Last year for QuakeCon, we got a ‘Revitalised Edition' of the classic shooter with some new content packed in. This year, one of QuakeCon's surprises appears to be the return of Quake Champions.

TrueAchievements has now been updated with achievement listings for Quake Champions on Xbox. This is the first indication that the game is coming to consoles after years of only being available on PC.

Bethesda hasn't really updated or pushed Quake Champions at all in recent years. The game launched in Early Access on PC back in 2017 and then went free to play a year later. Since then, there has been very little noise around the game.

If Quake Champions is coming to Xbox, then perhaps we'll start to see some new content for the game across console and PC.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: It has been so long since we had any Quake Champions news, so this is quite the surprise. QuakeCon kicks off later today, so we should have official news soon.

Bethesda has been working on Quake Champions for a few years now and the game has already gone under a few major changes. At one point, the idea was to make the game freely accessible to all, while also selling a ‘champion pack' that gave access to all in-game characters. Then, the game moved over to a loot box monetisation model to keep revenue coming in. Now, trends are being chased once again, with Quake Champions ditching loot boxes and switching over to a Fortnite-style seasonal Battle Pass.

In December, Quake Champions will have a complete economy overhaul, this will introduce new ways for players to level up and new rewards. RNG won't be a factor in rewards anymore, instead, players will continue to earn in-game currency by completing daily/weekly challenges, levelling up etc. That currency can then be used to buy different skins, instead of playing games of chance with loot boxes.

In addition to this new system, Quake Champions will receive a battle pass, which was first popularised by Fortnite and then added to PUBG too. In Quake Champions, the pass will allow you to unlock more rewards over the course of a three-month season. If you buy the battle pass late into the season, you'll retroactively unlock all of the rewards that you would have gotten if you made the purchase on day one.

An exact date for this change has yet to be announced but it will be rolling out at some point this month.

KitGuru Says: I played quite a bit of Quake Champions while it was still in early access, although I'm not sure how active the player base is nowadays. Do any of you play Quake Champions at all? What do you think of the upcoming changes?

Bethesda has been working on bringing back the Quake franchise for quite some time, working closely with id Software to give it the revival it deserves. The next instalment is to be Quake Champions, that will now be set to jump from closed beta into Steam Early Access come August 22nd.

Quake Champions experienced its first open beta back in May, ending on the 21st of the month. According to Bethesda, its jump onto Steam Early Access will see the game expanding in scope, introducing more maps, features and even characters from other series.

“The Early Access version of Quake Champions is, obviously, a work-in-progress, but represents a solid and robust version of the game, with four modes, 11 Champions, a variety of maps, and a thriving community of fans. Early Access will allow us to work closely with players to improve the game and add additional features before the official launch of Quake Champions in the coming months,” explains id Software’s Studio Director, Time Willits.

Early Access will bring with it the new Church of Azathoth and Tempest Shrine maps, a Lore System that enables players to unlock “high-end lore Lore Skins,” in game voice chat and a whole host of new features.

Upon full release, Quake Champions will be free to play with the ability to buy characters outright, and while those who took part in the closed beta will have access to a “free-to-play mode”, others wanting in on its Early Access will have to purchase The Champions Pack. This pack will cost $29.99 until launch, when the pack will cost $40 and will include all 11 released characters, the expected 6 yet to arrive, an exclusive diehard Ranger skin and three Reliquaries that act similar to traditional loot chests.

Early Access also bring a new Champion with it, prompting the Doom Slayer to take a break from battling demons and come straight from hell as a playable character. His active ability is Beserk, which enables him to make his enemies into pulp while his passive ability uses his thrusters to double jump.

KitGuru Says: Quake III: Arena was what introduced me to LAN parties so the franchise will always have a place in my heart. I am quite interested to see where Bethesda and id Software take this new game. Are you looking to get Quake Champions?

It has been almost a year since we got our first look at Quake Champions but all of id Software's work appears to be coming to a head as the game is now ready for the public to get its hands on. There have been a few rounds of closed beta so far this year but today, Quake Champions is getting a ten day open beta.

This is being dubbed as a ‘large scale tech test', with the main goal being to cram as many players onto the servers as possible between today and the 21st of May.

If you want to give Quake Champions a whirl over the next week and a half, you will still need to sign up. You can head over to the Quake Champions website and once you have registered, a beta key will be sent to you instantly. You won't need to sit around waiting to hear whether or not you've been accepted into the beta, Bethesda is opening the flood gates on this one.

