We've seen a few big streamers and content creators go on to work directly in games. One of the most popular gaming YouTube channels, Dunkey, set up his own publisher back in 2022, called Big Mode, with plans to shine a light on and bring hidden-gem indie games to market. Now, almost 18 months later, Big Mode's first game has been announced.

Dunkey isn't involved directly in game development. However, Big Mode does offer support, funding, PR & community management, merchandising and help with porting, QA and localisation for projects under its umbrella. Big Mode's first published game has now been announced – Animal Well, a Metroidvania platformer for PC, PS5 and Nintendo Switch.

Animal Well is developed by indie studio, Shared Memory, a company started by a lone developer, Billy Basso, who has been working on this game for seven years already. The game was first announced last year, with a trailer debuting in 2023 as part of the Nintendo Indie World Showcase. A new release date trailer has now been shared via the Big Mode YouTube channel, which you can see further up in this post.

The game will officially release on the 9th of May. Currently, there are no confirmed plans for an Xbox console release.

KitGuru Says: At first glance, Animal Well seems like a very fitting first game for Dunkey's publishing company. Have any of you had your eye on this game since its announcement last year?

Videogamedunkey is one of the biggest and most consistently-enjoyed gaming YouTubers, with videos ranging from serious reviews to humorous gameplay videos among fresh experimental content. After more than 10 years on the platform, Dunkey has announced his direct involvement in game creation, announcing new publishing label BIGMODE.

No games nor any publishing partners have been announced yet, however BIGMODE’s website does offer insight into what potential partner studios – and fans – can expect, saying:

“We believe quality & originality should be supported— Bigmode is a unique & powerful way for great indie games to stand out in a crowded space, and our publishing contracts are designed to be the most developer-friendly possible!”

They continued, “We can get involved at any stage from pitch to near-completion. We can also assist with any standard publishing needs you may have:”

  • Funding
  • Development support
  • PR & community management
  • QA, porting & localisation
  • Merchandising

Publishers can often be greatly removed from game studios synergistically, leading to miscommunication, standardisation, and a general lack of sense of unity amongst game studios. As such, it is exciting to see a personality such as Dunkey enter the publishing space – especially as the biggest players in the industry seem to want to turn the market into an oligopoly. It will be highly interesting to see what comes out of BIGMODE; many good things hopefully.

We've known for a while now that Starbreeze has been searching for a publishing partner to help fund Payday 3. Now, the company has finally found one, with Koch Media set to co-publish the game.

In an announcement today, Starbreeze confirmed that it has signed a €50 million publishing deal with Koch Media specifically for Payday 3. The deal ensures that the game is “fully financed”, but the launch is still at least two years away.

Due to the extra financing, CEO Tobias Sjögren says that the team now has “a strong foundation for a successful launch”. Currently, Payday 3 is targeting a 2023 launch window across PC and consoles.

This is a milestone on the road to recovery for Starbreeze. The publisher was on the brink of financial collapse following the poor launch of Overkill's The Walking Dead a couple of years back. Since then, the publisher has doubled down on Payday 2 and committed to a sequel, which will help bring the company back to profitability.

KitGuru Says: Payday 3 now has the funding it needs, which is great news for fans of the series. There is still a long wait ahead though, with another two years of development ahead at least.

It wasn't that long ago when rumours were buzzing around the possibility of Sony adding Remedy Entertainment to its list of first-party studios. We can now put those rumours to rest, as Remedy has reportedly signed a publishing deal for two new games that will come to next-gen consoles as well as PC.

As reported by VideoGamesChronicle, Remedy is building a “AAA multi-platform game” as well as a “smaller-scale” project set in the same franchise. The publisher that has signed Remedy has not been named yet but apparently that information will be released later today.

This lines up with previous announcements from Remedy, who told investors that it was working on a big unannounced game, which is currently in pre-production. The studio is also working on ‘Project Vanguard', a smaller multiplayer project, which could be the smaller-scale game mentioned in this new publishing agreement.

Aside from all of that, Remedy is also working on two expansions for Control, the first of which arrives this week. In addition, Remedy is involved with Crossfire X on Xbox One, which should also release this year.

KitGuru Says: Remedy appears to have its ducks in a row with a publisher lined up for two upcoming projects. We might not get our hands on these games for another couple of years, but it will be interesting to hear more about this regardless.

THQ, it's in the game. Or at least it once was, but now it's back! Nordic Games, the company that purchased up many of the IPs under the THQ brand when it went defunct in 2012, has now rebranded itself as THQ Nordic, resurrecting the old publishing house, at least in name.

