After working on Souls-likes for over a decade, FromSoftware branched out back in 2019, releasing the Activision-published Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Despite being a brand new IP, the game seems to have resonated with a great deal of people, as the studio has now announced that Sekiro has sold over 10 million copies.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the official FromSoftware page revealed this massive milestone, saying (as translated by Google) “SEKIRO: SHADOWS DIE TWICE has sold over 10 million copies worldwide. Thank you to everyone who played this game.”

For comparison, Elden Ring – another new IP from the studio – managed to sell over 20 million copies within its first year. That said, Elden Ring fell much closer to the likes of Dark Souls and Bloodborne in terms of both gameplay and aesthetics, and so it makes sense as to why that game in particular performed so well.

Still, 10 million copies sold is nothing to sniff at, especially for a game which was in many ways a much greater departure when compared to prior FromSoft titles. With the studio now taking chances on more experimental games such as the recently-released Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon, it will be interesting to see whether the team ever chooses to return to the Sekiro series. Here’s to hoping.

In recent years we have seen a push by Sony to adapt many of its well-loved video game IPs into different mediums. Under the banner of PlayStation Productions we have seen the successful release of an Uncharted film as well as the HBO show adaptation of The Last of Us. Last month we reported that Sony has 10 projects in the works under PlayStation Productions, with some even being animated. Now, thanks to one leaker, we know what this project will be.

The anime-focused news account ‘oecuf’ recently took to Twitter to leak two upcoming anime projects, teasing that they are both samurai games – with one being a cross-platform title while the other is a PS exclusive.

Following this, the leaker then confirmed that the two anime projects in the works pertain to FromSoftware’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice as well as an anime adaptation of the PlayStation exclusive Ghost of Tsushima.

Very few additional details were shared, aside from the fact that the announcement is supposedly set to take place soon.

Previously, it was confirmed that a Ghost of Tsushima film was in the works. It is currently unknown whether this will be separate from the anime, or if the two projects are actually one and the same. We will have to wait and see, but either way, an anime adaptation of both Sekiro and Ghost of Tsushima sounds exciting indeed.

Since its launch, Google Stadia has struggled to gain a foothold within the video games industry. The online-only game streaming service has encountered a number of issues on many fronts, including but not limited to its lack of games. In its latest Stadia connect, the search giant tackled this issue head-on, announcing more than a dozen new third-party games which are coming to the service.

The games in question are:

  • Super Bomberman R Online (Autumn 2020)
  • One Hand Clapping (early access; first on Stadia; available now)
  • Dead by Daylight
  • PUBG Season 8
  • Hitman (1st September 2020)
  • Hitman 2 (1st September 2020)
  • Hitman 3 (January 2021)
  • Serious Sam 4 (August 2020)
  • Outrider (Christmas 2020)
  • WWE 2K Battlegrounds (18th September 2020)
  • PGA Tour 2K21 (21st August 2020)
  • NBA 2K21 (Autumn 2020)
  • Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (Autumn 2020)
  • Hello Neighbor (20th September 2020)
  • Hello Neighbor: Hide & Seek (Christmas 2020)

It is worth noting that Super Bomberman R Online and One Hand Clapping are coming first to Stadia, with an indeterminate exclusivity window. Furthermore, Hello Neighbor will be made available to all Stadia Pro members upon its launch.

Lastly, Dead by Daylight will feature cross-play with all other platforms (and will include cross-progression with both Switch and PC), and will be receiving some exclusive features available only on Stadia: Crowd Play and Crowd Choice. Crowd Play will allow streamers to invite their viewers to join in on a trial, while Crowd Choice will put power into the hands of the viewers, allowing them to select whether the streamer plays as a killer or survivor, and which character in particular.

Though the Google Stadia library is still relatively light when compared to other more mature services, Google is continuing to support Stadia beyond what some outside observers may have expected. All that’s left now is to see how these titles perform on the service.

Anthem may not have launched to positive reception but it still went on to be BioWare's biggest game launch ever. Since then though, the game has been slipping in the charts. Beyond that, the latest stats for March video game sales show Ubisoft's The Division 2 earning the top spot, with Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice coming in at number two.

