Each month, those who are subscribed to Amazon Prime are privy to a number of free games as part of the company’s Prime Gaming initiative. For the month of August, subscribers can get their hands on a number of titles, including PAYDAY 2, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 and more.

Available to add to your library throughout the month, August’s line-up of free titles is as follows:

  • PAYDAY 2 + The Gage Mod Courier DLC (EGS) – August 3
  • Farming Simulator 19 (EGS) – August 10
  • Blade Assault – August 10
  • Quake 4 (GOG) – August 10
  • Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 – August 17
  • Foretales – August 17
  • Driftland: The Magic Revival – August 17
  • In Sound Mind – August 24
  • Summertime Madness (Legacy Games key) – August 31

Historically, Prime Gaming’s free titles were all made available at the same time during the early days of each month. This was changed back in February however, with subscribers needing to come back time and time again to claim their ‘free’ games as they become available..

As with each month, you can also get your hands on dozens of in-game items across a bunch of titles including World of Warcraft; League of Legends; Honkai Star Rail; Diablo IV; Roblox; Overwatch 2; and Call of Duty Warzone – to name just some.

QuakeCon officially kicked off yesterday evening and to celebrate the occasion, we got another big Bethesda drop for Xbox Game Pass. As of yesterday, Game Pass for PC now has five more classic titles, including Quake 4 and some of the original Elder Scrolls games.

In an update for QuakeCon, Bethesda is bringing five more of its classic games to Xbox Game Pass for PC. The line-up includes The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard, An Elder Scrolls Legend: Battlespire, Wolfenstein 3D, Quake 4 and Quake Champions.

You can also currently claim The Elder Scrolls: Arena and The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall for free through the Microsoft store. Elsewhere, you can also find Doom 64 for free on the Epic Games Store.

Bethesda has been bringing big chunks of its catalogue over to Xbox Game Pass ever since Microsoft completed its acquisition of the company in 2021. Many modern titles like Dishonoured 1 & 2, Fallout 4 and Fallout 76, Skyrim and more. Next year, brand new titles like Starfield and Redfall will be coming to Game Pass on day-one.

Last year for QuakeCon, we got a ‘Revitalised Edition' of the classic shooter with some new content packed in. This year, one of QuakeCon's surprises appears to be the return of Quake Champions.

TrueAchievements has now been updated with achievement listings for Quake Champions on Xbox. This is the first indication that the game is coming to consoles after years of only being available on PC.

Bethesda hasn't really updated or pushed Quake Champions at all in recent years. The game launched in Early Access on PC back in 2017 and then went free to play a year later. Since then, there has been very little noise around the game.

If Quake Champions is coming to Xbox, then perhaps we'll start to see some new content for the game across console and PC.

At this point, id Software has a huge library of titles and even some re-releases with various additions to certain classic titles. With that in mind, id's digital library can be somewhat confusing. To get around this, the developer is consolidating its titles and delisting certain store pages, although the games themselves will remain downloadable and accessible.

“Spanning across multiple decades, id Software’s library of work is as vast as it is full of amazing games”, the company writes in a blog post. “However, this means a number of the id’s offerings have been released or reiterated in ways that can make our digital storefronts a touch confusing. Rather than write out the differences between Final DOOM, Ultimate DOOM and just DOOM, we’re consolidating our Steam library of titles! For those id Software experts that do know all the variations of our games released on Steam, bear with us as we simplify how our games appear so that newcomers have an easier time.”

As part of this effort, Ultimate DOOM will now be known as DOOM (1993) on Steam, and Master Levels for DOOM II, Final DOOM and DOOM II (Enhanced) will all be rolled into the DOOM II install package. Similar moves are happening with DOOM 3 and the Quake games.

When all is said and done, the following titles will be delisted:

  • Quake II Demo
  • Quake III Arena Demo
  • Quake III Team Arena Demo
  • Quake III Team Arena (This will be included with Quake III Arena)
  • Final DOOM (This will install with DOOM II)
  • Master Levels for DOOM II (This will install with DOOM II)
  • Quake II Mission Pack: The Reckoning (This will be added to the Quake II launcher.)
  • Quake II Mission Pack: Ground Zero (This will be added to the Quake II launcher.)
  • DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil (This will install with DOOM 3.)
  • DOOM 3: BFG Edition (This will install with DOOM 3. Players that own DOOM 3: BFG will be upgraded to DOOM 3.)
  • DOOM Classic Complete Bundle (This is being replaced by the DOOM Classic Bundle.)

All this really means is that each title won't have a separate page on the Steam Store. You'll still be able to access all of this content through the main games. So for instance, you can still play Final DOOM, but now it installs alongside DOOM II.

