced that it would be closing its PS3 and PS Vita stores, meaning that players would no longer be able to purchase digital games on either device. The backlash from fans and the industry at large was swift and clear, and following this Sony has now backtracked on this closure, keeping the stores open.

Making the announcement on the PlayStation blog, President & CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Jim Ryan himself said “Recently, we notified players that PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita devices was planned to end this summer. Upon further reflection, however, it’s clear that we made the wrong decision here. So today I’m happy to say that we will be keeping the PlayStation Store operational for PS3 and PS Vita devices. PSP commerce functionality will retire on July 2, 2021 as planned.”

Though Ryan explained that the initial announcement was born from “a number of factors, including commerce support challenges for older devices and the ability for us to focus more of our resources on newer devices where a majority of our gamers are playing on,” he then admitted that “we see now that many of you are incredibly passionate about being able to continue purchasing classic games on PS3 and PS Vita for the foreseeable future, so I’m glad we were able to find a solution to continue operations.”

Ryan concluded by saying “Thank you for sharing your feedback with us – we’re always listening and appreciate the support from our PlayStation community”. In the wake of Sony having made a number of questionable decisions in recent months, impacting public perception of the company (such as the decision to not greenlight a sequel to Days Gone), it is good to see that the console manufacturer is still listening to the fans.

With the evolution of technology, it is only natural that eventually older hardware and software get left behind. It would appear as though this will be the case with the PlayStation 3, PS Vita and PSP, which will all reportedly see their online stores shuttered for good later this year.

Though not yet confirmed by Sony themselves, TheGamer reports that PlayStation is planning to shut down the digital stores for the PS3, PSP and PS Vita. The PS3 and PSP will see their stores shut on the 2nd of July, while PS Vita users will have slightly longer – until the 27th of August.

Following these dates, players will no longer be able to purchase neither games nor DLC digitally – not even from the consoles themselves. Fortunately your library will remain, meaning that any software you have previously purchased will be able to be redownloaded even after these dates.

While it was inevitable that these services would eventually be suspended, it is a shame nonetheless, for the sake of consumers as well as game preservation. Back in October last year, purchasing titles for all three consoles was removed from the web browser and PS App. Players could still access the respective stores from the consoles themselves however. If this rumour pans out, then even that will no longer be the case.

Of course, all this should be taken with a pinch of salt until Sony themselves confirm this news. Still, if you were thinking of buying any PS3, PSP or PS Vita games, now might be the time to do so.

In the lead up to the launch of the PlayStation 5, Sony appears to be settling its affairs in preparation for the new console. After recently revealing that it will be revamping the Trophy system, Sony has now announced that the PlayStation Store on the web will be seeing a number of changes, including the removal of all PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, and PSP games from the store.

As reported by PushSquare, later this month, just prior to the launch of the PlayStation 5, Sony will launch a revamped PlayStation Store for web and mobile. Some of the changes coming with the revamp include removing the ability to purchase themes, avatars and apps such as Netflix or YouTube.

That’s not all however, as you will also no longer be able to purchase PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita or PSP games from the web and mobile stores. Of course, you can still access and purchase games from these consoles, though you will have to navigate the respective consoles’ stores from the hardware itself.

Lastly, the current wishlist will also be removed – so make sure to note down all the games in your list before these changes come into effect.

While all of these changes appear to be negative, it appears to be all in service of the PlayStation 5 which will come with a wholly revamped store, which is said to include a much more effective wishlisting feature, among other various improvements.

With how rudimentary the PlayStation Store has been in many ways, especially when it comes to features such as wishlisting, it makes sense that in order to fully fix the digital storefront, a lot of older and unsupported systems needed to be cleaned up.

KitGuru says: Are you excited for the revamped store? How many games are in your wishlist? What do you think the PS5’s UI will look like? Let us know down below.

Last month, it was announced that Sony Japan would be discontinuing the PlayStation Vita very soon. That day has now arrived, with the final batch of the two SKUs of the Vita shipping out with no plans to create more stock.

We already knew that the end was near for the Vita. Sony announced that it would be axing production on physical PlayStation Vita games by the end of March this year. In recent years, Sony has also expressed disinterest in the handheld market, with little desire to return to it, even after the success of the Nintendo Switch.

PlayStation Vita production has now wound-down in Japan, once any remaining retail stock goes away, there won't be any more made. Production on EU and US SKUs will also likely end soon.

While there was some first-party game support early on in the Vita’s life, eventually, indie developers and JRPG makers were relied upon to keep the console alive. Unfortunately, this is likely going to be the last handheld console we see from Sony for a long time, if not ever.

KitGuru Says: The PSP was a huge success but for whatever reason, Sony didn't try as hard when the Vita came out and instead put all of its investment in the PS4. That turned out to be a good decision, as the PS4 has been a huge success. Still, it is sad to see that such a promising console didn't get a fair chance. Did any of you own a PS Vita? Are you thinking about grabbing one before they disappear for good?

