Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the best selling games of all time, with over 60 million copies sold since its release in 2018. Despite this, Rockstar Games has shown relatively little post-launch support for the title. Fortunately, the team have released a surprise update with notable fixes and some improvements.

Red Dead Redemption 2’s Title Update 1.32 is mostly focused on fixing issues and improving stability, including a long-time bug related to the stables in Red Dead Online.

That said, Rockstar have added a few quality-of-life features such as defaulting your mic to ‘off’ in Red Dead Online alongside improvements to playing offline.

By far the biggest change comes with the update of AMD’s FSR technology – having been upgraded to version 2.2 for increased visual clarity while maintaining framerates. Additionally, RDR2 now supports HDR10+ for Gaming; a welcome addition given the title’s poor HDR implementation at launch.

While it seems like Rockstar have no plans to revamp its online mode nor update the console versions to 60fps, it is nice to see the team addressing at least some of the game’s remaining issues.

For more than a decade now, Grand Theft Auto 5 has continued to sell like hotcakes, with the now-two-generation-old title consistently pushing further and further towards the 200 million mark. It seems as though the day is near, with Rockstar announcing that GTA V has now sold over 195 million copies.

As part of the company’s most recent fiscal report, Take-Two Interactive released updated sales stats for both GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2. As shared by industry analyst ‘DomsPlaying’ Grand Theft auto V has once again sold-in an additional 5 million copies since last quarter, putting the title dangerously close to 200 million copies sold (currently sitting at 195 million).

Assuming the game’s current trajectory continues, GTA V will likely have sold over 200 million copies by the time Take-Two Interactive release their next fiscal report.

Of course, though nowhere near as big a GTA, 2018’s Red Dead Redemption continues to climb up the video game best-sellers list, shifting an additional 4 million copies since last quarter to bring its total sales to 61 million. This makes RDR2 officially the 7th best-selling game of all time, surpassing the NES classic Super Mario Bros. (58 million) – and landing right underneath Mario Kart 8 + Deluxe (69.04 million).

Considering the fact that Grand Theft Auto VI is still quite a ways away – coming some time in 2025 – it's entirely possible that the game manages to sell over 225 million copies by the time its long-awaited sequel finally comes out. We will have to wait and see.

Dan Houser left Rockstar after the release of Red Dead Redemption 2 and revealed his new game studio, Absurd Ventures, this year. Now, two of Rockstar's most credited creatives are joining him.

As reported by Begeek, former Vice President of writing at Rockstar Games, Michael Unsworth, and former writer and producer, Lazlow Jones, have now joined Dan Houser at Absurd Ventures.

Unsworth has credits writing on Midnight Club: Los Angeles, L.A. Noire, Max Payne 3, GTA 4, GTA 5, as well as both Red Dead Redemption titles. He joins Absurd Ventures as the company's lead on story and creative management. Jones, who worked on every GTA title since GTA 3, the Red Dead Redemption games, as well as titles like L.A. Noire and Max Payne 3.

This news follows on from the revealing of two newly filed trademarks from Absurd Ventures, one for a project called “American Caper” and another called “A Better Life”. Neither project has been officially announced yet, so very little is publicly known about them. However, the trademark filings do list them under the “downloadable computer software” category, pointing towards both being video games, potentially with a mobile companion app of sorts.

In the future, Absurd Ventures will expand into multimedia projects and already seems to have ambitions of making a TV show.

When Red Dead Redemption Remastered dropped for PlayStation and Switch consoles, Rockstar caught some flack for the lack of 60FPS mode, particularly when the game runs on PS5. With the latest update, this may have been fixed.

As spotted by Push Square, Patch 1.03 for Red Dead Redemption Remastered has rolled out, promising “general bug fixes, stability fixes and improvements”. The patch holds one secret new feature – 60FPS gameplay, but only when playing the PS4 version on a PS5 through backwards compatibility.

As Rockstar did not officially announce 60FPS support with the patch notes, it is unclear if this was supposed to make its way into the game yet, or if 60FPS gameplay will come to other platforms as well.

Red Dead Redemption Remastered launched earlier this year but only for PS4 and Switch. The game is still playable on Xbox Series X/S via backwards compatibility with the Xbox 360 version. A PC release is still non-existent.

KitGuru Says: Given how old Red Dead Redemption is, I wouldn't be surprised if 60FPS was viable on the Switch too. However, the real prize would be a PC version, as PC-only gamers have never had the opportunity to play the original game.

The Nintendo Switch recently received a port of 2011’s Red Dead Redemption, offering a mostly uncompromised experience for those who wish to re-live the story of John Marston in a portable form. In a surprising move, it seems as though Rockstar might be planning to also bring its sequel/prequel ‘RDR2’ to Nintendo’s platform – at least according to the Brazilian ratings board.

