We've known about it for a little while, but it looks like we may finally be seeing a launch at Computex.

The post The PowerColor RX Vega Nano to reappear at Computex first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
Back when we visited AMD to learn about Ryzen 2nd Gen, we saw something peculiar and interesting- an RX Vega Nano. Unlike Fury, Vega currently has no official ‘Nano' version from AMD, but PowerColor is taking matters into its own hands with a version of its own. Now it looks like we can expect a proper launch for it at Computex in a couple of weeks.

We've had our own images of the PowerColor RX Vega Nano since the event in March. Unfortunately, we were unable to get more information about it through official channels at the time, so details are light at the moment. However, it looks like an official launch is now in sight, so we are finally publishing our images (yes we were told we could take pictures at the time):

Do note that if you are running AdBlock, then the images above may not appear correctly for you. This has been known to interfere with our gallery tool.

According to various rumours lately, both PowerColor and Sapphire are working on ‘Nano Editions' of RX Vega. We can only confirm that PowerColor has one. According to the German site Hardwareluxx, PowerColor's RX Vega Nano Edition will use the Vega 56 GPU core and will have an official launch at Computex.

The RX Vega Nano is similar to the Fury Nano in size and the cooler is also very similar. There is a black shroud, and a single fan on top for cooling. The card is powered by a 6-pin and an 8-pin PCIe connector, for I/O you'll get three DisplayPort connections and one HDMI.

We don't have any details on pricing or a release date just yet, but hopefully we'll find out more at Computex.

KitGuru Says: We've been sitting on this one for a while, but it looks like we'll finally be getting some official details on the RX Vega Nano soon.

It took some time, but over the last few months we've seen custom RX Vega cards finally making their way out. On the Sapphire side, we've seen Nitro+ versions of the RX Vega 64 and 56. Now this week, Sapphire is expanding its lineup with the RX Vega 56 Pulse Edition, opting for a dual-fan custom cooler.

The Sapphire RX Vega 56 Pulse has been designed for gamers specifically. The Dual-X cooler makes use of a large heatsink that extends past the length of the PCB to increase heat dissipation. There is a copper base on the GPU core and a set of four 8mm heatpipes extending through the heatsink. VRM cooling is handled by an additional heatsink unit with a 6mm heatpipe. On top of the cooler, there are two dual-ball bearing fans that can run at speeds up to 1650 RPM to maintain airflow and with the Intelligent Fan Control III system in place, these fans won't spin up until your GPU needs it. The threshold for fans to start spinning is 55 degrees Celsius, so when your PC is idle, your GPU won't generate any noise.

Do note if you are using an adblocker, then the images above may fail to load. This has been known to interfere with our image tools.

The Pule Edition doesn't clock quite as high as the Nitro+ but out of the box you can expect speeds of 1512MHz on the core. The 8GB of HBM2 memory is clocked at 800MHz by default but you can check if there is any wiggle room there through overclocking.

A switch on top of the card will let you switch between BIOS modes. There is a performance preset and an efficiency preset, with the latter, you'll get lower clock speeds to reduce power draw and temperatures. The former will give you the speeds mentioned above.

The Sapphire RX Vega 56 Pulse edition will begin shipping on the 12th of February. We haven't been given exact pricing just yet, but given the current state of the GPU market, MSRPs don't currently mean much anyway, so you'll be better off checking at retailers once stock starts to come in.

KitGuru Says: It's nice to see more custom-cooled Vega cards making their way onto the market, even if it is a bit late at this point. Are any of you looking to pick up a new graphics card soon? Are you planning on going with Vega, or are you eager to wait and see what's coming next?

Last year, Intel and AMD made its long rumored collaboration official, with Intel announcing that its new Core-H series processors would use on-board graphics from AMD's Radeon team. Since then, things have grown quiet, but this week, Intel began listing the specs for its Core i7-8809G CPU, featuring RX Vega.

The Core i7-8809G is a quad-core processor and is listed among Intel's ‘unlocked' processors on Intel's official website. The list is sorted by maximum TDP, so the Core i7-8809G is found sitting between the Core i5-7640X and the Core i7-8700K. Intel's Core-X series i5 uses 112 watts at maximum, while the new Core i7-8809G is targeting 100 watts. The 8700K sits below this with a 95W maximum TDP.

The Core i7-8809G will have four cores and eight threads and will support dual channel DDR4 memory up to 2400MHz. For graphics, the Intel HD Graphics 630 will be present, but crucially, so will a Radeon RX Vega M GH chip, which will offer greatly improved performance.

Some final little tidbits from the listing include a 3.1GHz clock speed and 8MB of cache. The 8809G is currently believed to be the highest performing chip to come out of the Intel/AMD collaboration, with other CPUs including the Core i7-8705G and the 8706G. There might be more SKUs in development, but these are the ones we know about for the time being.

KitGuru Says: Currently these processors are slated to hit the market at some point before the end of March, so we should begin hearing more soon. Perhaps we'll get a quick look at what these chips can do at CES next week.

A few weeks after we first saw leaks of the card, XFX has officially announced the RX Vega 64 and RX Vega 56 Double Edition. Both cards come with a newly designed custom cooler and dual 8-pin power connectors, though out of the box clock speeds seem to match the reference RX Vega models.

The Double Edition cooler certainly stands out due to its rather odd shape. There is a cut out in the center of the black shroud, two large cooling fans, a heatsink and plenty of heatpipes. The cooler extends across the entire length of the card. For I/O, you get three DisplayPort connections and one HDMI 2.0 connector.

