While Bethesda might be all done cranking out season pass DLC for Fallout 4, the studio isn't quite finished with the game entirely. Next week, not only with there be a PS4 Pro upgrade for this game, but PC players will finally be able to download the high-resolution texture pack, requiring an additional 58GB of space and raising the game's system requirements significantly- to the point where it calls for an AMD GPU that doesn't exist yet.

Bethesda announced the high-resolution texture pack yesterday, including a single 4K screenshot of what to expect from the graphical upgrade, which you can see below.

Obviously, these higher resolution textures also require beefier hardware to keep the game running smoothly. Here are the recommended specs:

  • Windows 7/8/10 (64-bit required).
  • Intel Core i7-5820K or better.
  • Nvidia GTX 1080 8GB or AMD Radeon RX 490 8GB.
  • 8GB+ of RAM.

Obviously, the RX 490 doesn't actually exist yet and once that was pointed out to Bethesda, the studio edited its blog post to remove its mention. However, this wouldn't be the first time that mention of the RX 490 has appeared. In the past, this GPU has appeared on AMD's own website and there have been some rumours suggesting that the RX 490 could be a Vega-based graphics card, set for release in the first half of 2017.

KitGuru Says: Chances are this was just a mistake on Bethesda's part and not any sort of nod towards an upcoming RX 490. Either way though, the system requirements for the high-resolution texture pack set the bar very high. Not only do you need an extra 58GB of space but you will also need a £600 graphics card to run it smoothly.

Just recently, we began hearing whispers about a potential RX 490 again after months of silence. While at the time these rumours didn't seem so credible, we have since come across a mysterious, previously unseen GPU in a benchmark database listing, showing an unnamed AMD card matching the GTX 1080 in terms of in-game performance.

GPU ID 687F:C1 has been spotted on the Ashes of Singularity benchmark database, hitting an average of 85 frames per second using ‘standard' level graphics settings at 1080p. The exact benchmark score was 8400, which sits in a similar range to several GTX 1080 results though it is worth pointing out that there are some outliers in this range of results, with a mobile R9 200 series popping up with a similar score, alongside a couple of GTX 1070s.

This new device ID has not been seen before within AMD's graphics stack, so this is definitely a new card and it does not appear to be a dual-GPU solution like previously theorised, so this could potentially be Vega 10, though that is also very speculative. Curiously, the benchmark listing has disappeared from the Ashes database too after being spotted.

If previous rumours are accurate, then this GPU may be the RX 490, though that name could very well change. If this does turn out to be a Vega GPU, then perhaps it will be released as part of a new Fury line-up instead. Either way, it seems to be a higher-end card aimed to compete against Nvidia's top contenders.

KitGuru Says: It is nice to see something more substantial leak out after the shaky rumours we heard about a few weeks ago. However, we still don't have much to go on. Someone is making moves over at AMD though and it is only a matter of time before more information surfaces.

Back in July, AMD accidentally listed the RX 490 on its website for a brief time, which swiftly prompted rumours surrounding AMD's higher-end GPU plans for 2016. It has been a few months since then with very little in the way of new information but this week, reports popped up claiming that we may actually get our first look at the RX 490 as soon as December.

Right now, reports are sitting on top of shaky ground with not much evidence really to back them up. According to some, the RX 490 may end up being a dual-GPU card with two Polaris 10 chips on one PCB. This would then be priced competitively against the likes of the GTX 1080, though in terms of performance you would have to live with the drawbacks of using a dual-GPU setup. Alternatively, if the RX 490 ends up coming next year instead, it may end up being a single-GPU card with Vega 10 on board.

rx-480

So why do some seem to think that the RX 490 may be a dual-GPU card? Well, wccftech's report seems to cite a Zauba shipment manifest and an RRA certification, which contains variants of GPUs we have already seen (RX 480, 470 and 460) alongside one card we have yet to see. This board is codenamed ‘C99' and it happened to pass RRA certification way back in April, long before AMD wrapped up development on Vega 10.

Since this card was certified prior to Vega 10 being finished, that leaves us with Polaris 10 as the potential GPU. The insurance value for the C99 board listed on Zauba is also roughly double that of the RX 480, making it more likely that this could be a dual-GPU card featuring two full Polaris 10 chips. Given that AMD has previously claimed that two RX 480s can beat out a single GTX 1080, that gives us a hint at what sort of performance they would be aiming for with the RX 490.

While the certifications and shipment manifests do serve as some evidence that AMD is currently putting together a new GPU, there isn't actually any compelling evidence to support the claim that it will arrive in December. There also isn't a ton of evidence pointing towards the RX 490 naming aside from the accidental listing on AMD's site earlier this year.

KitGuru Says: As much as I love theorising about graphics card releases, if the RX 490 was being planned for launch so soon, I imagine we would have some more concrete evidence by now, alongside a few leaks from AIBs. It will be worth keeping an eye out over the next couple of weeks just in case anything more solid comes along but I wouldn't put my upgrade plans on hold just yet based on what we have so far.

Right now, AMD is focusing on dominating the mid-range GPU market with the launch of the RX 480, with the RX 460 and RX 470 set to also hit the market soon. However, there will be higher-end cards on the way eventually and this week, AMD accidentally outed the RX 490 on its website briefly.

The listing wasn't up for long but the evidence was preserved by a user on Reddit beforehand. The RX 490 was listed as a card eligible as part of a key redeem program, which is running between February and the end of December this year, suggesting that perhaps the RX 490 will come out in 2016.

AMD-Ellesmere-RX-480-4

Interestingly though, there is some talk of the RX 490 possibly being a dual-GPU card, featuring two full-blown Polaris 10 chips on a single PCB. This rumour (via wccftech) is based on Zauba listings and the fact that the board that is currently believed to be the RX 490 has a similar codename and value to the test board for Gemini, which went on to become the Radeon Pro Duo. It isn't much to go on so don't put too much stock in that rumour.

The reasoning behind the RX 490 not being a Vega GPU hinges on the fact that certification for the board came prior to AMD hitting its Vega milestone recently. Once again, keep in mind that a lot of this is speculative and far from being fact right now.

KitGuru Says: While AMD launching an RX 490 would not be surprising news, making it a dual-GPU would seem like an odd step. After all, it seemed like AMD was taking a step back from dual-GPUs with the Radeon Pro Duo, which was only made available through very select channels and geared for professional use, rather than consumer use. Either way, most of this is speculation for now, the only thing we really know is that AMD's accidental listing points towards an RX 490 existing, beyond that, we will just have to wait and see.