As reported by the editor-in-chief of Universo Nintendo ‘Felipe’, the Brazilian game ratings board published a listing of Red Dead Redemption 2 for the Nintendo Switch – implying that the multi-award-winning open world title could find its way onto Nintendo’s handheld hybrid.

Few additional details were shared, however Felipe did confirm that the listing pertains to a native version of the game, as opposed to some sort of cloud-reliant experience. If this is indeed the case, it will be highly curious to see how the team have managed to get the impressively detailed and dense world of Red Dead Redemption 2 to perform well on Nintendo’s ageing hardware.

This should all be taken with a pinch of salt for now, however with the recent FTC leak indicating that we might be getting a remaster of RDR2 for current-gen consoles, it is possible that Rockstar are planning some sort of coordinated release across all three platforms.

That said, RDR2 still remains one of the best looking open world titles despite being on now-last-gen devices, and so it would be highly interesting to see how the team would manage to port it over to the Switch in an acceptable manner. We will have to wait and see whether this ultimately pans out.

As part of a bit of an oopsie by the FTC, many private documents shared by Microsoft to the FTC have now leaked, revealing all sorts of information on new Xbox consoles, unannounced games and a whole lot more. This leak has not only affected Microsoft but also its partners, as one of the documents seems to suggest that a current-gen port of Red Dead Redemption 2 is on its way.

As archived by ResetEra user ‘Angie’, one of the MANY leaked Microsoft documents has a listing for a version of Red Dead Redemption 2 set to arrive on 9th-gen platforms (aka Xbox Series X|S and PS5). This remaster/port was seemingly planned to arrive sometime during Q2 of Fiscal Year 2023.

This has of course now come and gone with no mention of a current-gen release for Red Dead Redemption 2, meaning either that it has been delayed or perhaps even cancelled outright.

Getting a current-gen upgrade for Red Dead 2 has undoubtedly been one of the most requested ports by owners of these 9th-gen platforms – especially as the game already looks so good on last-gen hardware. Hopefully a native current-gen release is announced sooner rather than later, but we will simply have to wait and see.

Rockstar's next major game will be none other than Grand Theft Auto 6. However, that doesn't mean the studio's other esteemed franchises will be left behind. A recent leak claims that Red Dead Redemption 3 will be coming up.

Take-Two CEO, Strauss Zelnick already confirmed that he believes Red Dead Redemption should continue in an interview back in 2021, likening Rockstar's franchises to entertainment behemoths like James Bond. However, in that same interview, he also stressed the company's desire to make each major Rockstar game feel like a special event, which ultimately means ‘resting' titles for a period of time to build up demand for a sequel.

Film leaker MyTimeToShineH recently claimed that Hogwarts Legacy 2 is on the way and they have also made the claim that Red Dead Redemption 3 is “officially in the works“. This person does have a track record for film leaks but is not an established games leaker, so we aren't sure how reliable their sources are in this space.

With that said, Red Dead Redemption 2 was a huge success, although its online multiplayer component did not see the same level of support as GTA Online, which continues to be very popular now ten years later. If a third Red Dead Redemption game is made, it will be interesting to see if we go further back in time to shed light on events leading up to Red Dead Redemption 2, or if we see a whole new cast of characters.

Rockstar's latest Red Dead Redemption port announcement has been met with disappointment. Rather than even offering a basic remaster of the game, Rockstar is simply re-releasing the old version of the game, packaged with Undead Nightmare, for PS4 and Nintendo Switch. The $50 price tag for a 13-year-old game has raised plenty of eyebrows, but Take-Two is standing firm, claiming the price is “great value”.

In an interview with IGN, Take-Two CEO, Strauss Zelnick, addressed criticism of the re-release's price tag, stating that they believe it to be “commercially accurate”. He then adds that as the game includes the Undead Nightmare content, it is actually “great value for consumers”.

This doesn't take into account that the backwards-compatible Xbox 360 version has been available to Xbox gamers for much cheaper than this for quite some time. It is also disappointing to see that the game is still not coming to PC, even after the success of Red Dead Redemption 2 on the platform.

While there is no native PS5 release coming for Red Dead Redemption, the game can be played via backwards compatibility.

KitGuru Says: Do you agree that a freshly raised price for a decade-old game is good value?  For the console versions I'm not convinced, but a PC release would have been tempting even at this price, as we could count on the modding community to release their own graphical upgrades and possibly even re-enable multiplayer features.

In recent weeks there has been evidence of an impending Red Dead Redemption-related announcement from Rockstar. Many unfortunately gave the studio a bit too much credit in thinking that this would be a remaster. Red Dead Redemption is not being remastered, but it is coming out again, this time for Nintendo Switch and ‘modern PlayStation consoles', skipping PC and Xbox.

Red Dead Redemption and its Undead Nightmare Expansion will be packaged together and sold for Nintendo Switch and PS4 (PS5 via backwards compatibility). The game will not feature any graphical or performance updates, so it will continue to run at 30FPS and won't look much better beyond what was already possible.

