Sea of Thieves has proven to be one of Xbox’s most successful console exclusives. Launching all the way back in 2018, the game has gone from strength to strength, selling millions of copies on Steam alone and promising a decade’s worth of support from the team at Rare. Following reports that the game would be going multiplatform, Microsoft has officially announced Sea of Thieves for PS5.

Sharing ‘a message from our crew’ the team at Rare officially announced that Sea of Thieves is coming to PlayStation 5 on the 30th of April, saying:

“Something we've always been passionate about  is that idea that we should remove barriers that prevent players from playing together. Sea of Thieves is all about players creating stories together in a shared pirate world. The fact that players on PlayStation can step into that world and you can cross-play with all of those other platforms just means that it's such an exciting time for Sea of Thieves.”

They continue, “This is the first time in Rare's nearly 40-year history that we've shipped a game on a PlayStation platform, and that is cause for celebration for both Rare as a studio, and Sea of Thieves You know it's a really momentous occasion for us, and we know that we're starting from kind of scratch when it comes to our relationship and our reputation with a PlayStation audience.”

As far as Xbox exclusives go, Sea of Thieves is an excellent choice to bring to more platforms. The game has already seen a great amount of success on PC and Xbox – and especially in being a live service title – its outward expansion can only be a good thing.

Sea of Thieves has quietly become one of Microsoft’s best Xbox console exclusives. Launching all the way back in 2018, the game saw a lukewarm response upon its initial release. 5 years and 10 Seasons later however, the game is better than ever. Following rumours that Microsoft is planning to bring Sea of Thieves to other consoles, the team have announced Season 11, bringing with it an overhauled quest system, beginner-friendly features and more.

Publishing a video to YouTube, the team at Rare officially announced Sea of Thieves’ 11th Season. Set to go live on the 23rd of January, the update will bring with it a whole bunch of quality life fixes and features.

The headlining feature is undoubtedly the game’s overhaul to its quest system. According to the team, this should allow for access to “all voyages, story-driven Tall Tales, and world events from the ship's quest table.”

Alongside this, the game’s overall tutorial system has been reworked, with “redesigned menus which display and track your progression more clearly, and guides you to your next objective.”

Other notable changes include:

  • Fast travel to voyage locations
  • Improved reputation system
  • Voyages rebalanced with new loot types
  • On-demand world events

Many of the changes coming about with Season 11 seem to be in favour of new players. This lines up with previous rumours which claimed that Sea of Thieves is likely coming to other consoles soon, including the Nintendo Switch and PS5. If this is indeed the case, then Season 11 looks set to be a great way for new players to jump right in. We will have to wait and see whether anything is announced at the upcoming Xbox Developer Direct.

Sea of Thieves has proven to be one of Xbox’s most successful console exclusives. Launching all the way back in 2018, the game has gone from strength to strength, selling millions of copies on Steam alone and promising a decade’s worth of support from the team at Rare. With more than 30 million players already, Microsoft looks set to bring the multiplayer pirate adventure to rival systems.

As claimed by industry insider Jeff Grubb during his ‘Game Mess Mornings’ podcast, following recent reports that Microsoft was preparing to bring one of its console exclusives to other systems, Grubb offered a more concrete take on the leak, saying:

“Sea of Thieves, right–I'll say I've heard that is one that might be coming to other platforms. When I first started hearing these rumors, I was like, ‘Oh this is probably about Sea of Thieves, because I've heard that could come to Switch and PlayStation.' And maybe that might be the kind of thing where like, actually all of this stuff is happening, and Microsoft is kind of trying to rejigger its strategy.”

Sea of Thieves wouldn’t be the first Xbox exclusive to come to another system, with the side-scrolling metroidvania Ori and the Blind Forest – and its sequel – both arriving on the Switch eventually.

That said, if there was a game which would certainly benefit from being multiplatform, Sea of Thieves would be it due to its multiplayer-focus and Games as a Service model. Hopefully we hear official word on this soon.

Sea of Thieves has quietly become one of Microsoft’s best Xbox console exclusives. Launching all the way back in 2018, the game saw a lukewarm response upon its initial release. 5 years and 10 Seasons later however, the team at Rare have added a whole bunch of long-requested features – now including private PvE worlds.

Detailing the update on their blog, the team at Rare said: “A sensational new Season has begun! Featuring the arrival of Guilds, a competitive twist on Voyages and a new mode for private play, there’s a lot to be excited about before you even get to the brand new Plunder Pass and Seasonal Renown rewards.”

