Back in May, the first trailer for the Sonic The Hedgehog live-action movie dropped, revealing a rather shocking, humanised design for the character. It didn't take long for criticisms to send the film creators back to the drawing board and now, there is a new trailer for the film featuring the new, much improved Sonic design.

Sonic The Hedgehog director, Jeff Fowler, explained back in May that fan feedback was being taken seriously after the first trailer, adding that the film would be delayed to give them a chance to fix the character. Now, the new trailer is out, with Sonic looking much more like himself:

So far, fan reactions seem to be overwhelmingly positive, with many tweeting about the design improvement and how the new trailer does a better job of expressing Sonic's various character traits.

Of course, it is still too soon to say whether or not the movie will be good but at the very least, fans seem to be back on board once again. Sonic the Hedgehog will release on the 14th of February 2020.

Back in March, Atari announced that it was delaying its crowdfunded VCS system in order to upgrade the processor to an undisclosed AMD Ryzen chip. Now, the company has unveiled its “production ready” final design, paying even more homage to the classic Atari 2600.

Atari’s modern reimagining of the firm’s classic foray in the console market has just become a lot more nostalgic, with a new floating design that raises the main body via the stand. In part, this decision was made due to its likeness to the original Atari 2600, further leaning on the company’s previous achievements, but practicality has been taken into consideration.

The dimension shift sees a slightly larger end product that allows for two of the four USBs to shift around to the front. This gives owners easier access when plugging in peripherals, while the back two USB ports remain dedicated to external storage. Unfortunately, this comes at the sacrifice of the previously promised rear SD card slot, which Atari now sees as “redundant” in comparison to USB sticks and reminds users that no modern device embeds the technology any more.

Although it remains unknown which AMD Ryzen chip will be embedded in the Atari VCS, the extra room from the larger housing is also set to bolster cooling. As well as reducing plastic, Atari has stripped back its four independent lights in favour of a lit up “Fuji” logo, which will communicate various alerts to the user such as when the system is powered on, pairing with an accessory, connecting to the internet and more.

These changes have not offset Atari’s latest release window, which should hopefully see the VCS launch later this year.

KitGuru Says: I can understand that some fans will remain sceptical given that Atari was set to release the VCS many designs ago, however it’s worth remembering that crowdfunding requires the company to design its device in public. Fortunately, its nostalgic, yet dated design means that the VCS either won’t be out of place or will always be out of place when it finally launches.

It’s a little late in the day for Microsoft to be thinking of revisions given that a pair of next-generation consoles are reportedly on the horizon, but that hasn’t stopped the company from capping off its 2018 by receiving the go-ahead on two controller patents. Despite the imagery showcasing the familiar Xbox One controller, it’s possible that this is our first indication of what to expect in Anaconda and Lockhart.

The patents were filed way back in June 2017, credited to inventors Aaron Schmitz, Gabriel Michael Rask Gassoway and one patent adding in Jonathan Shea Robinson. As usual for a technological patent, the filing is filled with jargon and terminology suited to cover all legal stances but seems to primarily pertain to the triggers found on the back of the Xbox One controller and the accuracy of their mechanical tension.

The patent describes a new motor system within each trigger, which can be used for different levels of force feedback (rumble), and a clutch system, which can be used for trigger locks, or to protect the triggers should the controller be dropped or roughly handled.

Given that the Xbox One Elite controller currently holds “flagship” status for Microsoft’s variety of pads in the wild, the use of the standard Xbox One controller makes me question whether or not this is simply a placeholder for the revised trigger technology. Any redesign hitting the standard controller is sure to come to the Elite variant. However, the chances of a redesigned Xbox One controller coming out now seems slim given that we are on the cusp of next-gen consoles.

It seems likely that these new controller patents are laying the groundwork for what we will see in a next-gen Xbox controller. The Xbox One controller already made a number of improvements over the Xbox 360 controller- which is one of the most popular gamepads of all time. With that in mind, further improvements may well end up being under the hood, as this patent describes, rather than a complete design change.

KitGuru Says: Microsoft could just surprise everyone with the release of a new Xbox One controller but I can’t see enhanced triggers being enough to entice purchases, especially with next-gen consoles heavily expected in 2020. If Microsoft brought out a new controller this year, would you buy one?

Microsoft has been pretty heavy handed with its efforts to bring its aging Skype application up to modern standards, forcing users to ditch the older interface in favour of a comprehensive redesign. Realising that Snapchat-like functionality is not what its user base wanted, Microsoft has announced that it will once again be reshaping its communications service by going back to basics.

2017’s overhaul introduced Capture and Highlights, with the former allowing users to access camera and editing features on the fly, while the latter displayed all that’s been captured in a single hub that friends can see and react to. This brought Skype more in line with Snapchat and the evolving features of Facebook and Instagram, however director of design Peter Skillman notes that “calling became harder” as a result and “Highlights didn’t resonate with a majority of users.”

