As the cornerstone of Azio's success, the Retro Classic Collection embodies the brand's aim of creating premium lifestyle workplace products. The original typewriter-style keyboard has pleased many, leading the company to launch a new model with the features seen on the latest premium mechanical keyboards.

The new RC Prestige Collection keyboard stays true to Azio's unique brand identity by presenting two new colours, Ebony and Ivory, while injecting the brand's material-centric design philosophy. The Ebony model has a faceplate in a black wood finish surrounded by a gunmetal grey aluminium frame and accents. As for the Ivory model, it features a white leather face enclosed in a silver aluminium profile. Both models feature unique double-shot keycap sets with a rounded square contour, distinguishing them from the circular keycaps of Azio's Retro Classic Collection.

The RC Prestige Collection keyboards preserve the classic body shape and design of its predecessors while adding a hot-swappable PCB with Gateron G Pro Brown switches as standard (Gateron G Pro Blue and Gateron G Pro Red switches are available as an option). However, the user can customise their typing experience by replacing these switches with others. The backlit vintage-style keycaps are compatible with other mechanical switches and keycap sets, allowing users to create their ideal typing arrangement. Moreover, these keyboards have adjustable feet and a dual connection mode, enabling users to connect via USB or Bluetooth to a maximum of three devices.

Those interested in Azio's new keyboards can visit the Kickstarter page to pre-order with a discount. While the keyboard will be released at $210, early birds can get it for $149 (limited to 100 units for each colour). In addition, there's a KS Special Edition for $169. Delivery is expected for July 2024.

Over at CES 2024, Atari and MyArcade have announced they're teaming up to release a new handheld gaming console aimed at retro gaming fans. The new portable device is named Game Station Portable and features a 7-inch screen. Unlike the majority of the latest portable gaming consoles, it's not based on Windows.

As noted by GenXGrownUp (via VideoCardz), the Game Station Portable comes equipped with a paddle controller, D-pad, trackball, and dial, making it perfect for traditional games such as Pong. Although Atari has yet to reveal a list of compatible titles, it's known that the upcoming portable console will support over 200 titles.

The device features a standard gamepad and keypads, and the MyArcade team has implemented LEDs around the compatible controller that provide visual signals to players unfamiliar with Atari games. These LEDs only light up if the game demands that particular controller or button. Additionally, the system includes a kickstand and two USB Type-C ports.

The Game Station Portable will retail for $149 and is planned to release in Q4 2024.

The Cooler Master MM71 has been around for a while now, ranking highly amongst fans of lightweight gaming mice. The limited edition Retro version of this mouse packs the same feature set in a different colourway and currently, Cooler Master has knocked a chunk off the price tag, meaning you can pick one up for less than a tenner.

As part of the Cooler Master Spring Sale, the company has knocked £30 off of the limited edition MM711 Retro gaming mouse, bringing its price down from £39.99 to just £9.99. If you've never had a ‘gaming' mouse, or yours is a little on the older side, this would make for an excellent replacement.

We reviewed the original version of the MM711 back at launch, coming away with praise for its cable, which doesn't drag as much as other stock cables we've seen on other wired mice. We also came away with positive impressions of the sensor, shape and overall build of the mouse.

The Cooler Master MM711 Retro can be found for £9.99 for a limited time, HERE.

The video games industry is a fast-moving and ever-evolving space, with new games coming out on a weekly basis. Unfortunately, many older titles have been left behind as a consequence, be it due to changing technologies or simply lack of support. Fortunately, Sony has now created a new team focused on preserving the legacy of games.

Game developer Garrett Fredley recently took to Twitter to announce that “Today is my first day as a Senior Build Engineer at @PlayStation, working as one of their initial hires for the newly created Preservation team!”

Sony themselves have yet to comment on this new team, though according to Fredley “Game Preservation was my first career passion, so I'm ecstatic that I get to go back to those roots.”

Game preservation is a vitally important responsibility, ensuring that the history of the industry and all of its games are available and accessible in some manner. While we do not yet know what Sony’s intention with this new team is, the console manufacturer will be tapping into its legacy titles for the upcoming PS Plus revamp, so that might certainly factor into the reasons for the team’s creation.

Regardless of intentions, it is good to see Sony making an active effort to preserve the history of their games.

While Retro Studios continues to work on Metroid Prime 4, rumours have persisted for years claiming that the studio has a nearly complete and working version of the original Metroid Prime Trilogy adapted for the Switch. One ex-Retro dev has weighed in on the rumour, claiming that porting the trilogy “would take a lot of effort.”

Michael Wikan served as a senior designer on all three Metroid Prime titles, as well as Donkey Kong Country Returns. As reported by NintendoEverything, in response to one fan expressing their desire to play the original Metroid Trilogy on Switch, Wikan said “That would take a lot of effort, so I am pretty skeptical it will happen.”

He further explained the effort it would take to port the games, saying “It was straightforward to update MP1 and 2 to motion controls, but converting MP3 to normal controls would be a herculean effort, as it is scripted very specifically.”

