G.Skill, a leading maker of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) modules for enthusiasts, has unveiled its first 3.40GHz DDR4 memory chips. While the company is not the first to announce 3.40GHz DDR4 solutions, it will be the first to actually ship appropriate DDR4 memory modules in volume.

G.Skill’s Ripjaws 4 new DDR4 memory modules are rated to run at 3400MHz with CL16 16-16-36 latency settings and 1.35V voltage. The memory sticks will be available in quad-channel 16GB (4GB*4) memory kits for Intel Core i7 “Haswell-E” high-end desktop platforms (HEDT). The new high-performance memory kits come with awesome Turbulence III memory fans.

Separately, G.Skill introduced a DDR4 3200MHz memory kit with CL15 timings, which should become popular among those, who believe that latency settings play a good role in memory sub-system's performance nowadays.

According to G.Skill, the new Ripjaws 4 DDR4 3400MHz 16GB (4GBx4) memory kit is made from hand-picked DRAM devices during  a “highly-selective binning process.” The modules have been tested for compatibility on the Asus Rampage V Extreme and Gigabyte X99-SOC Champion motherboards, the manufacturer said.

G.Skill did not reveal the price of the new modules and memory kits, but given their exclusive specifications, do not expect them to be affordable.

KitGuru Says: While premium modules that can operate at 3.40GHz will certainly attract attention of enthusiasts of extreme performance, the vast majority of end-users will hardly even notice the announcement of G.Skill. Still, a several quarters from now, when Intel Corp. introduces its unlocked Skylake-K processors for “mainstream” overclockers, 3400MHz DDR4 memory modules will certainly get rather popular.

G.Skill said on Friday that its specialists have managed to overclock the company's Ripjaws 4-series DDR4 memory modules to rather whopping 4GHz effective data-rate. While 4004MHz this is not particularly the world’s record memory frequency, the achievement shows that the first-generation DDR4 memory modules are rather good for overclocking.

To push a 4GB Ripjaws 4 DDR4 memory module to 4.0GHz, overclockers from G.Skill used a testbed powered by Asus ROG X99 Rampage V Extreme mainboard as well as Intel Core i7-5930K processor cooled by liquid-nitrogen. The frequency of the microprocessor was lowered to 2184.24MHz in order to maximize overclocking potential of its memory controller. The final frequency of the module was 4004.4MHz.

gskill_ddr4_overclock

While the overclocking memory in single-channel mode does not have any practical meaning since today’s memory sub-systems are dual- or quad-channel, the 4GHz clock-rate demonstrate the potential of the DDR4 in general.

If the very first commercial DDR4 modules can hit 4GHz, imagine what can be expected a couple of years down the road when DRAM makers learn how to make high-speed DDR4 chips, module and mainboard manufacturers develop sophisticated PCB designs for DDR4 and memory controller developers (e.g., Intel, AMD, etc.) realize how to develop advanced controllers.

It is interesting to note that 4266MHz is officially the highest effective data-rate for the DDR4 standard in general. Given the current overclocking result, it is likely that JEDEC, an organization that develops DRAM-related standards, will have to increase the DDR4 goals and extend the the DDR4 roadmap to include higher frequencies.

The world’s highest computer memory frequency that has ever been reached is 4.62GHz (4620MHz), according to CPU-Z. DDR4 yet has to hit such clock-rates, but it will clearly do it in the foreseeable future.

G.Skill on Friday officially introduced its Ripjaws 4 DDR4 memory modules designed for performance enthusiasts. The Ripjaws 4 product line will include multiple modules with clock-rates ranging from 2133MHz to 3200MHz.

G.Skill’s Ripjaws 4 quad-channel DDR4 memory kits will consist of 4GB or 8GB memory modules that work at 2133MHz, 2400MHz, 2666MHz, 2800MHz, 3000MHz or 3200MHz effective data-rates with CL16 16-16-36 or CL15 15-15-35 timings. Ripjaws 4 modules feature 1.2V voltage for kits with frequencies below 2800MHz and 1.35V voltage for 3000MHz/3200MHz solutions.

The Ripjaws 4 memory modules with clock-rates over 2400MHz support Intel XMP 2.0 for automatic and trouble-free tuning. According to G.Skill, the modules have been validated for compatibility with “most upcoming X99 motherboards” with a series of rigorous tests in quad-channel mode.

As reported, the Ripjaws 4 DDR4 modules are equipped with all-new heat-spreaders painted in red, blue or black. The height of the memory modules is 40mm, which means that they should be compatible with the majority of high-end CPU coolers.

So far only G.Skill and Avexir have announced DDR4 memory modules with effective clock-rates higher than 3.0GHz. G.Skill will likely ship its 3.20GHz DDR4 modules in the coming weeks, whereas Avexir is expected to supply its 3.40GHz DDR4 modules in the coming months.

The first-generation DDR4 memory modules will be aimed at Intel Corp.’s Core i7 5800-/5900-series “Haswell-E” high-end desktop (HEDT) platforms featuring quad-channel memory sub-systems. Intel will official launch its new Core i7 Extreme processors as well as the X99 platform on the 29th of August, 2014.

KitGuru Says: Overclockers UK currently offers over 20 DDR4 memory options, so it is pretty clear that there will be a lot of DDR4 modules available in the coming weeks and months. What remains to be seen is when module makers start to compete against each other in terms of performance, just like in the good old days?
