Kingston has announced a refresh of its Canvas series SD and microSD cards along with new MobileLite Plus card readers today. The new Canvas Plus SD series includes Kingston’s first UHS-II card while MobileLite Plus UHS-II readers have been engineered to support these new high-speed cards.

The new Canvas Plus SD card series from Kingston includes several variations of both SD and microSD cards including Select Plus, Go! Plus and React Plus. The Canvas Select Plus series was launched at the end of 2019 and has now been joined by the Go! As well as supporting the latest 4K/8K cameras, the new series of SD cards are also backwards compatible with UHS-I and conventional SD bus standards. The new MobileLite Plus SD card readers will be made available as a bundle with React Plus SD/microSD cards or to purchase separately on their own.

Canvas Select Plus and Go! Plus are available in both SD and microSD form factor with capacities up to 512 GB available, featuring Class 10 UHS-I speeds up to 100/170 MB/s read (Select plus/Go! For years, Kingston has been the go-to brand for many, the company produce high quality and high-speed memory in form factors ranging from 2.5-inch SSDs to their HyperX branded gaming RAM. Kingston also offers high-performance microSD cards suitable for a range of mobile devices.

According to TechPowerUp, Kingston has announced it will be revamping its Canvas Select Plus line of SD and MicroSD storage, by replacing its current line of Canvas Select plus with new higher speeds and higher capacity models. According to Kingston, this makes them essential for smartphones and digital cameras.

Canvas Select Plus secure digital storage is designed to maximise user experience with lightning-fast data transfer rates and more reliable higher capacities. The new range of Canvas Select plus features both 256 GB and 512 GB capacities that move high-quality content faster, with its Class 10 UHS-I speeds of up to 100 MB/s, which is ideal for heavy workloads such as editing HD video content.

Kingston says the new Canvas Select plus microSD card is optimised for use with Android devices. Its A1 app performance class design is perfect for launching and loading apps at ultra-fast speeds. Enhanced A1 specification provides users with ample speed and storage for high-resolution photos and 4K video capture, along with graphics-intensive multimedia.

Kingston Canvas Select plus SD storage is backed by a lifetime warranty from Kingston who are well known for providing free technical support for their products.

KitGuru says: Kingston already offer a great range of SD storage solutions with high-speed data transfer rates. The new range of Canvas Select Plus should offer great performance at a competitive price if their previous models in the range are anything to go by.

SD cards are always fascinating. With every year that goes by they somehow manage to cram more space into the same form factor, at an affordable price too. The SD Association is taking that one step further with their new SD Ultra Capacity cards, with a storage limit of 128TB.

On the 26th of June, The SD Association announced SDUC and SD Express. SDUC will push the maximum storage capacity in SD cards from a measly 2TB up to 128TB. SD Express is based more on improving the speed of SD cards, and the SD Association has really gone all out for this new specification.  SD Express will add PCI Express and NVMe to the regular SD card interface, with the PCIe interface delivering 985 MB/s data transfer rates.

Both new standards will be added to the new SD 7.0 specification and are backwards compatible, just like every other SD Card.

The SD Association’s President spoke about they feel these new innovations mean for SD cards stating, “With SD Express we’re offering an entirely new level of memory card with faster protocols turning cards into a removable SSD,”.

KitGuru Says: Whilst SDUC is amazing, SD Express is improving on one of the biggest downsides of SD Cards, the performance, and that makes it a lot more exciting than more storage. What do you make of these new SD standards?