With that, just some of the added features arriving with this update include:

  • Player-created guilds with added customisation
  • 24-player parties
  • You can now sail your friends’ ships even when offline
  • New guild upgrades
  • Improvements to hit detection for the pistol, blunderbuss and Eye of Reach
  • Better sword combat
  • Various quality-of-life improvements

The full list of changes and improvements can be found HERE, but for some by far the biggest update will be arriving in December, when the ‘Safer Seas’ game mode will go live – “enabling players to explore the Sea of Thieves without disruption from other crews.”

Sea of Thieves appears to be one example of a live-service game done right, with each successive Season bringing many requested improvements alongside additional features. It will be interesting to see what the game looks like another 5 years from now.

Live service games are all the rage nowadays, with many studios vying to have a hit which could last for a decade or more. One game which is well on its way to this milestone is Sea of Thieves. First released 5 years ago back in 2018, the team at Rare have now mapped out the next 5 years of Sea of Thieves.

Sea of Thieves has been celebrating its 5th anniversary, with the team at Rare recently releasing a documentary on the game’s creation called ‘Voyage of a Lifetime’. Alongside the documentary, Microsoft published a post on the Xbox blog detailing the development trials and tribulations of the live service title.

While an interesting read in its own right, the conclusion of the post saw Rare tease that Sea of Thieves’ journey has only just begun, having mapped out the next 5 years – with the game’s director Mike Chapman saying:

“I think 10 years of Sea of Thieves will feel like a long time – but also, we’ll blink and be there. And I still think we’ll have unfinished business when we get to that point.”

The concept of Sea of Thieves lends itself to a great deal of potential and so it is unlikely that the team at Rare will run out of things to add to the game. It will be interesting to see what exactly they have planned for the next half-decade.

In recent years we have seen a greater effort by both studios and publishers to document the development process for a wide variety of games. Following the recent release of the 23-hour long documentary chronicling the development of Psychonauts 2, Microsoft has now announced that a Sea of Thieves documentary is set to premiere later this month.

Sea of Thieves recently reached its 5th anniversary and as part of the celebrations it was announced that a Sea of Thieves documentary is on its way. Dubbed “Sea of Thieves: Voyage of a Lifetime” a trailer for the documentary has been released, with the description reading as follows:

“Introducing Sea of Thieves: Voyage of a Lifetime! From never before seen prototype footage to developers and fans discussing what it means to #BeMorePirate, mark your calendars and join us on March 20th to celebrate five years of the seas we share with this brand new documentary.”

As noted, the documentary will go live on the 20th of March and will be free to watch on YouTube via the official Sea of Thieves channel. While it will be hard to surpass the likes of Double Fine PsychOdyssey – a 23-hour long documentary on the development of Psychonauts 2 – any insight into the innerworkings of the video games that we love is always highly welcome and appreciated.

It will be exciting to see what new details we learn about Sea of Thieves when the Voyage of a Lifetime documentary goes live on the 20th of March.

All through last year, we heard rumours that Rare was remastering its classic N64 shooter, GoldenEye 007, for Xbox consoles. As it turns out, this revamped version of the game is heading to both Xbox and Nintendo Switch, and it will be available later this week.

Months on from the official announcement, Nintendo and Microsoft have today announced that GoldenEye will be available on Nintendo Switch via the Nintendo Online Expansion Pack, and on Xbox consoles. Unfortunately, it has already been confirmed that this version of the game won't include online multiplayer.

The remaster will retain all of the original title’s features, including the campaign, local split-screen multiplayer, and even all of the cheats available within the original N64 game. That being said, it will also be ‘Enhanced’ with some modern conveniences such as dual analogue stick support; native 16:9 aspect ratio, up to 4K resolution, a stable frame rate and game achievements.

GoldenEye 007 will be available through Xbox Game Pass and anyone who already owns the Rare Replay bundle on Xbox consoles will also get access to the game through a free update.

One of the most surprising announcements at Nintendo’s recently held Direct was the reveal that the long-elusive GoldenEye 007 would be leaving its Nintendo 64 shackles and would be coming to the Switch. Even more surprising however is the fact that the game is set to also come to Microsodt’s Xbox consoles – though with some upsides and downsides.

