Welcome to KitGuru Games, a new weekly column going over the latest in gaming, from what we’ve been playing and impressions on the latest releases, to shining a light on interesting hidden gems. This week, I’ll be sharing my fresh thoughts on Resident Evil Village after finishing the game.

Do be warned that there are major story spoilers throughout. For spoiler free impressions and PC performance benchmarks, check out our previous coverage, HERE

Resident Evil Village is a genre-bending rollercoaster. The game starts out with all the tension and awe in the world, as Ethan’s daughter is kidnapped and you wake up in a mysterious village full of Lycans. Not before long, we’re confronted with this game’s group of bad guys, an adopted family spearheaded by Mother Miranda, a goddess-like figure in this village. Miranda has kidnapped Ethan’s daughter, Rose, and distributed her body in four flasks amongst her four lords, the first of which is Lady Dimitrescu, the extremely tall vampire we all remember from Village’s pre-launch marketing.

As much as I love Resident Evil Village as a whole, these first few hours of the game are what really stuck with me after finishing it. The tension when you escape capture and can begin exploring Dimitrescu Castle is palpable. Exploring the rooms, cellars, and dungeon areas with the looming threat of Lady Dimitrescu and her three vampire daughters is an experience unmatched in the rest of the game.

After leaving the castle, we are back in the Village, tasked with going to each of the other lords one by one to collect pieces of Rose. This Metroidvania loop of going to a level, taking down the boss and collecting the key to move on is satisfying but it also feels a bit like filler at times as there are few major plot reveals during this section. This swiftly changes by the time we get to Heisenberg’s factory, and it is from this point on that the game really starts to make a turn.

Heisenberg is immediately less of a threat compared to Dimitrescu, as we learn that he wants to bring Mother Miranda down himself and is not interested in killing Ethan. However, for reasons unknown, he does need Ethan’s daughter, Rose, in order to defeat her. This provides great reasons for the character of Ethan to be tense, but as a player, at this point I’m a Resident Evil Village veteran with a pretty good arsenal of upgraded weapons. Clearing enemies from a room is no longer the scary affair that it was a few hours earlier, which is a shame as this was the last ‘major’ boss level before heading on to Mother Miranda.

This is where Resident Evil Village transitions from a survival horror game into an action game. The last couple of hours, starting with the Heisenberg boss fight, is filled with set piece action and story twists. The deliberate pacing of the early game is truly gone and we are heading full speed to the end of the story. This is truly encapsulated in a sequence where you play as Chris Redfield, complete with a Call of Duty style tactical loadout that makes quick work of enemy hordes. Better yet, there is a scene where you get to call in an air strike on a castle.

In the end, we learn that Ethan has been dead since Resident Evil 7, after being murdered by Jack Baker, and has only been able to carry on due to being infected by the E-Virus. Mother Miranda was using Ethan and his daughter to obtain a substance called Mold, which can be used to essentially reanimate a human being. Miranda was hoping to revive her lost daughter, Eva, by doing all of this. Ethan blows the place up, stops Miranda and ends his journey, leaving us to pick things back up in Resident Evil 9.

Resident Evil Village suffers a little bit from the sophomore slump in my opinion. It wasn't able to keep up the suspense and tension for as long as Resident Evil 7 did. There are two reasons for this, the first being gameplay related. In Resident Evil Village, we have an in-game vendor buying your collectibles and selling weapon upgrades and bullets, making it much easier to overpower yourself for future parts of the game on standard difficulty.

The second reason is simply pacing, as there were too many plot-bending reveals in close proximity in the final parts of the game, making the ending as a whole come off as whacky. Perhaps the levels between Castle Dimitrescu and Heisenberg's Factory could have tied into the overarching plot a bit more to make the game seem less bottom-heavy.

Overall though, Resident Evil Village was a fantastic time and while the ending was a bit of a mindbender, it sets things up nicely for Resident Evil 9, which should act as a grand finale for the Winters trilogy.

