The first generation Raspberry Pi single board computers (SBC) were released back in February 2012, and featured just 512 MB RAM. Since then, SBCs have come a long way and now the Raspberry Pi 4 has been made available with 8GB of memory.

8GB is a lot of RAM for such a tiny computer – matching some smartphones and even laptops. To make use of this increased memory capacity, the Raspberry Pi Foundation has released an early beta 64-bit version of their operating system, since 64-bit is required to utilise this much memory. Other than the memory update, the SBC's specifications are identical to the other Raspberry Pi 4 boards with less RAM.

In its blog post  discussing the release of the 8 GB model, the Raspberry Pi Foundation said that “the BCM2711 chip that we use on Raspberry Pi 4 can address up to 16GB of LPDDR4 SDRAM”. It might be difficult to imagine, but according to the blog post it's theoretically possible that a Raspberry Pi 4 with 16 GB will be released in the future.

The Raspberry Pi 4 equipped with 8GB RAM can be found with a price tag of about £70 at UK retailers.

HardKernel has released new version of its ODROID single board computers – the ODRIOD-C4. This computer is sold for $50 and with its 2 GHz CPU and 4 GB RAM it's a serious contender to the popular Raspberry Pi 4.

The main CPU of the ODROID-C4 is built with a quad-core Cortex-A55 cluster with a new generation Mali-G31 GPU. HardKernel compares the ODRIOD-C4 to its predecessor ODRIOD-C2, saying that “the CPU multi-core performance is around 40% faster, and the system DRAM performance is 50% faster than the ODROID-C2”. However, it should be noted that the ODRIOD-C2 was released back in 2016.

ODRIOD-C4 is capable of running Ubuntu 20.04 minimal as well as playing 4K videos using its HDMI 2.0 port. The board measures 85mm x 56mm x 1.0mm and weighs in at 59g when including the heatsink. The compact computer from HardKernel also comes equipped with an eMMC connector as well as a Micro SD slot. Lastly, the ODRIOD-C4 also ships with a 1 GbE LAN port and four USB 3.0 ports.

ODRIOD-C4 is available to order HERE.

NymphCast is an open source project hosted at GitHub that allows your Raspberry Pi to be used as a streaming device. Maya Posch – the developer behind the free software – explains that NymphCast lets your “Linux-capable hardware” to be used as an audio and video source.

NymphCast, however, is not limited to Raspberry Pi – it can be installed on “similar” single board computers (SBC). At the moment it's not entirely clear what qualifies as a “similar” SBC, but it doesn't seem unreasonable that Orange Pi could also utilise the software. Maya Posch chooses to describe NymphCast as an “audio and video casting system with support for custom applications.”, whereas Tom's Hardware compares NymphCast with Chromecast.

The NymphCast device can be controlled through a local network with either the NymphCast Player application (available for Mac and PC), or through the NymphCast Player app (available for Android). In short, NymphCast makes it possible to connect an SBC to an output device and control the playback from a phone or computer through the local network.

The software is still in an early stage of development so bugs and stability issues can be expected. Eventual issues found when using NymphCast can be reported HERE.
