No Man’s Sky is the gift that will seemingly forever keep on giving, with Hello Games announcing its latest major update. Nearly 8 years since its initial release, the latest free ‘Omega’ update brings with it an overhaul to expeditions, pirate freighters, new planetary missions and more.

While in no way the biggest update to No Man’s Sky, patch 4.5 ‘Omega’ still brings with it a notable number of changes, refinements and additions, including:

  • Free-to-play trial (until the 19th of February)
  • Expeditions overhaul
  • New Omega Expedition
  • New ‘Starborn’ Ship with unique functionality
  • Board defeated pirate capital ships to take them over
  • Revamped main mission with additional choices and enhanced visuals
  • Quality-of-life improvements
  • New unique jetpack
  • Alien lifeforms offer rewards for a huge array of new planetary missions

As always, the full patch notes are extensive and include dozens or even hundreds of small tweaks/fixes. Regardless, it continues to be impressive just how long Hello Games have supported No Man’s Sky for – all for entirely free.

That said, with the team’s next major game [Light No Fire] set to arrive some time in the future, it will be interesting to see whether No Man’s Sky’s post-launch support slows down following its release.

We will have to wait and see, but either way, No Man’s Sky might go down as the best-supported game of all time when everything is said and done.

Just days after Hello Games celebrated the 7th anniversary of No Man’s Sky, the team have once again released another massive free update to any and all who own the game. Dubbed the ‘Echoes’ update, this latest patch brings robotic aliens; PSVR 2 improvements; FSR 2 on Switch; a trench run and so much more.

Detailing this update, the team at Hello Games said “Meet a secret society of robotic aliens in update 4.4, ECHOES! Furthering the narrative introduced in INTERCEPTOR, explore the mysteries of the Autophage, perform their rituals, learn their language, and assemble your own ceremonial staff. In deep space, confront huge outlaw dreadnoughts, sweep through their trenches and destroy vulnerable components in new tactical space combat – and much more!”

The full and lengthy details surrounding the update can be found HERE, but just some of the new additions include:

  • Epic Freighter Battles
  • Customisable Staff
  • Robotic Race
  • Atlas MultiTool
  • Holo Displays
  • New Story
  • Weapon Trading
  • Voyagers Exp
  • Space Combat Depth
  • Torpedo Frigates
  • Ship Trenches
  • Twitch Campaign
  • Pirate Faction
  • PSVR2 & Switch Visuals

It is truly inspiring to see the team at Hello Games continue to add so many new features to No Man’s Sky, all the while improving upon pre-existing mechanics and functions.

No Man’s Sky is easily the best game in history when it comes to post-launch support. Hopefully other studios take note and inspiration from Hello Games.

The exploration focused open-universe game No Man’s Sky has been on quite the journey itself. Following years of hype, the indie game ultimately launched to a severe amount of disappointment from fans, with the game said to be lacking many of its promised features. 7 years on from its release and it would be hard to disagree with the sentiment that the team at Hello Games have gone above and beyond to repair and even elevate their reputation. Celebrating this milestone achievement, the team have now teased their next update.

In a short video released to YouTube, the team at Hello Games showcased the journey which No Man’s Sky has been on, including the game’s two-dozen massive-yet free-updates, saying “We can't quite believe that seven years have passed since launch. What a crazy journey!”

Unsurprisingly, Sean Murray and the team concluded the video with a tease for their next upcoming update, saying “Our journey continues with ECHOES – coming soon!”

As with every single other post-launch aspect of No Man’s Sky, ECHOES will be a free update to any and all who own the game. With more than 20 massive patches/updates released over the past 7 years, it is more than valid to say that No Man’ Sky is so much more than the game it was originally promised to be – and all those who previously berated the studio for the state of the game at launch would gladly say that Hello Games have redeemed themselves.

It will be interesting to see what the next 7 years of both No Man’s Sky and Hello Games holds.

Since its controversial launch all the way back in 2016, No Man’s Sky has become one of the prime examples of how a game can turn itself right around as long as the studio behind it is committed to improving and making a good game. Later this week, No Man’s Sky is set to get its 4.0 update, with the studio now detailing some of the additions.

