Last week ended with a major new PC release in Spider-Man Remastered. Originally a PlayStation exclusive, Spider-Man has now arrived on PC, complete with all of the features you expect from a PC game. Nvidia released a set of day-one drivers for the game, and AMD also rolled out a new optimised driver.

On Friday, AMD released AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 22.8.1. This new driver allows you to enable Radeon Boost in Halo Infinite, which combines dynamic resolution with variable rate shading to enhance performance while minimising impact on image quality.

This driver also adds optimisations for Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered, as well as Thymesia, both of which came to PC last week. The new update also fixes a few lingering issues, including freezes and crashes in titles like Project Zomboid and Stormworks: Build and Rescue. Flickering issues with Mixed Reality headsets with the RX 6800XT should also be fixed.

AMD has several new features in store for Radeon graphics users with its latest driver update. Today, Radeon Software Adrenalin 21.9.1 launches, bringing auto-overclocking, Windows 11 support, Smart Access Memory on RX 5000 GPUs and the reveal of even more games using FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR).

The first major feature addition with this driver is Auto Overclocking for AMD-powered desktop PCs. Now, those with an RX 6000 series graphics card and a Ryzen 5000 series processor can switch auto-overclocking on to boost both the CPU and GPU without additional tinkering. This is also the first Radeon Software version to include support for all features on Windows 11. Microsoft's latest OS officially launches in October and will be a free upgrade to all Windows 10 owners.

The other highlight for this new driver is expanded Smart Access Memory (SAM) support. Previously, SAM worked with Ryzen 5000 or Ryzen 3000 series CPUs and RX 6000 series graphics cards, but now, it works with RX 5000 series GPUs as well. All of that brings us to the latest updates on FSR, AMD's DLSS alternative for resolution upscaling.

So far this year, FSR has been implemented in 27 titles, including the likes of Marvel's Avengers, Dota 2, Elite Dangerous: Odyssey, Myst and Resident Evil Village. This week, Bethesda and Arkane's latest title, Deathloop, will also launch with FSR and the feature will also be coming to World War Z: Aftermath, JX3, F1 2021 and No Man's Sky in the coming weeks.

Last week, when AMD released the Radeon Software Adrenalin 21.4.1, the patch notes included a slew of upgrades, features, and optimisations, but as it turns out, there was another sneaky improvement that we weren't told about. Reportedly, the new driver also improves GPU power consumption, reducing it by as much as 72% in non-gaming workloads.

The team at TechPowerUp tested the whole Radeon RX 6000 series GPU line-up, which consists of the Radeon RX 6700 XT, the RX 6800, the RX 6800 XT, and the RX 6900 XT. They've run tests running both the 21.3.2 driver and the 21.4.1 driver in various scenarios, including when the GPU is idle, in a multi-monitor setup, and during media playback.

While idling, the RX 6800, RX 6800 XT and RX 6900 XT graphics cards saw power consumption reduced by up to 72 percent. In multi-monitor setups, there is also a slight difference, although it could be within the margin of error. As for media playback, these three GPUs had power consumption reduced by up to 20W. Interestingly, these power consumption improvements already seemed to be in place for the RX 6700 XT, which didn't change much between the two driver versions.

It's unclear why AMD didn't announce these improvements with the patch notes. Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru says: While it is odd that we didn't hear about this when the new driver was announced, these are still welcome optimisations. Do you own an RX 6000 series graphics card? Have you noticed any differences in power consumption since updating to the latest driver?

Nvidia began rolling out its GeForce driver update for Red Dead Redemption 2’s launch this week and AMD has its own prepared too. The latest version of the Radeon Software driver adds day-one optimisations for Rockstar’s cowboy adventure, while also fixing some issues with The Outer Worlds, OBS encoding, Vulkan titles and more.

AMD didn’t offer up any performance details for Red Dead Redemption 2 running on Radeon hardware, but the new Radeon Software 19.11.1 release should get you the best day-one performance possible. Most of the meat in this update is found in the fixed issues list, which addresses a number of problems.

With this new driver, The Outer Worlds should now correctly render characters in the inventory screen and crashes should no longer be an issue when switching between different character inventories. For games that utilise the Vulkan API, an issue causing a 60 frames per second cap should now be resolved.