Making the announcement on the Xbox Blog, Craig Duncan, the Studio Head at Rare said “Since its original release in 1997, GoldenEye 007 has remained a beloved classic in the hearts and minds of millions of fans worldwide. Today, we’re excited to announce that a new generation of players will soon get to experience the genre-defining stealth shooter gameplay for themselves, faithfully recreated to preserve the action and excitement of the original while adding new features for the modern age of gaming.”

The game will retain all of the original title’s features, including the campaign, local split-screen multiplayer, and even all of the cheats available within the original N64 game. That being said, it will also be ‘Enhanced’ with some modern conveniences such as dual analogue stick support; native 16:9 resolution up to 4K Ultra HD; a stable frame rate and game achievements.

Though it does come with many enhancements, it is unfortunate to see the game not seeing online multiplayer support as is possible with the Switch re-release of GoldenEye 007.

There is no release date for GoldenEye, but when it does, it will be available across the Xbox One family as well as the Series X|S devices – both through Game Pass and as a free update to Rare Replay owners.

The Xbox and Bethesda showcase is coming up later this evening and so far, very little has leaked. We already know about the new Forza Horizon 5 expansion, which will be revealed at the show, and now, one of Microsoft's other planned surprises may have been revealed. According to reports, Banjo-Kazooie is being revived.

A developer working at NightDive Studios recently went on a podcast and discussed some of what they heard from developers at GDC in March. Apparently, Banjo-Kazooie kept popping up in discussions and talk of a new game has persisted for several months.

Xbox head, Phil Spencer, has previously commented on bringing more family-friendly IP to Xbox, which likely led to this franchise being revived. Prior to this, the last time Microsoft officially did anything with the franchise was a few years ago, when Banjo-Kazooie joined the Super Smash Bros Ultimate roster.

Whether or not we see a brand new Banjo-Kazooie, or a remastered collection of older titles (or both), still remains to be seen. The Xbox and Bethesda showcase airs at 6PM BST today, so we'll know how legitimate this rumour is in just a matter of hours.

It has been just over a year since Rare’s 007 GoldenEye remaster resurfaced online with fresh leaks and even a playable build. Now a year later, it looks like GoldenEye will be re-releasing, as new evidence points to a remaster nearing the end of development.

Rare originally began working on this remaster back in 2006 for the Xbox 360’s Xbox Live Arcade, but the project was scrapped. Back in January, there was evidence to suggest that the project has been picked back up and is nearing completion, including new achievements. Now, these achievements have begun popping up on Xbox.com, and we can see that testers have been playing the game and unlocking new achievements that weren't in previous versions.

As shared by Wario64, achievements for 007 GoldenEye have been spotted on Microsoft's official servers. New achievements not seen in the January leak have also been spotted, and some Xbox Live accounts have unlocked these achievements, suggesting that playtesting is underway.

All of the achievements listed also have new art, giving us some very small screenshots of various levels in the game.

We've been anticipating a re-release of GoldenEye on Xbox for months now. All signs are pointing to Microsoft saving the game for a shadow-drop, so the game will likely be announced and released in quick succession. Microsoft has an Xbox and Bethesda showcase planned for the 12th of June, so we will likely get an official announcement then.

It has been just over a year since Rare's 007 GoldenEye remaster resurfaced online with fresh leaks and even a playable build. Now a year later, it looks like GoldenEye will be re-releasing, and it could be dropping within the next few weeks.

Rare originally began working on this remaster back in 2006 for the Xbox 360's Xbox Live Arcade, but the project was scrapped. Back in January, there was evidence to suggest that the project has been picked back up and is nearing completion, with new achievements for the game being listed.

Now speaking on a Giant Bomb stream, Jeff Grubb has revealed (via VGC) that he's heard from sources that Microsoft will be announcing the game, and it is coming soon, possibly within the “next couple of weeks”.

Nothing has been announced officially yet, but the 007 GoldenEye remaster is expected to release on both Xbox and PC, as well as the Nintendo Switch. The game should also be a day-one title for Xbox Game Pass subscribers.

KitGuru Says: The updated achievement list for GoldenEye was strong evidence that a re-release is on the way. Now it seems we won't have to wait too much longer to see it officially announced.

Over the last couple of years, a number of leaks have shown that Rare was at one point working on a remaster of 007 GoldenEye, with plans to release the game on Xbox consoles. The project was eventually scrapped, but new evidence suggests that it may have been revived recently.

The cancelled Xbox 360 remaster is actually playable already, as an early build of the game leaked in early 2021. Now recently, Xbox Live has been updated with a list of new achievements for GoldenEye, listing it as a new game with a new set of achievements and larger total  Gamer Score compared to the original version.

