Epic Games’ Fortnite helped pave the way for the relatively recent trend in gaming which sees all manner of IPs crossover with various live-service titles. Despite not having characters per-se, Epic has now announced that Lightning McQueen from the Disney Pixar film ‘Cars’ is coming to Rocket League.

Making the announcement on their blog, the team at Psyonix said “Listen, there’s only one Lightning McQueen. But thanks to the newest in Soccar simulation technology, you can have your very own precision instrument of speed and aerodynamics in Rocket League! Equip the Disney and Pixar’s Cars-inspired Lightning McQueen Car, and you’ll be hoisting the Piston Cup in no time.”

Available from today, the Lighting McQueen mega bundle will set you back a pretty penny, costing 2500 credits (around £17). That said, the bundle does include a decent number of items, namely:

  • Lightning McQueen Car (Dominus Hitbox)
  • Rust-eze Decal
  • Dinoco Decal
  • Cruisin' Decal
  • Lightyear Racing Wheels
  • Lightyear Dinoco Wheels
  • Lightyear Whitewall Wheels
  • Ka-chow Goal Explosion
  • Lightning McQueen Player Banner
  • “Life Is A Highway” Player Anthem by Rascal Flatts

Rocket League has had a surprising number of crossovers ever since the game first launched back in 2015, including vehicles inspired by Twisted Metal; Game of Thrones; Back to the Future; Halo and Batman – to name a few.

It’ll be interesting to see whether Epic begins to introduce more collabs such as this to Rocket League in the future, especially with the game set to remove player-to-player trading next month.

One of the more interesting mechanics introduced in Rocket League was the ability for you to trade your acquired items with other players, allowing you to coordinate for specific items, or simply to pawn off any duplicates you’ve gained over the many hours of playing. Unfortunately, this feature is now set to be removed fully later this year in order to “align with Epic’s overall approach to game cosmetics and item shop policies.”

Making the announcement on their blog, the team at Psyonix said “Player-to-Player Trading will be removed from Rocket League on December 5 at 4 p.m. PST. We’re making this change to align with Epic’s overall approach to game cosmetics and item shop policies, where items aren’t tradable, transferrable, or sellable. This opens up future plans for some Rocket League vehicles to come to other Epic games over time, supporting cross-game ownership.”

While pitched as a positive move, this could in essence force players to spend more money on the in-game shop in order to obtain their desired items. The team released an FAQ alongside the announcement detailing how this change will affect Rocket League’s current structure such as with duplicate items, saying:

“What do I do with my duplicate or unwanted items? The Trade-In system for Core Items, Tournament Items, and Blueprints will allow players to continue trading in eligible duplicate or unwanted items to receive a random new item of higher rarity.”

The full FAQ can be found HERE. For those who have been playing Rocket League since launch all the way back in 2015, you might want to get in a few final trades ahead of the 5th of December.

Rocket League surprised many when the rocket car-powered football inspired game managed to not only feel good to control, but was also adaptable enough to cross into other sports. Now, as with MANY other games, Rocket League has gotten a battle royale mode.

Announced last week, Rocket League Knockout Bash is now available to play, with the team at Psyonix saying “In all of Soccar history, the triumphant path has always been paved with cooperation and teamwork. Now, let all alliances be cast aside with the introduction of the free-for-all LTM, Knockout”

From now until the 10th of May, players can engage in a destruction-derby where “only the strong survive as 8 players crash their way through several new Arenas”. Alongside your typical movement abilities, this new mode requires you to master three new moves: Attack, Block and Grab.

As with almost all BR games, players will need to be careful not to fall out of the ever-shrinking safezone as doing so for more than 10 seconds will result in a KO. Additionally, the arena is filled with various hazards which you must avoid while simultaneously pushing your opponents towards them – three KOs and you’re out.

The full list of rules and changes made for this mode is comprehensive and can be found HERE. Though this new mode is time limited, only staying until the 10th of May, the mechanics are seemingly deep enough to stand alone as its own game. It will be interesting to see what the fan consensus is regarding Knockout Bash, and whether it will eventually be extended into its own new permanent mode.