For content creators, this new driver update should fix an issue stopping users from connecting their Twitch account through the Radeon Settings menu for live-streaming. Finally, this driver should also fix up heavy frame drops while using OBS streaming with AMF encoding.

There are still some known issues present in the latest driver, some of which were present in the previous driver update for The Outer Worlds. This includes the Performance Metrics Overlay causing stutter or screen flashing on some applications, system instability with HDR and Radeon ReLive both active at once and stutter with FreeSync on 240Hz displays paired with an RX 5700 GPU. Hopefully those remaining issues will be ironed out by the time the next update rolls around.

You can get the new Radeon Software 19.1.1 update and view the update notes, HERE.

Earlier this week, Nvidia began rolling out a new GeForce driver with optimisations for this weekend's big game releases- The Outer Worlds and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Now, those equipped with a Radeon GPU also have a day-one driver available to install, which should grant some notable performance boosts.

Radeon Software Adrenalin 2019 Edition 19.10.2 is now available. RX 5700 XT owners in particular will benefit from this one, with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare getting an 18% performance boost compared to driver version 19.10.1 while running at ultra settings. For The Outer Worlds, RX 5700 XT owners can expect an 8% performance gain with the new driver compared to the previous one.

This driver also has optimisations in place for Chernobylite, an early access single-player game with sci-fi and survival horror themes.

As usual, the driver release notes come with a list of fixed issues. Those experiencing a blank screen bug when launching League of Legends should no longer have this problem. Radeon Chill no longer creates an incorrect registry entry when enabled or disabled, Borderlands 3 should also no longer freeze up when changing resolutions or after running the in-game benchmark.

Flicker while watching media files through the Windows Movies & TV application on a USB Type-C display should be fixed. Finally, Radeon RX Vega and RX 5700 series GPUs should no longer experience a thread stuck crash or TDR during high GPU load.

Some issues do remain though, including character models not always rendering correctly in the inventory screen on The Outer Worlds. RX 5700 GPU users may experience stutter while playing a game at 1080p with low settings. AMD's performance metrics overlay can cause stutter or screen flashes when used in some applications and toggling HDR can cause system instability while playing a game with ReLive enabled. The final two known issues include stutter on FreeSync displays while running at 240Hz with a Radeon RX 5700 series GPU and the AMD Radeon VII will sometimes have elevated memory clock speeds while the PC is idle. Hopefully most of these will be tackled in the next driver update.

If you are using an AMD Radeon graphics card, then you can find the new 19.10.2 driver for download, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Two huge games landed today. I'll be diving into The Outer Worlds myself but I am interested in checking out the Modern Warfare campaign at some point. Just a few weeks ago, AMD rolled out a new graphics driver containing Radeon Image Sharpening support for several RX 500 and RX 400 series GPUs. At the time, we thought it was odd that Vega was left out of the equation, particularly since the Radeon VII is still AMD’s highest end card. Now, that is being rectified, with this week’s driver update bringing RIS to Vega.

Support arrives as part of the Radeon Software 19.9.3 update, which also contains optimisations for Ubisoft’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint, which releases this week and will be one of the big games this year to fully embrace Radeon Image Sharpening, Ghost Recon Breakpoint joins a growing list, which also includes Borderlands 3 and Gears 5.

At first, Radeon Image Sharpening was a Navi-exclusive feature, with support only being found on the RX 5700 XT and RX 5700. Now, most of AMD’s current GPU stack has support for the feature.

For those who don’t know, Radeon Image Sharpening is a new tool that upscales gameplay and keeps details sharp while running at a lower rendering resolution. So if you are playing a game at 4K, but for the sake of performance, you want the rendering resolution set to 80%, then RIS should be able to disguise the visual difference a bit more convincingly. If you want to know more and see RIS in action, then you can check out our recent analysis, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Vega might not be the main focus these days with Navi GPUs beginning to roll out, but it still seems like a relevant GPU that should continue to be supported with features like this. Fortunately, in this case, AMD managed to get it up and running quite quickly. Are many of you running an AMD GPU at the moment? Have you tried Radeon Image Sharpening for yourself?