Since True Achievements pulls its achievement lists directly through an Xbox Live API, this means work has recently been done on the backend for this game specifically, hinting at a potential re-release for the game on Xbox consoles. Given that Microsoft typically brings all games to PC as well nowadays, we could see the game on PC via Game Pass and Steam too.

Microsoft has not announced anything yet, but this is pretty strong evidence to suggest that 007 GoldenEye will be returning in some form this year. Whether or not it ends up being a modern remaster, or a finished version of the Xbox 360 build of the game still remains to be seen.

KitGuru Says: 007 GoldenEye is a classic with a lot of fans still to this day. I don't expect a full remake out of this, but it sounds like we'll be getting a remaster in the not too distant future and of course, a release on Game Pass.

Ever since Microsoft announced its Xbox Game Pass subscription service, the console manufacturer has made it clear that subscriptions are the future – at least in the eyes of Xbox. Despite this, many fans flocked to storefronts to buy Rare’s Sea of thieves outright – 5 million in fact.

Making the announcement on their blog, Sea of Thieves developers Rare said “Even as we finish celebrating the grand milestone of 25 million Sea of Thieves players, we’re already rolling out the barrel again as we surpass five million units sold on Steam!”

Discussing what this milestone means for them, Rare said “With Sea of Thieves being our first game developed in-house for PC as well as Xbox, we’re absolutely delighted to see such a huge influx of new pirates starting their adventures since the game made it to Steam in June last year.”

Whether through Steam or Game Pass, Rare took the opportunity to say “No matter which platform you play Sea of Thieves on, it would never have had this success without the support of you, the players – so all we can say is thank you! We’re overjoyed to see more and more players – regardless of platform, device or where they are in the world – joining us on our pirate odyssey and making the Sea of Thieves an ever more vibrant place”

Sea of Thieves was one of Xbox Game Pass’s earliest successes, with the multiplayer first-person pirate adventure game garnering more than 1 million players within its first 2 days on the market – ultimately becoming the fastest-selling new IP released for the Xbox One.

Sea of Thieves has seen consistent growth since its initial launch in March of 2018, seemingly both through Game Pass and premium sales. Ever since Microsoft shifted its focus to Xbox Game Pass, sales figures for Microsoft titles have been rare, with most numbers accounting for total players and not individual sales. It is therefore interesting and encouraging to see Sea of Thieves succeed both within and outside of Xbox Game Pass, proving that there is a place in the industry for both. Sea of Thieves is currently 50% off on Steam.

Back in late 2019, Microsoft announced Rare's next major game – Everwild. We've had very little news around this game since then, but now, the game does have a new design director.

As reported by VGC, Garry Napper, who previously worked as the design lead on games like Alien Isolation, has joined Rare now to work on Everwild, adding new creative voices to the team after some major departures earlier this year, including the game's former Creative Director, Simon Woodroffe.

While Everwild was announced in 2019, various insiders were unable to get further details on the game for a long time. That changed over the Summer, when the game lost its creative director and reportedly began going through a reboot process. Everwild is not expected to release until 2024 or beyond.

In its original form, Everwild was supposed to be a pure adventure game with no combat. With creative leadership changing and the project going through a reboot, it is possible that this has changed. Everwild could also end up being a very different looking game by the time we get to see it in action.

KitGuru Says: Everwild had an interesting reveal, but there are plenty of other exclusives coming down the pipeline to ease the wait. Have you been looking forward to Everwild since its reveal a couple of years ago?

Sea of Thieves seems to be one of Microsoft and Rare’s greatest modern successes. While the game launched in a relatively bare-bones state, it has seen consistent support from both Rare and Microsoft, adding a great deal of new content and amassing a dedicated audience as a result. This audience is now bigger than ever, with the game seeing its biggest active audience since launch.

Making the announcement on their blog, the Executive Producer for Sea of Thieves, Joe Neate, said “It’s been over a month since we released Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life into the wild blue yonder as part of Season Three, and since that emotional launch day we’ve been bowled over by the response from the Sea of Thieves community. From your reactions on social media to your fan art and stories of exploring the five new Tall Tales, it’s been amazing – and all this excitement resulted in our busiest ever month on the seas, with June seeing 4.8 million active pirates out on the water!”

