After three days of chaos, the Rockstar launcher is finally back online and those who bought the PC version of the Grand Theft Auto definitive edition trilogy can finally begin to play.

While Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition was supposed to launch on PC last Thursday alongside the console versions of the game, Rockstar immediately took the Rockstar launcher down and blocked access to the games on PC. Over the weekend, it was revealed that this was largely due to the inclusion of various files in the PC release version.

Some of these files include developer notes, the infamous “Hot Coffee” mod for GTA: San Andreas and a bunch of unlicensed music tracks, which were no longer supposed to appear in the game. Rockstar confirmed that it took the games down to remove these “unintentionally included” files.

Rockstar has also now commented on various performance issues and bugs found in the game, promising to “improve and update overall performance as we move forward”.

If you've been holding off on picking up the GTA Definitive Edition trilogy, then we would recommend waiting a bit longer, as there are plenty of performance issues and gameplay bugs that still need to be addressed. Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition launched as planned yesterday but unfortunately, as soon as the game became available, the Rockstar launcher became unresponsive. Currently, the launcher continues to be offline, blocking access to the new GTA remasters, as well as other games, like GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC.

Roughly 24 hours ago, Rockstar Support acknowledged the issue, saying that “services for the Rockstar Games Launcher and supported titles are temporarily offline for maintenance”. That maintenance does not seem to have gone well, as the launcher is still offline now, a full day later. As of eight hours ago, the team was continuing to work on “restoring services” for the launcher and its games.

This wouldn't be an issue if Rockstar had offered PC gamers more choice in where to buy the new GTA trilogy. Currently, the remastered games are skipping over Steam and other platforms, like the Epic Games Store, to stay exclusive to the Rockstar Launcher.

There is currently no timeline for when services will return and Rockstar has suspended sales of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition on PC. You might not want to pick the game up anyway, as the remasters seem to be a mess right now – find more on that in this week's KitGuru Games, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Have any of you purchased the GTA trilogy already? Have you been unable to play due to the Rockstar Launcher outage?

Red Dead Redemption 2 has finally made its way to PC this week and while it is visually impressive, a lot of early players have run into bugs and issues at launch. To help fix some of this, Rockstar has issued an update for the Rockstar Games Launcher, which was causing a number of crashes and failures to load. There are some other fixes floating around too for those encountering stuttering, freezing or other in-game crashes.

Starting things off, if you have had an error where the Rockstar Games Launcher “failed to initialize” on startup or crashed, preload decryption failed, or an error asking you to verify your game files, then make sure you install the latest Rockstar Games Launcher update. The latest update addresses these issues when launching the game directly through Rockstar's launcher as well as launching through the Epic Games Store.

Other common causes for crashes include out of date GPU drivers, so be sure to install the new updates pushed out by both Nvidia and AMD earlier this week. Anti-virus software may also be interfering with the game at points and causing crashes, so double check your anti-virus software and make sure exceptions are in place for Red Dead Redemption 2, or disable it entirely while playing and see if that helps.

Stuttering and freezing issues in-game are a little more complicated. One Redditor claims that disabling two-cores on a quad-core CPU via the task manager can help smooth out performance, although judging by the feedback, this isn't a fix that works for everyone. Before trying that, we would suggest testing the DIrectX 12 API in the advanced graphics options menu, as while the average frame rate is lower than the game running on Vulkan, frame pacing appears to be smoother, which should fix stuttering. Beyond that, perhaps try different combinations of FreeSync, G-Sync and V-Sync, or enable a frame rate cap to try and smooth things over.

Rockstar will be patching Red Dead Redemption 2 in the weeks to come, so hopefully these user-side fixes won't be necessary for very long. We'll keep an eye out for more updates from Rockstar has bug fixes get underway.