Earlier this year, Nvidia ended 32-bit OS support for its GPU drivers, shifting the focus over to 64-bit only. Now, AMD appears to be making a similar move, with reports stating that future versions of Radeon Software will not support 32-bit Windows.

The shift away from 32-bit support has been in the works for a few years now. Several companies have dropped support in the tech and gaming worlds. AMD is now being added to that list, with the company encouraging users to upgrade to a 64-bit version of Windows if they want to stay up to date.

This was confirmed in a statement sent over to 4Gamer, in which an AMD spokesperson said: “AMD Radeon Software support for x32-bit Windows operating systems has been moved to a legacy support mode — we are not planning to support x32-bit Windows operating systems in future driver releases. This change enables AMD to dedicate valuable engineering resources to developing new features and enhancements for graphics products based on the latest x64-bit Windows based operating systems.”

The report adds that “users can continue to use existing x32-bit drivers if they so choose”. However, if you want to make use of the latest software updates and features, then you will need to upgrade. We don't know when the first 64-bit only version of Radeon Software will be released but we are hoping to get some more clarification soon.

KitGuru Says: This was an inevitable move and we'll begin to see more software makers drop 32-bit support in the years to come. The user base for 32-bit Windows is likely very small at this point but anyone who still uses it should consider upgrading, particularly as more games and drivers begin to require it.

While AMD provide incremental updates to its Radeon Software throughout the year, it’s taken to comprehensive annual overhauls since the release of Catalyst Omega at the end of 2014. Now, it welcomes the Adrenalin Edition, getting Radeon owners’ blood pumping with a focus on latency reduction.

It might not be the big performance increase that Radeon users are used to at this point in the year, but less input lag means that players will see the game react to their click a lot sooner than before. The biggest improvement is seen in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, in which lag is reduced by 9ms, followed by an improvement of 5ms in Titanfall 2 and Rainbow Six Siege. This might not seem like much, but this time can mean life or death to the player in competitive scenarios.

Of course the move from Crimson ReLive 17.11.1 to Adrenalin 17.12.1 yields some framerate improvements, but this AMD’s focus across the year rather than an outright gain. This will likely see driver updates every other major release, similar to that of its competitor.

Regarding new features, AMD has added a new Radeon Overlay and a mobile app called AMD Link. Its new overlay makes adjusting settings, such as Frame Rate Target Control and FreeSync, on the fly a lot easier without having to leave the game you’re in.

Combined, the Radeon Overlay and AMD Link help monitor performance, temperature and hardware, removing the need for third party apps such as GPU-Z by giving built-in access to view frame rate, GPU clock speed, GPU temperature and more. This doesn’t monitor beyond the graphics card, however, so it might not remove the need entirely.

“Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition continues to set the bar high with remarkable features for allowing gamers to connect with other gamers around the world,” said Andrej Zdravkovic, corporate vice president of software, Radeon Technologies Group.

“Now gamers can tailor their gaming experience directly in-game, use our groundbreaking AMD Link mobile app to monitor their gaming performance on their phone, and in an instant, share their best highlights to their streaming platforms and social networks of choice. We've designed Adrenalin Edition as a powerful tool for those who aspire to achieve gaming greatness among friends and the community.”

AMD’s Radeon Software Adrenalin 17.12.1 is live now, with many more updates planned throughout the year.

KitGuru Says: It’s not as hard hitting as other updates, but AMD has continuously improved throughout the past two years. It’s not all about big numbers, as fast as possible, it’s about consistent and reliable performance that is delivered throughout the year. What do you think about AMD’s new Adrenalin update?

It has been two years since AMD doubled down on driver support and began rolling out Radeon Software: Crimson Edition. In 2016, the company decided to stick with Crimson for a bit longer, launching Radeon Software Crimson Relive. Now this year, AMD is going to start rolling out its next generation of Radeon Software ‘Adrenaline Edition'.

With Radeon Software Adrenaline Edition, AMD will be continuing its commitment to release major driver updates annually, as well as timely driver updates to coincide with major game releases. According to AMD, Radeon Software Crimson Edition (2015) received the highest user satisfaction rating of any AMD software ever, while Crimson Relive Edition maintained a 90 percent user satisfaction rating for 12 months in a row. AMD will be hoping to continue that streak with Adrenalin Edition.