Not only that, but according to Wikan “Retro no longer has functional editor tools to work with the Prime code base, so everything has to be ‘brute force’ hard coded” making the task even harder.

That being said , it is not impossible, and so it will be interesting to see whether the Metroid Prime Trilogy does eventually make its way to Switch, and what changes need to be made in order to make it happen.

KitGuru says: What do you think of Wikan’s skepticism? Do you think it will come to Switch? When do you expect to see Metroid Prime 4 next? Let us know down below.

If you hanker for the long-gone days of dark and dingy arcades, with blinking and blooping machines with youngsters huddled round them, then New Retro Arcade: Neon is your VR dream come true. In its latest update too, the developers have added light gun support, meaning Time Crisis 2 and a host of other games are now available to play, just as they were back in the day.

Virtual reality is an exciting medium because it pushes the boundaries of what we know entertainment to be. It's ushered in all sorts of amazing new experiences for young and old alike, from the educational, to the awe inspiring, to the action packed. But it can also let us go back and relive life as it once was, like when we used to visit arcades. That's what New Retro is all about.

Compatible with Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and OSVR headsets, New Retro Arcade lets you visit the old world with up to five friends, letting you interact with it using fully tracked motion controllers – and now with light guns too. You will need to set the ROMs up yourself, or just tap up the community for the relevant files and folders, but that's the beauty of the VR arcade: it can be whatever you want it to be.

Nintendo may often be considered a company that looks to the past for its future, but it's understandable when its back catalogue is so strong. One of its more exciting recent announcements is the Nintendo Classic Mini which will bring many of the console's classic games to the modern era, in a compact, affordable package.

Set to go on sale on 11th November for £50, the NES Mini will come pre-loaded with 30 games, including many of its most beloved, like: Balloon Fight, Castlevania, Double Dragon II: The Revenge, Dr Mario, Final Fantasy, Ghosts and Goblins, Mega Man 2, Pac-Man, Super Mario Bros 1-3, Legend of Zelda and many more.

Nintendo has continued to drip feed information about it to us over the past few weeks and now we also know that it will come with a couple of different visual modes, letting you experience a modern re-imagining of the games, or their classic look.

nesmini

There is a standard HD output, for those that are happy with a look that is a little crisper than anyone ever experienced on old TVs, but you can also switch to a retro CRT mode, which gives you a 4:3 aspect ratio and some black bars to simulate what it was like back in the day.

For the purists, there's also a “pixel-perfect” mode, which makes sure that all pixels in-game are displayed as singular blocks, rather than the more nuanced higher-definition variants we have thanks to today's TVs. That should make it look as close to what it did on the original NES as possible.

Nintendo has also announced (via Ars) that each game will have permanent save points, as well as temporary ones, suggesting a blending of quicksave/autosave and manual saving.

One of the most noticeable aspects of the recent Joaquin Phoenix vehicle, “Her,” was that technology in this imagined future was very subtle. Instead of giving us a Minority Report near future filled with glass, aluminium and invasive advertising, we instead were shown a world where technology had retreated into subtlety, hiding in the background but always there. The new Steepletone Brighton radio reminded me of that future and looked like it would fit in really well.

Unlike most audio augmenters of the modern age, this is a fairly streamlined product, coming in just two colour variants and not providing anything in the way of smartphone or MP3 player integration (which seems like a missed opportunity). This bit of 50's looking retro tech will connect to radio only, offering MW, LW and FM bands via big push buttons on top. To tune into the station itself, you'll need to turn the dial like they did in the old days.

brighton

While this radio does come with a mains adaptor, it's clearly designed to be taken out and about thanks to its little carry handle. However, that means batteries and this wouldn't be a true retro product without giant batteries now would it? They're included with the Brighton, which is impressive, but they are those old style, chunky C batteries. It's not clear how long they'll last, but you will need six at a time, so it might get a little expensive to run this regularly.

Available in beige and pink, you can pick up the Brighton Retro radio for £40 over at Prezzybox.

KitGuru Says: I imagine there aren't many AM and FM radio listeners in our audience, but if you have an older relative this might make for a nice nostalgia kick for them. What do you think?

Last month, the fabled Atari landfill was finally excavated and a Microsoft documentary crew recovered 1300 boxed copies of the failed E.T. game. Since the discovery, it's been up in the air as to what Microsoft plans to do with the cartridges.

However, it has now been revealed that 700 of the 1300 cartridges will be appraised, certified and then sold at the New Mexico Museum of Space History, the Alamogordo City Commission has announced. Alamogordo Mayor, Susie Galea, told Polygon: “We have been working with the space museum for curation, both for displaying and selling the games; they are now artefacts.”

Atari-Dig_Evidence

The remaining six hundred cartridges will be distributed amongst local New Mexico museums. Some of the 700 cartridges may be sold online and all of them will come with a certificate of authenticity. In total, 700,000 copies of the game were found at the landfill but due to them being 30 feet underground, the excavation team decided to grab what it could and bury the rest.