Both cards come with the same specs as the reference Vega GPUs according to Videocardz. So you get a 1247MHz base speed on the 64 with a 1546MHz boost. Meanwhile on the Vega 56 card you get an 1156MHz base clock and a 1471MHz boost clock. Both come with 8GB of HBM2 memory.

The other main difference between Vega 56 and Vega 64 is the number of Cores and TMUs. The 64 comes with 4096 cores and 256 TMUs, while the 56 comes with 3584 cores and 224 TMUs.

There is no word on pricing or a release date just yet, but these should hit the market relatively soon.

KitGuru Says: Custom versions of the RX Vega are finally starting to roll out. Are any of you considering upgrading to Vega at this point? Are you still hoping to see more custom cooled versions first?

This month, Futuremark began rolling out the Cyan Room benchmark, its latest virtual reality focussed benchmark for the VRMark software. We've known for a while that AMD has been pushing for higher VR performance on its GPUs but it seems that Vega really shines in this particular benchmark.

In an email sent to us this morning, the folks at Radeon pointed out that the RX Vega 64 and RX Vega 56 perform particularly well in Cyan Room, beating out the GTX 1080 and GTX 1070Ti. The RX 580 also edges out the GTX 1060. You can see both benchmark graphs below:

The RX Vega 64 managed to score 170 frames per second in this benchmark, while the RX Vega 56 scored 162 frames per second. Meanwhile, the GTX 1080 sits at 140 frames per second, the GTX 1070Ti at 130 frames per second. The RX 580 battles it out against the GTX 1060, with 103 frames per second and 82 frames per second respectively.

Notably, the GTX 1080Ti is missing from this list, it is safe to assume that Nvidia's top-end gaming card would dominate the chart. Still, given that the RX Vega 64 targets the GTX 1080 specifically, this isn't a bad result for AMD as far as VR gaming is concerned.

FutureMark's 3DMark, VRMark and PCMark 10 softwares are currently all part of the Steam Autumn sale.

KitGuru Says: Do many of you currently use your system for virtual reality? How important is VR performance when it comes to deciding which GPU to buy?

RX Vega has been out on the market in reference form for months now, but it has taken a while for third-party board partners to roll out custom versions. ASUS was the first with its Vega Strix model. Since then, we have seen that XFX is working on one of its own and now PowerColor is also joining the race with an RX Vega 64 Red Devil card.

Videocardz managed to get the exclusive on this one, showing off the Red Devil card in all of its glory. This version of the RX Vega 64 has three fans mounted onto a huge heatsink covering the entire PCB. The PCB in this case stretches across the full length of the card, rather than being extended by additional material.

The Red Devil card comes with three different BIOS versions built in, which you can swap between using the physical switch on the card. There is an additional switch on the card to control the Red Devil logo backlighting too.

The PCB hasn't changed much over the reference design. The report notes that the same number of V-core phases are used and connectivity options have been changed to include two DisplayPorts and two HDMI ports. The PCB is also slightly wider than the reference version to accommodate the big cooler.

Pricing and availability information is still up in the air but apparently, we should see this card launch in early December.

KitGuru Says: The PowerColor Red Devil cards have always been pretty solid and it looks like this won't be an exception. It will certainly be interesting to see how far Vega 64 can be pushed with such a massive cooler mounted on to it.

It has been a couple of months since the RX Vega 56 and RX Vega 64 first hit the market in reference form. Stock levels and pricing seem to have calmed down a bit and now, it looks like we are starting to see some more custom-cooled variants pop up on the web. This week, XFX began teasing its own custom RX Vega card, which may end up being the second one on the market, following the Asus ROG Strix edition.

XFX exclusively makes AMD graphics cards these days. The AIB has put together an all-new custom cooler for RX Vega. The shroud comes in an odd shape with a dip in the middle of the plastic conjoining the two fans. You can see what the cooler looks like in the images below:

The backplate design has a distinct look to it and the heatsink in use for the GPU seems quite hefty. The PCB doesn’t run the full length of the card, but with the heatsink and backplate in place, it’s hard to really notice.

The only problem here is that there is no release date. XFX has also not revealed clock speeds, so we don’t know exactly when this custom RX Vega will hit the market, or whether it will be marketed as the ‘Black Edition’ or something new entirely.

KitGuru Says: Since launch, only one other custom RX Vega has hit the market, which is a shame. Custom cooled versions could have been great for reducing temperatures, raising clock speeds and giving us a better outlook on Vega’s performance. Hopefully this XFX model is just the start though, with more to follow.

While AMD’s RX Vega line managed to offer competition to Nvidia’s esteemed GTX 1080, the company’s range failed to scratch the performance of the GTX 1080 Ti. In a surprising turn of events, however, AMD’s flagship RX Vega 64 has managed to topple the king from its castle, outperforming the ultra-high-end card in Microsoft’s Forza 7.

According to tests from Computer Base, custom benchmark scenarios indicate that the RX Vega 64 can, in fact, beat Nvidia’s high-end selection of graphics cards. The tests were conducted at maximum graphical settings, set at 8x MSAA and included each respective company’s game-optimised drivers.

At FullHD, 1080p resolution, both the RX Vega 64 and GTX 1080 perform like a dream, however AMD’s card offers up to 32 percent higher frame rates over its Nvidia counterpart. When compared with Nvidia’s highest consumer offering, the RX Vega 64 has an increase of 23 percent over the GTX 1080 Ti, marking the first instance in a long time that AMD has taken a clear lead in the enthusiast market.

Interestingly, the same can be said about the RX Vega 56, which dominates its direct competitor with a 38 percent frame increase over the GTX 1070, but also dominates the GTX 1080 Ti at 11 percent higher.