The NPD group has finished tracking hardware and software sales for the games industry throughout March 2019. Overall, hardware sales did decline, although the Nintendo Switch managed to be the most resilient, beating out the PS4 and Xbox One last month. Year-on-year, console sales are down 15% compared to March 2018. Software sales saw a similar year-on-year dip, dropping by 11 percent.

Nintendo-Switch-Shot-02-e1484299745390.jpg

Here is the full top 20 selling games for March 2019:

  1. The Division 2.
  2. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
  3. MLB 19: The Show.
  4. Devil May Cry 5.
  5. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
  6. Red Dead Redemption 2.
  7. NBA 2K19.
  8. Grand Theft Auto V.
  9. Yoshi's Crafted World.
  10. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.
  11. Anthem.
  12. Mario Kart 8.
  13. Jump Force.
  14. New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe.
  15. Far Cry New Dawn.
  16. Minecraft.
  17. Battlefield V.
  18. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
  19. Borderlands.
  20. Assassin's Creed Odyssey.

This list is pretty accurate, although it does have a couple of pitfalls worth keeping in mind. For Nintendo's games, digital sales aren't included in the counting process. Meanwhile, PC digital sales aren't counted for COD, Battlefield, Anthem, The Division 2 or Sekiro.

KitGuru Says: March was a solid month for game releases, with DMC 5, Sekiro and The Division 2 all going on to be successful. What's your favourite game of 2019 so far?

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has been off to an excellent start. From Software's latest masterpiece reviewed well across the board and earned ‘Must Play' status on Metacritic. Activision seems to be pleased with how things are going too, with confirmation that Sekiro sold over two million copies within its first ten days out.

Activision doesn't typically publish games like Sekiro. In fact, nowadays, Activision is perhaps best known for multiplayer titles, including Call of Duty and Destiny, alongside Blizzard's batch of titles. With Sekiro selling well across all platforms, perhaps we'll see Activision put more money into hardcore single-player games once again.

Aside from the 90+ Metacritic rating and high sales, Activision also boasted about Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice being the most viewed game on Twitch at launch. Within its first week, over 1.1 billion minutes worth of the game were watched.

KitGuru Says: I've never been great at the Souls games but I've been really enjoying Sekiro's fast paced combat. Have many of you been playing this since launch? Have you managed to finish the whole game yet?

The release of From Software’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has sparked two heated debates within the gaming community concerning ‘accessibility’ and the possibility of an easier mode. Unfortunately, the two have continuously crossed over, diluting the terminology and causing confusion.

Known for Bloodborne and the Souls series, From Software has gained a reputation for notoriously difficult games that require players to learn the behavioural patterns of enemies in order to defeat them. The majority of the time, this means a whole lot of deaths and restarts, but players have widely agreed that Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is the studio’s hardest game yet.

Due to its sheer difficulty, many have argued that the developer should consider implementing an easier difficulty to make the game more accessible to casual players and those that wish to embrace Sekiro’s more straight-forward narrative presentation compared to the ‘Soulsborne’ series. Despite this, God of War director Cory Barlog argues that accessibility is entirely different to the difficulty of a game and that an easy mode could weaken From Software’s original vision.

“Accessibility has never and will never be a compromise to my vision. To me, accessibility does not exist in contradistinction to anyone's creative vision, but rather it is an essential aspect of any experience you wish to be enjoyed by the greatest number of humans as possible,” Barlog explains on Twitter. “Something can be both difficult and have a good suite of accessibility features.”

While there is some validity to wanting a more flexible experience within Sekiro, many experts consider that the term ‘accessibility’ has been taken out of context during the debate. COO of AbleGamers, Steve Spohn, has tried to provide clarity on the matter:

“The only time the word ‘easy' keeps being mentioned is by people who don't understand what accessibility is,” explains Spohn on Twitter. “Easy is subjective. What is easy for me, might not be easy for someone else. But with difficulty options, we can both enjoy an experience together. People, influential people, journalists, and media outlets are making this confusing by continuing to use the language ‘easy mode' — accessibility means options, not easy gameplay.”