Presumably, with the open beta now here, we should be nearing the game's final release. Quake Champions is going to be a free to play ‘hero shooter', with different class-based characters each with their own unique strengths and weaknesses. It's similar to Overwatch, though it will operate under a different business model.

The game does not have a final release date yet. However, E3 is in one month, so we should hear more then.

KitGuru Says: I'm a big fan of ‘shadow drops' so I am hoping that Bethesda launches Quake Champions during its press conference at E3 this year. Are any of you planning on trying out Quake Champions over the weekend? Have any of you tried it already?

Since announcing Quake Champions at E3 last year, id Software has been working away on getting the game ready for the eyes of the public. We've had a couple of rounds of closed beta tests up to this point and now, a ‘large scale' open beta is coming at the end of this week.

Bethesda shared news of the “large scale tech test” today and teased that it will give everyone the opportunity to test their skills against more players than ever before. The test runs from the 12th of May until the 21st.

You do still have to sign up for beta access via the Quake Champions website. However, unlike with the closed beta, you will get an access code right away, so you won't have ti sit around wondering whether or not you got in. On the 12th of May, Bethesda's NDA also drops, meaning those who have taken part in the closed beta can offer up their first impressions.

Aside from all of that, the open beta also brings along a new game mode, known as ‘Sacrifice Mode', which pairs up players in teams of four to battle it out in the arena.

KitGuru Says: I've been looking forward to Quake Champions myself. It will certainly be interesting to see what the wider community thinks of the game once the beta opens up and since we're at the open beta stage, the final release likely isn't far off.

If you happen to be a Warhammer 40K fan, then you are probably looking forward to the release of Dawn of War III later this week. As with any huge game launch, this also means GPU driver updates. We've already had a chance to look at Nvidia's latest ‘Game Ready' update and today, AMD began pushing out its latest Crimson ReLive driver, promising performance boosts and improved HDR while stealth-dropping a Quake Champions link on your desktop.

Here are the improvements the new version of Radeon Software offers:

Up to 7% performance improvement measured on Radeon RX 580 8GB graphics when compared to Radeon Software Crimson ReLive edition 17.4.3.
Improve Multi-GPU stuttering in Battlefield 1 with a 4K Display.
Removes corruption caused by HDMI scaling on some displays.
HDR colours should be improved within Mass Effect: Andromeda.

Now driver 17.4.4 will also add a tracked bit.ly shortcut link to your desktop for Quake Champions, Bethesda/id Software's upcoming hero shooter. The link takes you to the beta sign up page for the game. Advertisements within drivers aren't particularly uncommon and have appeared in the past, though it is rare to find beta sign-up links on your desktop after installing a driver update.

If you were wondering why there is a Quake Champions shortcut suddenly sitting on your desktop, then that would be why. There appears to be some cross-promotion between AMD and Bethesda at the moment, which will also extend to performance enhancements for Ryzen CPU users in future games, likely including Quake Champions.

KitGuru Says: I'm not too bothered by the Quake Champions link myself, especially since it only takes me a second to drag it into the recycling bin. Still, some may see it as an intrusive step, while others might just be confused as to how Quake Champions appeared on their PC.

If any of you are planning on trying out Quake Champions this weekend during its closed beta phase, then it may be worth double checking that your drivers are up to date as this week, Nvidia released an all-new Game Ready driver in preparation for id Software's new fast-paced competitive shooter.

The latest driver version 381.65 includes optimisations for Quake Champions and also adds support for the Windows 10 Creators Update, which starts rolling out next Tuesday.

Aside from those two headline additions to this driver version, Nvidia has also included support for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmost tech. Some small changes have also been made to the Nvidia control panel, with an option to override Windows 10's colour settings.

This release also drops straight after Nvidia's new Titan Xp announcement. The company's latest and greatest is a small upgrade over the Titan X (Pascal) from last year, unlocking all of the CUDA Cores available on GP-102, while also adding faster 11Gbps memory with 550 GB/s memory bandwidth.

KitGuru Says: I'll be checking out the Quake Champions beta over this weekend. Ever since DOOM (2016)'s multiplayer community started dying down I've been needing a new fast-paced shooter in my life. Are any of you planning on trying Quake Champions this weekend?