As part of this celebration, the team announced that “the weekend of August 20th-23rd plays host to our latest Gold & Glory Weekend, offering double gold and reputation gains along with Seasonal Renown boosts for all treasure handed in to the Trading Companies!”

Sea of Thieves launched in March of 2018 to a modest amount of fanfare, with many players claiming that the Game Pass title offered too little in the way of content. In the years since, the game has gone from strength to strength, adding new content and even collaborating with Pirates of the Caribbean.

All the while, Microsoft’s Xbox Game has continued to amass more subscribers, drawing a greater number of eyes towards Rare’s open world multiplayer pirate game. It is likely due to a combination of these reasons that the game is where it is right now, seeing its biggest month ever years after release. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Sea of Thieves.

Microsoft has seemed to fully embrace the PC market with regards to Xbox and its exclusive games. That being said, it would appear as though some aspects to PC gaming, namely mod support and player tweaks, is a bit of a step too far. As part of the latest update, Steam players of Sea of Thieves can no longer modify game files to change FOV.

Rare recently released the latest major patch for Sea of Thieves which introduces the Pirates of The Caribbean crossover. As part of this update however, Rare detailed a change introduced to the game, affecting Steam players in a negative way.

The patch notes reads as follows: “On Steam, players are no longer able to modify game files in order to exceed the maximum player field of view”. In Sea of Thieves, the FOV for the game maxes out at 90 typically, however steam users were able to edit an .ini to increase that field of view. This is no longer the case.

In response to complaints regarding this change, a Rare representative explained the team’s thought process, saying “The FOV modification for Steam players was never intentional and has been removed in order to restore the intended settings of Sea of Thieves. There are no intentions to change this in future.”

While this may seem like an odd decision on Rare’s part, due to the online nature of the game, it is possible that having a higher FOV could lead to a slight advantage in PVP situations. Evenso, the decision to limit this feature is an odd one, especially when FOV can be considered an accessibility setting for those who feel sick when using lower fields of view. It will be interesting to see if Rare ever backtracks on this decision.

Xbox really doubled down on new first-party game announcements during E3 this year, with new trailers for Starfield, Halo Infinite, Redfall, The Outer Worlds 2 and more. Curiously, Rare's next game, Everwild, was missing despite being announced back in 2019. As it turns out, it looks like Everwild has been rebooted and is restarting development.

Late last year, Rare creative director, Simon Woodroffe, left the company and as a result, the Everwild team was shaken up a bit. According to sources speaking with VGC, Everwild's new creative director is none other than Rare veteran, Gregg Mayles, and the game is now being rebooted.

People familiar with the game's development said that the game has been “restarted from scratch” and now, the studio is targeting a 2024 release window, although it could slip further. In response to the report, Everwild executive producer, Louise O'Connor, confirmed some of the claims, such as the fact that Mayles is now Creative Director on the project, but did not confirm the reboot or targeted release window.

The initial reveal trailer for Everwild did not give us any gameplay details and as it turns out, the team was “struggling to define a clear direction” for the game, in part due to a decision to not include any combat.

If all of this proves to be true, then it is unlikely that we see Everwild in action or at a major Xbox event any time soon.

KitGuru Says: Everwild is still on the way, but it sounds like it is going to take a lot longer than anticipated.

A modder has managed to re-create most of Rare's classic shooter, GoldenEye 007, all using Far Cry 5's map editing tools. Every level from the original game has been rebuilt within Far Cry 5, with the exception of the game's two bonus levels.

The modder, who goes by Krollywood online, spoke with Kotaku about the endeavour, revealing that it took well over a thousand hours of work to complete, spread across a near three-year span.

The reason for building this on top of Far Cry 5 is simple, Ubisoft's map editor for the game is easier to use than others and it also includes assets from other titles, like Assassin's Creed and Watch Dogs, making it easier to match the 007 GoldenEye style.

Interestingly, this was all built using a PlayStation 4 rather than a PC. Unfortunately, players won't be able to take up projects like this when Far Cry 6 comes out, as Ubisoft has made the decision to not include a level editor with the next major entry in the series.

Ever since its founding in 1985, Rare has been the brains behind a number of classic video game titles and franchises, its most lucrative period of which was most likely during the Nintendo 64 era. One of the games which never made its way to the console however was Dinosaur Planet. Now thanks to an unreleased build, fans have been able to take a look at the game.