While the Xbox Series X|S previously received next-gen patches for Rocket League which brought the game up to a maximum FPS count of 120, the PS5 – due to the nature of its backwards compatibility – was unable to do so. However, it looks like Sony has been working on its backwards compatibility technology, as owners of Sony’s console will soon be able to play Rocket League at 120fps.

Making the announcement on the PlayStation Blog, Max Parker, the Editorial Manager at Psyonix revealed that “starting on August 18, enjoy Rocket League on the PlayStation 5 at 120hz. A new “Video Quality” setting will be added within the Video Settings menu allowing players to select Quality or Performance modes.”

The Quality mode will run at a native 4K and 60fps, while the game’s new performance mode will instead drop the resolution to 2688×1512 (70% of full 4K) but run at a silky smooth 120fps. Furthermore, While the game itself will run at a lower resolution, the game’s UI and HUD will remain at 4K, ensuring that text remains as sharp as possible.

When Sony first introduced the PlayStation 5’s backwards compatibility, it appeared to be much more gimped when compared to Xbox’s (which could take much greater advantage of the new hardware with ease). It seems Sony has been working on its BC technology, as what was previously only available on native PS5 apps has now been made accessible through simple backwards compatibility. It will be interesting to see how Sony’s BC improves further in the future.

Despite launching over 5 years ago, Rocket League continues to become more and more popular. With Rocket League going free to play recently, it appears the rocket powered soc(car) game is already reaping the rewards of this move, as Rocket League has now, for the first time, surpassed 1 million concurrent players.

Announced by Corey Davis on Twitter, the co-studio head of development at Psyonix announced “Today @RocketLeague passed 1 million concurrent players! Let's go!!!!” sharing an image of an in-game concurrent player count of 1003036 players.

While this figure represents concurrent players across all platforms (thanks to Rocket League’s addition of cross-play support back in 2019), the achievement is nonetheless commendable.

On Steam, only three games have ever surpassed a concurrent player count of 1 million players: PlayerUnknowns BattleGrounds (3,257,248), Counter Strike: Global Offensive (1,308,963), and Dota 2 (1,295,114). Of course, many other titles have surpassed 1 million concurrent players across multiple platforms, but Steam is more open with its platform data than most, making for an easy comparison.

However you slice it, Psyonix’s decision to make Rocket League free-to-play appears to already be paying off. It’ll be interesting to see whether this figure will remain the game’s all-time peak, or whether obtaining 1 million concurrent players is only the beginning of a brand new chapter for Rocket League. Time will tell.

Rocket League recently held its 5 year anniversary, reflecting and celebrating on all of its successes. The rocket powered SocCar game had amassed over 75 million players. Now, the team behind the popular title has announced that Rocket League will be going free-to-play for everyone this Summer.

Taking to the PlayStation Blog to make its announcement, the Editorial manager at Psyonix, Max Parker, announced that “Rocket League will be completely free to download and enjoy later this summer following the game’s biggest update yet. In this update, the menus will be overhauled to make them easier to navigate, and major features will receive key improvements like Tournaments and Challenges. Stay tuned for more information on these feature updates, as there’s a lot to reveal!”

Though until now, Rocket League has been a premium product, all those who previously bought the game will be compensated upon the release of the free-to-play update. Those who own Rocket League already will be granted “Legacy Status” and will receive:

  • All Rocket League-branded DLC packs released before free to play
  • “Est. 20XX” title that displays the first year you played Rocket League
  • 200+ Common items upgraded to “Legacy” quality
  • Golden Cosmos Boost
  • Dieci-Oro Wheels
  • Huntress Player Banner

It is worth noting that though the update is coming to almost all platforms, one will be left out. Steam will not receive the free-to-play update. Instead, to access Rocket League for free, PC users will have to opt in to the Epic Games Store version. That being said, the Steam version will still work, and will continue to receive updates.

Rocket League is one of this generation’s biggest indie success stories, and so it’ll be interesting to see just how much more potential the game has now that it is going free to play.

Rocket League most likely represents one of the greatest indie success stories of the current generation. The rocket-powered competitive “Soccar” game which was released in 2015 has come a long way. As the sports title hits its 5th anniversary, the studio, Psyonix, revealed a number of lifetime stats and figures – including the fact that Rocket League has surpassed 75 million players.

