Fighting off the monstrously large Titans in the world of Attack on Titan is a rather creepy experience. Whether you've read through the manga or watched the anime, those 10 story tall, nude-with-no-genitals monsters are always unnerving. The upcoming game for the , Vita, PS3 and PS4 has certainly captured that, with more than a handful of the smiling giants bearing down on the series' heroes in the latest trailer.

Jean decides to get the hell out of dodge

Fortunately there are plenty of people in the world of Attack on Titan to stop them. Eren of course features with his high-spirited vertical manoeuvring, as does Mikasa, cutting down Titans at every turn; perhaps only eclipsed by Levi himself, who makes a habit of removing limbs before delivering the killing blow.

Although there are a lot of cuts in this gameplay showcase, it does give us a good idea of what to expect from the game. The story looks to start from the very beginning of the Manga, but goes well beyond the bounds of the anime into much more advanced stories involving some slightly hairier variants.

There's items to buy, hugely destructible buildings, combat in and out of the city, within the Forest of Giant Trees and more than once players have to deal with the gargantuan threat of both the Armoured Titan and his Colossal friend.

The trailer also showcases some of the extra bonuses you can get with the game. If you pre-order the game from anywhere, you unlock Eren and Levi's cleaning outfits to battle in, as well as a limited number of Attack on Titan hand hand towels. Depending on where you pre-order from (in Japan), you can also get yourself a mouse mat, post cards, posters, calendars and even a cushion, all AoT themed.

There's also a “Treasure Box” edition, which comes with badges, costumes, a soundtrack, bookmark and an “official scouting report,” booklet.

The game is set for release on PS4, PS3 and Vita on the 16th February.

KitGuru Says: I hope this comes over to the west at some point, perhaps with a PC or Wii U port. It actually looks pretty good fun. I'd take a Monster Hunter like game in the AoT universe.

Attack on Titan, or to give it its original title, Shingeki no Kyujin, has been a worldwide success. It's spawned many spin off manga series, an anime cartoon, games and most recently a live action movie. Unfortunately for those involved with that latter property however, it bombed and reviewed horribly. One fan of it though, was original series creator Isayama Hajime, who has reached out to fans to ask them to tell him just why they thought the movie stank.

During a chat with Yahoo News, Isayama said he'd heard a lot of different opinions about the movie, and wanted to take in the good and the bad, “if only to understand them.”

Perhaps he can't see the forest for the trees, since he was supposedly quite involved in the production of the movie. However if his influence on its creation was a heavy one, it will leave fans even more confused, as the modern setting, changed up characters and less-than-stellar special effects left a lot of Japanese fans angry.

The fact that Levi doesn't even feature didn't go over well either.

While the movie's IMDB rating is currently at a reasonable level, its Yahoo Japan's movie page has it rated at just over two stars out of five. Kotaku too slammed it for ditching much of what made the original anime and manga great.

KitGuru Says: Part of what made Attack on Titan so intimidating, particularly in the anime, was how colourful it was and the fact that death came during the day. There was no darkness hiding what was doing on. It was right in-front of you. This looks like it's borrowed from every post-apocalyptic Hollywood film and combined it with a miss-mash of sometimes good, sometimes terrible looking titans.

If you're an anime and/or manga fan, then chances are you've spent some time in the past couple of years being simultaneously exhilarated and depressed, by the relentless and unforgiving slaughter-fest that is Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin). While the next series of the anime isn't set to debut until next year, there's a lot of details emerging about the upcoming live action movie and now we have the first images of the actors in-costume.

Some of the characters come from the books and show, but there's also a lot of new ones, and a few key ones missing. Somehow in the jump from page to silver-screen, Levi didn't make the cut. Your guess as to why is as good as mine.

Still without further ado, here's the announced characters and their promo images:

aot1 aot2

First up with have our two main charcters, Eren and Mikasa, played by Haruma Miura and Kiko Mizuhara. It's interesting to note that contrary to the original story, every actor is Japanese, apart from Mizuhara. She's American by birth. To explain, Attack on Titan has a very broad racial landscape, except for asians, Mikasa being a “half blooded,” descendent of the last of that people.

aot3 aot4

The next two characters, Armin and Hanji deviates from the source material a little more, by making the former's hair black and the latter less gender-neutral. She's also cradling an RPG, which is a technology that doesn't exist in the AoT universe (as far as we know). Perhaps this is set in a more ‘modern' period than the books?

aor5 aor6

Sahsa, or Potato girl has a bow in her shot. I hope that has an explosive tip or it's not going to do much. Jean is certainly less Caucasian than he was in the anime.

aot7 aot8

Shikishima is a new character, described as humanity's greatest soldier, making him a clear replacement for the original Captain Levi. Hiana, played by Ayame Misaki is also new, and appears to be standing in a concrete building. Or perhaps it's a basement of great import?

aor7 aot9

More new characters here… wait, is that a tank?!

aot10 aot11

Extra new characters, one with an axe. Good luck with that buddy.

aot12

Rounding out the new cast is Lil.

It's not entirely clear why the producers have opted for so many new characters, when the source material was full of them, but perhaps it was to account for the all Japanese cast, rather than the show's multi-cultural slant. Which is a bit of a shame, as if there's one thing you can say about the world of Attack on Titan, it isn't racist, everyone pulls together. Except for maybe the fact that (almost) every titan is a white guy, but hey, there's probably a good reason for that buried inside Isayama's skull.

For those who haven't read the manga or watched the anime, I'd suggest not looking at this film's IMDB page, as it contains major first arc spoilers. And I mean major. However for those that already know some of the series' secrets, it's currently slated as being filmed and is set for release next summer.

It will be the first of two films based on the series.

KitGuru Says: I'm glad Jean made the cut as he's one of my personal favourites, but some of the changes here are a little worrying. An RPG? A potential tank? If this has vehicles, propelled explosives and concrete, the swords are starting to look a little redundant, no?

[Thanks EIGA for the images]