Not until competing at 4K does the GTX 1080 Ti resume its throne with an 8 percent lead over the RX Vega 64. Nvidia has gone on record to say that these results are in fact accurate and not due to anything impeding performance.

It seems that the RX Vega architecture is just more suited here than Nvidia’s Pascal, with AMD cards making more use of DX12 features than its competition. This might be the start of the RX Vega line coming into bloom after its underwhelming launch, however, we won’t be able to tell until more DX12 titles arrive on the market.

KitGuru Says: Despite running Nvidia, I’d love to see AMD start putting pressure on the green team to balance prices and performance across the market. Hopefully we can see these same benchmarking results appear in more titles soon. Do you own an RX Vega card? How is its performance on the games that you play?

Update: It seems that Gigabyte ended up receiving a new batch of RX Vega64 chips just in the knick of time, as updated reports have shown Gigabyte's first custom-cooled Vega GPU in the flesh. You can find the update, HERE

Original Story: Over the last couple of weeks we have been hearing increasing reports surrounding the lack of RX Vega 64 custom cards from board partners. Anonymous AiB reps have previously said that lack of supply was to blame, with stocks not expected until around mid-October. Now, it seems that at least one board partner, Gigabyte, won't be making a custom RX Vega 64 at all.

According to a report over at Tom's Hardware, while Gigabyte may still consider making an RX Vega 56, the company has ruled out a custom RX Vega 64 at this point. MSI also appears to be mulling over its plans for custom Vega. According to the report, both Gigabyte and MSI are now focusing their efforts on the upcoming GTX 1070Ti instead.

Rumours first began circulating about a GTX 1070Ti a short while ago but it seems to be picking up steam now. Technical details and performance numbers are still non-existent for the time being, but apparently, we should see an announcement from Nvidia in October.

ASUS is still going to be putting out an RX Vega 64 Strix Edition but we are unsure when the card will begin shipping. Reviewers already have their hands on it but it seems retailers are still waiting.

KitGuru Says: At this point, if you really want an RX Vega 64, it seems you may not have many options to choose from outside of the reference models. Are any of you still waiting for custom Vega cards before upgrading?

The post Custom RX Vega cards could still be a month away first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
At this point in time, the RX Vega 64 has been out on the market for well over a month, though only in reference form. So far, we have only seen one add-in board partner announce a custom RX Vega GPU and even then, the mid-September release date has been missed. So when can we expect custom-cooled versions of RX Vega to start popping up? Well according to a report this week, we could be waiting quite a while.

Back when Asus first announced the ROG Strix RX Vega 64, we covered it and were expecting a mid-September release date. Reviewers (ourselves included) have even had hands on time with the Strix card. Unfortunately, it has yet to actually hit the market. Asus is still ahead of other board partners though, as the likes of Sapphire, MSI and Gigabyte have yet to announce custom models for RX Vega at all.

The folks over at hardware.fr reached out to some of AMD's board partners to try and uncover some answers. the replies are unfortunately kept anonymous but it seems that one particular AIB has nothing to announce, while another has yet to receive delivery of chips. No dates are set yet but the source said that a launch may not be possible before mid-October.

Given the lack of announcements surrounding custom Vega cards, I do buy in to the idea that we could be waiting a while for them to show up. Hopefully we will hear more over the next couple of weeks.

KitGuru Says: I have been quite surprised by the lack of news surrounding custom Vega cards. It does seem like there is a hold-up behind the scenes. Are any of you currently planning your next GPU upgrade? Are you waiting on custom Vega cards to show up?

AMD’s RX Vega 56 hit the market earlier this week, bringing Vega down to a more affordable price while still offering solid performance, particularly against Nvidia’s GTX 1070. Now, it looks like those willing to tinker with their GPU may be able to unlock even more performance, as a user has successfully managed to flash the RX Vega 56 with the Vega 64 BIOS, bringing along a decent performance boost.

A user by the name of ‘KDtree’ over on the Chiphell forums and translated by Videocardz took on the experiment and shared his findings. After successfully flashing Vega 56 with the Vega 64 BIOS, performance tests show the latter being just two percent slower than Vega 64. This boost wasn’t achieved by unlocking more cores on the GPU, as that could not be done but the BIOS change does impact clock speeds, which is where the improvements came in.

While using the stock BIOS, the RX Vega 56 comes with a boost clock speed of 1471MHz and a memory clock of 800MHz. Meanwhile, the Vega 64 BIOS boosts this up to 1545MHz on the core and 945MHz on the memory. With this 75MHz increase in speed, the RX Vega 56 comes in at just two percent slower than its bigger brother. If you overclock further and can hit 1630MHz on the core, then the RX Vega 56 will surpass Vega 64.

The user put their modded RX Vega 56 through its paces on Fire Strike Extreme. With its standard BIOS, Vega 56 managed a GPU score of 9,452. With the BIOS mod on, this was bumped up to 10,340, meanwhile a standard Vega 64 can score 10,479 points. If you overclock the modded Vega 56 to 1630MHz, its score jumps up to 11,322.

KitGuru Says: Given that Vega ships with two BIOS’s on board, flashing it shouldn’t be too dangerous, though it will absolutely void your warranty. Alternatively, you could just try your luck with a hefty overclock to achieve similar results. Have any of you picked up a Vega GPU yet? Did you go for the 64 or the 56?

While AMD initially planned to launch RX Vega in high volume, it seems that retailers in many countries have been struggling to get stock in. While we know that more stock is coming in, we could be stuck with a shortage until October according to a report this week.

According to sources speaking with DigiTimes, Vega’s intricate design has resulted in low yield rates. According to the report, the issue arises while trying to integrate HBM and package it all together. The complicated board design makes Vega harder to manufacture and as a result, means less stock.