KitGuru Says: I'm not entirely sure this is necessary, as now anyone who misses this announcement and goes to look for these games on Steam is going to be confused. Still, it will make id's Steam library easier to scroll through.

Last year due to the pandemic, a lot of events were cancelled, while others shifted to a digital-only format. While some events will be returning to normal this year, a lot of gaming events will stay digital this year, including QuakeCon, which returns for 2022.

In an announcement posted this week, it was confirmed that QuakeCon will remain digital this year, the same format used for 2021. As ususal, the event will be taking place in August, from the 18th to the 20th.

The QuakeCon team was initially looking to return to hosting a physical event in Dallas, Texas this year. However, there was “too much uncertainty” to commit to an in-person event. In 2023, things should go back to normal, with plans to hold a physical event once again.

More details about this year's QuakeCon will be revealed in June. Unlike E3 and Gamescom, QuakeCon is traditionally a fan-focused event, less focused on game announcements and more focused on tournaments, giveaways and more. That's not to say we won't get any announcements here, as there have been rumours of a new Quake game entering development, and id Software has already confirmed it has plans for more DOOM.

KitGuru Says: As for what we may see at QuakeCon this year – that’s very up in the air. We do know that id Software is working on games, but whether or not they are ready to be announced and shown is uncertain. Everything else Bethesda related is more likely to appear in an Xbox showcase, or at one of the other major gaming events, like The Game Awards, E3 or Gamescom.

While we've heard that id Software does have plenty of ideas for future DOOM games, the studio has said little about Quake in recent years. We did get a small remaster of Quake last year with some new maps created by Machine Games, and now, it looks like id Software might be gearing up to develop a brand new Quake.

There was an attempt to revive Quake several years ago with Quake Champions, but the free to play title did not take off. According to Zenimax job listings though, it sounds like a future Quake game is on the table.

New job listings on the Zenimax website note that hired developers will work on “iconic id Software properties like DOOM and Quake”.

The team at id Software has not said anything publicly about the future of Quake, but the studio continues to host QuakeCon each year, so perhaps we'll get a teaser at the next event.

Over the last five years, id Software has been exclusively focussing on DOOM, bringing us the 2016 reboot and more recently, Doom Eternal. Now, it looks like the studio might be switching things up a bit, possibly with a new Quake game.

the last Quake title to be released was Quake Champions in 2017, which did not revitalise Quake multiplayer in the way Bethesda had hoped it would. There were signs that the series might be getting ready for a comeback over the Summer, with Quake: Revitalised Edition launching at QuakeCon, offering a small remaster of the original game with some additional levels developed by Wolfenstein studio, Machine Games.

Now, the Zenimax website has begun listing a bunch of new job listings for id Software, calling for multiple positions to work on “the development of a long-running iconic action FPS”, the job listings also mention sci-fi and fantasy elements. These descriptors could equally apply to both DOOM and Quake, so this could be referring to another DOOM game. It is worth noting that id Software has expressed interest in doing a sequel to DOOM Eternal already.

With that said, there has also been a lot of noise around Quake recently. Perhaps id Software is looking to repeat the magic of DOOM (2016) with a modernised, next-gen version of Quake complete with a campaign and multiplayer.

Just as anticipated, last night during the opening panel of QuakeCon, Bethesda announced and released Quake, now in remastered form with enhanced graphics, all previous expansions and even some new content developed by Machine Games.

This is still classic Quake, so while the game has been updated for modern platforms and includes enhanced models, dynamic lighting, better anti-aliasing and other modern graphical effects like Depth of Field, it is not a full blown remake. Still, it is a great way to experience the classic shooter, which supports local or online co-op with up to four players through the original single-player campaign, expansions and the two new add-ons developed by Machine Games, adding a few more levels into the mix.

The Quake remaster is already out on PC, Xbox, PlayStation and the Nintendo Switch for $9.99. However, on the PC and Xbox side, Xbox Game Pass subscribers can jump right in without buying the game outright.

In addition to Quake (2021), Xbox Game Pass has also been updated with Quake II and Quake III Arena, although both titles are PC-only for the time being.

Last week, Bethesda announced the full schedule for QuakeCon and immediately, rumours of a Quake ‘Revitalised Edition' began to circulate. Now, a remaster seems to be completely confirmed, as the game has been rated by the ESRB.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary for Quake, Wolfenstein studio, Machine Games, has been working on a Quake remaster. The game is due to be officially announced as part of a Quake panel hosted by id Software and Machine Games during QuakeCon later today.

