Samsung and SK Hynix have much to show at the IEEE Solid State Circuit Conference (SSCC). The event, which is scheduled to run from February 18th to the 22nd in San Francisco, will see both companies showing their upcoming memory products, including GDDR7 memory, 16-layer HBM3E stacks, faster LPDDR5T and DDR5 memory, and 280-layer 3D QLC NAND flash.

According to @harukaze5719, Samsung will showcase GDDR7 memory chips at the event, providing updates over what was previously shown by Samsung in 2022. GDDR7 memory is primarily designed for gaming consoles and graphics cards, offering a massive bandwidth increase compared to GDDR6 and GDDR6X. Samsung is likely to introduce a GDDR7 chip that can handle 37 Gbps data throughput and has a density of 16 Gbit (2GB). The high speeds of GDDR7 memory technology are achieved thanks to the use of PAM3 signalling and the four read clock modes that help with power management when the device is not in use. Both NVIDIA and AMD are expected to use GDDR7 in their next-gen GPUs.

In addition to the 37 Gbps GDDR7 memory, Samsung plans to showcase other memory advancements at the 2024 IEEE-SSCC. The company is introducing a new 280-layer 3D QLC NAND flash memory with a density of 1 Tb, which will power the next generation of popular SSDs and smartphone storage. This chip has an area density of 28.5 Gb/mm² and a speed of 3.2 GB/s. To put this into perspective, the fastest 3D NAND flash types that power the current flagship NVMe SSDs use 2.4 GB/s chips.

Samsung is also introducing a new generation DDR5 memory chip with transfer speeds of DDR5-8000 and a density of 32 Gbit (4GB). This device has a symmetric-mosaic DRAM cell design and is based on Samsung's 5th generation 10nm class foundry node, optimised for DRAM products. This chip is remarkable because it enables PC memory manufacturers to produce 32GB and 48GB DIMMs in single-rank configuration with DDR5-8000 speeds, as well as 64GB and 96GB DIMMs in dual-rank configuration.

However, Samsung is not the only Korean memory giant to showcase its latest technology at the next IEEE SSCC. SK Hynix will also be there, demonstrating rival technology across both volatile and non-volatile memory segments. SK Hynix will be the second manufacturer to demonstrate GDDR7 memory after Samsung. The SK Hynix memory has a 16 Gbit density and can handle 35.4 Gbps, which is slightly slower than Samsung's 37 Gbps. SK Hynix, like Samsung, uses PAM3 I/O signalling and a proprietary low-power architecture.

SK Hynix also has a new HBM3E product to show, a new 16-high 48GB (384 Gbit) HBM3E stack architecture that can handle 1280GB/s over a single stack. The stack employs an all-around power TSV (through silicon via) architecture and a 6-phase RDQS (read data queue strobe) method to optimise TSV space. Lastly, SK Hynix sessions will include the first demonstrations of their ambitious LPDDR5T (LPDDR5 Turbo) memory aimed at smartphones, tablets, and thin-and-light laptops. This memory delivers a data throughput of 10.5 Gb/s per pin and a DRAM voltage of 1.05 V. Such high data rates are possible due to the WCK-correction strategy employed, as well as the patented parasitic capacitance reduction technique and a voltage-offset calibrated receiver.

Samsung has published the product page for their upcoming 990 Evo NVMe SSD, revealing all the details about the world's first hybrid PCIe 4.0/PCIe 5.0 SSD.

Despite the five-year gap between the two models, the 990 Evo (via WinFuture) only offers a minor improvement over its predecessor. The 990 Evo does not reach the maximum potential of PCIe 4.0 with four lanes, which is approximately 8,000 MB/s. Instead, Samsung's flagship PCIe 4.0 SSD remains the 990 Pro, with the 990 Evo positioned between it and the 970 Evo Plus.

The most notable feature of the 990 Evo is its support for PCIe 5.0, but only with two lanes (equivalent to four PCIe 4.0 lanes). Although it's unique, the benefit is not clear. PCIe 4.0 SSDs perform well in PCIe 5.0 slots, so there's no technical reason for Samsung to use two PCIe 5.0 lanes on the 990 Evo, more so if its PCIe 4.0 connection does not even limit it.

However, there is one specific situation where these two PCIe 5.0 lanes might be useful. Although the bandwidth for two PCIe 5.0 lanes and four PCIe 4.0 lanes is the same, there is a difference if the data connection only has two lanes. On a PCIe 5.0 interface with two lanes, a PCIe 4.0 SSD can only use two lanes, cutting the maximum bandwidth supported by half. In comparison, the 990 Evo could maintain its typical bandwidth since it can operate those two lanes at PCIe 5.0 speeds.

KitGuru says: Have you ever owned a Samsung SSD? Do you think the 990 Evo will have the same success as its predecessor?

When Samsung announced its 990 Pro SSD family for the retail market last year, it only offered 1TB and 2TB variants, skipping the 4TB option that is usually available for high-end SSDs. Now, the company is poised to right this by releasing a 4TB version this autumn.