One of the reasons this may be skipping Xbox is due to the backwards-compatible version already being available. On an Xbox Series X, you can even resolution boost the game to a sharp 4K, which will likely end up looking better than this PS4/Switch re-release.

While skipping Xbox can be forgiven in this case, skipping PC is absolutely baffling. The original version didn't come to PC but the demand for its release has only grown in the years following Red Dead Redemption 2. Many want to experience the story for the first time and are continuing to be cut off.

The PS4/Switch version price also has a pretty big question mark around it. As it stands, Rockstar wants to charge $50 for a 13-year old game, with no actual remastered features. Even for the Switch version, the only brand new platform now getting the game, I'd be wary of paying that much.

KitGuru Says: This is a highly underwhelming announcement but ultimately, this is why we should always be cautious of rumours. Still, you'd think that a company with Rockstar's financial resources could do far more than this.

Last week, an update to the Rockstar website revealed evidence that a Red Dead Redemption-related announcement was incoming. Dataminers have been digging through the changes for days and it would seem that the upcoming Red Dead Redemption re-release may also come to Nintendo Switch.

South Korea's Game Rating and Administration Committee recently rated a new version of Red Dead Redemption. This is a new listing, which could hint at a re-release, or perhaps even a remaster. The same ratings board also recently let slip the existence of a Quake 2 remaster.

The image above is a newly created Red Dead Redemption logo found on the Rockstar website, as discovered by Rockstar serial leaker and dataminer, Tez2. Tez also found that a new Nintendo Switch logo has been added to the list of platform buttons displayed on the site for the game. While this isn't confirmation that the game will release on Nintendo Switch, it is a good indication that the Switch is in Rockstar's plans for remasters. Previously, GTA: The Definitive Edition Trilogy also released on Switch.

Not everything found in a datamine leads to an announcement. Previously, references to Oculus VR were found in the code for Red Dead Redemption 2 but no official VR support ever came to the game.

The codename for this new version of Red Dead Redemption is said to be “RDR1RSP”, which broken down, could be read as Red Dead Redemption 1 Remaster (or Remake), with the SP standing for Single Player, indicating that multiplayer features present in the original game won't be here.

Rockstar is typically very secretive but the company has been making a bigger push for remasters recently. Last year, we saw GTA V Expanded and Enhanced for new-gen consoles, adding features like ray-tracing and 4K resolution support. Rockstar also released the GTA Definitive Edition trilogy, revamping GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas in one package, although the Definitive Edition label did end up turning into a meme, as each of those remasters released in rough shape with plenty of bugs.

Previously, modders attempted to recreate Red Dead Redemption 1 using Red Dead Redemption 2 as the base. Unfortunately, those projects were shut down by Rockstar's legal team. Perhaps this was due to the fact that an official remaster was in the works.

There have been rumours of a Red Dead Redemption remaster circulating for years but everything seems to be coming to a head in recent months. Shortly after a new version of Red Dead Redemption was rated, Rockstar's website has now been updated and sleuths have discovered more references hinting at a new version of the game.

South Korea's Game Rating and Administration Committee recently rated a new version of Red Dead Redemption. This is a new listing, which could hint at a re-release, or perhaps even a remaster. The same ratings board also recently let slip the existence of a Quake 2 remaster. Last year, the same board accurately confirmed the incoming release of Quake Remastered shortly before Bethesda's QuakeCon event, so there is a decent track record in place here.

The image above is a newly created Red Dead Redemption logo found on the Rockstar website, which was updated mere hours ago. As pointed out by Rockstar serial leaker and dataminer, Tez2, the logo introduces a new title for the game “Rockstar Games Presents Red Dead Redemption”, further indicating that a new version of this game is due to be released soon. While Rockstar Games Presents branding has been present on promotional material in the past, the new website update lists this as a separate version from the original release.

The codename reads as “RDR1RSP”, which broken down, could be read as Red Dead Redemption 1 Remaster (or Remake), with the SP standing for Single Player, indicating that multiplayer features present in the original game won't be here, instead funnelling players towards Red Dead Redemption Online, which is available as a standalone product, or included with purchases of Red Dead Redemption 2.

Due to this, Rockstar may be shifting its branding to add ‘Rockstar Games Presents' to the title, rather than reusing Definitive Edition.

Previously, modders attempted to recreate Red Dead Redemption 1 using Red Dead Redemption 2 as the base. Unfortunately, those projects were shut down by Rockstar's legal team. If Red Dead Redemption is getting a remaster, we would hope that Rockstar's plans include a PC version, as the original game was exclusive to Xbox 360 and PS3.

KitGuru Says: With Red Dead Redemption 2 technically being a prequel, a remake of Red Dead Redemption 1 with comparable graphics to RDR2 would be more than welcome by fans. Many got into the series for the first time with RDR2, so seeing the events that play out afterwards with polished up graphics would be very satisfying.

