Today we are looking at the SanDisk Ultra Plus 256GB Solid State drive which features a Marvell SS889175 processor and SanDisk 19nm memory. Prices of this drive have dropped in recent weeks to around £130 inc vat. Is this an ideal large capacity drive to be shortlisting for a new system build?

Sandisk have targeted the SSD market hard in the last year and their Extreme drive was close to the top of the charts, featuring the SandForce SF-2281. Due to reliability issues last year with the 2281 controller many enthusiast users have been looking at other options, such as the Indilinx Barefoot 3 controller featured in the OCZ Vector SSD. How does the Marvell SS889175 cope with our extensive stress testing?

While we can't be completely certain that OCZ has any 6′ 4″ assassins working in the sales team, Sandisk's price move on older SSD products with Dabs last week (reported on KitGuru) seems to have been followed by a strong price move on the latest OCZ Agility drives from eBuyer.

It's entirely possible that the ‘Sandisk, then OCZ' price moves were coincidental, but it makes for a much cooler story if it was a deliberate counter-strike, so we'll go with the conspiracy theory.

Paraphrasing Jules from the infamous scene in Tarantino's 1994 blockbuster, is it possible that when our story ran, someone at OCZ was heard to utter the phrase, “The path of the righteous enthusiast is beset on all sides by the iniquities of older controllers and the flushing of out-dated SSD technology. Blessed is eBuyer, who in the name of charity and goodwill, shepherds the overclocker through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his bro's keeper and the finder of lost MHz. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is OCZ when I lay my Agility price cuts upon thee”?

Unlikely, but still enough to make us smile.

Having spoken with a guru at OCZ, it was pointed out to us that the SanDisk product is an entire generation back down the evolutionary trail from the OCZ Agility.

Simply put, while the newly priced SanDisk drive sits pretty at just under £70, it can barely muster 50% of the performance of the 120GB OCZ Agility drive that eBuyer is now pushing out.

Here's the OCZ move on eBuyer and the initial SanDisk story from KitGuru.

eBuyer claims to have dropped the price of the OCZ Agility drive by 50%. Nice. Not necessarily 100% accurate, but nice.

KitGuru says: The SSD market is a land grab, pure and simple. When PCs began to increase in popularity during the early 90s, there were a number of hard drive options from companies like Quantum and IBM. Now the world of the spinning disk has come down, pretty much, to Seagate and Western Digital. If the same happens with SSD, who will be the last 2 standing by 2022?

Sandisk are updating their range of solid state drives with new models offering higher levels of performance. The new drives have a SATA III Interface and can will almost double the performance of the previous P4 range.

Solid State drives are slowly gaining momentum with the enthusiast audience appreciating the performance gains they can deliver, especially when configured as a boot drive for an operating system. They also use less power which makes them beneficial within a laptop environment.

The U100 solid state drives are targeted at the ultra thin laptop sector and will range in size from a tiny 8GB to a whopping 256GB. The U100 claims a performance level of 450MB/s read and can write data at 340MB/s.

Their new iSSD drives are aimed at the tablet PC sector and can hold between 8GB and 128GB. They are created in a BGA type package with connection points available directly to the PC circuit board. Maximum speeds are 450MB/s read and 160MB/s write. These new drives are aimed at the performance sector and should help Sandisk claim a larger percentage of the market over the coming year.

Acer and Asus used the previous P4 drives in their Iconia and EEE Slate computers.