The PlayStation Vita has struggled over the years, with Sony seemingly giving up on the handheld within a few years of launch. Now, it is almost time for production to come to an end, with Sony announcing that it will soon stop making the PS Vita in Japan.

We already know that Sony is axing production on physical PlayStation Vita games by the end of March this year. We also know that Sony has little interest in the handheld gaming market at this point, despite the recent success of the Nintendo Switch. We heard last year that Sony was planning to end production on the PS Vita entirely fairly soon, now we are starting to get more information on that front.

The PS Vita's wind-down will begin in Japan. PlayStation Japan confirmed this week that the Vita will be discontinued soon, although an exact date has not been given. Production in Europe and the US will likely end shortly after.

While there was some first-party game support early on in the Vita's life, eventually, indie developers and JRPG makers were relied upon to keep the console alive. Unfortunately, this is likely going to be the last handheld console we see from Sony for a long time, if not ever.

KitGuru Says: I never quite understood why there wasn't more buzz around the PS Vita, especially after the success of the PSP. Still, at least we still have Nintendo holding things down in the portable console market. Did any of you own a PS Vita?

Despite a tiny £1.29 price tag, the collective sales on indie game Little Adventure on the Prairie has managed to fund developer Infinite Madaa Studio’s next title. This is thanks to its shift in target market, aiming to please achievement hunters with an easy-to-unlock Platinum trophy for an accessible price.

The original effort behind porting the Android title was to ensure that Little Adventure landed on Nintendo’s 3DS platform, until Infinite Madaa ran into money problems, according to creator Salem Al-Ghanim in an interview with Kotaku. This is when a friend stepped in, not only providing a solution to his problems, but a way to generate enough funds that the studio would thrive.

“A friend of mine suggested to release the game on PS4 and Vita and add an easy Platinum to it with a cheap price,” said Al-Ghanim. “This way a lot of people buy it and we would get the funding we need for our next game.”

Image: PlayStation

This trend gained prominence thanks to ★★★★★ 1000 Top Rated, a game that geared its entire marketing campaign into showcasing that players could achieve a Platinum trophy in under an hour. Sony removed the £1.29 title temporarily last year, instructing the developers to clean up any mention of trophies within advertising, however it looks as though the studio has abandoned the property.

While Little Adventure on the Prairie continues this method in some form, it remains true to being a video game first and foremost, with all trophies naturally unlocked through progression. All 22 trophies, split between 6 Bronze, 8 Silver, 7 Gold and of course, 1 Platinum cam be unlocked in as little as 20 minutes, alluring players to even pick up a relatively dead console in Sony’s PS Vita.

Needless to say, not everyone is happy with the practice, with some believing games such as Little Adventure on the Prairie offer little substance, however others feel that this is justified in the low price. It seems as though Infinite Madaa’s next game, Chromia, will be a little more comprehensive according to Al-Ghanim. “We did get a good amount of funding from it, but we want Chromia to be perfect so we will take our time with the development.”

KitGuru Says: This could also have implications on the Vita, although it’s difficult to tell how just yet. Renewed interest in a console that seemed to lose its legs years ago will surely catch Sony’s attention, though. How do you feel about title geared towards achievements and trophies?

Nintendo has arguably reinvigorated the handheld gaming market this year with the launch of the Nintendo Switch. The two-in-one console is already getting a ton of third-party support from big publishers but it seems that Nintendo will be free to go uncontested, as Sony is still uninterested in pushing back with a new PSP or PS Vita.

Sony's original PSP was very successful and while the PS Vita was a solid upgrade, support for the console swiftly waned. However, with the Switch doing so well, many have been wondering if Sony may consider reviving its portable console.

Speaking with Bloomberg, Sony Interactive Entertainment president, Andrew House, was asked whether or not Sony would release a successor to the PS Vita. Here is what House came back with: “The Nintendo device is a hybrid device and that’s a different approach and strategy. We have not seen that as being a huge market opportunity.”

Sony seems to be betting on smartphones being the future, with House noting that it is a “single key device that is always with you”. With that in mind, Sony has established its own studio to create mobile games, so that seems to be where the company's ‘handheld' gaming focus is being placed.

KitGuru Says: I always thought it was a shame that the PS Vita didn't live up to the PSP. However, as the Switch has shown, handheld game consoles are far from being dead, though Nintendo has the advantage of also being a home console. Would you guys like to see Sony revive the PSP/Vita? Do you think a new portable PlayStation would be successful?

With the launch of the Nintendo Switch, we are starting to see a resurgence of interest in handheld gaming. This has given hope to some of Sony's dedicated Vita fans but unfortunately, it doesn't seem like Sony is planning on getting back into the handheld arena any time soon.

