WADA, the World Anti-Doping Agency, confirmed yesterday that its databases had been hacked and confidential medical data, some of it on U.S. olympic athletes, had been stolen. Worse still, this hack is actually being laid at the feet of the Russian government, with some claiming it's revenge for WADA's attempt to have Russia banned form the 2016 games.

Russian athletes and their government were under investigation for a couple of years for what was suspected to be widespread doping – the use of various chemicals and compounds to improve athletic performance artificially. They were eventually found culpable in a wide scale doping scandal, though not all athletes were ultimately banned from the games. Some 167 were removed, while just over 200 were allowed to compete.

WADA believes that it was its involvement in that investigation which caused Russian hackers to attack its servers. While the identity of the hackers remain unconfirmed, the private medical data for a number of U.S. athletes has been leaked, suggesting that the hack is certainly legitimate.

“WADA has been informed by law enforcement authorities that these attacks are originating out of Russia,” agency Director General Olivier Niggli said in the statement (via Ars). “Let it be known that these criminal acts are greatly compromising the effort by the global anti-doping community to re-establish trust in Russia further to the outcomes of the Agency’s independent McLaren Investigation Report.”

However there may be more fall out than just Russian/U.S. relations because of this hack. The leaked confidential files detail certain athletes being given medical exceptions to take certain substances that would otherwise be banned during or out of competition.

Olympic officials have said that all exceptions were legitimate and that none of the cited athletes broke any rules. However the hackers claim that this is just an example of collusion between WADA, the U.S. and the International Olympic Committee.

The hackers claim that more information is coming in the near future, which will make further revelations about athletes from other countries too.

KitGuru Says: I always assume that with any professional athletic endeavour when lots of money is involved, everyone at the highest levels are likely taking something. Whether it's for recovery or increased performance, if it can help you with your job and you ‘probably' won't be caught, there's not much of a downside.

If you have a virtual reality headset and a few hours during this year's Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero, then you might want to give the BBC's coverage a look. The broadcasting organisation has announced that over 100 hours of the Summer games will be broadcast in 360 degrees, letting you feel like you're there.

The coverage begins this Saturday, 6th August, with the opening ceremony and will continue sporadically through the games, showcasing various 360 degree content from boxing, volleyball, athletics and more.

Unfortunately though, Ars is reporting that although the feeds will be 360 degrees, they won't be stereoscopic, so you won't get much of a feeling of presence, but you will get head control, giving you the ability to look at what you like while the events are ongoing.

You can have a look at the 360 degree footage in glorious virtual reality on mobile or desktop platforms, though you'll need a VR headset to take full advantage. For mobile users with a Gear VR headset, there's the BBC Sport 360 trial app which will soon be available on iOS and Android. For desktop users, the BBC Taster web portal is where you'll find coverage when it goes live.

Simply watch either of those streams with your VR headset on and you'll have an up-close window on the games.

Moving forward the BBC plans to offer more 360 degree coverage of sporting events. How much effort it puts into future uses of the technology will depend on how much interest events like this receive from the VR community.

KitGuru Says: I need to remember to check this out. The Olympics isn't something I'm particularly fussed with, but a VR stream should make it more exciting.

The latest mumbling around the world are suggesting that HTC plans to unveil its Windows Phone 8 range in the third week of September at an event in either London or New York.

The models in question have been leaked previously and have been codenamed as the Rio, Accord and Zenith.

The Rio is at the lowest end of the spectrum and offers a 4 inch WVGA (480×800) display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM 8227 chipset which includes a 1 GHz dual-core Krait processor and an Adreno 305 GPU. There will also be 512 MB of RAM on board, as well as a 5 MP camera and 14.4 Mb/s HSPA connectivity.

Upping the scale a bit will be the Accord with a 4.3 inch 720p Super LCD2 display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8260A chipset with a dual-core processor and 1 GB of RAM. The Accord will also have an 8 MP camera, NFC and 42 Mb/s HSPA+ connectivity.

The top of the line Zenith will include a 4.7 inch 720p Super LCD2 display and a quad-core Snapdragon S4 processor. It will also boast the same 8 MP sensor as the Accord and also offer the same connectivity options.

All going well, these devices will be available for purchase in October.

KitGuru says: With Samsung dominating Android, HTC could find a niche in the Windows Phone 8 platform.