In terms of performance, Samsung's 990 Pro 4TB drive offers up to 7,450 MB/s sequential read speed and up to 6,900 MB/s sequential write speed, which is comparable to the 1TB and 2TB versions. In terms of random operations, the SSD achieves 1,400,000 IOPS for reads and 1,550,000 IOPS for writes, matching the performance of other flagship SSDs.

According to Samsung's specifications, the 990 Pro 4TB SSD will be available in two variants: one with a simple graphene heat spreader to maximise compatibility with laptops, and another with a bigger aluminium heatsink to provide constant performance under heavy loads. The drive has a five-year limited guarantee, 4GB of LPDDR4 DRAM cache, and a capacity of 2400 terabytes written (TBW).

The 4TB drive may not appeal to owners of brand new systems based on AMD Ryzen 7000-series or Intel Core 12th and 13th Gen Core series CPUs since Samsung's 990 Pro uses a PCIe 4.0 x4 interface. However, there are many PCs with M.2 slots and a PCIe 4.0 interface that are simply waiting for an update, and a 4TB SSD makes a lot of sense these days considering the cheap pricing of 3D TLC NAND.

Samsung has not yet released the MSRP and release date of the Samsung 990 Pro 4TB SSD, but those details should be revealed soon.

KitGuru says: Seeing as the 990 Pro is already one of the most expensive PCIe 4.0 SSDs on the market, the 4TB option shouldn't come cheap, especially considering that 4TB SSDs are usually more than double the price of their 2TB variants.

Alongside Gamescom this week, Samsung has introduced two new entries to its gaming monitor lineup: the Odyssey Neo G9 57″ (G95NC) and the Odyssey Ark 55″ (G97NC).

The Odyssey Neo G9 57″ is meant to provide a breakthrough visual experience for gamers with its massive screen. Featuring the world's first Dual Ultra-High-Definition (DUHD) screen and a suite of high-speed networking choices, the upcoming monitor has already won the Best of Innovation Award at CES 2023.

The 1000R curvature in the 57″ 32:9 screen is as wide as two 32″ UHD displays, surrounding players with screen area. The Quantum Matrix Technology in the screen drives Samsung's Quantum Mini LED lighting, which has smaller dimming zones and a larger number of dimming zones compared to other monitors. As a consequence, the screen distinguishes between bright and dark regions more clearly, with high contrast and less blooming.

Samsung's new ultrawide monitor has been VESA DisplayHDR 1000-certified, suggesting that brightness can at least peak at 1,000 nits. Moreover, the monitor features a 240Hz refresh rate, a 1ms GTG response time, and supports AMD FreeSync Premium Pro. In addition to a VESA-certified DisplayPort (DP) 2.1, the Odyssey Neo G9 57″ has an HDMI 2.1 interface and a USB hub, allowing gamers to connect all of their gadgets. Features such as PiP and PbP allow several inputs at once, which is then complemented with Auto Source Switch+ to connect to additional devices without switching input sources. Core Lighting+ RGB LEDs can be found on the back, controlled via CoreSync technology.

Samsung is also launching a revision of the Odyssey Ark, introducing new features geared towards connection, ease of use, and performance. Like the original, the monitor will have a 165Hz refresh rate and a 1ms GTG response time.

As for the new things, the Odyssey Ark (G97NC) will support a new Samsung Multi View, which allows users to view up to four inputs on the screen at the same time. It also considerably improves split-screen capabilities, allowing players to have complete control and convenience on a single screen even while utilising external devices. Users may see input from three HDMI ports as well as the DP 1.4 connection concurrently in this mode. The new built-in KVM switch turns the Odyssey Ark into a single command station for multitasking across different devices with just one mouse and keyboard.

The Samsung Odyssey Twitch channel is commemorating the debut of the Odyssey Neo G9 57″ with a special event called Odyssey Evolves in August and September. Throughout the event, streamers will be playing the latest games on the Odyssey Neo G9 57″ and giving away prizes for their followers, including a $10,000 gaming setup featuring the Odyssey Neo G9 57″. The Odyssey Neo G9 will be available for pre-order at Gamescom 2023, while the Odyssey Ark 2023 will be available in September.

Samsung recently announced the completion of the industry's first GDDR7 modules. These will go out to partners this year for verification, propelling future development in the graphics industry.

Following the launch of the industry's first 24 Gbps GDDR6 DRAM in 2022, Samsung is now introducing its 16-gigabit GDDR7 product, which translates to 32 Gbps. With these speeds, Samsung's GDDR7 memory is the company's fastest memory to date. Despite high-speed operations, advances in integrated circuit design and packaging provide increased stability.

Samsung's GDDR7 memory has a 1.5-TBps bandwidth, which is 1.4 times that of GDDR6's 1.1 TBps, and a boosted speed per pin of up to 32 Gbps. These are only made possible thanks to the use of the Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM) 3 signalling mechanism rather than the Non-Return to Zero (NRZ) signalling method used in earlier generations. As such, PAM3 provides for 50% more data transmission than NRZ.

Compared to GDDR6, the current design is 20% more energy efficient thanks to power-saving technologies optimised for the transfer speeds provided by GDDR7 memory. In addition, Samsung provides a low-operating-voltage option for applications that are particularly concerned with power consumption.