There is not much else known about the Adrenalin Edition update at this point. However, the teaser video above does say that we should see it launch in December. Hopefully this driver release will bring some extra optimizations to help bring a performance boost to some of AMD's newer graphics cards.

KitGuru Says: I've had limited experience with Crimson ReLive Edition this year, though I did use Crimson Edition heavily throughout 2016. Are many of you currently using an AMD GPU? What are you hoping to see AMD bring to the table with its Adrenalin Edition software?

If you are a virtual reality fan, then you likely have your eyes peeled for tomorrow's launch of DOOM VFR on Steam. If you are planning to jump into Bethesda's first PC VR game, then both AMD and Nvidia have you covered with GPU driver updates.

Let's start off with AMD's update. Radeon Software ReLive Edition 17.11.4 is the latest version, bringing support for the Oculus Dash Open Beta, as well as Doom VFR for the best day-one experience. Aside from that, AMD's driver update fixes a few issues. For starters, Star Wars Battlefront II should no longer ‘hang' when switching display modes with Crossfire enabled. An issue where incorrect clock speeds and power values on RX Vega GPUs should also be fixed.

There are some known problems listed that AMD's driver team still needs to iron out. Some desktop productivity apps may experience latency when dragging or moving windows. This is something that I have also experienced while using an Nvidia GPU and Microsoft Excel this week.

AMD users may also experience an application hang during Rise of the Tomb Raider, and a hang when breaching walls with explosives in Rainbow Six Siege. You can download the latest version of Radeon Software, HERE.

On the Nvidia side, the latest driver version is 388.43, which is a Game Ready driver for DOOM VFR. If you are planning on playing this game, then the minimum system requirements call for an Intel Core i5-4590/AMD FX-8350, 8GB of RAM and a GTX 1070. The recommended requirements call for a Core i7-6700K/Ryzen 5 1600X, 16GB of RAM and a GTX 1080 or better.

You can download the latest Nvidia driver version through the GeForce Experience app.

KitGuru Says: Posts like this do make me wish that Nvidia would also be upfront about any ‘known issues' with a new driver version. AMD tends to be very consistent with it. Will any of you be playing Doom VFR over the weekend? I'm tempted to try it out, though I am still unsure if it will work with my Oculus Rift.

Multi-GPU users will find plenty to be pleased about with AMD's latest Radeon Software update. Version 17.9.2 will begin rolling out today and offers up some big performance gains when using a pair of RX Vega 56 or RX Vega 64 GPUs.

Using Radeon Software version 17.9.2, the folks over at AMD's performance labs measured a hefty performance improvement while running RX Vega 64 in mGPU mode, with gains as high as 80 percent. You can see the frame rates AMD is reporting in the graph below:

It might not be a perfect doubling of performance when adding a second GPU to the mix but an 80 percent gain is considered very good. Unfortunately, the exact resolution isn't mentioned but judging by the single-GPU results, I would guess these games are running at 4K. I have sent an email to our AMD contact for further clarification on this.

We didn't hear much about Vega running in CrossFire at launch but it seems the Radeon engineers have been working hard on getting it up to speed following launch. If you can manage to get your hands on two Vega GPUs for your rig, then it looks like for some games at least, you should be getting some decent performance improvements.

KitGuru Says: Have many of you managed to get your hands on an RX Vega GPU yet? Are you thinking about adding a second one to your system?

AMD is proud of its 90 percent user satisfaction rating since the launch of its Radeon Software Crimson ReLive Edition and, in hope of continuing such a feat, has a lot in store for its 17.7.2 update. The update aims to unlock high-performance gaming and engaging VR experiences, whilst shifting more focus onto game developers as well as gamers themselves.

Radeon Software 17.7.2 will introduce Enhanced Sync, a display technology that helps increase gameplay responsiveness alongside minimalising screen tearing. The folks over at AMD tested it with Overwatch to find that it provides 34 percent lower latency and 92 percent lower frame variance.

Radeon Chill returns with significant upgrades that AMD says “interactively regulates framerate”, supporting close to 40 of the biggest games around, although the company didn’t specify what titles. It is available for laptops, multi-GPU setups and Radeon XConnect-capable systems meaning that it will be coming to some mobile and external GPUS too. It even extends battery life in the HP Omen by up to 30 percent, although please note, this is tested on high settings only.