It looks like Bethesda has its eyes on the esports scene as it turns out that the publisher is hoping Quake Champions will go on to become the next big esport. The free to play hero shooter will be launching later this year, with some modes designed around the idea of holding tournaments.

In an interview with Russian outlet ‘GoodGame‘, id software's creative director, Tim Willits explained that right now, Bethesda is “committed to have a large esports presence” and while no specific partnerships can be announced at this time, the company is talking to “all of the big esports companies”. Willits also hinted at talks going on between Bethesda and ESL, so perhaps Quake Champions will show up there at some point.

Obviously, there is more to making an esport than just creating a competitive game. A lot of thought has been going into designing ‘esports friendly' game modes, with spectating features that would help make matches easier to follow and more engaging to watch.

One of the modes we can expect to see is a 1V1 duel mode, which “a lot of pro players” believe is missing from the esports scene. There will also be a game mod called ‘Sacrifice', which has been designed around feedback from professional players within the esports scene. We will likely see these game modes at the first Quake Champions tournament at Quake Con later this year. We may also get a look when the closed beta drops in a few weeks time.

KitGuru Says: A lot of games attempt to break into the esports scene these days but very few are successful. Microsoft wanted Halo 5 to be an esport, Ubisoft wanted the same for Rainbow Six Siege. That said, perhaps Quake Champions will be one of the few games to break through and really make its mark.

Back at E3 2016, Bethesda took to the stage to announce Quake Champions, a new take on the classic arena shooter with the addition of hero characters, each with their own unique abilities. At the time, we didn't know whether or not this would be a free to play or fully paid title but since then, id Software and Bethesda have looked over the options and come up with a solution- Quake Champions will be free at its core, but with the option to buy the game outright.

Speaking with Polygon this week, id Software Creative Director, Tim Willits, said that “at its core, it's a free to play game” but noted that the company didn't want to turn away those who would rather just own all of the available characters outright.

The Ranger, who you may remember as the lead character from the original Quake, will be free for everyone. From there, you will be able to earn in-game currency known as ‘favour', which will allow you to buy access to other characters for limited amounts of time. This way, you can try out new heroes without spending any real money on the game.

However, if you would rather just have access to all of the characters at once without worrying about time constraints, then you will be able to pick up the ‘Champions Pack', which will include full access to all characters that the game launches with. This does leave the door open for DLC characters in the future, which you would need to pay extra for.

Right now, we don't have exact prices for things like the Champions Pack, nor do we know how much in-game currency you can earn through regular play to unlock other champions for free. However, Quake Champions will be getting a closed beta in a few weeks time, so perhaps we will learn a bit more then.

KitGuru Says: Quake Champions is turning out to be a fun looking shooter but Bethesda is going to need to ensure its business model is balanced correctly to keep everyone on equal footing, whether they fork out for the Champions Pack or not. How do you guys feel about Quake Champions' proposed business model? It sounds good on paper but until we know pricing it can be difficult to judge.

Microsoft and Sony spent much of this latest generation of consoles trying to convince us that it was a good thing that they could only put out 30 frames per second in most games, but that's not something id software agrees with for Quake Champions. It wants to push such high-speed play, a 120Hz monitor might be required to give yourself a competitive edge.

The reason id is going so hard with the speed of play in Quake Champions, is because it wants to develop a thriving professional scene with the shooter and that means catering to the highest levels of play. Although many gamers may not be able to spot much of a difference between 60 FPS and 120 FPS, the pros can and you'll need hardware that supports a high refresh rate if you want to take advantage of it.

“It's everything from input sampling of the mouse to making sure that your monitor refresh rate is fast enough,” said id creative director, Tim Willits in a chat with GameSpot. “Because even with Quake Live, we have found throughout the years that going from 30 to 60 is huge, but even 60 to 120–is noticeable.”

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sa-6fQyNkZo']

MOBA players have also been credited with playing at lower-game-detail settings in order to coax out a few more frames per second to give them a better look at what's really going on in the game and in the fast paced world of competitive shooters, that is equally important.

Because of that, Quake Champions is going to be a PC exclusive, because the consoles simply cannot put out the frame rates that are required for 120Hz play. While Willits did say that the game would play on a variety of PCs and not everyone would need to have high-end graphics cards and monitors to be able to hit those sorts of frame rates, the option will be there for those able and willing to take advantage of it.