In addition to IC architectural optimisations, an epoxy moulding compound (EMC) with high thermal conductivity is employed for the packaging material to reduce heat production. These enhancements minimise heat resistance by 70% when compared to GDDR6, resulting in steady performance even under load.

KitGuru says: Samsung claims the first products using its GDDR7 memory will release later this year, but it's unclear what will be using it. Nvidia and AMD won't likely launch GDDR7-based cards this year, but we're not so sure about Intel.

Amazon Prime Day is officially live until July 12th and there are plenty of PC deals to be found. Here, we take a look at the best gaming monitor deals, with 240Hz monitors dropping to just £200.

There are many discounted monitors available on Amazon for Prime Day, ranging from high-end ultrawide and 4K displays to more cost-effective 1440p and 1080p monitors. These are all gaming displays, which for us, means anything offering at least 120Hz. In most cases, the monitors we've picked out offer much more than that.

We'll start off at the high-end of the market. The Corsair Xeneon Flex is an interesting monitor, offering the ability to physically bend the monitor to switch between a flat and curved display. It offers an OLED 240Hz 45-inch panel with 3440×1440 resolution. It impressed us in our review, but its £2000 price tag did sting. Currently for Prime Day, this monitor is down to £1,399, a 33% saving.

If you would rather have a super-wide display, then the increasingly popular Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 is currently down to £1,499, offering a 49-inch 5120×1440 display with HDR and 240Hz refresh rate.

Samsung has a couple of other good options at different price points. For £999, you can get the Odyssey Neo Quantum G8 Mini LED monitor, offering 4K/240Hz and HDR in a 32-inch display. The Odyssey G7 offers 1440 at 240Hz and HDR for £449.

The MSI Optix MAG35 is down from £449 to £399, offering a 34-inch 3440×1440 ultrawide display with 144Hz refresh rate, making this one of the better ultrawide deals available for those looking to spend less than £500. The MSI MPG Artymis 27 is also worth a shoutout, offering a 27-inch 1440p/165Hz display for £299.

The Philips Gaming 32M1 is down to £225, offering a 32-inch QHD display and 165Hz refresh rate.

Finally, if you are after a cheap 1080p gaming monitor, there are plenty of options at and under the £200 mark. The Samsung Odyssey G4 is down from £299 to £209. You'll have to settle for 1080p at 27 inches. As the display is larger than a typical 24-inch 1080p display, you get less pixels per inch, so it is a trade-off to be aware of.

If you prefer 1080p in a smaller package, then the AOC Gaming C24 is a great option, at just £124.99, this monitor offers a 24-inch 1080p display with a 165Hz refresh rate, making it an ideal and cheap entry point into high refresh rate gaming.

This is just a selection of some of the deals that stood out to us but there are plenty of other deals to be found. If you are looking for a new monitor, you can find all of the deals HERE.

Back in 2015, Samsung chose to stop making OLED TVs, instead opting to work on alternative technologies, like QLED. However, OLED has only grown in popularity amongst consumers, giving LG a nice advantage in the display market. Now, Samsung has reportedly signed a deal to start buying OLED panels from LG.

In a recent report, Reuters claims that Samsung has signed a deal to buy LG TV panels. These will be high-end panels to start off with, so don't expect Samsung to roll out a full lineup of OLED TVs, but the company should soon offer a few high-end options using LG panels.

This is the first time Samsung has purchased OLED panels from LG, its closest rival. Samsung reportedly bought as many as two million OLED panels for future TVs in 2024. In 2025, that number will jump to three million OLED panels and then in 2026, it will jump up again to five million.

As pointed out by The Verge, Samsung has been looking to get back into the OLED TV market for a little while now and is also working on spinning up its own supply. Currently, Samsung supplies OLED panels for Sony's 2022 QD-OLED TV. At this point in time though, Samsung Display is pretty far behind, with LG taking up 50 percent of the OLED TV market, and Sony coming in behind it with a 26 percent share. Samsung's OLED TV market share is currently in the single digits.

KitGuru Says: Samsung has made plenty of nice TVs over the years but ultimately, the quality of OLED has won out over LCD solutions and issues like burn-in are far less pervasive nowadays. In the years ahead, it looks like we'll start to see more Samsung OLED TVs once again.

Samsung has released its first flat mini-LED gaming monitor, the Odyssey Neo G7 (Model name: G70NC). Previous Samsung Mini-LED monitors have been curved, but now there is finally an option for those who prefer flat displays.

The new Samsung Odyssey Neo G7 monitor packs a 43-inch Quantum Mini-LED VA panel with 144hz refresh rate, 1ms MPRT, and 4K resolution. Typical brightness sits at 400nits, but the VESA Display HDR600 certification suggests it should peak at 600nits. With a 10-bit colour depth and a 4250:1 contrast ratio, the monitor can cover 95% of the DCI-P3 colour gamut.

Like most modern monitors, it features flicker-free technology, eye-saver mode, and multiple colour presets. It also supports FreeSync Premium Pro for tear-free gaming, and Smart TV apps and Samsung Gaming Hub (via Tizen) to install and use your favourite apps without needing a PC. Additionally, it features Ultrawide Game View, which allows you to adjust the size of the screen between 20 and 43 inches with an aspect ratio ranging from 16:9 to 21:9. Lastly, there's Game Bar, Samsung's OSD that includes overlay features such as virtual aim point and FPS counter.