Radeon WattMan comprehensive control sees an upgrade to its power state controls and memory under clocking, giving users the choice between increased performance or improved power savings. 17.7.2 also sees improved game responsiveness by reducing the driver overhead. Tested using Tom Clancy’s The Division, this resulted in up to 31 percent quicker response time of 50ms.

Other features packed into the update include Frame Rate Targeting Control that limits frame rate and saves power with DirectX 12 and multi-GPU support, the reintroduction of refined colour controls with Per-Display Colour Controls and Radeon Settings and a redesign of most of the features found within the Catalyst Control Centre.

Shifting the focus from gamers to include developers, the Radeon Technologies Group has also included new tools and plug-ins to help game design, introducing the Radeon GPU Profiler and AMD Liquid VR 360 SDK.

The Profiler is a graphics visualisation tool which allows for low level, built-in hardware thread tracing as well as enabling support for modern APIs like DirectX 12 and Vulkan. This gives developers in-depth access to the GPU, allowing them to analyse Async Compute usage, event timing, pipline stalls, bottlenecks and other inefficiencies that could impact on performance.

The LiquidVR 360 SDK adds support for Immersive Ambisonic Audio while also allowing for the first end-to-end GPU-accelerated HEVC 4K-by-4K VR video playback on VR capable graphics cards.

Lastly, AMD has announced the Radeon Software Vanguard Beta Tester program, in which both gamers and professionals alike are eligible to be chosen to help improve Radeon Software by working directly with AMD.

KitGuru Says: This seems like quite an extensive update, which is wonderful news for both gamers and developers. What are you most excited about here? While not a developer myself, I personally like the idea that The Profiler could make future games much smoother if utilised properly.

If you happen to be a Warhammer 40K fan, then you are probably looking forward to the release of Dawn of War III later this week. As with any huge game launch, this also means GPU driver updates. We've already had a chance to look at Nvidia's latest ‘Game Ready' update and today, AMD began pushing out its latest Crimson ReLive driver, promising performance boosts and improved HDR while stealth-dropping a Quake Champions link on your desktop.

Here are the improvements the new version of Radeon Software offers:

Up to 7% performance improvement measured on Radeon RX 580 8GB graphics when compared to Radeon Software Crimson ReLive edition 17.4.3.
Improve Multi-GPU stuttering in Battlefield 1 with a 4K Display.
Removes corruption caused by HDMI scaling on some displays.
HDR colours should be improved within Mass Effect: Andromeda.

Now driver 17.4.4 will also add a tracked bit.ly shortcut link to your desktop for Quake Champions, Bethesda/id Software's upcoming hero shooter. The link takes you to the beta sign up page for the game. Advertisements within drivers aren't particularly uncommon and have appeared in the past, though it is rare to find beta sign-up links on your desktop after installing a driver update.

If you were wondering why there is a Quake Champions shortcut suddenly sitting on your desktop, then that would be why. There appears to be some cross-promotion between AMD and Bethesda at the moment, which will also extend to performance enhancements for Ryzen CPU users in future games, likely including Quake Champions.

KitGuru Says: I'm not too bothered by the Quake Champions link myself, especially since it only takes me a second to drag it into the recycling bin. Still, some may see it as an intrusive step, while others might just be confused as to how Quake Champions appeared on their PC.

Microsoft's rollout of the Windows 10 Creators Update has officially begun this week, which means there there are going to be plenty of changes. As a result, anyone upgrading their version of Windows 10 should also make sure to remember to upgrade their GPU drivers. Nvidia's Creators Update compatible driver has already begun rolling out via the GeForce Experience and today, AMD has published its latest drivers for the update too.

From today, Radeon graphics card users should be able to upgrade to Radeon Software Driver 17.4.2 and Radeon Pro Software Driver 17.4.2, which are specifically designed for the release of the Windows 10 Creators Update by Microsoft. This update adds in various 3D and mixed reality features to Windows alongside some gaming-oriented features.