In the past week a rumour has sprung up claiming that Take-Two Interactive is planning to remaster 2011’s open-world cowboy simulator Red Dead Redemption. Following these leaks, Take-Two themselves have added fuel to the fire by confirming that they are working on multiple re-releases.

As reported by the Rockstar Games-focused Twitter page ‘videotechx’, during Take-Two’s most recent earnings call, the holding company revealed their plans for the ongoing 2024 Fiscal year (ending March 2024).

According to Take-Two, they plan on releasing 16 titles during the next Fiscal year. Some of the games were named (such as LEGO 2K Drive), however more interestingly, the company also revealed that two re-releases are in the works, saying:

“We also plan to launch 2 new iterations of previously-released titles, and 3 independent titles, including Private Division’s planned May 23rd release of After Us from Piccolo Studio.”

As mentioned, recent rumours have claimed that a remaster of Red Dead Redemption 1 is in the works. Considering the fact that the game never got a PC release nor an 8th-gen remaster, RDR is ripe for re-releasing. It will be interesting to see what the second re-release is planned to be – Red Dead Redemption 2 perhaps?

It would seem that Rockstar has something cooking up for Red Dead Redemption fans. No, Red Dead Redemption 2 Online isn't suddenly going to make a resurgence, but recent game rating submissions hint at a new version of the original Red Dead Redemption.

South Korea's Game Rating and Administration Committee has recently rated a new version of Red Dead Redemption. This is a new listing, which could hint at a re-release, or perhaps even a remaster. The same ratings board also recently let slip the existence of a Quake 2 remaster.

Rockstar is typically very secretive but the company has been making a bigger push for remasters recently. Last year, we saw GTA V Expanded and Enhanced for new-gen consoles, adding features like ray-tracing and 4K resolution support. Rockstar also released the GTA Definitive Edition trilogy, revamping GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas in one package.

KitGuru Says: This might not be as exciting as a remaster. This could be something entirely out of left field, like a Red Dead Redemption 1 Switch port. With that in mind, don't get too excited just yet. If the rating submission was legitimate, we should have an official announcement within the next few months.

It seems as though Rockstar’s games have reached a level of mainstream which pretty much guarantees that the developer’s title will be a smash commercial hit. Despite not having the same cache and history as Grand Theft Auto, Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2 has now officially sold over 50 million copies.

Take Two recently held an investor presentation where the holding company revealed that 2018’s Red Dead Redemption 2 has finally sold over 50 million copies, making it the 8th best-selling game of all time. In total, the Red Dead Redemption franchise has now sold a total of 70 million copies – an impressive feat for a series consisting of just two games.

Of course, the juggernaut known as GTA V has continued to sell like hotcakes, with the 2013 title now having officially sold over 175 million units – maintaining its second place position on the game sales podium (only behind Minecraft’s mammoth sales of 238 million copies).

With Grand Theft Auto VI still a ways away, it will be interesting to see whether GTA V manages to hit 200 million units by the time its sequel is finally released. Furthermore, with a 3rd Red Dead Redemption game nowhere in sight, it’s entirely possible and probable that RDR2 will end its life as a top 5 best-selling game of all time. We will have to wait and see.

Red Dead Redemption is one of the biggest games from the 7th generation of consoles to not get a remaster in any true form. In fact, with the game never officially coming to PC, Red Dead Redemption has been mostly locked to old hardware. Unfortunately, the only way to Play Red Dead on modern PlayStation consoles – via PS+ streaming – is no longer an option.

As reported by the Rockstar-focused ‘videotech_’ Red Dead Redemption has been removed from PlayStation Plus streaming 6 years after it was first added all the way back in 2016.

While no reason was given for its removal, this latest move means that there is no longer any way to play the 2010 Rockstar classic on modern PlayStation systems due to the PS4 and PS5’s lack of true backwards compatibility with PlayStation 3.

As of now, the only way to officially play Red Dead Redemption on a modern system is through Xbox’s backwards compatibility as the game never came to PC.

Rockstar’s abandonment of the first Red Dead Redemption title is disappointing and while it is good that Xbox players are able to still experience the much-loved title, with each passing year the game is getting less and less accessible. Hopefully Rockstar Games eventually brings the title to modern systems and PC.

Recently we reported that Rockstar Games had plans to remaster Grand Theft Auto IV as well as the original Red Dead Redemption. Unfortunately, these plans were dropped following the less-than-stellar release of the GTA Trilogy: The Definitive Edition. Unfortunately, it seems as though a PS5 / Series X port of Red Dead Redemption 2 has also been canned.

This report comes from Tez2, the original insider who leaked the fact that Rockstar was no longer developing remasters of GTA IV and Red Dead Redemption. Following that initial claim, one user asked “I guess it’s safe to say that Red Dead Redemption II will never get a PS5/Xbox Series X/S release either?” to which Tez2 responded:

“Yes. I've heard about those a long time ago. As well as their plan to come up with an Enhanced Rockstar Editor. All cancelled/halted by now.”

Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the best looking games to release on 8th-gen consoles, and would have undoubtedly flourished on PS5 and Xbox Series X. It is a shame to see the response to Rockstar’s own shoddy ports be the reason as to why they are refusing to bring forward any of their other older titles instead of simply making better ports.

Rockstar-focused reporter, Tez, recently revealed that the studio has scrapped plans for future remasters in an effort to allocate more resources to Grand Theft Auto VI. Other sources have since come forward to confirm this, adding that Rockstar doesn't want a repeat of the GTA Trilogy.

Rockstar apparently had plans to remaster Grand Theft Auto IV and Red Dead Redemption, presumably to release ahead of Grand Theft Auto VI. However, due to the botched release of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition, those plans have now been cancelled, as confirmed by an additional Kotaku source.

It seems that Rockstar doesn't want to dedicate in-house resources to remasters while GTA 6 is in full production, and there is no immediately suitable studio to outsource these projects to either.

Rockstar confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 is in development earlier this year, but did not announce launch platforms or a targeted release date. However, rumours claim that the game is currently targeting a 2024 release.

KitGuru Says: Not getting a Red Dead Redemption remaster is particularly disappointing, especially because of the lack of PC release for that game. Still, doubling down and focusing all efforts on finishing GTA 6 does seem like the right move here.

While Red Dead Redemption 2 did make it onto PC as well as consoles, the original Red Dead Redemption continues to be a console exclusive to this day. That could be changing soon though, as sources claim that a remaster is now in development.

According to YouTuber ‘Rockstar Mag‘, Red Dead Redemption is getting remastered for PC and consoles, likely including Xbox One and PS4, as well as next-gen consoles like the Xbox Series X/S and PS5.

So far, the closest thing we've got to a Red Dead Redemption remaster is the backwards compatible version of the game on Xbox, which runs at 4K resolution but does not make any further graphical enhancements or improve the game's frame rate. Currently, Rockstar is also remastering other titles in its backlog, including GTA III, GTA San Andreas and GTA Vice City.

This is not the first time that there have been rumours of a Red Dead Redemption remaster. Back when Red Dead Redemption 2 came out, modders began exploring re-creating the original game using the sequel as a base, but Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two, quickly shut down those efforts.

When it comes to memorable soundtracks, Rockstar Games is one developer whose music comes to mind. The GTA and Read Dead Redemption studio has been celebrated in the past for its music, both original and licensed. Now the studio has announced that it is opening its own record label “CircoLoco Records,” the first EP of which will be out this June.

Making the announcement on its website, Rockstar Games said “Music has always been a fundamental part of Rockstar Games — from the championing of underground artists and scenes across our titles, to the meticulously curated radio stations of the Grand Theft Auto series and the introduction of fully-realized digital nightclubs in Grand Theft Auto Online with the After Hours update, as well as expanding the possibilities for in-game social spaces and music discovery with the release of The Cayo Perico Heist.”

Explaining the next step in this journey, they revealed that “Now, we’re further fusing the physical and digital worlds of entertainment by teaming with CircoLoco — creators of some of the world’s biggest and most influential real world parties and one of the most recognized brands in modern dance music — to create a brand-new record label, CircoLoco Records.”

The first project from the label, a compilation album titled ‘Monday dreamin’ is currently in development, with an EP set to release next month – the first track of which can be listened to right now.

Creating their own record label is an interesting move for Rockstar Games. With how prevalent music is within their titles, it will be interesting to see whether future games from the studio will include music from the label.

Over the past twenty years, video games have advanced graphically at a rapid rate, going from basic 3D polygonal shapes to extremely intricate environments and characters. As we embark on a new generation of consoles, this advancement will only increase further. According to the CEO of Take-Two, the video games industry is only 10 years away from complete photorealism.

As reported by Gamesindustry.biz, Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two Interactive, spoke at the UBS Global TMT Virtual Conference, where he shared his thoughts on the future of gaming. According to Zelnick, in the next 10 years “I think what you're going to see is technology will allow our creative folks to do things they've never been able to do before, including make games that look exactly like live-action.”

Of course, over the past generation, especially near the end, we saw a number of titles released with incredibly high fidelity graphics and animations, including The Last of Us Part II, and Take-Two’s own Red Dead Redemption 2. Zelnick does acknowledge this, saying “Some of what we do now looks a lot like live-action, but it's still animation,” but added that “In 10 years, you'll have the option if you want to make things that look completely realistic, all done inside a computer, never mind all the other advances technology will enable.”

With every new generation, it feels as though graphics have peaked. Indeed there was a time when Mario’s face rendered in 3D on the Nintendo 64 was the peak of technology. Of course, technology evolves and improves, and so too will the products themselves. Though a number of games already appear photorealistic in the eyes of many, it’ll be interesting to see how games evolve in the next 10 years, and if Arthur Morgan will appear as cartoony as Mario when looking back.