Ahead of its launch on the 7th of October (also coinciding with the Switch release of No Man’s Sky), Hello Games’ Sean Murray sat down with PC Gamer to discuss the upcoming update, saying “If you come back to the game [in 4.0] there's actually a log where you have a summary of the story so far. We have an info portal that will collect together everything that you've done so far, everything you've unlocked, all of that, and give you more info on it, so that you can dig into it.”

Other improvements coming with the update includes new milestones to hit; a streamlined yet also expanded inventory; a ‘relaxed’ game mode which will “give players the sandbox experience of No Man's Sky but with less of a focus on survival” as well as upping the challenge on the survival mode.

With all that said it seems one of the major focus points with the 4.0 update is to give players the freedom to adapt the experience however they wish, with Murray claiming that “If you want to dial [the challenge] slightly differently, if you want to have permadeath in relaxed game mode, or whatever it is, you can do those things. You can change a ton of things to do with controls, a ton of things to do with difficulty, survival, crafting, you know, you can balance those your own way.”

These are likely to be just a few of the dozens or even hundreds of changes and improvements coming with the 4.0 update on the 7th of October. As always, the update will be 100% free to any and all those who own a copy of No Man’s Sky.

KitGuru says: What do you think of the 4.0 update details so far? What else do you want to see added? Would you pay for No Man’s Sky DLC? Let us know down below.

Earlier today we reported that No Man’s Sky had received a new major update adding all manner of additions, changes and fixes. This is the game’s 19th major update, and yet the team appears to be nowhere near done.

Hello Games has shown No Man’s Sky the level of support that can only be compared to few developers in the industry. With the game’s 19th major free update now available, Hello Games founder Sean Murray sat down with IGN to discuss the future of No Man’s Sky, with Murray revealing that the game’s scope is only going to continue to get bigger, saying:

“As many updates as we've done since launch and as many bucket list items we've checked off, our list of things we're excited about never seems to get any shorter. The team are always coming up with new things that they want to do with the game: new content and features and areas for improvement.”

Discussing more behind the scenes aspects, Murray claimed to be “amazed that the energy levels are as high now as they've ever been. We tend not to talk about what's on that list publicly but suffice to say we're not done yet by a long shot.”

Comparing the development of No Man’s Sky to a painting, Murray said “I like to think that No Man's Sky is such a large game that we have to paint in broad brush strokes, and then each update comes along and fills in some finer detail but also paints more new broad strokes.”

Sean Murray concluded by claiming “That's certainly the case here. If you look at our patch notes [for the Sentinel Update], you'll see an absolute ton of refinements, but also huge new features too”.

No Man’s Sky has had a once in a generation turnover from fan outcry to fanfare. Fortunately for the fans, Hello Games has taken this responsibility to heart, ensuring that each subsequent update elevates the game far beyond the developers’ original promise. It is nice to see Hello Games enjoying their work on the game.

Ever since the disappointing release of No Man’s Sky back in 2015, Hello Games have been hard at work to turn the game into a success. They managed to do this, and then some, with the game receiving major updates more than 5 years after launch. The team is back with the next major update for No Man’s Sky, bringing settlement building; 250+ basebuilding parts; town defence and more.

Making the announcement on the PlayStation Blog, Sean Murray, the Founder of Hello Games introduced the No Man’s Sky update – the 17th major update since the game’s release back in 2015. Speaking on it, he said “On August 9, the 5th anniversary of our PlayStation launch, we teased our 17th update, Frontiers. Today, we are pleased to let players see what we’ve been working so hard on. It’s a huge update, with a focus on improving base building and introducing occupied settlements on planets.”

Offering greater details, the Frontiers Update – which is available now – comes with hundreds of changes both small and large, the greatest of which includes:

  • Planetary settlements where “Clusters of pioneering aliens have banded together to build planetary settlements. These little communities, bustling with life and promise, can now be found on all inhabited planets across the galaxies.”
  • Being able to create your own settlement and everything that comes with this, including “town planning, treasury management, policy decisions and conflict resolution. Every settlement is procedurally generated, with unique buildings, neighbourhood layouts, colour schemes, and interior and exterior decoration”
  • Hundreds of new base parts
  • New expedition season
  • Visual improvements including “Breathtaking nebulas,” weapon and explosion improvements and more
  • Base building improvements
  • Twitch campaign

These are but a few of the many many changes and additions being introduced with this latest update. While No Man’s Sky launched in a less-than-promised state, the current game as it sits today goes far beyond the initial promises made by the team at Hello Games – and all for free too. The full lsit of features can be found HERE.