The monitor comes calibrated out-of-the-box and features two 20W speakers. For connectivity, there's a DisplayPort 1.4, two HDMI 2.1 ports, two USB-A 3.0 interfaces, a 3.5mm headphone jack, an Ethernet port, and support for Bluetooth 5.2 and Wi-Fi 5 (including Wireless Display). The included stand is limited to tilting, but you can replace it with a monitor arm compatible with the VESA 200×200 standard. The Odyssey Neo G7 will be available worldwide starting Q1 2023, with launch dates differing by location.

Samsung kicked off its CES announcements this week with the introduction of four new ground-breaking monitors, including the new Odyssey Neo G9, packing a massive 57-inch curved Dual UHD Mini LED panel with a 240Hz refresh rate and HDR.

Starting with the Odyssey Neo G9, this monitor packs a curved (1000R) 57-inch mini LED screen with a 240Hz refresh rate, 7,680×2,160 resolution and a 32:9 aspect ratio. As a VESA Display HDR 1000-certified display, this monitor has to have at least 1000 nits of peak brightness. Besides being the world's first dual UHD gaming monitor, it's also the first to pack a DisplayPort 2.1 interface.

Moving on to the Odyssey OLED G9, this 49-inch monitor packs a 1800R curved OLED with quantum dot tech, 240Hz refresh rate, a 0.1ms response time and a 7,680×2,160 resolution (32:9). As most OLED panels, the exceptionally high contrast ratio (1M:1) means you get deeper blacks. Note that this is a smart monitor, meaning you get apps such as Prime Video, Netflix and YouTube through Smart Hub, as well as Nvidia GeForce Now and Xbox Cloud Gaming via Gaming Hub.

The third monitor is the ViewFinity S9, a 5K display with a 27-inch screen and a built-in Color Calibration engine that allows users to calibrate the monitors on their smartphones via the Samsung Smart Calibration app. Aimed at creators, this monitor covers 99% of the DCI-P3 colour gamut. Moreover, it comes calibrated out-of-the-box with a delta E ≦2 and features Matte Display to limit light reflection and glare. To meet creators' needs, it comes with a suite of other features, including USB-C and Thunderbolt 4 interfaces, a 4K SlimFit camera and Smart Hub support.

The last one is the new Smart Monitor M8, which will now have a 27-inch option in addition to the existing 32-inch size. Regardless of the size, the panel has a 4K resolution. Available in pink, white, green and blue, Samsung's new M8 monitor comes with a height-adjustable stand with tilting and pivoting capabilities.

Regarding its smart capabilities, it features a built-in SmartThings Hub controller that allows you to manage compatible connected devices, including lights, cameras, doorbells, locks, thermostats and more. This number will grow even further once Samsung adds support for Matter and Home Connectivity Alliance standards, which should come later this year. Another highlight of this monitor is the new My Contents feature, which allows the monitor to detect a smartphone in its vicinity via BT while in standby mode. If the smartphone is registered, it will display the photos, schedule and other things stored in it. Once the smartphone is out of reach, the monitor returns to standby mode. Other smart functionalities include mouse control on over-the-top apps, Smart Hub, Gaming Hub, and an integrated SlimFit camera.

Cast your mind back the best part of two years and you may recall that I reviewed the PCSpecialist Vidar with Ryzen 9 5900X and RX 6800 XT graphics. Today the time has come for an update to a Zen 4 CPU and we also got to play with Samsung's latest 990 Pro SSD. Sadly the price has crept up from £2,200 to £2,849 which is quite clearly a sign of the time.

It is fairly obvious that a pre-built PC is the sum of its parts and then we take account of the build quality and price. In the case of the PCSpecialist Zircon Master R this is doubly true as we have reviewed most of the components in recent times. Luke is working on the Ryzen 9 7900X right now but has reviewed the 8- and 16- core models HERE and the Ryzen 5 7600X HERE. Luke also reviewed Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB DDR5-5200 HERE and the Corsair H150i Elite CPU cooler HERE. Simon has reviewed both the Samsung 980 Pro SSD HERE and the 990 Pro HERE and I have reviewed the Corsair iCUE 5000T RGB HERE. The final piece of the puzzle is the graphics card which has an identical specification to the reference RX 6800 XT that Dominic reviewed HERE.

PCSpecialist has done a tidy job with the build and has configured Corsair's iCUE software to provide a Rainbow Marquee light show along with cooling air flow that keeps the Ryzen 9 7900X under control.

Samsung keeps pushing the limits of LPDDR5X memory. Recently, the company announced their LPDDR5X chips, capable of achieving 8.5Gbps speeds, 1Gbps more than Samsung's previous maximum announced in March 2022.

LPDDR memory is the most common type of memory used on mobile devices. However, it's starting to be used in other fields due to its combination of high performance and low power consumption. Some industries where we're seeing this include PCs, high-performance computing (HPC), servers and automobiles. In the future, Samsung believes LPDDR memory will also be used in other industries, namely artificial intelligence (AI) and the metaverse.