At one point in time, Sony was huge in the handheld space with the PSP but as Sony Interactive Entertainment America head, Shawn Layden, puts it, the Vita didn't just didn't ever reach “critical mass”. Due to this, the Vita quickly dropped on Sony's list of priorities and while a lot of people still use it as a dedicated indie game or remote play system, the focus right now is purely on home console gaming.

Here is what Shawn Layden had to say during an interview with TIME: “To be honest, the Vita just didn't reach critical mass in the US or Western Europe. I don't know if it was that it was more technology people had to carry around, or more things to charge, or whether their phone or tablet were taking care of that. But once the content slowed in that pipeline, it became hard to keep the Vita as a going concern.”

“It's definitely what that Nintendo fanbase has been waiting for. When you look at our numbers, I think it shows that a lot of gamers are a two-console family. And quite often those two consoles are PlayStation and Nintendo sitting side-by-side.”

KitGuru Says: Most of my younger years were spent primarily gaming on handhelds so I think I'll always have a soft spot for them. It would be nice to see a powerful, well supported PS Vita successor but it doesn't sound like that is ever going to happen. Did any of you own a PSP or a Vita? Do you think Sony gave up on handhelds too soon?

While Nintendo still seems to be flourishing in the handheld games market, Sony has been struggling ever since it left the PSP behind. While the PSP dominated, its successor, the Vita has struggled and game developers just aren't that interested in the device.

As a result, we probably won't be seeing Sony launch a successor to the Vita as Sony's Shuhei Yoshida believes that the current gaming market is “not healthy” for the handheld platform. Obviously a big part of this is due to the rise in popularity of smartphones and tablets.

ps_vita_2000

Yoshida's comments were made at the Eurogamer Expo last week. When asked about a potential PS Vita 2, he responded: “That's a tough question. People have mobile phones and it's so easy to play games on smartphones. And many games on smartphones are free, or free to start. I myself am a huge fan of PlayStation Vita and we worked really hard on designing every aspect. Touch-based games are fun–there are many games with really good design. But having sticks and buttons make things totally different.”

Right now, the PlayStation Vita is primarily a console for Japanese-made titles, so there are plenty of JRPG style games but the library is a bit thin on other genres.

Sony has officially revealed the release date for the Playstation TV in Europe as well as the list of games available on day one. The new device will allow you to stream PS4 games to another TV in the house via the ‘Remote Play' feature, you'll also be able to play PSP, PS Vita and PS One games.

The mini console will cost £84.99 with hundreds of games available on day one, the library is set to expand over time, although it will mostly include backlog titles rather than anything new. The full list of compatible games has been posted to the Playstation Blog.

The Playstation TV only comes with 1GB of flash storage but you will be able to store and run games off of an SD card for extra space. The console will be compatible with both the Dual Shock 4 and Dual Shock 3 controllers. It will release on the 14th of November.

Some big titles to be supported include the God of War collection, Metal Gear Solid, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories and Spyro the Dragon.

KitGuru Says: The Playstation TV is essentially a cheaper PS Vita that plugs straight in to your TV. It seems like a pretty cool device although, I'm more interested in seeing what it can do when hacked and made to run custom software. What do you guys think of the Playstation TV? Is it a good idea? Will it fall by the wayside much like the Ouya?

While micro video game consoles only compatible with mobile and cloud games have yet to prove their feasibility, it looks like Sony Computer Entertainment is confident about its PS Vita-based non-mobile device. At the E3 trade-show the company said that later this year it will start to sell its PlayStation TV console (originally known as the PlayStation Vita TV in Japan) in North America, Europe and the PAL region.

Sony’s PlayStation TV video game console is based on the same hardware as the PlayStation Vita mobile game console (quad-core ARM Cortex-A9, PowerVR SGX543MP graphics core, etc.) and is compatible with games originally designed for the PS Vita, the PlayStation Portable as well as the original PlayStation (select games are supported). The PS TV also supports PS4 remote play and wireless controllers (DualShock 3 and 4). Eventually, the PS TV is expected to support PS3 games thanks to the PlayStation Now cloud service. According to Sony, the PS TV offers a lineup of over 1000 titles.

Originally Sony released the PlayStation Vita TV product in Japan and other Asian regions on the 14th of November, 2013. The console has proven to be popular with consumers looking for an easy-to-use gaming system.

In North American and European countries the PlayStation TV will compete against various other micro consoles, which are mostly powered by the Google Android operating systems and support appropriate games. More capable competitor for the PlayStation TV will be Amazon’s Fire TV set-top-box, which not only supports games, but provides other services as well.