As announced by game preservationists ‘Forest of Illusion’ a December 2000 build of Rare’s unreleased ‘Dinosaur Planet’ has now been released. This build was reportedly obtained by purchasing the disc from a private game collector in Sweden for an unknown sum.

Following this, gameplay of the title has been shown off, 20 minutes of which can be found HERE thanks to Digital Foundry’s John Linneman who managed to get the game running on a Nintendo 64.

Dinosaur Planet was a 3D adventure game which was originally intended to release on the Nintendo 64. Eventually however, the game was restructured and released as Star Fox Adventures on the GameCube in 2002. It is interesting to see just how different the build is from the final game, and what could have been, had the game not been altered to tie into the Star Fox franchise (a decision which was reportedly suggested by Shigeru Miyamoto).

Ever since its founding in 2014, Playtonic Games has established itself as a reliable video game developer with a focus on creating games which harken back to previous video game generations. Following the release of Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair in 2019, the studio has remained mostly silent on its next project, until now.

Taking to Twitter, the studio released an update saying “We'd like to give our community, our friends, a giant hug. We know you're all wondering what we have cooking, and although we can't say just yet, something will be revealed SOON. Thank you for being patient with us.”

Since its founding in 2014, Playtonic Games, who are made up of ex-Rare developers, has focused on creating throwback titles of classic video games. So far, the studio has released two games. The first, Yooka-Laylee, served as a spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie. Its sequel, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair meanwhile paid homage to the Donkey Kong Country series.

The original Yooka-Laylee received a mixed reception, but its sequel was much more loved. It will be interesting to see what the studio has planned for its third game, whether it will be part of the Yooka-Laylee series, and what classic video game series it will draw inspiration from next. Whatever Playtonic’s next project is, it looks like we won't have to wait too long to find out.

Late last week, Rare's cancelled GoldenEye 007 remaster resurfaced online, with one YouTuber putting up a full playthrough of the game. Given that the build is content complete and fully playable, it was only a matter of time before it leaked onto the wider web. Last night, the game became widely available.

Rare was working on this GoldenEye 007 remaster back in 2007 for the Xbox 360. It was ultimately cancelled due to licensing issues and eventually, Activision managed to publish a remaster of its own. Of course, Rare is the original studio behind GoldenEye 007, so there has been fan interest floating around the cancelled remaster for quite sometime now.

We can't link directly to the leaked build of the game, but it is now available to download from various places and not just being passed around in private Discord circles.

Of course, the game was built for Xbox Live Arcade on the Xbox 360, so you will need the Xenia emulator to run the ROM. You won't be able to access online multiplayer, but you will be able to check out the fully remastered campaign.

KitGuru Says: We've had a couple of interesting cancelled game leaks lately, with the previous one being a cancelled Tomb Raider remake for the PSP. Are there any cancelled games from years past that you would like to see recovered?

Back in the days of the Xbox Live Arcade, a team at Rare was working on a remaster for GoldenEye 007. The game was ultimately cancelled, but remnants of it still exist. Now, one person has managed to reveal the remaster in its entirety.

Over on YouTube, user ‘Graslu00' uploaded a 2-hour long video, showing off the GoldenEye 007 remaster being played from beginning to end in 4K resolution and at 60 frames per second:

The game is running in an emulator to achieve the final resolution, so the game would not have looked this sharp on an Xbox 360. Rare developed the remaster back in 2007 but unfortunately, even with Microsoft's assistance, copyright issues got in the way. Due to this, the game never got an official release.

Over the years. small chunks of footage have been released but this is the first time we've seen the full game from start to finish. It is an interesting look at another unreleased piece of gaming history.

As we've known for some time now, Sea of Thieves is switching to a seasonal content model this year, with the first season and its accompanying ‘battle pass' arriving this week. Now, just ahead of the battle pass rollout, Rare has detailed what it will actually include.

As you'd expect, each Sea of Thieves season will run for three months. Each season, there is a free ‘battle pass' with 100 levels, you progress through the battle pass by completing adventures and in-world events. With each level up, you can expect gold, doubloons and cosmetic items.

While the battle pass is free, the ‘Plunder Pass' is the premium track. This will sell for just under 1000 ‘Ancient Coins', Sea of Thieves in-game premium currency. The UK cash equivalent is around £7.99. As you would expect, the Plunder Pass will net you more rewards at a more frequent pace. There will also be some exclusive cosmetics tied to the premium pass.

Rare also explained that its seasons will include monthly updates, so when Season One goes live, you'll have a month to catch up on live events, world events etc, then more content will arrive the following month. After three months, the season ends and the next season begins.