KitGuru says: Do you care about graphics? Will games be photorealistic in the next 10 years? What is the best looking game out right now in your opinion? Let us know down below.

Each month, Microsoft expands the line-up of titles available on its game subscription service, Xbox Game Pass. While the console manufacturer previously announced which games would be joining the service for the month of August, Microsoft has now updated that list with even more titles – including Resident Evil 7 in early September.

Previously, we reported that Microsoft Flight Simulator, Battletoads, Tell Me Why Episode 1, Wasteland 3, and Crusader Kings III would all be coming to Game Pass during the latter half of August and early September. While that remains true, Microsoft has now announced 8 additional titles which will be joining the service.

The games in question are:

  • Spiritfarer (Console/PC) – 18/8
  • Crossing Souls (PC) – 20/8
  • Darksiders: Genesis (PC) – 20/8

  • Double Kick Heroes (Console/PC) – 27/8
  • Wasteland 3 (Console/PC) – 28/8

The original Red Dead Redemption never made its way over to PC but there was a fan-project attempting to make that happen. The Red Dead Redemption: Damned Enhancement Project aimed to not only overhaul the game’s visuals, but get the game running on PC via an emulator. Unfortunately, due to cease and desist requests from Take-Two, the project was cancelled back in September. The story doesn't end there though, as now, a full lawsuit has been filed against the project's creator.

The person behind the project is known as ‘DamnedDev' online. After being contacted by Take-Two and enduring ‘shady stuff' like private investigators and family members being contacted, the Red Dead Redemption: Damned Enhancement Project was shelved. Since then, as reported by TorrentFreak, Take-Two has filed a full lawsuit against a man named Johnathan Wyckoff and ten ‘John Does', whose identities remain unknown for the time being.

In the filing, Take-Two states that it “brings this action to maintain control over its world-famous video games in the face of Wyckoff's publicly stated intent to distribute unauthorised software files that would dramatically change the content of Take-Two's video games”.

“Those unauthorised changes include but are not limited to importing the entire game map of 2010’s Red Dead Redemption into the 2018 game Red Dead Redemption II, enhancing graphics and visuals in Take-Two’s Red Dead Redemption game, and allowing players to play an enhanced version of the game on personal computer (‘PCs’), a platform for which Take-Two itself has not yet released the Read Dead Redemption game.”

By doing this, the people named in the suit are accused of breaching Take-Two's intellectual property rights and user license agreements. There are two key mods that Take-Two has issues with, one of them being the Red Dead Redemption: Damned Enhancement Project, which would use emulation and modifications to get Red Dead Redemption 1 running on PC. The second issue is the ‘RDRII Project', which aimed to port the full Red Dead Redemption 1 map into the PC version of Red Dead Redemption 2.

While Take-Two doesn't necessarily intend to release an official PC version of Red Dead Redemption, or a future DLC that adds the first game's map to the new game, these mods would ‘destroy the market' for an official version from Take-Two.

We will have to wait and see what happens next but for now, it is safe to assume that both planned mods are now cancelled for good and won't be picked up again.

KitGuru Says: Take-Two is one of the few publishers that will often go after modders over ‘remakes' or projects that completely overhaul existing games. There is the chance that someone else will pick up these mod ideas down the line, but given Take-Two's legal habits, we wouldn't recommend it.

Bug bounty programs are fairly common in the tech world, but it is rarer to see game developers participating. With GTA Online, Rockstar began a bug bounty program calling on white hat hackers and security sleuths to dig out reproducible instances of false positive bans. Now, the program is being extended to cover a wider range of vulnerabilities across software on more platforms, including Red Dead Online for PC.

The bug bounty program is available through HackerOne and offers payouts up to $10,000 for those that can identify vulnerabilities across multiplatform versions of Grand Theft Auto V, GTA Online, Red Dead Redemption 2, Red Dead Online, the iFruit mobile app and the Red Dead Redemption 2 Companion app.

The minimum bounty payout is set at $150 and the program itself is private, so you have to be a current active HackerOne contributor and go through an enrolment process, with Rockstar approving individual applications. You can view Rockstar's HackerOne ‘thanks' list to see the sort of payouts and bugs that previous members have reported.

The bounty program is likely going to stay up for a long time as Rockstar continues to support GTA Online and looks to keep Red Dead Online fresh with new content while we await the next big game release.

KitGuru Says: Valve is another notable developer that actively runs bug bounty programs, shelling out decent sums of money to those who can find vulnerabilities in multiplayer games in addition to Steam. Perhaps at some point the Rockstar Games Launcher will also be part of the bug bounty program but for now, the focus is mostly on individual games and mobile apps.

Rockstar recently released its first trailer showcasing Red Dead Redemption 2 running on PC.

