During WWDC earlier this week, Apple showcased a number of gaming-oriented upgrades for Mac and iOS devices, including the new Metal 3 API. This new API will also include a new upscaling technology – MetalFX Upscaling. This has already enabled some impressive results, with No Man's Sky coming to iPads and Resident Evil Village getting a dedicated Mac version.

Like Intel, AMD and Nvidia, Apple is also developing an upscaling technology. Named MetalFX Upscaling, this tech will use temporal antialiased (like DLSS 2.0 and FSR 2.0) and spatial (like FSR 1.0) upscaling techniques. Apple didn't share any results or demos using MetalFX Upscaling, but we should see it in action in the coming months.

Also, as part of the Metal 3 API, Apple is adding other improvements: fast resource loading (Apple's DirectStorage equivalent), offline shader compilation, mesh shaders, new ray-tracing features and Metal backend for PyTorch.

According to Apple, one of the first games to make use of Metal 3 API will be No Man's Sky, coming to iPad and Mac later this year. Capcom's Resident Evil Village will also be heading to Mac this year. As per Maseru Ijuin, Capcom's advanced technical research division manager, the Mac Studio will be able to run Resident Evil Village at 4K with high-quality graphics, while the MacBook Air will be able to run the game at 1080p resolution.

KitGuru says: It's nice to see Apple investing more in gaming. However, considering how far Windows and Linux have come in this area, Macs still have a long way to go to catch up.

Back in June, shortly after the announcement of Resident Evil Village, we learned that the developers were struggling to get the game running on current gen consoles, pushing Capcom to only announce the game for next-gen consoles. It has been assumed that the current-gen versions of the game have just been scrapped, but that may no longer be the case.

This week during the Tokyo Games Show, Capcom producer, Tsuyoshi Kanda, said that the team is still looking into bringing the game to Xbox One and PS4.

Here is the full quote: “While Resident Evil Village is being developed specifically for next-generation consoles and PC, we're looking into delivering the experience on Xbox One and PS4 as well. We're looking into it, but we can't make any promises. However, we will do our best in creating a top-tier survival horror experience on current generation consoles.”

Resident Evil 8/Resident Evil Village is currently set to release in 2021. The game takes place a few years after the events of Resident Evil VII and brings back fan-favourite character Chris Redfield.

KitGuru Says: Traditionally, big games remain cross-gen for the first year or so of a new console generation, but I wouldn't be surprised if that process sped up a bit this time around. Do you want Resident Evil 8 to come to current gen? Or would you be fine with it being next-gen and PC only?

One of the most interesting changes brought by Resident Evil VII, aside from the shift to a first-person perspective, was the ability for PSVR owners to play the game in its entirety in VR. While we know that Resident Evil Village will also be first-person, there was no VR confirmation until now. Thanks to a recent leak, VR support appears to be returning.

Revealed via Biohazard Declassified, and reported by Rely on Horror, the confirmation of VR support is claimed to be from the game’s Ambassador playtests. According to Biohazard Declassified, “a VR version of Resident Evil 8: Village will happen, but they [Capcom] won’t make that announcement until Sony is ready.”

This new information suggests a number of potential things. Firstly, it suggests that once again, VR will not be coming to PC, due to Sony being in charge of the reveal. Such was the case with Resident Evil VII, with the VR version being exclusive to Sony’s PlayStation VR headset.

The second suggestion by this statement is that Sony might be preparing to reveal a second generation PSVR headset sometime in the future. Thanks to patents and leaks, the concept of a second generation PSVR is more of a “when” than an “if”.

With Sony reportedly withholding the reveal of VR support, as well as the fact that Resident Evil Village only has a release year of 2021, instead of firm release dates, there is a possibility that the console manufacturer plans to release a second generation headset in 2021. The first generation did release all the way back in 2016 after all, and VR technology has progressed rapidly since.

Of course, until Sony or Capcom makes the announcement, it cannot be said for certain that Resident Evil Village will offer VR support, or indeed that there will be a second generation PSVR. Only time will tell.

KitGuru says: Are you looking forward to Resident Evil Village? Would you like the game to support VR? What would you like from a second generation PSVR headset? Let us know down below.

When Resident Evil 7 released in 2017, one of its standout features was the fact that the game would be playable in its entirety using PlayStation VR. Now, with leaks and rumours surrounding the series’ next mainline entry beginning to come to light, it would appear as though Capcom intends to continue its experimentation with forward-facing technologies, as PlayStation VR support is once again said to be included.

Last week we reported that Resident Evil 8 was rumoured to be releasing next year, with more information set to leak throughout April. Now Gematsu has added further fuel to the fire, claiming that indeed, the next mainline Resident Evil title is planned for a 2021 release date.

Reportedly, Resident Evil 8 will follow in the footsteps of 7, and not 2 and 3, meaning that the game will be played in a first-person perspective. This also allows for Capcom to continue its support of the PSVR. According to Gematsu, Resident Evil 8, like 7, will be fully playable using the VR headset. It is currently unknown whether this will once again be exclusive to Sony’s console, or if VR support will be expanded to include the plethora of PC peripherals.

After the disappointing reception of Resident Evil 6, RE7: Biohazard was seen as a welcome evolution to a series which had become stale over the course of its last few entries. It would seem as though Capcom was pleased with the reception of RE7, and is now intending to continue pushing the series in that direction.

For those who were hoping to see the series return to its third-person perspective roots, more remakes of classic titles are rumoured to be on the way, including a remake of the much-loved Resident Evil 4.