With that in mind, vendors are apparently only able to receive limited quantities of Vega GPUs, so shortages could last until October. From the sounds of it, this could potentially have an impact on third-party custom cards too. So far, we have only seen ASUS announce the RX Vega64 Strix, with other major AiBs yet to unveil their designs.

KitGuru Says: If this report is accurate, then it could be rather difficult for some to get hold of Vega for another month. What I’m particularly interested in finding out is how this is going to impact AiB plans as so far, there has been a lack of custom cooled GPU announcements.

Definitive answers are still nowhere to be found.

Yesterday, a lot of concerns surrounding AMD’s RX Vega64 pricing came to a head when new details surrounding AMD’s pricing strategy came to light. Right now, multiple sources are claiming that AMD’s previously announced $499 price tag was only ever intended to be applied to a small amount of ‘launch’ cards. Now today, AMD has finally responded to requests for comment and unfortunately, the company’s carefully crafted PR speech hasn’t really given us any answers.

For those who missed the update to our original story earlier this afternoon, you can read AMD’s full response below:

“Radeon RX Vega64 demand continues to exceed expectations. AMD is working closely with its partners to address this demand. Our initial launch quantities included standalone Radeon RX Vega64 at SEP of $499, Radeon RX Vega64 Black Packs at SEP of $599, and Radeon RX Vega64 Aqua Packs at SEP of $699. We are working with our partners to restock all SKUs of Radeon RX Vega64 including the standalone cards and Gamer Packs over the next few weeks, and you should expect quantities of Vega to start arriving in the coming days.”

This is a carefully crafted statement that can be interpreted in multiple ways, with much of it being ambiguous in order to avoid saying anything definitive.

So what can we take away from this statement? Well in my opinion, the main focus should be on the third sentence as this is where things start to get dicey.

“Our initial launch quantities included standalone Radeon RX Vega64 at SEP of $499, Radeon RX Vega64 Black Packs at SEP of $599, and Radeon RX Vega64 Aqua Packs at SEP of $699.”

This is AMD stating specifically that “initial launch quantities” of Vega64 did include cards at $499, $599 and $699 price points. However, it does not confirm that AMD will continue to use this pricing going forward. It simply states that at launch, those prices existed.

The very next sentence says: “We are working with our partners to restock all SKUs of Radeon RX Vega64, including standalone cards and Gamer Packs over the next few weeks”.

This is not AMD saying that GPUs will be back in stock at their original price points, it is merely AMD saying that GPUs will be back in stock. It appears to be intentionally ambiguous, which ultimately means that this statement provided us with no real, definitive answers.

KitGuru Says: Given the amount of questions raised by yesterday’s chat with Overclockers UK Andrew Gibson, this statement is disappointing. I honestly hope that this isn't going to be AMD's final word on the matter.

Many of our readers are in the same boat.

The post RX Vega shortage in UK, despite AMD’s previous claims of shipping good volume first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
AMD's RX Vega launch finally took place earlier this week after much delay. So far, we have heard from distributors that around a total of 500 cards hit the UK on launch and as we reported earlier this week, most RX Vega64 cards sold out on day one, with prices rising between £550 and £600.

In the days following launch, many KitGuru readers have contacted us, asking if we know when stock might be back at healthy levels in the UK and if prices will stabilise. We have followed up with AMD by sending a few emails on VEGA and are awaiting a response. From what we have been told, we can expect a statement from AMD in the coming days. For the time being, we aren't sure when higher volumes of the card will hit UK retail or prices will come back down closer to MSRP.

We are a little surprised that AMD seem to sold out so quickly though, as just a couple of weeks before launch, Chris Hook, Senior Director of AMD Marketing and PR, spoke with the American publication HardOCP on their YouTube Channel and said:

Part of the reason thats its taken us a little longer to launch Vega – I'll be honest about that – is that we wanted to make sure we're launching with good volume. We have to compensate — for things like coin miners as they are going to want to get their hands on these. So we believe that we are launching with a volume that will ensure that gamers can get their hands on them. Thats what is important to us.”

You can hear that quote in the interview with HARDOCP, which you can find above. The statement is made around 48 seconds in. Essentially, Chris tried to explain that RX Vega's extensive delay was to ensure stock was available in good volume at launch. Unfortunately, this doesn't appear to have been the case, with so few cards arriving in the UK at launch and GPUs being sold out almost everywhere. Some cards will have been reserved for AMD's ‘Radeon Pack' initiative, which bundles a GPU with a Ryzen CPU and motherboard or a FreeSync monitor. However, these packs also appear to be sold out in the UK.

KitGuru says: We do hope that this launch smooths out for AMD, particularly since prior to this, pricing was expected to hit the $499/£450 mark. With the current state of things at retail, early adopters are paying well over MSRP to get their hands on one of these boards. The best we can hope for is more stock to meet demand, then prices will begin to drop.

Earlier this week, we heard that AMD intentionally pushed the release of the RX Vega back a bit to ensure that there were enough graphics cards to go around at launch. A big reason for this strategy was potential demand from miners. Now it seems that demand may be spurred along as the RX Vega has been touted as “insanely good” for mining.

Over on the Overclockers UK forum, Gibbo posted about Vega’s hash rate being somewhere between 70 and 100MH/s. He got this figure from an add-in board partner, which makes sense given those companies are one of the few places to already have RX Vega GPUs in-hand. Gibbo did add that it is possible his source was “smoking the BS pipe” but if the hash rate turns out to be accurate, then the RX Vega could be in very high demand.