Announced on its blog, Psyonix Team thanked its fans, saying “the five years between Rocket League's launch and today have flown by like they just picked up a corner boost. To say we at Psyonix are thankful for the community's continued support is an understatement. We know Rocket League wouldn't be where it is today without your unparalleled passion for Soccar, and what you've accomplished in-game is simply unbelievable.”

Alongside this, the studio revealed its 2020 infographic, reflecting on the past 5 years of Rocket League. Perhaps the most interesting statistic was the fact that the “Soccar” game has exceeded “75 million players”. What this means exactly is unknown – whether it’s 75 million copies sold, or 75 million registered accounts.

Either way, despite the fact that the game launched on PlayStation Plus giving it an injection of players from the get go, the game’s success is undeniable, and the 75 million figure is a large one in any context. Rocket League reached 50 million players in September 2018.

Other interesting stats include the fact that during the past 5 years over 5 billion matches have been played, with over 29 billion goals being scored – an average of 5.8 goals per game. The team concluded by saying “from all of us at Psyonix, thank you for being a part of this amazing journey. Here's to five more years!”

Rocket League players on macOS and Linux got some bad news last week, as Psyonix is dropping online support for both platforms. The online-removing patch will arrive in March, at which point players will only have access to local multiplayer. At the time, there was little explanation as to why this move had to be made, but the developers have since expanded on its reasoning, attributing the change to a shift away from DirectX 9.

Psyonix said last week that it has become “more difficult to support macOS and Linux” as the studio looks to adapt to newer technologies. Now, thanks to some additional clarification, we know that Rocket League is making the jump from DirectX 9 to DirectX 11 in order to support “new types of content and features” that aren't possible on the older API:

“There are multiple reasons for this change, but the primary one is that there are new types of content and features we'd like to develop, but cannot support on DirectX 9. This means when we fully release DX11 on Windows, we'll no longer support DX9 as it will be incompatible with future content”.

The post then goes on to explain that the macOS and Linux native clients depend on DX9 for OpenGL. In order to keep those native versions working after moving away from DX9, “significant additional time and resources” would be needed to put together a replacement rendering pipeline based on Metal for macOS or Vulkan/OpenGL4 for Linux. Beyond that, additional investment would be required to ensure long-term support for these versions.

Unfortunately, Psyonix says that the number of active players on Linux and macOS make up less than 0.3 percent of the active player base. Due to this, the studio “cannot justify the additional and ongoing investment in developing native clients for those platforms”.

Apparently, Psyonix has worked out a refund arrangement with Valve for macOS/Linux users that are unhappy with the situation. Alternatively, Wine/Steam Proton will allow Linux users to run the Windows version of Rocket League through Steam, while Apple users can use Boot Camp to set up a Windows install and run the game that way.

KitGuru Says: Rocket League was one of the rare games to natively support macOS and Linux, so it is a shame to see those efforts scrapped. Still, I can understand the reasoning behind it from a business perspective, particularly if those versions are becoming a bottleneck.

Rocket League players on macOS and Linux are getting some bad news this week, as Psyonix is dropping online support for both platforms. The online-removing patch will arrive in March, at which point players will only have access to local multiplayer.

According to an update to the Rocket League support site, Psyonix says it has become “more difficult to support macOS and Linux” as the studio looks to adapt to newer technologies. There will be one final patch for Rocket League on Linux and macOS in March, which will remove online matchmaking, private matches, tournaments, the Rocket Pass, the item shop, friends lists, clubs, the ‘news panel', new Steam Workshop maps, leaderboards and a few other online-only features.

Linux and macOS versions of the game will still have access to local matches, split-screen gameplay, the garage/inventory, career stats, replays and any custom maps downloaded before the patch comes out.

There are ways around this though. On Linux, users can try running the Windows version of Rocket League using Steam Proton or Wine. Meanwhile on Apple systems, you can create a Windows partition using Boot Camp and run Windows games from there. These aren't great solutions to native online features, but it should get the job done.

KitGuru Says: I think a bit more explanation is needed here, as while macOS and Linux players will be in the minority, removing features that are currently working is going to raise some eyebrows. Do any of you play Rocket League on a non-Windows system? How do you feel about the upcoming changes?