Samsung has been at the forefront of this technology for some years, and the new LPDDR5X-8500 memory is proof of that. Compared to the previously fastest LPDDR5X memory from Samsung, the new one is 1Gbps faster.

The new memory has already been validated for use on Snapdragon mobile platforms, meaning it shouldn't take long before phone and tablet manufacturers start using it on their devices. With that in mind, expect to see the first devices using LPDDR5X-8500 in late 2022/early 2023.

KitGuru says: As the use of LPDDR memory increases across different types of devices, we have been left wondering if they will ever become the standard for desktop systems. Do you think that will ever happen?

The post Samsung 990 Pro 2TB Review first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
Samsung's latest flagship SSD for the consumer space is the 990 Pro, taking over from the previous high-end drive, the SSD 980 Pro. The new Gen 4 drive uses the latest in-house Pascal controller and Samsung's 7th generation V-NAND. Today we review the 2TB model, with an MSRP of £283.99.

At launch the 990 Pro comes in just two capacities; 1TB and 2TB and two versions, a plain drive or a heatsink-equipped model. A 4TB non-heatsink flagship model will be along sometime in 2023. The standard drive has a copper heat spreader built into the label on the back of the drive to help dissipate heat. The heatsink version of the drive gives more thermal control.

The drive uses a combination of Samsung's latest Pascal controller and the company's 176-layer 3-bit MLC (TLC) V-NAND. Sequential performance for the two capacities is quoted as up to 7,450MB/s for reads and up to 6,900MB/s for writes.

Samsung supplies two sets of 4K random read/write figures for the drive at Queue Depths 1 (1 thread) and 32 (16 threads). At QD1  the 2TB drive is rated up to 22.000 IOPS for reads and up to 80,000 IOPS for writes. At QD32 these figures rise to 1,550,000 IOPS for reads and up to 1,400,000 IOPS for writes. The 1TB drive has the same figures with the exception of the 4K write performance at QD32 where it is rated at 1,200,000 IOPS.

Power wise the 2TB drive is rated at 8.5W maximum and 5.5W average for active use. 55mW for idle and 5mw in sleep mode.

Samsung quotes endurance figures of 600TBW for the 1TB drive and 1,200TBW for the 2TB model and back the range with a 5-year warranty.

Physical Specifications:

  • Usable Capacities: 2TB.
  • NAND Components: Samsung 176-layer V-NAND.
  • NAND Controller: Samsung Pascal.
  • Cache: 2GB LPDDR4
  • Interface: PCIe Gen 4.0 x4, NVMe 2.0.
  • Form Factor: M.2, 2280.
  • Dimensions: 80 x 22 x 2.3mm.

A week ago, a PCI-SIG listing showed that Samsung is working on a new 990 Pro PCIe 5.0 SSD. As it turns out, the Samsung 990 Pro is actually a PCIe 4.0 SSD, but the new combination of V-NAND and Samsung's new controller tech enable the company to get as much speed out of the drive as possible.

Today at Gamescom, Samsung officially announced the 990 Pro M.2 SSD, featuring the company's latest V-NAND and a new proprietary controller. Together, this allows the SSD to reach sequential read/write speeds of up to  7,450 MB/s and 6,900 MB/s, respectively.

Random read and write speeds come in at up to 1,400K and 1,550K IOPS, respectively – a 55% improvement over the 980 Pro SSD, making the new 990 Pro particularly well suited for gaming and creative/productivity tasks. In games, Samsung tested the SSD with upcoming JRPG, Forspoken, allowing the game to be loaded in one second, versus 28 seconds on a HDD.

Here is a gallery of photos taken from Samsung's launch presentation at Gamescom:

KitGuru Says: The last few years have seen huge gains for M.2 SSD speeds. The 990 Pro looks to carve out a spot as one of the fastest PCIe 4.0 SSDs on the market. Later down the line, it'll be interesting to see what Samsung can deliver with PCIe 5.0, which is slowly taking over as the new standard.

There has been a huge rise in the number of large gaming displays in recent years and Samsung may have just revealed the most impressive one yet. The new Odyssey Ark is a massive, 55-inch gaming display with Quantum HDR 2000, a 165Hz refresh rate and a very capable stand, allowing for much greater ergonomic adjustment than we typically see for monitors of this size.

Packing a 55-inch VA panel with 1,056 dimming zones and 1000R curvature, the Odyssey Ark isn't your average monitor. It features a 165Hz refresh rate, 4K resolution, 1ms response time, and FreeSync Premium Pro, offering a fully-featured gaming experience. The panel has a contrast ratio of 1M:1, 1000 nits of typical brightness, 14-bit backlight and supports Quantum HDR 2000.

To complement the high-grade display, there's a 60W sound system with four speakers and two woofers, and a Neural Quantum Processor Ultra using AI to adjust image detail and colour. Moreover, it comes with an ergonomic stand that lets you tilt, adjust the height, and pivot the monitor, allowing you to put it in Cockpit mode.

Other interesting features of the Odyssey Ark include Multi View to divide the screen into up to four smaller screens and a gaming hub to access streaming platforms like Xbox Game Pass. In addition, there's Flex Move Screen to adjust the aspect ratio and screen size, a Game Bar to view the status of configurable settings and a remote control.