The site where 700,000 copies of the failed game remain is due to become a tourist attraction, which will be partially funded by the sale of 700 cartridges. That said, these plans have yet to be determined. The price of the cartridges is also yet to be revealed.

If you fancy buying an old console for the price of an Xbox One then retro hardware manufacturer,  Analogue Interactive, has something for you. The company is known for releasing expensive editions of old consoles having released a wooden Neo Geo system in the past for $649. Now the company is back with an aluminium, modern looking NES and Famicom console called the Analogue NT.

The Analogue NT is a modern take on old hardware with some added features such as extra controller ports and support for 720p/1080p displays with an HDMI output. The manufacturer notes that the HDMI is a “true upscaler (no stretching) and that it outputs 1080p or 720p preserving the original aspect ratio. It even has a built in scan-line generator for that retro CRT feel.”

product4

The reason this NES costs so much is due to the fact that it's “precision fabricated from a single, solid block of 6061 aluminium and engineered with an uncompromising attitude to quality.”

You can choose several colour options including black and red but these will cost you an extra $49, you can also add controllers and leads to your order which vary in price from $19 all the way up to $49. However, if you're a retro enthusiast, don't go spending that $500 just yet as there may be some compatibility issues with certain PAL titles: “while the Analogue Nt is region free and uses the original Nintendo CPU and PPU – it uses the NTSC 60 Hz PPU versus the PAL 50 Hz PPU. Compatibility issues with certain PAL titles may exist.”

The console is currently available for pre-order with shipments expected to go out at some point in the Summer.

Unusual one this. You'd normally expect a manufacturer to announce the availability of a chassis, but with the InWin designed 901 it looks like system builder YOYOTech has a bit of a deal to control the supply. KitGuru checks to see how customs will be checking the border.

While mining created a massive surge in demand for high end power supplies around the end of last year, the market overall has been looking at smaller, cooler, less energy-hungry designs in recent times.

Both Intel and AMD have interesting options in the Mini-ITX area, with products like the Gigabyte Sniper G1 A88X and ‘Gene' options from Asus giving builders more flexibility than ever before.

YOYOTech's deal to land the UK supply of the 901 chassis is the latest move in this trend.

Originally shown off by InWin at CES, it quickly picked up a ‘Best of Show' award as well as a coveted ‘Red Dot Design Award'.

At £149, this chassis isn't cheap, but it is pretty/fancy with its smoked glass side panels and unusual cut-away at the bottom of the front panel – where you can secret an optical drive away.

According to YOYOTech, this case is manufactured from a single strip of 4mm thick aluminium with tinted, tempered side panels.

They also provided this list of key spec points:-

  • Support for graphics cards up to 300mm
  • CPU cut out for easy installation
  • Hidden optical disk drive bay
  • Support for external liquid cooling systems, removable hard drive brackets
  • Super-efficient airflow design
  • USB 3.0 ports
  • Magnetic aluminium fan filter and hidden vents

There are 2 bays for SSD (2.5″) and a pair of drives that can be used for SSD or traditional drives (3.5″) – the i/o is taken care of by a pair of USB 3 ports and a 3.5mm audio jack.
YOYOTech claims that airflow is smooth with a whisper quiet 90mm rear fan, 120mm fan at the bottom of the chassis and a 120mm liquid cooling radiator.

The overall dimensions are 350mm x 173mm x 400mm and the 901 can support a CPU heatsink that’s up to 130mm.

Here's a promo shot. You can get more info here.

This is partly to collect them and partly to play with them – seriously I swear apart from a few things, my hobbies have reverted to the same as when I was 13 – but it's all about nostalgia. During this sometimes expensive collection period, I've had moments where “if only,” I'd kept such and such, it would be worth loads now or at the very least, I wouldn't have trouble finding one.

Where am I going with this? We're at the end of a console generation people, if you don't hold on to your 360, in a few years time, you might be buying one from someone that did.

And then you'll be doing it because it's retro and “omg do you remember playing X, it was so cool!” etc. Except as this Youtube user points out (just over 2/3 of the way in if you want to skip the pre-ample) it won't be the same as going back to play retro consoles of today, because of the way the current generation has been handled.

There's the lack of local multiplayer in a lot of cases, which means without the servers (that will all be shut down in the coming years) there's no multiplayer on a lot of games. Then there's DLC, good luck finding that 10 years down the line, those servers will be gone too. A few of those, always-on games that are still kicking around will be completely bricked and what about XBLA? We know that Microsoft isn't supporting it with the XBOX One, so how many years do you think Microsoft will keep paying for that once everyone's moved on from the 360?

Of course this will all be a thousand times worse with the Xbox One, which may not even operate at all in the future without some sort of mod, once we're on to the Xbox two – if the rumours of a regular online check are to be believed.

KitGuru Says: Retro is awesome, because while we've changed, the experience hasn't. It's fun to remember and realise it was crap, or that it was amazing and now for some reason, you're a way worse player than you were when you were 5. The current gen, with its minor limitations will be a shadow of its former self in a decade's time. The “next-gen”, might not even be able to boot.