Psyonix grew into a very successful studio thanks to the release of Rocket League several years ago. In fact, the game is so successful that it might be easy to forget that Psyonix is actually an independent studio. That won't be the case for much longer though, as Epic Games has announced plans to acquire Psyonix.

The announcement was made last night, with Psyonix stating that it will be “joining the Epic Games family”. As part of an FAQ, the studio made it clear that this means that Rocket League will be available on the Epic Games Store later this year, but support for the game on Steam will remain. Psyonix hasn't explicitly said that Rocket League will be removed from purchase on Steam after the game lands on the Epic Games Store, but many seem to believe that this will be the case.

Speaking on the matter, Psyonix explains: “In the short term, nothing will change at all! We’re still committed to providing Rocket League with frequent updates that have new features, new content, and new ways to play the game for as long as you’ll have us. In the long-term, we expect to bring Rocket League to the Epic Games store and to leverage our new relationship to grow the game in ways we couldn’t do on our own before. We believe that bringing Rocket League to new audiences with more support is a win for everybody.”

Gameplay will generally stay the same but thanks to this acquisition, there will be more resources available to invest in Rocket League's competitive esports scene.

While there have been reports claiming that Rocket League will be removed from Steam at the end of this year, Psyonix says that “Rocket League is and remains available on Steam” and that anyone who owns the game on Steam can “still play it and look forward to continued support”. Whether or not ‘continued support' means that it will still be available for purchase remains to be seen. Everyone involved is being quite vague on that front, likely in order to avoid the backlash so many other games have faced after signing up for Epic Games Store exclusivity.

Trying to avoid backlash isn't necessarily working though, as Rocket League is now being ‘review bombed' on the Steam store page, with well over 1,000 negative reviews coming in the last 12 hours.

KitGuru Says: Rocket League has such a huge audience on Steam and at this point, the game has been out for so long that retroactively making it an exclusive seems silly. There is still a chance that the game won't suddenly be unavailable to purchase through Steam, but getting proper confirmation one way or the other is proving to be difficult.

After a three-month delay, Rocket League finally joined the PlayStation Cross-Play Beta program in January, seeing matches comprised of players from any platform. Developer Psyonix asked for a little patience regarding its party and friend systems, which are finally set to arrive on February 19th.

Despite pairing players from PC against PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, Rocket League’s lack of cross-platform party system meant that friends using different platforms could only band together in the Custom game mode. Fortunately, the incoming Friends Update is set to change that later this month, which introduces the Friends List and opens up online matchmaking to cross-platform parties.

Instead of relying solely on platform-specific systems such as the Steam or PSN friends list, Psyonix is set to introduce its new RocketID feature. This combines a user’s name with a randomised four digit number, much like Battle.net or Discord. Players can input this name using the second tab, dubbed RocketID friends, which can be used to invite people on other platforms to join Parties and Clubs.

Psyonix has fleshed the new Friends List out even further, adding a third tab of Recent Players that have appeared in matches outside of the immediate party to view their profile or send a friend request. The last tab is for Notifications that shows these requests, invites and general alerts.

The Friend Update will also make the Dropshot, Hoops, Snow Day, and Rumble ‘Extra’ game modes available in Free Play, allowing players to practice each one for as long as they like. And a Weekly Win notification will appear on the XP screen.

KitGuru Says: The shift to in-game friends lists might be a bit of a hassle given how many times people will need to add one another, but it is the smarter decision for those that want to embrace cross-platform play. Are you excited to play with friends from other platforms?

Rocket League was meant to shortly follow in the footsteps of Fortnite: Battle Royale last October, adopting full cross-platform play. Although developer Psyonix found itself delayed until this year, Rocket League is now a part of the PlayStation Cross-Play Beta program, allowing players across PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC to duke it out in online matches.

Psyonix had cross-platform play planned from the very beginning, allowing PlayStation 4 players to be matched against those on PC since launch. Xbox One joined the fray a year later, but Sony’s stance against competitors prevented cross-play from console to console. Microsoft tore down these barriers when Rocket League debuted on Nintendo Switch, setting a precedent that Sony’s PlayStation 4 would soon be coerced into following.