“THQ Nordic represents a core approach of doing much more than ‘owning’ a highly competitive portfolio of IP,” the new THQ Nordic said in a statement. ““We cherish them, and align them with the very best development resources to expand upon them with the level of experience that communities and established fan bases expect and deserve.”

thqnordic

This could perhaps mean we'll see some re-releases, remasters and perhaps even remakes of some of THQ's most well loved classic games. I'd be down for a Summoner remake, but that probably means we'll see Red Faction make a comeback and Darksiders would be a prime choice for a third entry in the series.

As PCGamesN points out, Titan Quest wouldn't be a bad candidate either, since that dungeon crawl style of game is quite popular and it made a decent enough splash when first released.

THQ Nordic went on to say that it currently had 23 games in development, 13 of which have yet to be announced, so expect to hear some big news over the next few weeks.

KitGuru Says: THQ might not have the greatest reputation of late, but it published some of my favourite games ever. Summoner, Wrestlemania 2000, Dawn of War and a number of others. It's cool to see the brand back, even if it is in a new guise.

Vivendi is a company with a lot of fingers in a lot of pies, though most recently it took a step back from the gaming industry when it sold its stake in Activision/Blizzard back to the publishing giant. However it soon set its sight on another large corporation: Ubisoft, and has been aggressively buying up shares in what looks like an attempt at a hostile takeover ever since.

The first buy up of shares it made last year netted Vivendi a six per cent stake in Ubisoft, but that was just the beginning. Since then its spent another $60 million (as per Eurogamer) which means it now owns a full 10 per cent of Ubisoft, including parts of its sister company Gameloft.

While companies like Vivendi regularly buy up shares of interesting firms that might benefit it in the future, Ubisoft is not pleased with this acquisition attempt. It released a statement saying that it considered the aggressive share buying as “unwelcome,” and that it would take steps to “preserve [its] independence.”

vivenditakeover

How do you think the characters would feel?

Vivendi is gunning hard for the French publisher though and in some cases is offering upwards of 50 per cent more per share than the going rate, which will be tempting for current stock holders to take advantage of. Since it now owns 30 per cent of Gameloft too, it  must (by French law) make a takeover bid to achieve a controlling 51 per cent stake in the business.

It may be that Ubisoft appeals to share holders of its main business and Gameloft and requests that they not sell to Vivendi, but stock owners are not always known for their moral stances. If it can't mount a defence though, Ubisoft may soon find Vivendi executives on its board of directors, which will give it further influence within the publisher's ranks.

KitGuru Says: Although Ubisoft is often put up there with the likes of EA as some of the least loved publishers, would you be happy to see a company like Vivendi gain a controlling share?

Bethesda is one of the most universally acclaimed developers around but over the last few years, the company has grown rapidly. Bethesda is now a pretty formidable publisher, with several great studios working under it. Now with the help of studios like Arkane, or  Machine Games, Bethesda would like to build to the point where it can release three to four big titles per year.

Bethesda as a publisher is already approaching that number, with id Software releasing Doom next year followed by Dishonoured 2. We also know that Machine Games is open to more Wolfenstein, following the success of The New Order last year.

2754840-bethesda

Speaking with MCV, Bethesda's Pete Hines spoke about the company's future growth plans: “We are getting to the point where these studios that we have acquired have now put a thing out, figured out how they work together and are starting to hit a bit more consistency”.

“I don’t think it’s necessarily the case that we are doing okay with seven studios, but if it was 14 we could do twice as much. We are pretty aware of who we are and we ultimately want to build to a point where we are doing three or four big titles a year. I would prefer not to be in the same place we were in 2011, where we had four titles and then went super quiet. I want to avoid that. We want to get to the point of regular releases, but we are not thinking: ‘What if we did eight or 10 games a year?’ That’s just not who we are or how we do things.”

KitGuru Says: From the sounds of it, Bethesda wants to keep building off of its current franchises and get to a point where it can have a consistent release line up thanks to the studios under its belt. The company is off to a good start too, with Fallout 4, Doom and Dishonoured 2 coming out in what seems to be the same 12 month period.

There has been a lot of drama surrounding Konami recently. First it appeared that the studio had fallen out with Hideo Kojima, removing his name from all Metal Gear Solid V branding. A few weeks later, the company purged the PT demo from the PlayStation store.

Now Konami has confirmed that it is planning to move away from traditional console and PC gaming in order to focus on mobile games. The publisher is planning to “aggressively” pursue mobile gaming in the near future.

Konami-Logo

Konami executive, Hideki Hayakawa had an interview with Nikkei Tendy Net, which was then translated by NeoGAF, revealing some interesting details: “Following the pay-as-you-play model of games like Power Pro and Winning Eleven with additional content, our games must move from selling things like ‘items' to selling things like ‘features'.”