AMD's new driver also enables professionals to create and review 8K content in its native resolution with upcoming Radeon Pro Solid State Graphics (SSG) technology. The SSG will enable real-time post-production of 8K video. The update also enables 8K output on Radeon Pro graphics cards with the necessary hardware support, currently the Radeon Pro WX 7100, 5100 and 4100.

AMD-Radeon-Software-Crimson-Edition-page-043-e1474563659545.jpg

With this new update, gamers can expect better support for High Dynamic Range (HDR) displays, with support now baked in for Radeon FreeSync 2 monitors, which supports variable refresh rates in addition to HDR. With the Creators Update, HDR can now be enabled within all applications. The second update for gamers is ‘Windows Game Mode', which allocates more CPU and GPU resources to the application in the foreground, rather than allowing those resources to be taken up by background processes. This should lead to a small performance bump in games.

Elsewhere, this update also improve security for Windows, with an all new Windows Defender and tools designed to keep your IP address secure.

KitGuru Says: I have yet to install the new Windows 10 update but I'm sure it will hit my machine soon enough. If any of you are updating, then be sure to grab the latest GPU drivers too.

AMD has been doing a great job at keeping up with recent game releases with its drivers ever since the launch of Radeon Software and it looks like things aren't going to be slowing down this year. Today we saw the launch of Conan Exiles and this weekend, the Ghost Recon Wildlands beta will be kicking off and now thanks to today's AMD Crimson ReLive 17.1.2 driver update, Radeon GPU users should be prepared to get the most out of their hardware with these two games.

Crimson ReLive Edition 17.1.2 Beta launched today, bringing support for Conan Exiles, an early access survival game based on Conan the Barbarian, as well as Ubisoft's upcoming Ghost Recon Wildlands Beta. Aside from that though, this driver will also fix a number of known issues present in the last driver update.

Here is the full fixed issues list:

  • Changing memory clocks with Radeon WattMan with more than one display connected may cause memory clocks to intermittently become stuck at their minimum setting or switch between min and max ranges intermittently causing display flickering.
  • Diablo III may experience smoke or lighting effects may appear corrupted when using DirectX 9 API.
  • Some applications may experience an intermittent or random runtime crash in atidxx64.dll.
  • FIFA 17 may experience a black screen on launch when using Hybrid Graphics or AMD PowerXpress system configurations.
  • Watch_Dogs 2 may experience an intermittent game crash after extended periods of play on some Radeon RX 300 series products.
  • Paragon may experience flickering in profile or store preview pages after changing graphics settings when using Multi GPU.
  • Forza Horizon 3 may experience a crash or application hang with the Blizzard Mountain DLC on some select Radeon GCN products.

There are a few known issues with this driver though. AMD warns that a small number of apps may experience issues with Borderless Fullscreen mode while using FreeSync. CS:GO and World of Warcraft can also experience performance issues the first time either game is launched after a system boot while FreeSync is enabled. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided may have performance problems in CrossFire mode with DX12 enables and some mouse cursor corruption may occur for RX 480 users.

With the launch of Radeon Software Crimson Edition, AMD embarked on a mission to deliver monthly driver updates to Radeon GPU users and this week, we got our July update. Radeon Software version 16.7.3 brings along a nice list of fixes and a sizeable performance boost in Rise of the Tomb Raider for RX 480 users.

For CrossFire users, you will be happy to hear that there are several fixes on offer in this update. For starters, crashing in Overwatch should now be resolved as well as instances of flickering in Rise of the Tomb Raider. Dirt Rally has had its terrain flickering issue fixed and those running CrossFire and a FreeSync display should hopefully see less issues when trying to launch of exit a game.

The Oculus Rift officially launched today with the first pre-orderers finally receiving their units so, in order to ensure that buyers are getting the best experience they can on their gaming rigs, Nvidia and AMD have both released new driver updates today aimed to optimize the day one experience for Rift owners.

AMD-Radeon-Software-e14464705552621

We will start off with AMD which released Radeon Software Crimson 16.3.2, which includes support for the Oculus Rift SDK v1.3 as well as the Radeon Pro Duo graphics card, making this the most stable and optimized VR driver from AMD to date. On top of that, this new driver packs in support for LiquidVR technology, which provides developers with the tools to better utilise the GCN architecture for VR. Some improvements have also been made to Hitman PC performance.

game-ready-drivers-e1446731499478

On the Nvidia side, we are getting GeForce driver 364.72, which is a Game Ready driver for the Oculus Rift with enhancements for games like Eve Valkyrie and Chrono. However, that isn't the only focus, this driver also contains specific optimizations for upcoming games Quantum Break, Killer Instinct, Dark Souls III and Paragon.