When No Man’s Sky first released in 2016, the game was mired in controversies surrounding alleged broken promises made by the game's developer ‘Hello Games’. Since then, the studio has released multiple large free updates, each one adding new content, refining features, and improving the overall experience. The latest free update is called “Synthesis”, and is releasing today to all players of No Man’s Sky.

The update was announced by Sean Murray, the Managing Director and Co-Founder of Hello Games, saying: “Announcing The Synthesis Update! • Ship salvaging • First person exocraft • Multiple weapons • Ship upgrading • VR improvements • Tri base building parts • Backpack refiner • plus nearly 300 tweaks and changes for this game we love so much”.

Further details were divulged on No Man’s Sky’s website, including a new terrain editing system; protected terrain edits; the ability to save custom outfits; photomode and creature riding have both been enabled in VR; the starship space map has been overhauled; improved inventory management; new technology upgrades; among many other quality-of-life improvements.

The Synthesis Update, available today, follows the major releases of the ‘Foundation Update’, the ‘Pathfinder Update’, the ‘Atlas Rises Update’, the ‘No Man’s Sky Next’ Update, ‘The Abyss Update’, ‘Visions’ update, and the ‘Beyond’ update – all of which have added significant features, improvements, and refinements.

Many outlets chose to re-review the game after the release of the Beyond update, with the general consensus from both the critics and fans being that the game has improved since its release in 2016. It appears that Hello Games is determined to continue improving the game, until No Man’s Sky becomes as good as it possibly can be. The full list of patch notes for the Synthesis Update is available here.

Hello Games and Sean Murray have been awfully quiet since the launch of No Man's Sky, which is most likely down to the poor reception the game got from critics and buyers alike. However, earlier today the studio showed some signs of life on Twitter, with the Hello Games account posting “No Man's Sky was a mistake”. Since then, news outlets across the web have been scrambling to get the full story, with lots of conflicting information going around.

Following the tweet, two outlets, Mashable and Forbes, received emails from Hello Games claiming that the tweet came from an angry employee. In a separate report, Polygon claims to have received an email coming from Sean Murray's own address, in which the team lead takes responsibility for the tweet.

NMS TWEET

Since then though, Sean Murray has actually tweeted on the No Man's Sky Twitter account for the first time since August, stating that the Hello Games server was hacked: “Server hacked. We're binging Mr Robot Episodes as quickly as we can looking for answers. Ep05 is a cracker”.

He then followed that up with another tweet saying “if anything was a mistake, it was using Linked In without 2FA”. This seems to back up the theory that Sean Murray's email account was hacked, leading to a takeover of the company Twitter account. Either way, things seem to be up in the air at the moment, hopefully the story can be cleared up soon.

KitGuru Says: Given how everything has gone down with No Man's Sky, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the tweet came from an angry employee at the studio. However, for now there is too much conflicting information going around to really point the finger in any one direction. We will update this story should more information come to light.

You wouldn't know it, but for the past three years developer of No Man's Sky, Hello Games, has been embroiled in a legal battle with BSkyB, the owner of the Sky TV service in the UK. The cable TV company wanted the explorative space title to change its name, but Hello Games held on and now they've amicably agreed it can keep it.

BSkyB is a corporate monster that few have been able to stand up to in the past. It previously forced Microsoft to change its cloud-storage platform from SkyDrive to OneDrive, so when Hello Games was hit with its suit thee years ago, you can imagine it was quite a nerve racking experience.

nomansskyimage

It's only possible because Sky owns the trademark for that word and felt that “No Man's Sky,” was too close to allow it to exist. Hello Games felt otherwise though and continued to defend it, despite being a rather small British developer with no big cash stockpile.

And ultimately it seems like Sky changed its mind, or at least was happy to settle for something – the details of the case haven't been revealed. All we do know is that Hello Games' Sean Murray is very happy with the news, as he posted on Twitter that they could finally put the “stupid legal nonsense,” behind them.

As PCGN points out, it's worth wondering if the lawsuit was the reason for the recent delay announcement. It seems hard to imagine launching a game when the name itself is under threat.

No Man's Sky launches 8th of August in the US, 10th of August for most of Europe and 12th of August for those of us in the UK.