For comparison sake, the RX 580 is capable of around 25 MH/s, while the GTX 1080Ti can hit around 32MH/s. With that in mind, the RX Vega could be one of the more lucrative mining GPUs, though that won’t matter much if power usage is significantly higher.

Still, to try and avoid miners snapping up all of the stock, the folks over at OCUK are currently brainstorming ways to ensure gamers can grab the RX Vega at MSRP without miners nabbing all the stock and forcing price hikes early on. There are no final details in place yet but we’ll see exactly what’s going on once retail availability lands in a couple of weeks.

KitGuru Says: This mining resurgence has been a pain for those looking to upgrade their graphics cards. Fortunately, it sounds like companies are all very aware of it at this point and are actively trying to compensate for it, whether it be through a boost in stock or limitations on how many GPUs one person can order.

AMD finally unveiled the RX Vega 64 and RX Vega 56 a few days ago but official reviews won’t be going up for a little while longer. While reviewers won’t be able to share their findings, a source this week claiming to have an RX Vega 56 in hand has revealed some gaming benchmark numbers up against a GTX 1070, showing performance in DOOM, Battlefield 1 and more.

A report on Tweaktown claims to have the scoop on RX Vega 56 benchmarks. The site says it has ‘an industry source’ with access to the RX Vega 56 already, who tested the GPU in DOOM, Battlefield 1, Civilization VI and Call of Duty Infinite Warfare, all at 2560×1440 up against a GTX 1070.

In Battlefield 1, the ‘Ultra’ preset was used, with the RX Vega 56 reportedly scoring just over 95 frames per second. The GTX 1070 on the other hand managed 72 frames per second. While the report doesn’t explicitly state that DX12 was used, this appears to be more in line with GTX 1070 DX12 scores, rather than DX11.

In DOOM, the RX Vega is listed as scoring j101.2 frames per second with the GTX 1070 at 84.6 frames per second. This game was run at Ultra with 8x TSAA but unfortunately, it does not state whether or not the game was run in Vulkan, DX12 or DX11. Either way though, it’s another win for AMD’s new $399 Vega.

COD:IW was running on its High preset, in this game, the RX Vega 56 is listed as scoring 99.9 frames per second while the GTX 1070 managed 92.1 frames per second. Finally, in Civ VI, Vega got 85.1 frames per second while the GTX 1070 scored 72.2 frames per second.

Now it’s worth pointing out that we can’t verify these results just yet, so we won’t know how accurate these numbers are until review samples come in. However, if these scores turn out to be right on the money, then AMD’s RX Vega 56 could overthrow the GTX 1070.

KitGuru Says: If these RX Vega 56 scores are the real deal, then AMD will be in a very good position to compete with the GTX 1070. The RX Vega 56 is the cut down version too, meaning the RX Vega 64 should be even stronger and will hopefully prove to be a good competitor to the GTX 1080. Over the last few months, crypto-currency mining has had a massive resurgence, which has caused a lot of issues for those building gaming PCs. Not only have prices become inflated, particularly for mainstream GPUs like the RX 500 series, but stock levels have been very low in some countries. With that in mind, there is some concern that RX Vega will be snapped up by miners. Fortunately, it seems like AMD has thought about that ahead of time, promising that it will have enough cards to sell to gamers.

In an interview this week with HardOCP, AMD’s Chris Hook mentioned that one of the reasons the RX Vega took so long to get to market was simply down to the fact that the company wanted to ensure it had enough GPUs to go around at launch: “Part of the reason it’s taken us a little longer to launch Vega, and I’ll be honest about that is that we wanted to make sure we were launching with good volume”, Hook said.

He then added that the company needed to compensate for other factors in the market beyond PC gamers, like coin-miners: “Obviously we’ve got to compensate for things like coin-miners, they’re going to want to get their hands on these. We believe we’re launching with a volume that will ensure gamers can get their hands on them, and that’s what’s important to us.”

AMD’s RX Vega will start hitting retail on the 14th of August. Then in September, we will begin seeing third-party cards like the Asus ROG Strix RX Vega. Hopefully when the time comes, stock won’t be an issue for those wanting to get their hands on one.

KitGuru Says: Coin mining has become a problem in the GPU world over the last couple of months. Many have been frustrated by price hikes and low stock. Fortunately, it sounds like AMD is aiming to ensure this isn’t something that will affect the RX Vega launch. Are any of you planning on upgrading to the RX Vega? How do you feel about the recent surge in miners buying up GPUs?

There has been a barrage of AMD news over the last 24 hours, ranging from Ryzen Threadripper to RX Vega. Now that AMD’s next graphics card has finally launched, third-party board partners are starting to show off their own versions. ASUS is the first to show off its own custom card, announcing the Strix RX Vega 64, featuring the tried and true triple fan cooler.

The Strix RX Vega 64 is as you would expect, packed with ROG features, including MaxContact, which uses an enhanced copper heat-spreader that provides ten times flatter surface and twice as much contact area with the GPU compared to traditional heat spreaders. The idea is that this should result in quicker heat transfer, which when paired with massive heatsink and three 0dB fans, should result in much lower temperatures compared to a reference air cooler.

ASUS is still using a 100 percent automated production process for its GPUs, an industry-first that helps the company ensure a specific standard of quality and longevity. According to the company’s own numbers, switching to this process has improved its GPU reliability by 30 percent while also being more environmentally friendly by eliminating harsh chemicals and reducing power consumption.