KitGuru Says: If you're reading this, then hopefully you have also played and finished Resident Evil Village. Now that you've all heard from me, I'd love to know what you all thought of Resident Evil Village. Where does it rank in the series for you?

Capcom's highly anticipated Resident Evil Village is coming out in just over one month's time, which means it is time to start talking about beta dates and PC system requirements. In this instance, Capcom has geared the recommended PC system requirements towards 1080p gameplay at 60 frames per second.

We'll start off with the multiplayer beta for Re:Verse. While last year's Resident Evil 3 remake had a 4v1 style multiplayer mode, Resident Evil Village is going with simpler deathmatch multiplayer, putting four to six players against each other in a PvP shootout. The open beta for this will take place between the 8th and 11th of April.

As for PC system requirements for Resident Evil Village (the full game), those include:

Minimum:

  • OS: 64-bit Windows 10
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-7500 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 560
  • RAM: 8GB

Recommended:

  • OS: 64-bit Windows 10
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-8700 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 or AMD Radeon RX 5700
  • RAM: 16GB

Resident Evil Village is releasing on the 7th of May 2021, continuing the story of Ethan Winters and his wife Mia, who were both introduced in Resident Evil 7.

KitGuru Says: The last few years have been great for Resident Evil fans and hopefully RE: Village will continue that trend this year. Are many of you planning on picking this up?

Last night during AMD's RX 6700 XT reveal, we also got a small update on Resident Evil Village. AMD confirmed that the developers will be utilising both raytracing and AMD's FidelityFX features in the PC version.

In a tweet from the Radeon Twitter account, we also get a video demo showing off raytracing on AMD hardware in Resident Evil Village, although do be warned, Twitter's video compression distorts quality quite a bit.

While this was revealed as part of the Radeon RX 6700 XT announcement, AMD's recommended system requirements for this game do call for an RX 6800 XT if you want to switch raytracing on.

Resident Evil Village is currently set to release on the 7th of May. We'll be looking forward to seeing how it performs across a range of GPUs then. Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: No word on Nvidia GPU support for raytracing in Resident Evil Village, so there are some questions still to be answered. Are many of you looking forward to Resident Evil Village?

As we've previously reported, Capcom recently suffered a massive security breach, leading to a lot of data being stolen, including personal information for both employees and customers. That attack is now seemingly bringing fresh Resident Evil 8 leaks to the internet, some with major spoilers.

If you're looking forward to playing Resident Evil 8/Resident Evil Village in 2021 and want to go in unspoiled, then you'll want to tread lightly on social media or forums. As Eurogamer confirms, screenshots, marketing plans, cutscenes and story details for the game are now making their way around the internet.

We won't be posting the spoilers here, but they seem to be pretty major, particularly where story details are concerned. Hackers were able to get their hands on these details earlier this year via a ransomware attack on Capcom's internal systems.

As part of the breach, 350,000 personal information records were taken, in addition to information regarding Capcom's upcoming game release schedule, spanning through to the end of 2024.

KitGuru Says: Resident Evil Village is going to be one of the big games of 2021, so the fact that spoilers are already floating around is a real shame. Are many of you looking forward to this game?

Back in June, shortly after the announcement of Resident Evil Village, we learned that the developers were struggling to get the game running on current gen consoles, pushing Capcom to only announce the game for next-gen consoles. It has been assumed that the current-gen versions of the game have just been scrapped, but that may no longer be the case.

This week during the Tokyo Games Show, Capcom producer, Tsuyoshi Kanda, said that the team is still looking into bringing the game to Xbox One and PS4.

Here is the full quote: “While Resident Evil Village is being developed specifically for next-generation consoles and PC, we're looking into delivering the experience on Xbox One and PS4 as well. We're looking into it, but we can't make any promises. However, we will do our best in creating a top-tier survival horror experience on current generation consoles.”

Resident Evil 8/Resident Evil Village is currently set to release in 2021. The game takes place a few years after the events of Resident Evil VII and brings back fan-favourite character Chris Redfield.