The new Samsung Odyssey Ark is now available to pre-order for $3,499.99.

KitGuru says: The Odyssey Ark carries a high price tag but it also offers a lot of features that you don't see in cheaper 40-inch+ monitors. This may have set a new bar for what a large-format gaming display should be, but of course, we need to see reviews first.

With more platforms supporting PCIe 5.0 coming later this year, SSD manufacturers have been developing new storage solutions to take full advantage of the new standard. Some manufacturers have already announced they're working on PCIe 5.0 SSDs, but Samsung has been quiet so far. However, a list published by PCI-SIG suggests the company is working on a 990 Pro PCIe 5.0 SSD.

Samsung SSDs are pretty popular amongst PC builders, often considered the best by many, especially the Pro variants. Based on their success, it's only reasonable to expect Samsung to launch new SSDs supporting the PCIe 5.0 standard. For now, we still don't know much about any of them, but PCI-SIG has recently confirmed that a 990 Pro is in the works.

The table listing the SSD shows it uses an M.2 interface but doesn't specify the form factor. However, we can assume it will keep using the standard 2280 size. The other Samsung PCIe 5.0 SSDs listed in the table include the now available PM1743 U.2 SSD and the yet unreleased PM1743 U.3 and PM1743 E3.S SSDs.

At the moment, Intel already has some motherboards supporting the standard. AMD will launch its first PCIe 5.0-supported motherboards later this year alongside the new Ryzen 7000 series desktop processors.

The post Samsung 980 Pro with Heatsink 1TB Review first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
We reviewed the vanilla version of Samsung's 980 Pro back in 2020. The original version of the drive didn't have a heatsink fitted, but recently Samsung has released a heatsink-equipped version of the same SSD. We put it to the test, comparing it to a wide range of other M.2 SSDs, and also test thermal performance versus the non-heatsink model.

As with the original SSD 980 Pro, the drive uses a combination of a Samsung Elpis controller and Samsung 6th generation 1xx layer TLC V-NAND.

There are just two capacities currently available; 1TB and 2TB. Official Sequential performance ratings for the heatsink version of the 980 Pro are the same as the standard version; up to 7,000MB/s reads for both, with writes at up to 5,000MB/s (1TB) and up to 5,100MB/s for the 2TB model. Random 4K performance is listed on the spec sheet as up to 1,000,000 IOPS for both reads and writes for both capacities.

The quoted TBW endurance figures for the heatsink versions of the drive are 600TB for the 1TB model and 1,200TBW for the 2TB model. Samsung backs the drive with a 5-year warranty.

Physical Specifications:

  • Usable Capacities: 1TB.
  • NAND Components: Samsung 1** layer 3bit MLC V-NAND.
  • NAND Controller: Samsung Elpis.
  • Cache: 1GB LPDDR4.
  • Interface: PCIe Gen 4.0 x4, NVMe 1.3c.
  • Form Factor: M.2 2280.
  • Dimensions: 80 x 24 x 8.6mm.
  • Weight 30.5g.
  • Firmware Version: 3B2QGXA7.

Amazon Prime Day has officially arrived and there are tons of deals to be had. Not only can Prime members claim over 30 games for free this week, but there are also loads of discounts on PC gaming gear, making now a perfect time to pick up an upgrade. After doing some digging, it looks like now is an especially good time to pick up a new gaming monitor.

At the entry-level, there are Prime Day deals on a bunch of high refresh rate 1080p monitors, starting at just £129.99 for the LG UltraGear Gaming 24GN53A-B, knocking almost 30% off its usual price. The MSI Optix G27X6 is also a good option here, coming in at £147.25 but offering a larger display, 165Hz refresh rate and 1500R curvature.

AOC and ASUS also have worthy considerations in this price bracket, including the AOC Gaming 24G2U at £153.99 and the ASUS TUF Gaming VG258QM, offering a 280Hz refresh rate and DisplayHDR 400 at just £175. If you are after something with a bit more resolution, then there are plenty of options on that front too. The Samsung Odyssey G5 is currently down to £229, offering 1440p resolution at 144Hz, 1ms response time, FreeSync Premium and HDR10.

At £399, you can make the jump to an AOC Gaming U28G2XU, offering 4K resolution at 144Hz, 1ms response time, DisplayHDR 400 and FreeSync Premium Pro. At this price point, the AOC Gaming monitor is absolutely worth the price, coming in significantly lower than the £590 launch price from our review.

The Samsung Odyssey AG700 also offers 4K/144Hz gaming and HDMI 2.1, which will support 120Hz with next-gen consoles, but it is more expensive, coming in at £480.

Perhaps the best monitor deal of the day comes from ASUS. If you want the fastest monitor money can buy, then you'll want to look at the ROG Swift PG259QNR, an esports focused monitor with a blazing fast 360Hz refresh rate. Typically, this monitor costs upwards of £800, but for Prime Day, it has dropped to £499.

After introducing the new ViewFinity S8 monitors at CES 2022, Samsung has finally released them, bringing the world's first UL-verified Glare-Free monitors to the market. Samsung's new S80PB monitors are aimed at creative professionals, consisting of 27- and 32-inch models.

