Last week, we reported on the current status of WB’s MultiVersus, with a McDonalds promotion seemingly suggesting that the free-to-play platform fighter could be coming back sooner rather than later. It seems as though this will indeed be the case, as the team have now teased the game’s revival.

Taking to Twitter, the official MultiVersus page returned from an 8-month-long hiatus, saying “*taps mic* testing, testing, 1, 2, 3”. Player1stGames – the developers of MultiVersus replied to the thread, adding “Mic Check! 2, 1, 2!? This seems to be working just fine….”

For the uninitiated, following a beta period, WB’s MultiVersus was shut down in June of last year – with the promise of a full release some time in 2024. It would appear as though the day of its return is finally looming.

As mentioned, last week we speculated that MultiVersus could be returning soon thanks to a promotion announced by McDonalds – and for those who know their history, McDonalds’ promotional crossovers are very tightly scheduled.

Hopefully all this means we will get an official release date for MultiVersus some time in the next few days.

After spending half a year in beta, the Smash Bros-like WB fighting game MultiVersus was shut down in June of last year; with the team promising a relaunch some time in 2024. While no official announcement has been made, a recently-discovered collab with McDonalds suggests that its revival is arriving sooner rather than later.

As discovered by Resetera user ‘Bishop89’, McDonalds’ website was recently updated to include its next collab as part of the company’s Happy Meal children’s menu.

Currently, Happy Meals include mini games themed around Crash Team Rumble, but according to the company the next collab will be with Warner Bros.’ MultiVersus game – suggesting an impending release.

For the uninitiated, McDonalds collabs such as these are rather strict in their timelines, with the infamous splitting of Sonic 3 & Knuckles into two titles being due to a previously-agreed partnership with the fast food chain.

With that in mind, it is highly likely that we will get official confirmation of MultiVersus’ return sooner rather than later.

When Nintendo announced Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the game’s title could not have been more fitting, with the Switch entry featuring every single fighter from the franchise’s history. By the end of its support, Ultimate included 89 total characters and over 100 stages. In discussing potential future entries in the series, Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai claimed that “it's difficult to imagine an increase of this magnitude happening again.”

Taking to his YouTube channel, Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai spoke on the development of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, discussing all things from its initial development; changes made to the formula; DLC woes and more.

In looking to the future of the franchise, Sakurai claimed that whatever comes next will unlikely be able to match the sheer scope of Ultimate, saying:

“As for what comes next for the Smash Bros. series, even I'm not sure. I feel we truly succeeded in making people happy with this game, but now that Smash Bros. has grown to be monstrous in size, I'd say it's difficult to imagine an increase of this magnitude happening again.”

He continued, “Every time, we managed to make a game that I had previously thought impossible, so I can't say for certain there won't be another, but I do think it would be difficult to push it any further than we have.”

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate truly feels like a culmination of the entire fighting game series’ history, with some fans believing that the next entry should take it back to its roots; perhaps in the form of a soft-reboot. We will have to wait and see what Sakurai has in store – although based on his comments, it seems as though even he is unsure where Smash Bros. will go next.

KitGuru says: What do you think of Smash Bros. Ultimate? What would you like to see from the next game? Should the series be rebooted? Let us know down below.

Masahiro Sakura is one of the most well-loved faces in the industry. Being responsible for the creation of not just Kirby but also Super Smash Bros, the director has been involved in the development for every Smash Bros. game. With Ultimate having concluded its post-launch support all the way back in 2021, Sakurai has now addressed the future of the franchise and the extent of his involvement.

In a new video published to Sakurai’s YouTube Channel discussing the creation of games, the Smash Bros. creator spoke on the development of – and the team behind – 2008’s Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

As part of this, Sakurai addressed the future of the franchise and whether the 52 year old will be at all involved, saying “The question is, what happens next time? I mean whatever comes after Smash Bros. Ultimate. One option would be to separate the series itself from the original creator. But for now, at least, I can’t really imagine a Smash Bros. title without me. You might think that’s a natural stance for someone in my role, but I say so speaking objectively. I feel the same way president Iwata did when we formed the team for Smash Bros. Brawl. At present, we don’t have someone who can simply take the reigns…”

Sakurai continued, “Smash Bros. is a massive, important title for Nintendo, so it’s fair to assume there will be another one at some point, but it’s going to take some work to figure out exactly how to make that happen. For my part, I’d like to keep working with Nintendo however I’m able.”

Sakurai’s relationship with Smash Bros has been an interesting one, with the creator coming back time and time again to work on each new entry despite the complexities of its development. Whether we see another Smash Bros. or not, it is clear that fans will be waiting for quite a while. That said, with just how much content is in Ultimate, Sakurai and the team can afford to take their time.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl launched in late 2021 to a wave of positive reception. The Smash Bros-like took many of the best and most well known Nickelodeon stars from across the channel’s history and pitted them together in a free-for-all. Despite its personality-filled roster, the game lacked any voice acting…until now.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the official Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl account said “Our next major FREE update is here – and it's a big one! We're super excited to announce that voice acting and items are available TODAY on PC, @Xbox and @Playstation. @Nintendo Switch coming soon!”