The new, fully-fledged cross-platform play should be enabled by default as of the new update, but if players wish to check or turn the feature off, they simply need to head into Options, and then Gameplay. If the option is ticked, the player is good to hop into a match against anyone and everyone out there, but when the option isn’t checked the player will be limited to their own platform.

Unfortunately, one major caveat returns. While players can find teammates and competition from anywhere, players from differing platforms cannot currently form a party to search for a match online together. Instead, players are confined to private custom games until the feature arrives within the first major update of the year.

KitGuru Says: It’s good to see another game utilise Sony’s newfound perspective on cross-platform play, particularly as Epic Games wishes to continue bridging this gap moving forward. Are you happy that you’ll soon be able to partner up with friends on PlayStation 4?

Shortly following Sony’s change of heart, Psyonix announced that it was working on making Rocket League fully cross-platform as it was always intended to be. While this was expected to land before the end of the year, the developer has seemingly hit a bump in the road causing a delay until 2019.

Psyonix unveiled the new information with the release of its Fall 2018 Roadmap, detailing what is to be expected before the end of the year. Starting off with the bad news, Psyonix’s RocketID has been pushed back into early 2019. While this gives the developer more time to “ensure that it’s as intuitive, stable, and polished as possible,” the reason was hinted towards Sony still needing to give the go-ahead by stating it’ll prepare RocketID for “ALL platforms should we receive permission to do so!”

Although Sony has allowed full cross-platform play with the PlayStation 4, it’s limited to the ultra-popular Fortnite: Battle Royale for the time being. The firm claims to have “identified a path toward supporting cross-platform features for select third party content,” however it seems as though this content might still have yet to be chosen.

Whatever the reason is, it seems that full cross-platform play is inherently more complicated than Psyonix originally stipulated last year. “We know the wait has been frustrating for many of you who are eager for this feature, and we thank you for your patience as we continue to work on cross-platform support,” concluded Psyonix, drawing attention to new items within its second Rocket Pass and Frosty Fest 2018.

KitGuru Says: This is disappointing for returning players, but as they say, Rome wasn’t built in a day. A feature like this will take some time to implement across the board. At the very least, I’m just thankful that it’s on the table. Are you disappointed about the extra wait for true cross-platform play? What games would you like to see fully embrace cross-platform play?

Following Fortnite’s introduction as the first fully cross-compatible game, developer Psyonix is working with Sony to implement the same level of openness with Rocket League. Despite building the vehicular game to be cross-platform from the start, the studio has cautioned fans that this could take some time given the logistics behind it.

Rocket League has implemented elements of cross-platform play since it launched for PC and PlayStation 4 in 2015. It extended this courtesy to Xbox One players when the title launched early in 2016, however neither console was able to interact with one another. Although the Nintendo Switch version launched a year and a half later, it wasn’t until Patch v144 launched on April 13th, 2018 that PC, Xbox One and Switch players could all hop into the same game, noticeably omitting PS4.

This could soon change, as Psyonix CEO Dave Hagewood excitedly took to Reddit to praise the effort that other developers and fans have made to ask for cross-platform play. “It is with the greatest joy that I can now acknowledge that all the major consoles are making progress towards a truly all-platform cross-platform play experience!”

Although all of the pieces of the puzzle seem to be ready at first glance, Hagewood states that “it takes the substantial cooperation and coordination of many partners, most notably the platform holders themselves” to enact. “There are still many factors, some of which take time, that means we have to have some patience.”

The roadmap for full console cross-platform play hasn’t been released, but we can be sure that Psyonix isn’t the only developer eyeing up the new possibilities made by Sony’s newfound stance on the feature.

KitGuru Says: Alongside Epic Games, Psyonix has always been one of the more vocal studios to support cross-platform play as a feature. Once all is working with Fortnite’s beta, hopefully Sony will speed the process up for other developers. What do you think of Rocket League eventually implementing cross-platform play across all consoles?

Rocket League continues to be one of the most popular games in the world and developer Psyonix really puts that into context for us when it claims that over a billion matches have been played. That shouldn't be too surprising though, as throughout the life of the game more than 25 million have played at least one.

Considering it was born off of the back of mediocre success story, Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket Powered Battle Cars, Rocket League was a bit of a surprise hit. It showed up in mid-2015 as a free PSN title and a purchasable one on the PC and simply took off. Within weeks it had thousands upon thousands of players and the rest is history.