Nvidia's driver is already live and available through the GeForce Experience while AMD's new driver can be downloaded from their website, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Two big driver releases today from both AMD and Nvidia. Have any of you guys updated your drivers yet? Is everything running fine?

Ever since launching Radeon Software late last year, AMD has recommitted itself to driver support with big monthly updates. Today, AMD released Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.2, which brings some performance boosts to titles like Rise of the Tomb Raider and Ashes of Singularity, which is currently an excellent benchmarking tool for DirectX 12.

The first major highlight for this driver is optimizations for the Ashes of Singularity 2.0 benchmark, which evaluates performance with  DirectX 12. This update is also optimized a bit better for virtual reality content, allowing the R9 390, R9 Nano and Fury graphics cards to score as high as they should on the SteamVR Performance Test tool that launched this week.

AMD-Crsytal-Sseries

Those of you still playing Rise of the Tomb Raider on the PC should now see some performance and stability improvements while those playing XCOM 2 or are planning on grabbing The Division now have CrossFire profiles for multi-GPU users.

Aside from that, the changelog lists a bunch of fixes for things like flickering and stutter in a range of games including Fallout 4, Rise of the Tomb Raider and World of Warcraft. However, there are still some known issues, those using an AMD Radeon 59xx or 79xx dual-GPU card may find themselves unable to activate CrossFire at all, Core clock speeds on some graphics cards may not be consistent while playing games and Rise of the Tomb Raider may randomly crash with Tesselation enabled.

You can find the full list of details, HERE.

KitGuru Says: If you're running a Radeon graphics card right now, then let us know how you get on with the new driver.

Today marks the beginning of a new era for AMD, as the Catalyst Control Centre is being put to rest and we push forward with Radeon Software: Crimson Edition, the first step in AMD's plan to double its driver support efforts. From now on, we can expect six WHQL driver releases a year, along with a big special edition release each year.

Catalyst Control Centre

The Catalyst Control Centre was a little slow when it comes to load times. The user interface was also a little outdated, having remained largely the same for many years, so on that front alone, the switch to Radeon Software is a pleasing one.

Radeon Settings Home Page

While the old Catalyst home page would serve you with an advert of some kind, the new Radeon Settings home page does away with that, which helps with quicker boot times. You can also see that the amount of tabs available to click though has been significantly cut down in order to present a cleaner UI.

Radeon Software Gaming Radeon Software Overdrive

The new gaming tab will give you access to your Overdrive settings and global graphics settings. The functionality is familiar, with options for forced anti-aliasing, V-sync and frame rate target control, a fairly new feature that allows users to control their GPU output to target a specific frame rate, which can help with things like power consumption or temperatures in games where you don't necessarily need your GPU at full power, like MOBAs.

The new Overdrive window is also similar in terms of functionality. You get served with a warning about overclocking before getting access and from there, you are free to tweak with power limits, core clocks, memory clocks and fan control.

Radeon Software Video Tab

The new video settings tab lets you customize the video playback experience, with settings for brightness, AMD's ‘fluid motion' video technology, vibrance and sharpness. Most people will leave this on the default setting, though there are plenty of options for those who know what they are doing.

Radeon Display

The new display settings window consolidates what used to be three separate tabs in to one screen. The basic window allows you to set up FreeSync and Virtual Super Resolution- which can now be used on the desktop to give lower resolution displays more screen real-estate for multitasking. However, clicking on the ‘additional settings' option will bring up the old UI, with access to other features like custom resolutions, or setting your preferred colour depth.

Radeon Software System Tab

Even the system information tab contains more details. In previous drivers, this tab would only show you information about your GPU, or AMD CPU if you had one, but now it shows Intel CPUs, your operating system and system memory too.