Fortunately, 2018’s redesign sees Microsoft “take a step back and simplify,” introducing “simplified navigation,” streamlined contacts and a fresh look all while removing the clutter that almost no one uses. There is a particular emphasis on its mobile variant, given its lack of user interface (UI) space, however Skype’s desktop version is receiving a similar coat of paint.

By removing Highlights and Capture, mobile UI if free to centralise its navigation to three buttons at the bottom, dubbed “Chats, Calls, and Contacts,” while notifications sits in the top left. The desktop version connects to Skype legacy, allowing users to navigate through all four options in the top left of the window.

“Contacts isn’t a highly used entry point for most Skype customers,” according to data collected by Microsoft, but Skillman notes that it has been preserved and enhanced for those that continue to find it a “critical and safety mechanism to find people they may have otherwise forgotten in a long list of contacts.”

Image: New desktop contacts (left) and new simplified dark mode (right)

Users of the 2017 version of Skype have until September 30 to download all content uploaded to their Highlights before it will be lost forever. “We looked at how people use Skype apps, performing extensive testing across global markets and building prototypes to test new concepts,” says Skillman.

“While we have plenty of work left to do, we hope you find these changes simplify your experience and bring you closer to those who matter. We are listening to your feedback and are wholly committed to improving the Skype experience based on what you are telling us.”

KitGuru Says: While I’m not the biggest fan of Skype, or its continuously confusing amount of changes, I can appreciate that Microsoft has quite the task on its hands to keep up with modern competition. Do you still use Skype? What do you think of these new changes?

Mozilla, the foundation behind Firefox, not the browser itself, is looking to revamp its logo. That means ditching the red T-Rex head of yesteryear in favour of something new and it wants its community of users from around the world to help it decide. What's your preference?

The redesign idea was announced earlier this year, as well as the news that Mozilla had hired on the skills of British design firm, Johnson Banks, to develop a number of concepts, which would then be put to Mozilla fans for the final verdict (thanks Ars). Well now we have those designs and they range from retro, to dystopian.

jb_Mozilla_design_pres_edit_3.key jb_Mozilla_design_pres_edit_3.key

The designs are out there for all to see and Mozilla is soliciting feedback on them. Essentially, we're within the concepting/refinement period and with commentary from Mozilla fans, it hopes it can pick a logo and design style that fits in with the company's ethos and what it plans moving forward.

jb_Mozilla_design_pres_edit_3.key jb_Mozilla_design_pres_edit_3.key

Important considerations for those that want to throw in their ideas, should be how the logo will resonate around the world, does it have the potential to show off modern technology, is it scalable for a variety of products and would it make people rethink Mozilla?

jb_Mozilla_design_pres_edit_3.key

That last point may be the most important, as a redesigning of a logo is about doing that – changing the face of an organisation.

KitGuru Says: Do you think these designs help change the face of Mozilla? If I had any say, I'd probably opt for the last one. The unfolding box looks interesting and quite scalable.

Samsung is currently working on getting Android 6.0 Marshmallow up and running for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, though users of this year's flagship device may find more in store with this update. Samsung has apparently given its Android skin, Touchwiz, a bit of a redesign for the new version of Android, which will apparently hit Galaxy S6 devices in January.

Right now, the Marshmallow update is planned for a number of this year's devices, including the new Galaxy Note and Galaxy Edge+, which will apparently get the update as soon as this month, though this is unconfirmed at this point.

The new Marshmallow update will give the Galaxy S6 Camera app a new ‘Pro' mode, which will allow for more tweaks, including ISO adjustment, exposure, white balance and shutter speed.

The quick notification centre will also get some changes, with a new white background and blue text. The general user interface and things like app icons, will also have a ‘flatter' look, similarly to stock Android and iOS, according to the screenshots, found by TechTimes. Right now, the update is due out in January, though that is according to internal leaks and is subject to change.

KitGuru Says: Samsung's Galaxy flagships are usually pretty popular, so quite a few people will be waiting on the new Marshmallow update next year. Are many of you using one of this year's Galaxy devices? What do you think of TouchWiz? I used to hate it back on my Galaxy S3, though it has improved since then by the looks of it.

Netflix has started rolling out a major redesign to its own website for PC users. Up until now, the Netflix streaming site has stuck to a similar user interface since its launch, which didn't offer a super efficient browsing experience for those using a PC with a mouse or trackpad.

Now for the first time in four years, Netflix is redesigning its main site, with the changes rolling out to users currently. It isn't everywhere yet, for example, I don't have it myself but plenty of people do have it running now.

The new site looks similar to the app found on other platforms, including the PlayStation, smart TVs and the iPad. The PC and Xbox versions of the app were really the only two with big differences to other platforms. The new Netflix site has a focus on navigating through the selection of movies and TV shows quickly.

Now instead of sitting through a slow scrolling animation, clicking on the arrow at either side of a row will advance the selection forward, rather than making you wait. You will also get more information about shows while hovering your mouse over them, instead of clicking on to another screen entirely.

These changes should be viewable by everyone within two weeks.