We’ve been expecting at least one surprise game announcement during Quakecon, in large part due to id Software obtaining ratings for a mysterious ‘Project 2021A’ and ‘Project 2021B’ in Australia.

Now, as reported by VentureBeat, the ESRB has listed a new rating for Quake this morning, issuing it an M rating in the US for “blood and gore” as well as “violence”. This listing confirms that we'll be getting this Quake re-release very soon, possibly even immediately after the panel at QuakeCon.

Earlier this week, Bethesda announced the full schedule for QuakeCon, which is set to take place next week. As expected, there is a segment on Quake for the series' 25th anniversary, but it seems that Bethesda may have a big surprise up its sleeve in the form of a remake.

The Quake stream will be hosted by id Software and interestingly, Machine Games. In an early, now removed version of the schedule, the words “Quake is back” can be found on this part of the schedule, as well as the promise of a “revitalised edition” (via Xboxera), indicating that we'll be getting a revamped version of the original Quake with additional content.

We've been expecting at least one surprise game announcement during Quakecon, in large part due to id Software obtaining ratings for a mysterious ‘Project 2021A' and ‘Project 2021B' in Australia.

Machine Games has been working on the Wolfenstein series for the last few years and more recently, the studio was confirmed to be working on an Indiana Jones game. From the sounds of it, Machine Games will be releasing one more title before going all in on its Indiana Jones project.

After taking a break in 2020, QuakeCon is back this year, with the Bethesda event set to take place on the 19th of August. The event organisers have now released the convention’s full schedule, giving fans a hint about Bethesda’s future output.

Taking place between the 19th and the 21st of August, QuakeCon’s three-day event will kick-off with “a brief Welcome at 2 p.m. ET on August 19, followed immediately by six signature panels with the developers behind the games you're currently playing – and the ones you can't wait to play. Along with insights into these games, each of these signature panels will reveal new info, updates and announcements, so be sure to tune in to them all.”

Fans can expect to see some of Bethesda’s biggest games make an appearance, including the Upcoming Deathloop, Fallout 76, The Elder Scrolls Online, DOOM, and of course, Quake. When it comes to Quake itself, it seems as though the team is looking to return the franchise to its former glory, with a ‘revitalized edition’ of the series set to be announced at the event.

With Microsoft now owning the entirety of Bethesda, it will be interesting to see how the approach to QuakeCon changes, and what announcements can be expected – aside from what has already been teased.

Id Software appears to be up to something. This year, the studio has submitted two projects to the Australian Classification Board, one known as Project 2021A and another known as Project 2021B, with neither appearing to be tied to Doom.

Id Software's Project 2021A was discovered earlier this year and as PCGamer points out, it has been classified as 18+ for “high impact violence” and is listed as a virtual reality game, an area that the studio has explored in the past with DOOM VFR.

The next listing, known as Project 2021B, is rated M for violence and online interactivity. This particular game is set to be a multiplatform title, developed by id Software and published by ZeniMax Europe.

Neither game has been officially announced and with just six months left in the year, we're not sure if either project will be announced or release in 2021. One of the theories gaining traction is that this could have something to do with Quake, as the 25th anniversary of Quake 2 is coming up next year.

Quake live has received a few divisive changes recently alongside the game's launch on Steam and it looks like they are here to stay as id Software is attempting to bring the game to a wider audience by making it “closer to a modern shooter”.

New changes to the game include giving the player one primary weapon of their choice, while also granting more freedom as to what secondary weapon you spawn with. According to id Software's forum post on the matter, this “allows players to try out various weapons and become more effective on spawn which has been the key complaint of newcomers.”

Quake-Live-on-Steam-Wasn-t-a-Priority-for-Zenimax-John-Carmack-Says-408216-2

In an effort to make the game more accessible to new comers, the game also has an ‘auto hop' mechanic, allowing players to hold down forward and the space bar in order to build up speed, rather than having to learn how to bunny hop from scratch:

“Because the new bunnyjumping only provides a limited amount of accel gain, and is only effective on straightaways, players will still need to learn strafe jumping over time. We hope that this new mechanic will allow both general movement and gameplay to become more accessible encouraging them to continue to play so that they may over time become more accustom to the finer side of Quake.”

Some veteran players are upset about these changes but id Software said that these gameplay changes are necessary in order to bring Quake “one step closer to being a modern shooter, while still holding true to our roots of remaining an incredibly fast paced old school shooter”.

KitGuru Says: The changes don't sound all that bad to me but then again, I've not been playing Quake for years on end. Are any of you guys veteran Quake players? What do you think of the changes?