Unfortunately, specific clock speeds aren’t listed but we do know that the reference air cooled RX Vega comes with a base clock 1247MHz and a boost of 1546MHz. Meanwhile, the RX Vega Water Cooled edition can boost up to 1677MHz. Typically, the ROG Strix GPU cooler is strong, so I expect we’ll see pretty good out of the box speeds with some headroom left over for those who like to overclock themselves. As far as connectivity goes, the Strix RX Vega 64 comes with two HDMI 2.0 ports, two DisplayPort 1.4 ports and one DVI-D port.

The ROG Strix RX Vega 64 will be available worldwide from some time in September. Pricing is still TBD but if you want to get your hands on Vega a little earlier, then the liquid cooled edition will be available from the 14th of August.

KitGuru Says: The ASUS ROG graphics cards are usually solid, though they do tend to be on the more expensive side. Are any of you planning on picking up an RX Vega? Are you going to be holding out for custom cooled cards like this one, or will you be going with a reference design model?

AMD will be launching the RX Vega in just a couple of days time but we have already been given a decent idea of performance ahead of time. Now today, we have our first look at two out of the three versions of Vega in the flesh, one featuring a standard reference cooler, one with liquid cooling and another with a limited edition cooler.

First up is the Radeon RX Vega 64 (reference) on the left, which is set to be the cheapest of the bunch. It features the same stock cooler design as the reference RX 500 series graphics cards but with two 8-pin power connectors, three DisplayPort connections and one HDMI.

Then there is the Radeon RX Vega 64 (Limited Edition) on the right, which is the same version of Vega previously spotted in a leaked Chinese teaser. It has a brushed aluminium shroud, a blower fan, the red Vega logo on the front and finally, a little ‘R’ light in the corner, similarly to the Vega Frontier Edition. Both images were leaked via Videocardz, in case you couldn’t tell by the watermark.

There will be an RX Vega 64 Liquid Edition, which will likely feature the same style shroud as the Vega Limited Edition. However, like the Fury X, it will come with a preinstalled water-block. This will be the most expensive version of the RX Vega but we have yet to see if this cooler will provide additional headroom for overclocking. Back when the Fury X launched, overclocking was essentially impossible beyond 50 to 75MHz, so it will be interesting to see if AMD has addressed that this time around.

KitGuru Says: The RX Vega is just a few days away and while we have a rough idea of performance, we have yet to hear anything about price. How much do you guys think the RX Vega should sell for?

We have been hearing bits and pieces of information surrounding AMD's RX Vega graphics card for months. It has been a long road but we are nearing the end now with SIGGRAPH kicking off this week, at which AMD will finally launch the RX Vega. It will be a short while longer before we see proper reviews but in the meantime, early benchmarks continue to appear online, giving us a clear idea of what to expect.

This time around, an RX Vega 3DMark FireStrike run has been obtained by Videocardz, showing the graphics card on more equal footing with the GTX 1080, unlike previous benchmarks which put it slightly ahead. Rumour has it at there may be up to three different Vega SKUs, so it is unclear which one we are seeing results for here.

The benchmark shows Vega running with a 1630MHz core clock and a 945MHz memory clock. As expected, this is an 8GB HBM2 card, whereas the Vega Frontier Edition carries a full 16GB of HBM 2. In FireStrike this card managed a graphics score of 22,330, meanwhile MSI's GTX 1080 Gaming X typically scores around 22,585. This puts RX Vega close to the GTX 1080 and comfortably ahead of the GTX 1070, though there is a large gap between it and the GTX 1080Ti.

Obviously, none of these early benchmarks have been verified yet. However, we do know that at recent fan events, AMD was specifically showing the RX Vega up against the GTX 1080, so we already know what performance level the company is targeting. We should find out more towards the end of this week, when the RX Vega is officially unveiled.

KitGuru Says: Hopefully reviewers can get their hands on RX Vega fairly soon, it will be nice to finally see the record set straight after 8 months of rumours, leaks and teasing.

In preparation for the RX Vega's official launch at the end of this month, AMD has decided to take its latest graphics card out on a mini tour. During these small fan events, AMD is showing off the RX Vega to the public for the first time and demoing it up against a GTX 1080, essentially confirming which part of the market AMD is targeting with Vega.

AMD is taking the RX Vega out on a two-step tour, which started in Budapest yesterday. The event featured closed gaming systems and were set up for a ‘blind test', which unfortunately means performance was only measured by perception, with no frame rate counters on display. Still, the fact that AMD is putting the RX Vega up against the GTX 1080 is very telling.

This isn't the first time that we have heard that the RX Vega will target the GTX 1080. The most recent performance leaks for Vega put it at a 15 percent advantage over the GTX 1080 but couldn't quite meet GTX 1080Ti levels.

During the tests at the Budapest event, AMD was showing both graphics cards running Battlefield 1 and Sniper Elite 4, all on a 3440×1440 ultra-wide display. The final stop on the Vega tour will be Portland between the 21st and 23rd of July. Then, a week later we should see the official unveiling at SIGGRAPH, with the RX Vega shipping out in August.

KitGuru Says: While it's a shame that we didn't get solid performance numbers out of this event, it does seem to make it clear that AMD is targeting the GTX 1080 with the RX Vega. Have many of you been waiting for Vega?

AMD is just a few weeks away from finally launching the RX Vega but it looks like there will be more than one card on the way, with reports this week indicating that there will be three different SKUs. Right now, there are supposedly three Vega cards in the works, codenamed Vega XT, Vega XTX and Vega XL.

Apparently we can expect the RX Vega XTX to be the top of the pile, featuring 4096 shader units, 8GB of HBM2 and 375W board power. This particular model features an all-in-one liquid cooler, similarly to the Fury X. From there, the RX Vega XT features the same core specs but will feature an air cooler instead while using 285W board power. The RX Vega XL has an unconfirmed amount of HBM2 memory but is said to feature 3584 shader units instead. This one will also feature an air cooler and use 285W of power.