Even now, more than a year and a half on from its release, it still has a regular peak of 50,000+ players on Steam, which is far in excess of even recent big title releases like Civilisation VI, the latest Call of Duty, Dark Souls III and a host of others.

rocketleaguegmaes

Psyonix celebrated this with its lifetime stats infographic, which tells us that more than 25 million players have boosted through a billion matches. What's just as interesting though is the split between ranked and unranked play. While a lot of games might have a daunting competitive game mode, 50 per cent of all Rocket League matches have been ranked.

In comparison, just 11 per cent of games – though that still works out to 110 million – used ‘alternative' rules.

KitGuru Says: I played Rocket League religiously for its first few months of release, but my playtime has fallen well behind my peers now. It gets to a point with every competitive game that you realise the massive time investment required to progress further in the rankings and that's usually when I go back to something single player.

One of the keystones of Rocket League's popularity, has been the developer's willingness to not settle with a single effective game mode, but continued releasing new ones that shake the experience up for all involved. Starting in December users will be able to help with that too, with the introduction of Steam Workshop support.

Rocket League is a game about launching balls around a giant pitch with rocket powered cars, but it also features an ice hockey mode, a basketball inspired hoop game, various strange maps and settings and of course the mutator mode which shakes things up even more. Workshop support could take it to new heights of crazy though, as the community gets in on modding the game.

Of course this isn't the first time mods have been applied to the game, but Steam Workshop support does make it a lot easier for people to apply them. Rocket League developer, Psyonix, pointed out (via VG247) two of its favourites in this announcement, highlighting how players unaware of Rocket League modding will no doubt enjoy playing the new obstacle course and dribbling mods that have been available for some time.

When it does go live in December, Workshop Support will let gamers add or subtract these mods and gameplay options from their install at the click of a button. Accessing them in-game is as easy as heading into the Extras menu and then navigating through the Workshop menu.

Psyonix, the company behind the enormously successful rocket car-based football title, Rocket League, has announced that the game now has 19 million players. While this likely includes a lot of freebie downloaders on the PlayStation platform, it's quite a milestone for what is essentially, an indie title.

Rocket League is the far more popular successful sequel to Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars. It's also far more polished and presented in a more contemporary style, which certainly has helped contribute to its success. However making it free on the PlayStation Network from the get go was also a major component of its success.

As we've seen as the game has continued to grow and retain a pretty active player base, Rocket League is able to do very well from downloadable content and its slew of aesthetic extras. There are plenty to earn without paying up, but there's a number you have to splash out for and that has lead to the developers earning millions from the game.

rocketcars

They likely made a lot from straight sales too if 19 million is an accurate number.

While that does suggest a lot of players have at some point played Rocket League though, it seems pretty unlikely that that's anywhere close to the number of regular players. SteamStats has the game peaking at around 50,000 players today and when matchmaking it often says there are just over 100,000 playing live – so the game is certainly very active, but not 19 million active.

Along with the news of such a big purchase/install base, Psyonix also debuted the news that Collector's Edition cars were now available to buy for a couple of pounds each, without purchasing the special edition of the game.

KitGuru Says: I don't play it as much as I did, but dip my toe back into Rocket League now and again. It's quite amazing how much the general skill level has risen. Except there are still players who don't rush back to cover goal – come on, don't leave me there the whole game.

One of the best aspects of Rocket League – beyond doing sweet, wall-ride aerials – is that it's allowed PlayStation 4 and PC gamers to face off against one another in titanic match ups of console vs PC from the get go. Xbox owners missed out on that phenomenon, but finally, over 10 months since the game's release, that's now changed.

Yes, beginning late last night, Xbox One rocket car pilots and PC gamers can now go head to head or play cooperatively online, further shrinking the divides between the major gaming platforms of the world – in the case of rocket-powered, car football that is.

If you play on the Xbox One, you can try out how you'd fair against the more experience PC players out there by checking the “PC” box in the multiplayer matchmaking menu. Depending on how many people utilise this feature, it could make matchmaking that much faster for everyone.

boom

This is actually the first Xbox One game to support this cross-platform-play feature, which seems crazy considering how much Microsoft has pushed to unify the platforms in one way or another. It could be that control schemes favour PC gamers in some scenarios, but clearly with gamepad-driven Rocket League, that's not the case.