KitGuru Says: Traditionally, big games remain cross-gen for the first year or so of a new console generation, but I wouldn't be surprised if that process sped up a bit this time around. Do you want Resident Evil 8 to come to current gen? Or would you be fine with it being next-gen and PC only?

While various leaks appear to have gotten a lot right about Resident Evil 8 prior to its reveal last week, there was one surprising detail we learned. The game is not cross-gen and will instead only release for PC, Xbox Series X and PS5. Initially, Capcom was working on an Xbox One and PS4 version, but it was apparently scrapped later down the line.

According to Dusk Golem, a Twitter account that has leaked Resident Evil details successfully in the past, gave some insight into why the game won't be coming to current generation consoles in a series of tweets:

The reasoning seems to be that limitations of current-gen hardware was becoming a bottleneck graphically, as time that could be spent making the next-gen versions look nicer was being spent trying to sort graphical issues, pop-in and pop-in on Xbox One and PS4.

Load times were another apparent issue, as Resident Evil Village has a lot of load zones and focuses more on exploration. The ageing HDDs of the Xbox One and PS4 may have introduced to many loading screens, breaking up the flow of the game.

At this point, Capcom has not confirmed that Xbox One or PS4 versions of RE 8 were in the works. The game has only been announced for PC, Xbox Series X and PS5 in 2021.

KitGuru Says: The RE Engine has been an excellent graphical showcase for Xbox One and PS4 but it does seem like perhaps it is time to focus more on newer hardware. The Xbox One and PS4 were not cutting edge when they came out in 2013, whereas the Xbox Series X and PS5 are looking much more promising in many areas.

Resident Evil 3: Remake is coming out this Friday, with reviews starting to come in, but there are already rumours about the eighth entry of the franchise set for release in 2021. According to these rumours, Resident Evil 8 will revolutionise the series, similar to what Resident Evil 7 did back in 2017.

As reported by AestheticGamer (via IGN), Resident Evil 8 will be a cross-gen title, scheduled for release in 2021, as other previous rumours have already reported. This insider also shared that the upcoming title started development back in late 2016, meaning that if the game releases at its scheduled date, it will have a 4-5 year development period.

Regarding Resident Evil 8's development, AestheticGamer stated that it's “very similar to the original Resident Evil 3, not the remake”. Additionally, the announcement of the game should be “really soon” and it will be the most unusual Resident Evil game ever released.

According to the insider, the game will be so different from previous releases that it will probably annoy fans once it gets revealed. From the game's internal testing at the studio, AestheticGamer concluded that it's a “high quality game”.

It seems that we still have some time to enjoy the latest release of Resident Evil series until these Resident Evil 8 rumours can be confirmed. Let's wait and see what the upcoming Resident Evil game is holding for us.

It has been three years since Resident Evil 7 came out and since then, Capcom has been keeping fans happy with remakes of classic games from the series. As we head towards the next generation of consoles though, expectations for Resident Evil 8 are rising and we may now have the first leaked details.

The YouTube channel ‘Residence of Evil' posted a video this week going over some alleged Resident Evil 8 information gathered from sources. Ethan will apparently return as the main protagonist but traditional zombies will return, Capcom may also be introducing Werewolves, which were first seen in the Resident Evil comic series.

Sticking with the new style introduced in Resident Evil 7, the sequel is said to continue using first-person gameplay. A new ‘stalker' enemy type is also said to be involved, as well as the return of Chris Redfield.

There is one more interesting point to take note of, as Capcom is apparently considering switching up the title and not just straight up calling this ‘Resident Evil 8', which could be an effort to create some separation from classic third-person Resident Evil and newer first-person titles.

KitGuru Says: With Resident Evil 3 Remake coming out this year, Capcom could be planning to announce the next big sequel for 2021, or possibly even a late 2020 launch to coincide with the new consoles coming out. Hopefully we'll hear more in the months to come, particularly as we approach E3.
