Overwatch 2 has not had the best trajectory since its launch, with the free-to-play title losing many of its promised features over time. Following the announcement last year that one of the game’s primary selling points – its PvE campaign – was cancelled, its replacement is now reportedly also on the chopping block,

Back in May of last year, Blizzard announced that their long-promised PvE campaign mode for Overwatch 2 would not be coming out. While disappointing, the team attempted to quell concerns by announcing a replacement in the form of PvE Story Missions.

The first set of these missions dropped in August last year and since then we have not gotten any more. According to Kotaku, these missions might also now be on the verge of cancellation, with former Blizzard devs saying to the publication:

“You had designers, programmers, artists, QA, all disciplines, on the team constantly making suggestions and ideas to improve, or trying to do the best we could. But it was all either shot down by a few gatekeepers or just ‘there was no point, there was no time.’”

They continued, “Almost every single team town-hall there were questions about ‘what do we do if it doesn't succeed? I don't feel confident that it will perform well. What are we going to do about players being disappointed?' It was met with either ‘don't worry about it. It'll be fine. We have so much confidence in it. Trust us.’”

The interview lends increasing pessimism to the notion of PvE ever becoming a true and recognised reality for Overwatch 2. Hopefully that isn’t the case.

While Blizzard has been getting some good press recently thanks to the release of Diablo IV, the situation is very different on the Overwatch side of things. When the game was first announced, the justification for the sequel was the planned Hero PvE mode, but that was cancelled earlier this year in favour of a simpler PvE mode. Unfortunately, in order to keep up with new story missions, you will need to pay more.

Blizzard teased its ‘biggest content drop to date' with Overwatch 2: Invasion coming in August. During that season, Blizzard will drop the first few story missions for Overwatch 2. While the initial trailer did not mention a price point, Blizzard revealed the nitty gritty details in a blog post this week, confirming that in order to access these new story missions, players will need to pay for the $15 Invasion bundle.

This bundle will include access to a handful of story missions, as well as some Overwatch coins and a new legendary skin for Sorjourn, as well as permanent access to Sorjourn in all modes of the game for those who have not unlocked them already.

This unfortunately brings back issues many players had with Overwatch 2 at launch. Blizzard essentially took away a paid game that many players loved and replaced it with a ‘free' but heavily monetised version and slapped a ‘2' on it. Skins aren't freely earnable like they were in the original game through the loot box system and the purchase price for skins in the shop is hard to stomach. Many were holding out hope for the big campaign mode, but now we aren't getting that either. These smaller, less frequent story missions might end up being good fun, but at $15 for each drop, it is going to be a tough sell.

On the bright side, unlike the season pass where you miss out on rewards you paid for if you don't play enough, the story missions will be available after purchase and will remain playable to owners once the season is over too.

KitGuru Says: $15 for three missions every couple of seasons will quickly add up. At this point, Overwatch 2 is starting to look like a bit of a money trap.

Back when Blizzard announced Overwatch 2 in 2019, many of us were confused as to why a sequel was necessary. Part of the reasoning on Blizzard's end was to include a PvE campaign, with hero talent trees and a whole new co-op narrative to play through. Now less than a year on from Overwatch 2's launch, plans for the campaign mode have been cancelled.

Overwatch 2 will no longer get the PvE content fans had been promised all those years ago. Blizzard said that development on the PvE experience “hasn't made the progress” they were hoping for, adding that there was “no end in sight” for the development timeline. Ultimately, Blizzard decided that the PvE mode as originally planned was taking too many resources away from the live game and as a result, it has been cancelled.

While the original PvE campaign with customisable hero talents and other extras is no longer coming, Blizzard has said that PvE content will still arrive in Overwatch. A number of missions have already been created and Blizzard plans to release them as singular levels as part of Overwatch 2's regular seasonal content.

The first story missions will be available starting with Season 6, which begins in August. It is unclear if these missions will still be available to play in future seasons, or if they'll be removed and replaced with new missions over time, but the latter seems more likely.

KitGuru Says: The Overwatch hero cinematics and animated shorts were always hugely successful for Blizzard. It is clear that a lot of Overwatch fans do want story content, which makes the cancellation of the campaign very disappointing. Still, we will be getting story missions in some form, we'll just have to wait and see how regularly Blizzard is able to push out that type of content, in addition to continued work on the main PvP modes.

Vela Games, a studio formed by former Blizzard and Riot developers, has now unveiled its first game – Evacore Heroes. While this looks like a MOBA at first glance, the team is doing something a little different here, emphasising co-op play in a PvE setting rather than direct PvP competition.

In Evercore Heroes, players work together to level up their heroes and defend their base from waves of monsters instead of attacking the other teams. The game features a variety of playable heroes with abilities inspired by characters from various established games, which isn't surprising considering some of the lead developers have experience from working for game studios such as Blizzard and Riot Games.

Players eager to try Evercore Heroes can purchase one of three founders packs starting at $20. All packs include an exclusive battle pass, instant hero unlocks, a spare beta key for a friend (three on the Evercore Hero pack), and various skins and cosmetics. The founder's battle pass contains exclusive skins, emotes, voice lines, and in-game currencies that won't expire. Players who buy any pack will get heroes Beko, Fyn, Shade, and Zari when they log into the game.

One of the core principles of Evercore Heroes is to avoid the toxicity that can come with conflicting goals among team members. To that end, Vela Games is looking into ways for matchmaking to recognize players who are still testing out new heroes to match them with others who share a similar mindset.

Work with your team to level up, empower your abilities, and collect Luum, the resource that determines your score. Each map (currently three) has unique objectives and bosses that work like MMO encounters. Evercore Heroes is set to launch as a closed beta on June 20th. All progress from this phase will pass on to the full release planned for later this year. The game will be free-to-play.

KitGuru says: While it remains to be seen if the matchmaking system will work as intended, the game's emphasis on collaborative play and unique objectives make it stand out from the usual PvP-focused games in the genre.

Apex Legends Season 5: Fortune's Favor has been announced, and it will include a story mode for each character. This story mode comes through weekly quests that in spite of mainly being PvE, will also integrate the PvP component of Apex Legends.

Called “The Broken Ghost”, the first season quest introduced to Apex Legends will make players search for nine pieces of a ‘mysterious artifact.' You can collect Treasure Packs on a daily basis (max 1 per day) by playing PvP matches in Apex Legends. By acquiring Treasure Packs, you will get rewards, which include crafting metals, BattlePass XP, Apex packs, or unlock new Hunts. Once you get 5 treasure packs, you will unlock a new Hunt that can be completed to unlock the pieces needed to complete the Quest.

The Hunts are PvE incursions in Kings Canyon during the night. Players will be dropped off in a pre-determined location, face multiple AI-enemies, and retrieve the pieces of the quest, similar to a hit-and-run approach. These Hunts can be done solo or in squads of up to four players. For each Hunt, players will get the respective piece of the artifact, a Weapon Charm, and a new chapter of “The Broken Ghost” story.

By collecting the pieces of the artifact, you will unveil the story of the legends outside of the Apex Games. When the new season starts, on May 12, you will be able to play the Story mode immediately by going to the Quest tab in-game and watching the Prologue. Additionally, Season 5 will bring Loba as a new playable character, and a new altered Kings Canyon.

Apex Legends is available to download for free. You can learn more about this game or download it HERE. You can also learn more about “The Broken Ghost” questline HERE.