The initial report here came from a source speaking with the German site, 3DCenter, which reported the three Vega codenames, alongside shader units and TDPs. Videocardz then spoke with its own sources to confirm the information, adding that a version of the RX Vega with 16GB of HBM2 hasn't been ruled out just yet, though in my opinion it seems unlikely based on the current information we have.

AMD's official RX Vega unveiling is still set to take place at SIGGRAPH on the 30th of July. The latest performance leaks seem to indicate that at least one RX Vega GPU will pull ahead of a GTX 1080 but won't match the GTX 1080Ti.

KitGuru Says: With the RX Vega launch so close, we are bound to see a few leaks during the build up. Hopefully once all is said and done, Vega will meet expectations.

Earlier this week, AMD finally confirmed that it would be launching the RX Vega graphics card at the end of this month. The reveal is set to take place at SIGGRAPH, which kicks off on the 30th of July. However, we won't have to wait that long to get a better idea of performance as a fresh leak this week has shown AMD's RX Vega GPU benchmarked and pitted against Nvidia's high-end Pascal lineup.

Over on the 3DMark database, a new benchmark entry was discovered under device ID ‘687F:C1', which we know to be one of the upcoming RX Vega GPUs. This particular model comes with a 1630MHz core clock with an 1890MHz clock speed on the HBM2. While running 3DMark 11, this particular RX Vega version scored 31,874 points, which is around 15 percent faster than a GTX 1080 but still some ways off the performance of a GTX 1080Ti.

Still, this is a big improvement over past benchmark leaks, which pinned the RX Vega closer to a GTX 1070 in performance. The extra tweaking over the last few months appears to have allowed AMD to squeeze a significant amount of extra performance out.

That said, it is important to note that this is still an early benchmark, so it may not end up fully representing the final product. This was also a synthetic benchmark, rather than a true in-game test. Still, with RX Vega now so close to launching, the leaks should start to be more accurate.

KitGuru Says: This launch has been a long time coming and there have been plenty of ups and downs along the way. Have many of you been waiting for RX Vega before upgrading? What do you think of the current performance projections?

While we finally got our first taste of the Vega architecture last week in the form of the Radeon Vega Frontier Edition, many are still holding out for AMD's gaming-focussed GPUs to return. The RX Vega has been on the way for a long time now but there is finally light at the end of the tunnel as AMD has confirmed that the RX Vega will be unveiled at the end of July.

It was already widely thought that AMD would be launching the RX Vega at SIGGRAPH 2017 in late July. However, over on the Radeon Twitter account, AMD confirmed its plans:

Right now, current rumours suggest that the first custom-cooled Radeon RX Vega graphics cards will start shipping in early August, a little later than AMD's reference GPU launch.

The exact date of AMD's RX Vega announcement is unknown but we do know that SIGGRAPH 2017 takes place from the 30th of July until the 3rd of August. I'd assume AMD will be making its announcement on the first day but you never know.

KitGuru Says: The RX Vega will be here in less than one month's time, which is exciting to finally say. There has been a lot of anticipation and build-up surrounding AMD's Vega launch so hopefully there will be a decent payoff for those that chose to wait.

While gamers do have to wait a bit longer to get their hands on the upcoming Radeon RX Vega, for Radeon Vega Frontier Edition is launching before the end of the month for the professional crowd. AMD promised a late June launch for this GPU and it seems they will be keeping to that, with the card going up for pre-order on a few websites.

Originally, the Vega Frontier Edition was up on Scan here in the UK but the page has since been removed. At the time though, the Liquid Cooled version was priced at £1,656 while the air cooled version was priced at £1,139.

While the Scan page no longer exists, NewEgg does have its own pre-order listing up over in the US. Over there, the Liquid cooled version of the Vega Frontier Edition goes for $1,799.99, meanwhile the air cooled version goes $1,199.99. Both of these GPUs are expected to begin shipping by the 3rd of July.

Here are the Radeon Vega Frontier Edition specs:

  • 16GB HBM2 memory.
  • 4096 Stream Processors.
  • 64 Compute Units.
  • 13.1 TFLOPS FP32 performance.
  • 26.2 TFLOPS FP16 performance.
  • 3x DisplayPort 1.3, 1x HDMI 2.0.
  • 300W TDP (Air-Cooled) 375W TDP (Liquid-Cooled).

Still no concrete news on the launch of the RX Vega but we are currently expected a launch at the end of July, with third-party cooled GPUs expected to begin shipping in early August.

KitGuru Says: The Radeon Vega Frontier Edition is going to be a very expensive, though that's not entirely unexpected given the aim at the professional market. I do wonder why there is such a huge price gap between the liquid-cooled and air-cooled version though.

It has been quite some time since we've heard any news surrounding AMD's launch of the RX Vega. From what we know so far, the GPU is set to launch in late July and according to new reports this week, add-in board partners will begin shipping their own custom versions in early August, with two tiers set to tackle the GTX 1080.

This particular news comes from HWBattle, with a report claiming that the top of the line Vega 10 and a cut-down Vega 11 GPU are set to be shipped to board partners this week. From there,  we can expect to see multiple different cooling solutions for third-party RX Vega graphics cards, in addition to reference designs.

The current rumour is that the RX Vega will be faster than the GTX 1080, though not necessarily the 1080Ti. We have previously heard about three different versions of Vega hitting the market, the Core, Eclipse and Nova, which would combat the GTX 1070, 1080 and 1080Ti respectively.