KitGuru Says: Are many of you planning on jumping into Sea of Thieves for its new seasonal content? Do you prefer this to the less frequent, larger updates a couple of times a year?

Back in December, Rare announced some pretty big changes coming to Sea of Thieves in 2021. The biggest change is that development on the competitive mode ‘The Arena' is coming to an end, with the developers focusing on the core game moving forward. Alongside this, a new seasonal content system is being put into place supported by Battle Passes.

The first season of Sea of Thieves content starts on the 28th of January, at which point the first battle pass will be available. This features 100 progression levels, granting unique unlocks as you continue to play.

As part of the season one launch, there will be a new voyage type for the Merchant Alliance trading company. Additional content will also drop over the next few months, leading up to Season 2 in late March or April.

The battle pass has a free tier and a paid tier known as the Plunder Pass, which will net you more rewards. Pricing has not been revealed yet, but we'll find out more about that and how the new system works in practise later next week.

Each new season will include live events, as well as bigger featured events. The in-game Pirate Emporium store will be updated, naturally, there will be quality of life patches along the way too in-case any issues pop up.

The downside here is that development on Sea of Thieves' Arena mode is winding down. Apparently, 97% of players stick to the adventure mode, so while Arena will continue to be an in-game option for PvP-only matches, it is not going to be a major focus moving forward.

KitGuru Says: Do many of you still jump back into Sea of Thieves every so often? What do you think of the new season and battle pass model?

Battletoads is one of Rare’s oldest and most well-known video games. The most recent entry in the beat ‘em up platformer franchise was unveiled back at E3 2018, with very little information following since – aside from a gameplay trailer at E3 2019. Now, in a surprise announcement Microsoft released a new trailer, showcasing more gameplay alongside an official release date of August 2020.

Posted on its socials, Xbox announced that “The Battletoads are back! Join Rash, Zitz and Pimple as they smash, stomp, drill, turbo bike, leap, shoot and generally be toadally awesome in their all-new, action-packed, multi-genre adventure of choreographed chaos! Battletoads launches on Xbox, Windows 10, Xbox Game Pass and Steam on August 20th. Developed by Dlala Studios in partnership with Rare.”

Alongside the release date announcement was a new trailer, which showcased more gameplay and some of the levels that players will traverse, while detailing brief story snippets – showing the battletoads working together to defeat the Topians.

When Battletoads was made playable at Microsoft’s X019 convention, some players expressed concerns regarding the gameplay mechanics and feel. Perhaps it is for that reason that Microsoft chose to go dark or so long with the title.

Regardless, fans won’t have too long to wait to get their hands on Battletoads, as it’ll be releasing on the 20th of August for both Xbox One and PC, as well as being available day-and-date on Xbox Game Pass. With Battletoads being the first new entry in the series in 26 years, it’ll be interesting to see the reception to the game following its launch in less than 3 weeks.

Sea of Thieves has come a long way since its launch in 2018. What originally started out as a lukewarm multiplayer title has turned into a more expansive and fun pirate adventure with a dedicated, sizeable player base. That has become all the more clear this week, with Sea of Thieves surpassing 15 million players.

Over 15 million people have played Sea of Thieves since March 2018, with one million new players coming via Steam. It is worth noting that the Steam version of the game only just launched in June. In total, five million new players have come to Sea of Thieves since January of this year.

June was naturally the biggest growth month for Sea of Thieves, in large part thanks to the game's release on Steam. In terms of active players though, there are 3.3 million players regularly logging in each month.

As you might expect, this milestone celebration post ends with a thank you to the players, with Rare saying: “On behalf of all of us at Rare, I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who’s ever played Sea of Thieves for helping to get us this far. It’s a game that we love making, and there’s plenty more to come. See you on the seas.”

Custom and private game servers aren’t nearly as common nowadays, particularly in games published by larger publishers. Support for modding and community tools is starting to grow once again though, with the most recent example being Sea of Thieves.

Custom servers have been something that Rare has been mulling over for some time now.  To get the ball rolling, those who have signed up for the Sea of Thieves Insider Program will be invited to test these tools out in the weeks and months to come. Then later this year, we should see a wider public rollout.

We don’t know specific details on what features these servers will include, but they will likely be used for private tournaments to start off with. Perhaps at some point players may also get the ability to locally host for their friends but there is no news on that at this point.