“Gaming has spread to a number of platforms, but at the end of the day, the platform that is always closest to us, is mobile. Mobile is where the future of gaming lies. With multiplatform games, there's really no point in dividing the market into categories anymore. Mobiles will take on the new role of linking the general public to the gaming world.”

Konami may continue to develop traditional games for consoles and PC but it won't be a primary focus anymore.

KitGuru Says: So Konami seems to have lost faith in multiplatform titles and intends to focus the bulk of its efforts on the mobile market. What do you guys think of all of this? It certainly has been a disappointing time, with the cancellation of Silent Hills and the worry surrounding the future of the Metal Gear franchise.

A couple of weeks after Apple started to offer its iWork productivity web applications for free to everyone, Microsoft Corp. decided to propose an even better deal and provide its Office 365 suite free worldwide, but even to students and teachers.

Starting today, millions of students and teachers around the world are eligible for free Office 365 from their school. All eligible people will need to provide Microsoft a valid school email address to complete the sign up.

The Office 365 package that Microsoft provides to students and teachers includes the latest version of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Access and Publisher installed on up to five PCs or Macs and up to five mobile devices like iPad, Android and Windows tablets, 1TB of storage on OneDrive as well as Office Online for in-browser editing.

Microsoft’s Office productivity suite is one of the company’s major revenue drivers. To promote it and ensure that the current customers will keep using it in the long-term, Microsoft offers it to students free of charge, whereas teachers will use Microsoft Office (and Office file formats) to teach. After people get used to the software, they will eventually pay for it, which is good for the software giant.

To claim your free copy of Office 365, which usually costs starting from about £3.10/$4 a month, you will need to visit office.com/getoffice365 if you are a student, or office.com/teachers, if you are a teacher, and enter your school-provided email address.

KitGuru Says: Microsoft’s idea to make Office 365 completely free for students and teachers is clearly an excellent one from many points of view. Not only the company will provide high-quality productivity apps to people who usually cannot pay for them, but it will also attract millions of new users to its ecosystem.

In what is unlikely to be a surprise for anyone at this point considering the downward turn the publisher has taken in the past year, THQ has filed for bankruptcy. Fortunately though, it already has a buyer that is willing to keep all staff on and continue all current game developments.

The company behind the $60 (£36) million buyout is investment firm, Clearlake Capital Group and it's pledged to secure interim financing for the studio so that game development can continue without interruption. This means that games like Company of Heroes 2 are safe, as well as South Park: Stick of Truth, Metro Last Light and Saints Row: Enter the Dominatrix.

THQ
THQ struggled throughout 2012, with unfinished projects and game delays leading to falling stock prices

“The sale and filing are necessary next steps to complete THQ's transformation and position the company for the future, as we remain confident in our existing pipeline of games, the strength of our studios and THQ's deep bench of talent,” said THQ CEO Brian Farrell.

“We are grateful to our outstanding team of employees, partners and suppliers who have worked with us through this transition. We are pleased to have attracted a strong financial partner for our business, and we hope to complete the sale swiftly to make the process as seamless as possible.”

Despite having a multitude of financial and development problems in the past 12 months, THQ made a quick few million this month with its Humble THQ Bundle, where it offered a slew of back catalogue titles on the pay what you want model.

KitGuru Says: This sort of thing is usually a shame, but it sounds like it could be just what the company needs. No one is getting fired and all games are continuing on track.

THQ has entered into talks with a couple of potential investors, in the hope that it will secure funding to see it through the current tough times with stock pricing and game delays that sees it threatened with liquidation.

However while those discussions are ongoing, it has managed to secure additional temporary funding and a halt on loan repayments from Wells Fargo Capital Finance. This deal will last until 15th January 2013 and will mean that the finance firm will not exercise its rights with regards to the $50 million already loaned to THQ.

“We are pleased to have reached an agreement with Wells Fargo,” THQ boss Brian Farrell said (via Eurogamer). “This agreement enables us to continue focusing on bringing our games in development to market.

“Meanwhile, we are evaluating financial alternatives that will transition the company into its next phase.”

THQ
THQ has been nosediving for some time now

THQ has been in troubled waters for almost a year at this point. The first signs of a problem were with staff layoffs and a gradually dipping stock price. However things turned from bad to worse when it was announced that due to funding complications, the Warhammer 40,000 MMO Dark Millenium, had to be converted to a standard RPG because the money simply wasn't there for a massive online game. There were further issues with THQ failing to put together a game based on an Adidas application and staff firings at many of the publisher's studios followed.

The recent downturn in stock and outlook for the company came from insufficient sales of Darksiders 2 – it required at least 2 million to break even and sold less than 1.5 million – and the announcement that the next Company of Heroes, as well as the upcoming South Park game would be delayed.

KitGuru Says: THQ is circling the drain guys. If you're a fan of the publisher, keep your fingers crossed.