The 1 minute long trailer focuses on the environment and atmosphere, shying away from any story related spoilers. The trailer is available to watch in 4K at 60fps, and illustrates many of the improvements arriving with the upcoming PC port.

Such enhancements include: increased draw distances; higher quality global illumination and ambient occlusion; higher quality snow trails; improved reflections; tessellated tree textures; and higher quality textures and resolutions all around.

The PC port will also be bringing with it a host of new content. Included are 3 new Bounty Hunter missions, 2 new Gang Hideouts, new weapons (in story mode), 2 new Treasure Maps, new horses, 5 new trinkets, and a new mission titled “To The Ends of The Earth”.

Rockstar have also promised support for multi-monitor setups, ultra widescreen support, and of course, 4K60fps+. The full PC requirements are available to read here.

Red Dead Redemption 2 will be arriving to PC on the 5th of November. It will be available on Rockstar’s own recently released ‘Rockstar Games Launcher’ as well as the Epic Games Store, among others. If you preorder the game from their own store by the 22nd of October however, you’ll receive “special bonuses” including “two free classic Rockstar Games PC titles” and a free upgrade to the premium edition of the game.

Red Dead Redemption 2 won’t launch concurrently on Steam, with its release date being pushed back to some time in December. No matter which launcher you use, the game will undoubtedly be worth the wait, as it is one of the most critically acclaimed games this generation, if not of all time.

KitGuru says: Have you been patiently waiting for Red Dead Redemption 2 to finally release on PC, or did you settle for the PS4/XBOX One Version? Let us know down below.

The original Red Dead Redemption never made its way over to PC but there was a fan-project attempting to make that happen. The Red Dead Redemption: Damned Enhancement Project aimed to not only overhaul the game's visuals, but get the game running on PC via an emulator. Unfortunately, the project will no longer see the light of day, as Take-Two's lawyers have gotten involved.

Some publishers are quite heavy-handed when it comes to protecting IP. Take-Two is one of them, often using private investigators to track down the makers of fan-made projects and coerce them into quitting, even if these projects sit in a legal grey area, such as emulation. This is unfortunately what has happened to DamnedDev, who has cancelled the Red Dead Redemption enhancement project.

In an update post to the project page, DamnedDev confirms that a video will be coming soon to explain the full situation. In an email to PCGamer, a bit more insight was offered, confirming that Take-Two legal reps sent letters requesting that the project be stopped.

The project is considered a mod to the original game, which shouldn't violate the EULA agreement or any laws. DamnedDev is hoping to change Take-Two's mind but isn't particularly happy with how the situation has gone down, claiming that the publisher did “shady stuff” to get his private information and contacted members of his family. This included accessing his real name, address, telephone number and even ‘private emails'.

The allegations here are similar to what we heard from SupMatto, who was tracked down by Take-Two during an investigation into Borderlands 3 leaks.

KitGuru Says: This isn't the first time that Take-Two has been accused of implementing questionable bullying tactics to end fan projects or silence leaks. Unfortunately, we don't have direct proof right now but it sounds like there is much more worth digging into here.

At E3 earlier this year, Microsoft invested heavily in its future by adding five studios to its first party line-up. While most of these were acquisitions, one studio, ‘The Initiative', is being built from the ground up with the goal of securing top-talent from across the industry. The first batch of hires have been revealed, with this new studio gaining the producer of God of War (2018), the lead writer on Red Dead Redemption and several others.

Given that The Initiative is a brand new studio, it will be several years before we get any official announcements on what they might be working on. However, we can be sure that whatever it is, it is going to be very ambitious. Studio head, Darrell Gallagher posted on LinkedIn over the weekend, announcing some of the new members joining the team.

First up we have Brian Westergaard, who was a Lead Producer on Rise of the Tomb Raider and Senior Managing Producer on Sony's most recent God of War game. Next is Christian Cantamessa, who previously worked as the lead writer and designer on Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption. He also contributed his writing skills to WB's Shadow of War.

Daniel Neuburger is joining Microsoft's new studio and previously worked as a co-director on Tomb Raider and Rise of the Tomb Raider. Blake Fischer previously worked as Microsoft's Senior Director of Portfolio Planning and now has a new (unknown) role at The Initiative.

Finally, we have Annie Lohr, who will help recruit new talent to the studio after previously working at Riot, Respawn, Treyarch and EA. Lindsey Mcqueeney will be the studio's HR lead.

That's all of the information we have so far, but from the sounds of it, Microsoft's new studio is looking to create something big with a heavy focus on single-player story. Currently, The Initiative is still hiring for a Technical Director and a few other positions.

The Initiative isn't the only studio garnering talent either. Playground Games recently went on a hiring spree of its own for its rumoured Fable reboot.

KitGuru Says: Given that The Initiative is a brand new  studio and still hiring, we won't be seeing any official game announcements for quite some time. Still, this is a promising start.