The new ViewFinity S8 monitors come with IPS panels with 4K resolution, 5ms response time and 60Hz refresh rate. Moreover, they both have the same 1000:1 contrast ratio, 10-bit colour depth, and 98% DCI-P3 colour gamut coverage. Besides the size, the maximum brightness is the most noticeable difference between the two models. While the 27-inch model caps at 400 nits, enough to certify it with DisplayHDR 400, the 32-inch one has a maximum brightness of 600 nits, fulfilling the requirements to receive the DisplayHDR 600 certification.

Both new S8 models are Pantone validated, meaning they can reproduce over 2,000 colours and the new 110 skin tone shades added to the Pantone SkinTone Guide. Additionally, they feature the new Matte Display technology that reduces light reflection that helps the monitor reproduce colours consistently, regardless of the light conditions and the angle at which the user is looking at the display. This technology helped them become the world's first UL-verified Glare-Free monitors.

The two ViewFinity S8 monitors share other features, including an eye-saver mode (low blue light), flicker-free tech, PiP, PbP, Adaptive Picture, and a HAS (Height Adjustment Stand) with pivoting, tilting and swivelling capabilities. They also have the same connectivity options: a DP interface, an HDMI port, an RJ-45 port, a USB-C port with 90W power delivery and a USB hub with three USB-A ports.

These monitors will become available soon. Samsung has yet to share pricing in this region, but we already know the 32-inch model costs 820,000 won in Korea (£518), while the 27-inch model is 720,000 won (£455).

Microsoft has been talking about bringing Xbox Cloud Gaming to TVs for quite some time, and this year, the company will finally begin the rollout. To start off with, Microsoft is partnering with Samsung to allow Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers to stream games directly to Samsung's 2022 Smart TVs and future TVs. However, more excitingly, Microsoft has also confirmed plans to allow Xbox users to stream the digital games they already own over the cloud too, even if they aren't included in Xbox Game Pass.

The Xbox TV app will launch for Samsung's 2022 Smart TVs at the end of this month through the Samsung Gaming Hub, starting on the 30th of June. The app will support streaming in 27 countries, all you'll need to do is log in with your Microsoft account and if you are an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscriber, you'll have instant access to over 100 games to stream, including major first-party games and back catalogue hits from Bethesda.

As reported by The Verge, Microsoft and Samsung will support a large number of controllers for the Xbox app. This list naturally includes all modern Xbox controllers with Bluetooth, but it also includes Sony's DualSense controller and others. In theory, most Bluetooth gamepads should work.

The only real downside is that despite Xbox Cloud Gaming being powered by Xbox Series X hardware, capable of running games at 4K, Microsoft is keeping streaming resolution limited to 1080p and up to 60 frames per second. This is likely to keep network requirements down and to ensure stable streams for the millions of Game Pass subscribers that could log in at any one time.

Aside from the TV streaming app, Xbox also confirmed plans to allow Game Pass Ultimate subscribers to access their owned digital games through xCloud. The feature will go into testing soon for Xbox Insiders with a handful of supported titles, before a wider rollout in the months to come.

We can expect more major Xbox Game Pass announcements later this week, as part of the Xbox and Bethesda showcase, which goes live at 6PM BST on Sunday, 12th of June.

KitGuru Says: Unfortunately, the new Xbox streaming app will be limited to those who purchased a brand-new Samsung TV within the last few months, which is a pretty small sample size to start off with. Hopefully the app will make its way to more TVs, including Smart TVs produced prior to 2022, later down the line.

Besides TSMC and its own foundries, Intel may have a new production source for its chips. A new report claiming the blue team is in conversation with Samsung has emerged, as the CEOs of the two companies met this past Monday.

According to The Korea Herald, Gelsinger went to Seoul, Korea, after attending the 2022 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. There, Intel's CEO and Lee Jae-Yong, vice chairman of Samsung Electronics, had the opportunity to talk about unconfirmed subjects, leading some to believe that it could be related to Intel using Samsung's foundries for producing chips.

In this meeting, there were reportedly many other Samsung executives, including Kyung Kye-Hyun, Samsung's co-CEO responsible for the chip business, Roh Tae-moon, chief of Samsung's mobile division, and other high-ranking managers from various departments within the company.

At the moment, Intel is manufacturing in its foundries and outsourcing some production to TSMC. However, adding a name such as Samsung to the list of suppliers would be an excellent way to improve production. After all, the Korean company is the second biggest foundry worldwide, only behind TSMC.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru says: With Samsung foundries, can Intel recover the chip supremacy it once had? Will other IDMs follow Intel's footsteps and start expanding their line-up of suppliers?

The latest addition to Samsung's T7 external SSD family is the T7 Shield. It joins the standard T7 and the T7 Touch which has built-in fingerprint recognition, which we reviewed back in 2020. The new T7 Shield has extra protection thanks to a rubber covering on top of the aluminium body. Priced at just over £200 for the 2TB model, we find out if it is worth the cash.

At launch, the T7 Shield comes in just two capacities, 1TB and the 2TB model we are reviewing here. Unlike the standard T7 and T7 Touch there is no 500GB entry model. Both the 1TB and 2TB models have the same official Sequential transfer rates of up to 1,050MB/s for reads and up to 1,000MB/s for writes.