For example, publisher Activision and developer Toys For Bob were lambasted for their omission of full subtitles in Spyro Reignited Trilogy last year, impeding the gaming experience for the hearing impaired. Many more games fail to include a colour blind mode for those with compromised vision. Many developers have rallied behind Barlog and Spohn’s statements that From Software should “do the right thing” by adding more accessibility options into Sekiro.

KitGuru Says: These comments are not to dissuade players from voicing that they would prefer an easier mode, but they do provide food for thought regarding the terminology used when advocating for difficulty options. There are people out there that truly cannot control the character on screen, see the entire menu or absorb the story in the same way as the wider population. Proper accessibility options are important for those people and should not necessarily be confused with different difficulty modes.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has been out for almost a week now and in true Souls-like fashion, the speed runs have already begun. Similarly to other From Software games, Sekiro has excellent level design, with interconnected areas that can be quickly accessed. This kind of design is always inviting to speed runners and one particular streamer has already managed to get through the game in less than an hour.

As part of an ‘Any%' run, Twitch streamer ‘danflesh111' managed to get through Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice in 50 minutes and 52 seconds. You can see the full run below but be warned, there are spoilers for areas and boss fights:

While some Any% speed runs rely on glitches and bugs to cut through areas, this run through Sekiro is mostly achieved through sprinting and well timed jumps, ledge grabs and grappling hooks. Multiple boss fights are also completed during this run, including the final boss of the game.

It is likely that we'll see this time beat relatively soon. As impressive as this first speed run is, there are some areas where jumps or ledge grabs didn't quite land, adding extra time to the overall run. Beyond that, there will be other speed runners looking in to their own tricks and finding their own pathways to get through the game even quicker.

KitGuru Says: Speed runs have always fascinated me and From Software's titles usually pave the way for some of the most impressive ones. Are many of you playing Sekiro at the moment? Are you taking your time with it? Or do you enjoy the challenge of trying to clear areas quickly?

From Software has spent the last few years focussing on the Soul series but now, it is time to move on to something new. Next month, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice will be launching on consoles and PC. For those planning on picking it up for the PC, the minimum and recommended system requirements have now been revealed.

While the Dark Souls series focus on action-RPG elements, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a pure action-adventure game with no classes or character creation. The combat system is also very different, with a focus on staggering opponents in order to deliver a single killing blow, rather than whittling enemies down bit by bit.

The game will be launching on Steam on the 22nd of March. Here are the minimum system requirements:

  • OS: Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10 (64-bit only).
  • CPU: Intel Core i3-2100 or AMD FX-6300.
  • RAM: 4GB.
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 760 or AMD Radeon HD 7950.

The recommended system requirements include:

  • OS: Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10 (64-bit only).
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD Ryzen 5 1400.
  • RAM: 8GB.
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon RX 570.

The final thing worth noting is that this game will only take up 25GB of storage space,

KitGuru Says: Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice isn't far off of its release date now and from the looks of it, it should be easy enough to run on a wide range of hardware. Are any of you planning to pick this one up?

Since the release of Demon Souls, From Software has gone from strength to strength. Now, all eyes are on the studio's next game- Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, which had a promising showing at E3 this year. A From Software game is always going to generate buzz, but the new direction that Sekiro takes has raised a lot of questions from fans of the developer, including what genre the game will be.

While the Dark Souls series is considered to be an RPG, Sekiro will be going in a different direction. After seeing the game in action at E3, PCGamer reports that Sekiro will be an action game, with no classes or stats to level up. This extends to weapons and armour too.

Sekiro will be a full on action-adventure title, with players utilising different gadgets over the course of the game. The grappling hook was shown during the E3 trailer, but more will become available over time through the main protagonist's ‘Shinobi Prosthetic', a tool that replaces your lost hand.

The combat system will also different to what Souls players are used to. This time around, combat is less about chipping away at a health bar, and more about reducing enemy stamina in order to inflict big damage hits and eventually open them up for a lethal finishing move. In some ways, it is comparable to Ni-Oh, which launched last year.

KitGuru Says: While Sekiro will be ditching the RPG-style level up system, this does point towards this game being fairly different to Dark Souls and Bloodbourne. That in itself, is fairly exciting, as it shows that From Software is interested in trying out new approaches to gameplay after many years of Souls-likes. Are many of you looking forward to Sekiro?
