Tencent has been expanding its roster of studios in recent years, putting significant investments into companies like Dontnod Entertainment, Remedy and others. In its latest move, Tencent has now acquired Spanish studio, Tequila Works.

Tequila Works is best known for Rime and The Sexy Brutale, both of which released to high acclaim in 2017. Since then, the company has released one other game, Gylt, which received a decent reception, but has been played by very few due to its exclusive release on Google's Stadia platform.

Now, Tequila Works no longer has to deal with the trials and tribulations of being an independent studio and has obtained the financial backing of Tencent, which also owns Riot Games and has a large stake in Epic Games.

Under Tencent, Tequila Works will continue to operate as normal and the company says it will retain creative freedom as it works on new IPs. Currently, Tequila Works is developing Song of Nunu, a League of Legends spin-off game.

KitGuru Says: Tequila Works officially has new ownership, which hopefully means we'll see a few more games from the studio soon, as the last couple of years have been pretty quiet.

Rime may already be out on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One but there are a fair few people out there still waiting on the Nintendo Switch version. Fortunately, Switch owners will be able to get their hands on it before the end of the year, as Tequila Works has announced it will be releasing the game on Nintendo’s console on the 17th of November.

Rime has had an interesting history to say the least. The game was first revealed to the world as a PlayStation 4 exclusive. However, Tequila Works decided to buy the rights back from Sony, turning it into a multi-platform release instead. The game is inspired by older games like Ico, with a big focus on story telling and puzzle solving, rather than combat. Judging by the reviews, it’s a solid game all around.

Rime will finally come to Nintendo Switch on the 14th of November in the US and the 17th of November in Europe. The physical version of the game costs £39.99 due to the cost of the cartridge. However, the digital version on the Nintendo eShop will be cheaper, coming in at £29.99 instead.

KitGuru Says: This has been on my ’to buy’ list since I first got my Nintendo Switch. At the time, I thought the game would come out on Switch a little sooner but since I’ve waited this long already, I might as well stick it out. Have any of you had a chance to play Rime already? Or are you perhaps planning on picking up the Switch version?

Some leaked documents obtained by VG Leaks reveal that Rime developer, Tequila Works, originally pitched the game to Microsoft under the working title, Echoes of Siren. Microsoft passed on the game but has since implied that this was a mistake.

The now Playstation exclusive title currently has no release date but a trailer was shown at Gamescon last year:

When pitching the game, Tequila Works, described it as “Gauntlet meets Minecraft meets Jason and the Argonauts.” Microsoft Studios Chief, Phil Spencer, admitted that passing on the game may have been a mistake in a tweet: “Part of the job is living with mistakes.Passed on Guitar Hero… I can list many misses regretfully. I try to focus on what we did ship.”

Not much is known about Rime so far aside from the fact that its a third person open world game with a distinct art style. However, considering that Microsoft openly regrets passing on the title, it might be safe to assume that game is turning out well.

KitGuru Says: The trailer for this game didn't really interest me, that said, its unfair to judge without seeing any real gameplay or even playing the game myself. However, i'm curious to see what other titles Microsoft has passed on.