Obviously, none of this is confirmed just yet but if you've been waiting to put some cash down on an RX Vega, it looks like you can expect custom-cooled cards in August. We will be hanging tight for reviews to get confirmation on performance.

KitGuru Says: The RX Vega is taking a really long time to hit the market. However, there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel at this point. Have any of you been holding out for AMD's Vega launch? Or did Nvidia manage to tempt you with Pascal?

Last week, AMD released a ton of information surrounding upcoming CPUs and GPUs. Unfortunately, the gaming-oriented RX Vega was nowhere to be seen, which was a disappointment to many. However, we now have a better idea as to when the RX Vega is coming, as AMD CEO Lisa Su, has explained the rollout plan for Vega gaming GPUs, but they won't be releasing until after the Frontier Edition.

The Radeon Vega Frontier Edition is a machine learning card with 16GB of HBM2. This particular graphics card is releasing in the second half of June and while this technically counts as a Vega GPU launch in Q2, it wasn't the one many have been hoping for. Speaking during the 45th annual J.P Morgan Global Technology, Media and Telecom Conference, AMD's CEO explained that the company would be “launching Vega across all of the market segments over the next couple of months”.

Here is a direct quote from Lisa Su at the conference as transcribed by wccftech: “We’re very excited about Vega. Vega is a brand new architecture and actually has really the world’s most advanced memory architecture for GPUs. What we did announce at our analyst day was that the first shipping Vega will be the Frontier Edition which will ship with 16GB of memory and will ship towards the latter half of June. You will see the enthusiast gaming platform, the machine learning platform, the professional graphics platform very soon thereafter. And so we will be launching Vega across all of the market segments over the next couple of months.”

So, once the Frontier Edition is out the door later on in June, we can expect other Vega-based cards to follow in quick succession. These will include Radeon Pro GPUs and machine learning cards, in addition to the RX Vega gaming card. Hopefully we get some more solid information about the RX Vega specifically at Computex next week.

KitGuru Says: AMD really does seem to be stretching out this Vega launch but hopefully it will end up being worth the wait. Still, all of the secrecy surrounding specific launch dates isn't exactly doing it any favours. Are any of you still waiting on the RX Vega before making an upgrade?

Update: Last week, we learned that AMD would definitely be heading to Computex this year, with the company's own panel scheduled to take place on the 31st of May. Obviously, we didn't know exactly what would be shown during the panel at the time but last night, Radeon Technology Group head, Raja Koduri, confirmed that the RX Vega would in fact be there.

During an AMA over on the AMD subreddit, Raja Koduri responded to a fan asking when the RX Vega would be available:

“We’ll be showing Radeon RX Vega off at Computex, but it won’t be on store shelves that week. We know how eager you are to get your hands on Radeon RX Vega, and we’re working extremely hard to bring you a graphics card that you’ll be incredibly proud to own. Developing products with billions of transistors and forward-thinking architecture is extremely difficult but extremely rewarding work. We’re working as hard as we can to bring you Radeon RX Vega.”

So, the RX Vega will finally be unveiled in just under two weeks time. However, from the sounds of it, the card won't be going on sale until later on in June.

Original Story: Computex is happening in just a few weeks time, which means tech companies all over the world are going to be preparing some announcements. Interestingly enough, AMD this week has confirmed when its conference will be taking place and if recent rumours are anything to go by, we should get some more news on the RX Vega and possibly even AMD's HEDT Ryzen CPUs, codenamed ‘Whitehaven'.

The conference will be hosted by AMD CEO, Lisa Su and according to the Computex invitation, ‘other key AMD executives' will also be there. There is no specific mention of Radeon Technology making an appearance but given that the RX Vega is due to launch any moment between now and the end of June, it seems like a safe bet.

AMD's Computex 2017 conference will be taking place on the 31st of May between 10AM and 11AM in Taipei, Taiwan.

Aside from Vega, there have also been some leaks recently regarding AMD's X399 plans, which may include new 16C/32T Ryzen CPUs. There is also talk of Intel showing off Skylake-X during Computex, so it could be quite a big year for the show.

KitGuru Says: If the leaks and rumours are anything to go by, Computex is shaping up to be quite exciting this year. I'll be hoping for an RX Vega announcement, after all, we do need some renewed competition in the high-end GPU market.

Those of you who have been holding out for AMD's RX Vega launch may not have to wait much longer. This week, a report based on ‘reliable sources within AMD's HQ' has come out, claiming that the initial paper launch for three RX Vega GPUs will occur during AMD's Computex conference, with availability set to follow on the 5th of June.

The initial report comes from the site ‘Digiworthy  (editor's note: we have since learned that this rumour originated from Chinese site Expreview) citing internal sources at AMD. According to the report, there will be three RX Vega GPUs available from the 5th of June with pricing and performance set to compete against the GTX 1070, GTX 1080 and GTX 1080Ti respectively.

The GTX 1070 competitor is said to be called the ‘RX Vega Core' and should carry a price tag of $399. The middle card is known as the RX Vega Eclipse and will cost $499 meanwhile, the RX Vega Nova is a $599 GPU and is said to go up against Nvidia's flagship GTX 1080Ti. Unfortunately outside of that, the report doesn't offer up any additional information.

As with any unverified leak, this information should be treated as rumour and taken with a grain of salt. After all, there isn't much proof to back up the claims being made. That said, it does seem likely that we will finally see Vega launch at Computex.

KitGuru Says: At this point, Vega is just around the corner, so the timing makes sense for a leak. However, Digiworthy is not a site I have come across in the past, so I am being cautious when it comes to this new information. What do you guys think of the supposed RX Vega lineup?
