IFA 2019 has been a rather big event for ASUS this year, with new ProArt monitors and laptops, the ROG Phone II and more. LEO had the chance to check out some of the new tech at the Asus booth to get more details and hands-on.

The ROG Phone II is on the way, packing a 120Hz OLED display and a Snapdragon 855 Plus processor. It is a truly impressive smartphone in terms of spec and we got to see the device broken down into its individual components to get a better grasp of the engineering work. In other ROG news, there is also a 300Hz gaming laptop on the way.

ProArt has been a huge topic of discussion at this year's IFA. ASUS has launched three new ProArt monitors, the PA329C with HDR600, the PA27UCX with MiniLED backlights and finally, the PA32UCG– which sports an incredible 4K/120Hz panel with HDR1600. This one has a peak brightness of 1600 nits and a sustained brightness of 1,000 nits across over 1,000 Mini LED backlight zones.

The ProArt StudioBook series is another big one. The flagship here is the StudioBook One- the world's most graphically powerful laptop. It features a Core i9-9900HK, a 4K display and an Nvidia Quadro RTX 6000 housed in the list of the laptop. This is not a Max-Q design and we have been told that total power draw can reach up to 300W with Optimus and a few other power saving tools enabled to shift CPU/GPU power based on the application. It is a beastly laptop and while pricing hasn't been confirmed, we are hearing it could fall somewhere in the £10,000 range.

There are other ProArt StudioBook laptops in the range too. The Quadro RTX 5000 model uses a Max-Q design with an 80W TDP. There are also models with RTX 2060s and Quadro 3000 GPUs on the way, in addition to Core i7 and Intel Xeon CPU options.

KitGuru Says: IFA has been huge for ASUS this year with a ton of announcements coming throughout the week. What do you think of all the latest stuff?

ASUS broke its way into the gaming smartphone market last year with the original ROG Phone. This year, we will be getting the ROG Phone II, featuring a 120Hz OLED display, up to 1TB of storage and a few other upgrades.

The ROG Phone II will sport a 6.59-inch 1080p OLED display with an integrated fingerprint sensor, 10-bit HDR visuals and a 120Hz native refresh rate. Beyond that, touch sampling will occur at 240Hz, so scrolling/swiping through apps will feel even smoother, similarly to the 120Hz touch sampling on the iPad Pro.

The normal edition of the ROG Phone will ship with up to 512GB of storage, but if you want more, there is a 1TB ‘Ultimate Edition' also on the way. The ROG Phone II begins shipping this month with prices starting at €899. The Ultimate Edition will arrive in October with a fairly big price jump to €1,199.

Other features worth noting is the 49ms touch latency. Touch screen latency isn't talked about often in the smartphone world but at 49ms, the ROG Phone II should have the most responsive display on the market. Beyond that, the core hardware features 12GB of RAM, a 48-megapixel camera, a 6,000mAh battery and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus with an Adreno 640 GPU.

For the ROG Phone II, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 has been modified for higher clock speeds and faster gaming performance to take advantage of the display. All of that is cooled by a vapour chamber design to avoid thermal throttling. We should hear more hands-on impressions in the coming weeks.

KitGuru Says: The ROG Phone II is looking very impressive so far. Did any of you happen to use an original ROG Phone? Are you thinking about getting the ROG Phone II?

It has been just over one year since ASUS first announced the ROG Phone and now, it looks like we are due a new model with a few significant upgrades. The original ROG Phone still has hardware to be reckoned with but the new and improved version will raise the bar further with a 120Hz OLED panel and 240Hz touch sampling, among a few other changes.

The ROG Phone II will sport a 6.59-inch 1080p OLED display with an integrated fingerprint sensor, 10-bit HDR visuals and a 120Hz native refresh rate. Beyond that, touch sampling will occur at 240Hz, so scrolling/swiping through apps will feel even smoother. This is similar to what Apple has implemented in the latest iPad Pro, with 120Hz touch sampling delivering smoother interactions with the display.

Another important thing to note about the display is that touch latency has been reduced to 49ms, this isn't something that is often talked about when it comes to smartphone touchscreens but Asus claims it is the lowest of any phone currently on the market.

Under the display, you will find a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus processor running the show. This is a ‘gaming focused' SoC from Qualcomm that ramps up GPU and CPU speeds for improved performance in games. The cooling system inside of the ROG Phone II has had special attention paid to it too, with a vapour chamber and vents preventing the device from thermal throttling.

Other specs include 12GB of RAM, a 48-megapixel camera, a 6,000mAh battery and up to 512GB of storage. Users will also have the option of installing stock Android or using the Asus UI when first setting up the phone.

KitGuru Says: There is no price or specific release date for the ROG Phone II just yet but it will launch in China first and then there should be a global version some time in September. We'll be looking forward to seeing more of it ourselves.

Back in 2017, Razer brought back the idea of a ‘gaming phone' with the launch of the Razer Phone. Not long after, ASUS launched its own ROG Phone with a similar focus on appealing to gamers with a high refresh rate display and various peripherals. The ROG Phone has been out for a while now and according to reports this week, the ROG Phone 2 isn't far off.

According to a recent report from DigiTimes, ASUS may be planning to launch the ROG Phone 2 in Q3 this year. According to the ‘industry sources' cited, Tencent will be an advertising partner this time around to give the phone a bigger push to combat increased competition in the gaming phone market.

If a second ROG Phone is on the way in Q3, it might not be too long until we hear about it. Rumour has it that there won't be a new Razer Phone this year either, so ASUS could end up increasing its marketshare in 2019.

It does seem a bit soon to be talking about an ROG Phone 2 though. The original had a staggered rollout and only launched in the UK just a few months ago in mid-December 2019.

KitGuru Says: The original ROG Phone was very interesting to cover and get hands-on with. If a new and improved version is on the way this year, we'll be keen on seeing what improvements are made.