That just about concludes our tour of the new user interface but there have been plenty of behind the scenes improvements as well, which are worth talking about. For starters, launch times have been substantially improved, with systems featuring a Haswell or Skylake Core i7 and a Radeon R9 390 or Fury GPU booting the software anywhere between 2.8x and 4.6x faster than the previous Catalyst driver.

Radeon Crimson Power Draw

On top of that, system power draw has also been a big focus. Radeon Software: Crimson Edition will control power usage in more scenarios with R9 300 and Fury series GPUs. This includes simple tasks like watching HD video on YouTube. As the graph above shows, AMD is touting a 20W power saving for the entire system between Radeon Software and Catalyst Control Centre while watching a 1080p video on YouTube.

Radeon Crimson Rocket League

Frame Rate Target Control (FRTC) can also now be utilised in DirectX 9 titles, which can lead to power savings. Limiting Rocket League to 90 frames per second at 1080p yielded some pretty positive results, according to AMD's own test, showing a total system power saving of 125W simply by limiting the frame rate, in a system using an Intel Core i7 5960x CPU, 16GB of DDR4 RAM and an R9 Fury X.

CrossFire users will be happy to learn that some improvements have been made to frame pacing in the new driver. This feature is also capable of working with DirectX 9 titles now, in addition to DirectX 11. There has also been a reported reduction in frame hitching during games, which should result in a smoother experience overall.

While AMD initially announced Radeon Software: Crimson Edition earlier this month, it has taken a couple of weeks to put the finishing touches on everything. We are happy to report that the driver is now available to download, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Radeon Software: Crimson Edition seems like a step in the right direction for AMD and its driver support. The new UI is much nicer but a lot of behind the scenes changes have also been made to help improve the overall experience. How many of you are currently running an AMD GPU? What do you think of all of the new driver changes?

This week, AMD announced a massive change to how it is handling its GPU drivers. The red team announced that the Radeon Technologies Group would be doing away with the Catalyst Control Centre entirely, putting drivers under a new banner: ‘Radeon Software: Crimson Edition'.  The new drivers will feature an entirely new design and additional features.

At the time of announcement, a release date wasn't revealed but rumour claims that it won't be far away at all, with signs currently pointing to the 24th of November.

AMD-Radeon-Software-e1446470555262

This is all coming from an anonymous source speaking with foreign site, Zolkorn. The site claims it got this release date from a credible source but could not name them, so much like last night's Zen news, take is all with a pinch of salt. If any of you missed our earlier article on Radeon Software: Crimson Edition, you can catch most of the information, HERE.

However, in short, Catalyst is dead. From now on, AMD will release six WHQL certified drivers per year and there will be one special edition launch each year, so last year we got Omega, this year we're getting Crimson and next year there will be another one under a new name.

KitGuru Says: The source is anonymous so treat this release date as rumour or speculation for now. However, given that AMD just announced its new drivers, it would make sense for it to follow up with a release fairly quickly. Did any of you catch the Radeon Software announcement earlier this week? Are you happy about the changes?

About a week ago, we began hearing rumours that AMD was preparing a new special edition driver, much like last year's ‘Omega' update. However, it turns out that something much bigger was planned, Catalyst Control Centre is dead. AMD is now introducing ‘Radeon Software', which will completely overhaul the driver experience for Radeon GPU users.

The Catalyst Control Centre first launched back in 2002 but now it seems that it is time for a change. AMD recently set up the Radeon Technologies Group, which has been working on Radeon Software: Crimson Edition. Big name updates like ‘Crimson Edition', will be yearly driver releases, though there will be plenty of incremental updates in-between, which will follow the familiar X.XX numbering scheme, for example, the first Crimson update will be known as version 15.11.

AMD Radeon Software

Aside from the big name change, there will be a completely overhauled user interface, performance improvements and some new features. First off, there is a new ‘Game Manager' tab, which allows you to view your games on one screen and set graphics settings from the driver. Overdrive has some changes too, allowing you to configure unique over-clocking settings on a per game basis.

Eyefinity users can now set up their displays with just one click and things like VSR, FreeSync or GPU scaling can all be configured under the ‘Display' tab.

AMD plans to have WHQL driver releases each year and the software will check itself for updates every two weeks. However, you can just do things manually if you want to. Expect Radeon Software: Crimson Edition to launch soon.