Similarly to the Battlefield games, it is likely that there will be a private server rental system in place at launch.

KitGuru Says: We’ll have to wait and see how this turns out, but I’ll personally be hoping for hosting tools for friend groups that want to play both PvE and PvP in a closed server. Have many of you been playing Sea of Thieves recently? Are private servers something that you would be interested in?

While Microsoft’s annual fan convention X019 may be just a few hours away, industry insider Daniel Ahmad has given fans a small look at what to expect from the convention’s opening conference, which will take place later today at 8PM GMT. According to Ahmad, Microsoft will unveil a new IP coming from Obsidian Entertainment, as well as Rare, with “approx half a dozen titles scheduled to ship in 2020, prior to the Scarlett launch”.

When Microsoft advertised X019 as being its biggest ever, it seems they weren’t lying. Microsoft already announced that the convention would include “news from over 10 Xbox Game Studios titles”, “new game reveals”, “huge Xbox Game Pass news”, a “Project xCloud update” and “so much more”. It seems that at least two of those game reveals will be coming from Xbox Game Studios’ Rare and Obsidian Entertainment.

Rare is one of Microsoft’s most distinguished games studios, having developed games such as Donkey Kong Country, Battletoads, Killer Instinct, GoldenEye 007, Banjo-Kazooie, and Star Fox Adventures. The British Studio has most recently released Sea of Thieves, and is announced to be working on another Battletoads game. With updates to Sea of Thieves already promised to be at X019, it’ll be interesting to see what direction Rare chooses to go with its next-next game.

Obsidian Entertainment is known for having developed Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II, Fallout: New Vegas, South Park: The Stick of Truth, Pillars of Eternity, and most recently, The Outer Worlds. With The Outer Worlds releasing less than a month ago, and it having yet to come out on Switch, it’s surprising to hear that Obsidian Entertainment will be announcing a new IP at the conference. Nonetheless, it is exciting to see what Obsidian’s next project will be, especially as they have such a consistent track record of quality.

X019 looks to be holding true to Microsoft’s promise of being the “BIGGEST. INSIDE XBOX. EVER.” There isn’t long to wait now until both new games from Rare and Obsidian Entertainment, amongst many other things, are announced.

Microsoft have been on an acquisition spree in the last year, preparing itself for next gen. Eagle-eyed people on ResetEra are now speculating that Microsoft might be acquiring Playtonic Games, the studio consisting of ex-Rare devs, who worked on Yooka-Laylee. With the recent resurgence of Banjo-Kazooie in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, could the British studio be working on a new Banjo game? While Playtonic Games deny the speculation, all the evidence seems to say otherwise.

The speculation began when Playtonic games announced that an ex-Rare developer, Ed Bryan, would be joining Playtonic. Bryan had been a character designer at Rare, working on Banjo-Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64, and Viva Piñata. Following the announcement, Bryan tweeted “Well, I never really had any plans to use this again” posting a picture of a Microsoft branded bag (although the full name was cheekily obscured). This led to a fan asking about the bag, to which Bryan responded “It’s come out of retirement!”.

Further fuel was added to the fire when Gavin Price, the co-owner of Playtonic Games, updated his linkedin profile, detailing that 3 more games are in the works, with him saying that “the #5 one too which is the one I always thought would be game #1”. As Playtonic Games was created out of the desire to make a Banjo-Kazooie game, could game number 5 be a Banjo game?

Playtonic games also registered a new company back in September named “PLAYTONIC GAMES DEVELOPMENT LIMITED”, perhaps being the new name under Xbox Game Studios. X019 is coming up on the 14th of November, which is Xbox’s “annual global celebration of all things Xbox”. At last year’s X018, Xbox announced the acquisition of Obsidian Entertainment, and inXile Entertainment. This year’s X019 will be taking place in London, and as Playtonic is a British studio, the stars seem to be aligning for an X019 announcement.

After the speculation began to spread, Playtonic Games took to Twitter in an attempt to curb the speculation. The developers said “we aren't working on a new Banjo-Kazooie game and we remain an independent studio”. While the statement seems rather definitive, Playtonic provided no explanations to refute the various points of evidence that was levied towards the idea.

Furthermore, this wouldn't be the first time a game company has outright denied a rumour, only for it to later be revealed to have been true, with their defence being that their statement technically was true. With that logic in mind, while Playtonic may not currently be working on a Banjo-Kazooie game and are currently an independent studio, things may change in the near or distant future.