With Red Dead Redemption 2 on the way later this year, there interest in the original game has sparked up again recently. Microsoft added Red Dead Redemption to its Xbox backwards compatibility program in 2016, but this week, the game received an update for Xbox One X, dramatically improving the game's resolution. Since Rockstar's western never made it to PC, this now appears to be the best way to play the game.

Red Dead Redemption launched on the Xbox 360 and PS3 way back in 2010 and even then, the game pushed last gen hardware to its limits. The Xbox 360 did manage to render the game at 720p, but the PS3 ended up running it at around the 640p mark. Aliasing and view distances are also glaring issues for anyone trying to go back and play the original game today. Fortunately, the Xbox One X patch clears a lot of that up, adding 4K support, which dramatically sharpens up the presentation. You can see the difference in a comparison video below, posted by ElAnalistaDeBits:

Aside from Red Dead Redemption 2, a few other Xbox 360 backwards compatible titles also received Xbox One X patches this week. This includes Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Sonic Generations, Portal, Darksiders and Gears of War 2.

Microsoft has also made another big push for original Xbox games getting backwards compatibility, with 19 new games set to head to Xbox One this month.

KitGuru Says: I switched to PC gaming around the time Red Dead Redemption first came out, so I didn't have a chance to play it. However, the Xbox One X patch seems to do a good job of cleaning up the visuals, so I may finally get around to trying it out. Did any of you play Red Dead Redemption back when it first launched? What do you think of the Xbox One X patch?

Since launching GTA Online, Rockstar has shut down a few fan-made mod projects and this week, it added another one to the list. Over the last few years, some modders have been working on recreating Red Dead Redemption in GTA V but the project came to an unceremonious end this week after the creators received a Cease and Desist letter from Rockstar's lawyers.

Screenshots of the project were posted online last month, showing Red Dead Redemption's world successfully ported over to the GTA V engine. Then, last Friday a full trailer for the upcoming mod was released. Unfortunately, this didn't just turn the heads of fans, it also caught the attention of Rockstar's lawyers.

In an update, this week, project leader ‘Mr Leisurewear' confirmed that Rockstar had been in touch, while also shutting down the project for good: “I know this is hard pill to swallow, but as you may have noticed we did get contacted, and we sadly have to say we are stopping this project”.

This isn't the first big fan project that Rockstar has shut down. Perhaps most notably, Rockstar shut down FiveM, which aimed to give fans the GTA V multiplayer many had hoped for, free of the limitations associated with GTA Online.

KitGuru Says: This isn't too surprising given Rockstar's track record with policing mods. It is unfortunate though, I would have been interested in giving this a go myself.

Red Dead Redemption was undoubtedly one of the best games to come out of the last generation of consoles but unfortunately, it never quite made it to PC. However, the rumour mill this week is claiming that PC gamers may finally get their chance, as Rockstar is apparently planning a Red Dead Redemption re-release, which would come to PC, Xbox One and PS4.

This is according to a source speaking with the Korean site, Game Focus. According to their source, a remastered version of the game is currently being localised for Asia, and may even be announced at the PlayStation Meeting on the 7th of September this week.

red.dead_.redemption.04.lg_-e1443458030248

There isn't much more information beyond that, but if this proves to be true, then we may end up with some official information in just two days time.

This isn't the first time we have heard of Red Dead Redemption returning, earlier this year various sources claimed that a sequel is on the way, the game's map even leaked (allegedly). Unfortunately, a sequel hasn't been announced just yet but a re-release of the first game could tide people over while work on the sequel wraps up. That, and it would also give PC players a chance to experience it.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: I missed out on Red Dead Redemption last generation but if the game were to come to PC finally, I would pick it up. Hopefully this rumour doesn't turn out to be false, after all, a lot of people would probably play through Red Dead again if given the chance on new platforms.

It looks like fans of the Red Dead series may have a new game to look forward to as Red Dead Redemption 2's map has leaked onto the web. There has been some murmurs about a new Red Dead game in recent months but reports this week claim that the new Red Dead game will be set before the events of Red Dead Redemption, which launched on the Xbox 360 and PS3 several years ago.

The map image was posted to NeoGAF by someone claiming to be in touch with people who have knowledge of the game and its development. Once the image was out there, TechRadar got in touch with its own sources, who claim that the leaked map is in-fact real and actually fairly recent.

At the bottom left of the map you can find the Great Plains, which is part of where the events of Red Dead Redemption were set. However, you will notice that there is no railway going through it, which could class as evidence pointing towards an earlier setting.

Rockstar has not officially announced Red Dead Redemption 2 at this time but if these leaks are accurate, then perhaps we will see something official at E3 this year.

KitGuru Says: We didn't get Red Dead Redemption on the PC but the game gained quite a few fans on console. Did any of you play through Red Dead Redemption? Would you like to see another game in the series?