The Sony PlayStation TV will come in black plastic enclosure and will be available in North America, Europe and the PAL region this fall at a recommended retail price (RRP) of $99, €99 for a standalone system. The price in the U.K. has not been announced yet. In addition, a bundle that includes a wireless controller (DualShock 3), 8GB memorycard, and the Lego Movie video game will be available at $139 in North America.

KitGuru Says: The Sony PlayStation TV seems to be a rather decent device that allows playing various games, including fully-fledged PS3 and PS4 titles as well as mobile titles originally designed for the PS Vita and the PSP. While it is impossible to say how popular the device will get in North America, Europe and the PAL region, it is obvious that it does have potential.

Sony's Playstation Portable handheld console was hugely popular, in-fact until the release of the Playstation 4, it was the fastest selling console in the UK on release. However, all good things come to an end and with Sony's recent focus on the PS Vita, it's time to put the old PSP to bed, as a result, Sony has finally discontinued its older generation handheld in Japan.

The PSP had a good run, the handheld has been out in Japan for ten years now but Sony will be replacing it with two new Playstation Vita value bundles and in an effort to boost the device's popularity, Japanese PSP owners will be able to trade in their old handhelds and get a discount on a shiny new one.

Sony-PSP-1000-Body

The PSP was originally announced in 2003, it released in Japan in 2004 and then took another year to hit Europe and the US. The PSP 2000 was launched in 2007 which was quickly followed by the PSP 3000 in 2008.

Afterwards Sony tried to push its luck with a digital only version- the PSP Go, which was no where near as popular as previous models. The PSP's successor, the PS Vita, was released in 2012 but hasn't received the same level of popularity.

KitGuru Says: The PSP was a fantastic handheld for its time and it received a lot of fun games. The PS Vita hasn't really emulated the previous console's success. Do any of you guys still own a PSP? Have you been tempted to upgrade to a Vita?

Japanese developer Atlus, just announced Persona 5, exclusively for the Playstation 3, proving that the ageing platform still has some life left. It doesn't end there though, Persona Q for the 3DS, Persona 4: Dancing All Night for the Vita and Persona 4: The Ultimax Ultra Suplex Hold were also announced.

The Persona 5 teaser doesn't give anything away, it just shows off a few chairs and ball and chains:

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mZssK05WYo']

The message is a little creepy too: “You are slave, want emancipation?” The game won't be coming out until winter 2014.

Now lets talk about some spin offs, we'll start off with 3DS title: Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth. This game will be a dungeon crawler and feature the heroes from Persona 3 and Persona 4. The game will release on the 5th of June 2014:

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etfqRXPXbQQ']

The Playstation Vita title might not be as appealing as the 3DS one though. Persona 4: Dancing All Night will be a sound/action game where players will compete in “battle dances” against shadows. It's set for launch during autumn of next year. If dance battles are your kind of thing, here's the trailer.

Persona 4: The Ultimax Ultra Suplex Hold also doubles as Persona 4 Arena 2. This will be a PS3 fighting exclusive and thats pretty much it: you have the Persona characters duelling it out. Persona 4 Arena 2 will launch next summer.

The bad part is, western release dates haven't yet been announced, so there's no telling if these games will hit Europe or North America but hopefully they will.

Kitguru Says: Japan has a history of keeping some of its best games to itself. Monster Hunter Online, Monster Hunter 4, Fatal Frame and while Xenoblade did arrive eventually- it took a while. I'd like to see more Japanese games make way over here.

In efforts to unify its online services, Sony is about to change the name of its now 4 year running “PlayStation Network” (PSN) to the “Sony Entertainment Network” (SEN). SEN which was previously named Qriocity represents all of Sony's online streaming services including games, video, music and eBooks and up until now has been available to varied extents around the world on a range of Sony's devices including some of its BRAVIA TV's and of course the PS3.

The move to turn the PSN into SEN is scheduled to take place at some stage today and will occur as a purely aesthetic change at this time, meaning there will be no service disruptions during the transition apart from a software update becoming available for both the PS3 and PS Vita that rolls in the rebranding and renames PSN accounts to SEN accounts. At the time of the update, users will also need to agree to new policies in order to continue using their account. The updated agreements give explanation to the location-based services for the PS Vita and list changes to parental controls for sub-master accounts.

As a result of merging all of Sony's online services together in this re-branding move, the company has said it will make for an easier means as a PSN account holder to access other non-game services such as Music Unlimited, Video Store and PlayMemories Online (previously called Personal Space) using a variety of network-connected devices.

This transition is based on Sony’s goal to enhance its unique digital entertainment offering. As a series of these activities Sony started last September, PlayStation Network will be aligned with “Sony Entertainment Network.” This helps us get closer to our goal of establishing a global comprehensive network platform of services across games, movies, music and more, all accessible from one convenient account“.

KitGuru says: Perhaps also a much welcomed move due to last year's hacking frenzy tarnishing the PSN branding.