The drive uses a USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps) Type C interface and comes with hardware-accelerated AES-256 encryption. The rubber covering allows the drive to achieve an IP65 rating for water and dust resistance.

Physical Specifications:

  • Usable Capacities: 2TB.
  • NAND Components: Samsung TLC V-NAND.
  • Interface: USB 3.2 Gen2 (10Gbps).
  • Form Factor: External.
  • NAND Controller: Samsung.
  • Dimensions: 89 x 59 x13mm.
  • Drive Weight: 98g.

Firmware Version: FXI7P2Q.

There was concern over Intel's Arc Mobile GPU launch this week, as few OEMs have begun announcing new laptops with Arc graphics equipped. The first Intel Arc laptops are on the way though, with the first units from Samsung arriving in South Korea, with other OEMs expected to launch new laptops ‘in the coming weeks'.

According to VideoCardz, the only laptop currently available in South Korea with an Intel Arc mobile GPU is the Samsung Galaxy Book2 Pro (Korean page). For now, it looks like there's only one model that features the GPU, and that's the NT950XEE-XD72S, which also packs a Core i7-1260P and a 1080p AMOLED display. The Intel Arc Alchemist GPU it sports is the A350M.

Currently, Samsung is running a promotion on this laptop, reducing its price from £1,954 to £1,635 (converted price). At this price, it rivals the Dell XPS line and higher-tier Asus Zenbooks. Considering it has 32GB of LPRDDR5 memory and 1TB of SSD storage, it could be a suitable alternative to these two, but the 1080p resolution might be a turnoff for some.

Besides Samsung, other OEMs should start releasing more laptops with Arc GPUs worldwide in the coming weeks.

KitGuru says: The rollout is slower than anticipated but the first Arc-equipped laptops are on the way. Hopefully we can start to put them head to head against the competition soon.

Samsung is looking to usher in a new age of PC monitors, adopting the ‘smart' features we've become accustomed to seeing on modern TVs. The Samsung M8 Smart Monitor packs a 32-inch 4K panel, as well as a built-in webcam and microphone.

Samsung's first attempt at the Smart Monitor arrived a couple of years ago with the M7. Now, with the new M8, Samsung is kicking things up a notch with better specs. Featuring a 32-inch VA panel with 4K resolution, 4ms G2G response time and 60Hz refresh rate, the latest Samsung monitor aims to deliver everything a mainstream user would want.

As a smart monitor, users can watch Netflix, Amazon Prime and many other streaming services without needing to use or connect a PC to the display. Alternatively, you can also pair it with your phone via Samsung DeX/Apple AirPlay 2 or mirror the screen to the monitor. You can even directly access Microsoft 365 or video chat apps like Google Duo.

The Samsung M8 also features a SmartThings Hub that you may use to control the IoT devices connected to the smart monitor. Moreover, you can use voice assistants such as Bixby and Amazon Alexa through the monitor.

With 400nits of typical brightness and a 3000:1 contrast ratio, the M8 10-bit panel can cover 99% of the sRGB gamut. In addition, HDR content is supported (HDR10+) by the M8. Like most monitors today, it features an Eye Saver mode and flicker-free tech to reduce the user's eye strain.

The included stand allows users to tilt, swivel, and adjust the height as they wish. Physical interfaces include a micro HDMI port and 2x USB-C ports (one upstream and one downstream) with 65W power delivery, but WiFi 5 and BT 4.2 wireless connectivity are also present. Additionally, there are 2x 5W built-in speakers (with tweeters) and a built-in Far Field Voice microphone. Lastly, the package includes an FHD webcam (SlimFit Cam) with Face Tracking and Auto Zoom and remote control to conveniently move through the monitor's UI.

The Samsung M8 is now available to pre-order in white, green, blue and pink. The first option will cost $699.99, while the other colour variants will cost $729.99.

KitGuru says: We should start seeing more smart monitors soon, but considering the current alternatives, the M8 looks like a compelling option in this new market. As a display, it may not fulfil everyone's needs, but the feature set it packs targets a broad mainstream audience.

Earlier this week, Microsoft published a lengthy post detailing the group ‘LAPSUS$' and how it operates following a string of cyberattacks on companies like Nvidia, Samsung and even Microsoft itself. Now, just days later, seven members of the group have been identified and arrested.

The group had stolen and leaked files from several major companies and was ramping up its attacks in recent months. After the attack on Microsoft, the company's own security experts began investigating, finding that the group's first attacks took place in the UK and South America. Microsoft also added that the group does not cover its tracks well, indicating that they would not be too difficult to track down if authorities began looking.

Sure enough, a group of teenagers in the UK have now been arrested in connection to the group. Seven arrests have been made so far, with one member holding a big stash of cryptocurrency too, worth roughly £10 million. Members of the group were aged between 16 and 21.

The group would primarily use social engineering tactics to gain access to accounts and then use those accounts to steal data from corporations and attempt to extort them for money. Given the haul of 300 Bitcoin found, it would seem that some did pay up along the way.

KitGuru Says: After Microsoft's lengthy report this week, this seemed like an inevitable outcome. No charges have been filed yet, but the police are continuing to investigate.