The only downside to this whole thing is that the Xbox One gamers and PS4 players can't go head to head just yet. While PS4 and PC can play and now Xbox One and PC can play, politics is still dividing the console owners amongst themselves.

That may change in the future though, as developer Psyonix has expressed a desire to see full cross-platform play.

KitGuru Says: Here's hoping Microsoft and Sony can agree to make it so everyone can play together. There should be no reason with a game like Rocket League, that PS4, PC and Xbox One gamers can all play on the same team.

It's a sad day for those that were on the threshold of entering a new division, as Psyonix has brought an end to the first ever season of Rocket League. However, we're moving right into season 2 and things are going to work a little differently from now on. On top of that, everyone who competed above Bronze rank in the first season, will have a pretty crown to wear on their car to show off how well they did.

The beginning of Season 2 ushers in a new phase of Rocket League, with the developers shaking up how ranked play works. Moving forward, everyone will compete in 10 placement games for each of the different game modes – 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 etc. – before being ranked based on their skill. It's not entirely clear what skill is based on, but the idea seems to be ranking players based on how well they play, rather than the end result of the game.

This could theoretically reward riskier play like aerials and juggling and mean that if you have a game with a couple of team mates that don't perform well, you won't be as punished for it.

rocketseason2

Along with this update though, the 1.11 patch has also added some new features to the game. A new item rarity system has been introduced, so there will be some cosmetics that are harder to get a hold of than others. Wasteland and Snowday have now been added to the map rotation for private and individual matches, and community wise, players can now select only quick-chat in-games, and can report those that are being asses.

The Rocket Labs experimental playlist has also been added as an optional game mode. There players can try out some very different pitches, including one shaped like a horsehoe, another with two goals per side and my personal favourite so far, the one with ramps and second stories along the sides.

The second season of the car-based football title, Rocket League, is set to commence at some point in February, bringing an end to the first and the traditional ranking system it employed. Instead of basing people's rank within the game on their wins and losses, instead Rocket League Season Two will look at individual skill levels, putting you in one of a number of new categories based on your abilities in-game.

ratings

As it stands, Rocket League has a pretty standard system of ranked progression. If you win games, you earn ranking points and as you gain more, your rank improves, moving through Bronze, Silver, Gold and eventually Platinum rankings. That's going to disappear when Season Two begins, replacing them with Prospect, Challenger and ‘star' groupings. The latter will be made up of Rising Star, All-Star, Superstar and Champion categories.

This means there's 12 divisions with Season Two, rather than 10, which should help keep people of comparable skill levels together, but the groups will be designed around that too. Although Psyonix' update doesn't specify exactly what stats will be used to calculate skill level, presumably in-game points will have some bearing. We're also told that Season 1 skill-data will also be used to help calculate eventual skill level.

But everyone will start from scratch with Season Two. Everyone from the best in the world to those just starting out will be required to play 10 test games to find their correct placement in the skill ratings (thanks PCG).

Rocket League, one of the biggest break out successes of 2015, has been running its first season of ranked play for several months now, with no initial announcement about how long it would be. Well now we know, roughly. Psyonix' first update of 2016 will bring an end to Season one and there will be a few rewards for those that took part.

Although the launch date is stated as coming at some point in February, rather than on a specific date, it is clear that there isn't much time left to raise your rank up if you want to finish strong. That's important too, as there will be special rewards for those that achieved certain ranks.

If you achieved Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum ranks during this first season, you'll receive a fancy looking crown, finished in your respective ranking's metallic colour. It will be based on your highest earned rank however, so don't feel you need to achieve your best in every single category of play.

rocketcrown

While this update will bring an end to Season One though, it will also look to the future, with a big change over how cosmetic items work. Instilling a bit of that gotta' catch'em all mechanic that RPG players can't quite quit, Psyonix will be changing items so that they have a commonality rank. Uncommon, Premium, Limited and other categories will be put in place to make it obvious which items are more unlikely to be used by other players.

There will also be a new “Uncommon” category which will see certain items only unlocked in online games, so no more offline grinding to get all the new gear after a patch.
