Shoreditch, a little over a decade ago was a dangerous and violent part of east London, but today its one of the trendiest spots and home to many startups and creatives alike. Techspace provided MSI with a workspace for people to flex their creativity in their latest competition.

MSI held their first ever photography competition last weekend in the Techspace in Shoreditch. The room was kitted out with strobe lights, various props, professional models, cameras, laptops and some very tasty looking cupcakes. Amateur and professional photographers alike were invited to attend to shoot the best picture.

Instead of clocking the CPU/GPU to the limit for maximum in-game framerates, the concept here is to create a lightweight, long-battery-life design tool that will enable creative people to be more productive. Think ‘Apple with a Windows OS’.

Inside TechSpace, there were 2 shooting areas (plain white background and a living room environment), plenty of lights, windows, cupcakes and coffee. The centrepiece for the creative shoot was the PS63, which comes with this baseline specification:-

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-8565U
  • GPU: Intel UHD Graphics 620
  • Display: 15.6”, Full HD (1920 x 1080), IPS
  • Storage: 512GB SSD
  • RAM: 16GB DDR4
  • Weight: 1.65 kg (3.6 lbs)

To really display the power of the laptops they had the entrants shoot images of the models in the various settings and then edit them then and there on the P-series laptops. It was incredible to see what people were able to create on the day, and the laptops certainly seemed up for the challenge.

MSI are also holding a Global challenge for the rest of this month, you can find the details on the MSI website HERE

Good luck to you all!

Winners will be announced Friday the 15th February at 3pm.

KitGuru Says: For the dozen or so young creatives that came along, it was a really interesting event. It’s unusual to be able to experience the entire creative workflow – from set up to capture to final output – using the new kit and with experts on hand. Really hope this becomes a regular slot in the calendar.

While MSI traditionally focusses on gaming laptops, the company has also been rolling out more traditional portables intended for the mainstream audience. Today at CES, MSI announced the latest addition to its ‘lifestyle' lineup of laptops- the PS63 Modern.

The PS63 Modern strips things back in favour of a streamlined, portable design. Rather than focussing on gamers, the PS63 targets business users and content creators, you won't even find an RGB keyboard here, instead the keyboard has a standard white backlight, similar to the MacBook Pro and other laptops. One of the crowning features here is battery life, you can use the PS63 for up to 16 hours on a single charge and if you do run out of juice- Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 is in place to get you going again in no time at all.

In terms of spec, you are looking at a 15.6-inch ‘IPS-level' display with 99% sRGB coverage and a 1080p resolution. Under the hood, you will find an Nvidia GTX 1050 Max-Q, ‘up to' an 8th Gen Intel Core i7 CPU and ‘up to' 32GB of DDR4 RAM. Finally, MSI has also switched over to full SSD storage, with this laptop capable of taking one M.2 NVMe/PCIe/SATA SSD and an additional M.2 (SATA) drive.

As you would expect, the I/O options are solid, bringing USB 3.1 Type-C, USB 3.1 Type-A, an SD Card reader, a HDMI port and connections for headphones/microphone. Carrying one of these around should be a breeze, as it is just 15.9mm thick and weighs in at 1.65kg.

Pricing and availability information is still to be determined, but we should hear more on that soon.

KitGuru Says: Content creators is a broad term, but if you are the type of person that needs a laptop to type out lots of documents and maybe edit images every so often, then this laptop should certainly do the trick. Are any of you currently shopping around for a new laptop for work rather than play? What do you think of the MSI PS63?