With that, the team also announced the list of voice actors who will be lending their talents to the game, including Tom Kenny as Spongebob, Jim Cummings as Shredder, Abby Trott as April O’Neil and Billy West as Ren and Stimpy – to name just a few. The full cast list can be found HERE.

Back in December 2021, the devs teased that voice acting would be coming to the game, though they offered no time frame for this. While it would have been nice for voice acting to be available at launch, it’s better late than never. Hopefully this update gives All-Star Brawl a nice boost.

With Super Smash Bros. Ultimate finally concluded, many fans are looking for a new crossover-focused fighting game to fill the void. One game that is trying is WB’s MultiVersus. Planned to release some time this year, the game’s roster is slowly being revealed.

In 2021 we saw Nickelodeon release their All Star Brawl game, featuring characters across the many IPs that they own – from SpongeBob to Korra to Nigel Thornberry. While the game continues to receive new characters via free updates, Warner Bros. is preparing to launch its own Smash Bros-like title.

Currently, 13 characters have been announced for WB’s ‘MultiVersus’, with Velma from Scooby Doo being the most recent. Making the announcement on Twitter, the official MultiVersus account said “Jinkies, a clue – Velma is officially part of the #MultiVersus roster! There are more mysteries to uncover about who’s joining the multiverse, and not all of the leads out there are true!”

Unfortunately, this announcement was accompanied with neither any official gameplay nor even a png of the character model. The devs at Sora Ltd. and Bandai Namco set a new standard when it comes to character announcements with Smash Bros. (even if it is partially thanks to a much larger budget) – and so Velma’s reveal seems somewhat lacking.

That being said, the game has yet to be released, and so it is perhaps unfair to compare Smash Bros’ crossover DLC announcements with MultiVersus’ initial roster reveal. Still, the sentiment regarding Smash Bros. influence still stands, and so hopefully MultiVersus is being treated with more care than their roster announcement strategy signifies.

Following the smashing success of Super Smash Bros Ultimate, many publishers saw the opportunity for profits through crossover games. One entry in this new sub-genre was Nickelodeon All Star Brawl. Unfortunately, the game's many iconic characters were missing their voices – though this may change.

Back in September, we reported that the then-upcoming Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl would not feature voice acting – at least not at launch. This subtle hint at a future implementation has now been further solidified.

In a dev update published on the Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl subreddit, the studio confirmed a number of major improvements coming to the game in the near future, namely:

  • The latest free DLC character will be coming to the game pretty soon.
  • There are a bunch of characters and stages in the works right now.
  • Crossplay will be available on Q1 2022

The update concluded with a hint that voice acting would be coming to the game at some point in the future, saying “We've been HEARING your requests, and we'll make sure you'll be HEARING from us soon :)” – all-but-confirming the fact.

While Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl launched in a less-than-perfect state, it represents the biggest attempt at making a Smash Bros clone since 2012’s PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. All of these updates will only serve to make the game better and better. It will be interesting to see where Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl will be one year from now.

Masahiro Sakura is one of the most well-loved faces in the industry. Being responsible for the creation of not just Kirby, but also Super Smash Bros, the director has been involved in the directing for every Smash Bros game. With Ultimate now finally ending its official post-launch support, Sakurai has revealed his thoughts on the future of the franchise.

Following the release of Sora for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the 3rd best-selling Switch game of all time has now seen its official post-launch support ending, with game director Sakurai  moving onto other things. During this interim period between games, Sakurai has conducted an interview with Japanese magazine Famitsu, discussing the future of the franchise as a whole – and whether it can even have one.

As reported by Siliconera, when asked about a sequel, Sakurai said “I am not thinking of a sequel. I am not thinking of it every time. However, I can’t say with certainty that this would be the end of Smash”. That being said, the likelihood of a sequel is in question as according to Sakurai “I need to think whether I must release a Smash game or not, even if I have to do something that would disappoint users.”

As mentioned, Sakurai has directed every Smash Bros. game ever since the first in 1999, leaving him little time to create other art. Despite this, the director clearly holds the franchise close to his heart, with Sakurai claiming that “I currently don’t see a path where Smash can be produced without myself” and even admitting that “Honestly, we did actually try leaving it to someone else, but it didn’t go well.”

Masahiro Sakurai has spent the past 20 years cultivating a fan base who view him as the face of Super smash Bros. Just as much as Sakurai himself doesn’t see a future for Smash without him, likewise so do many fans. With Sakurai having worked on the franchise for over two decades now, it will be interesting to see what he does next.

There have been several attempts to capture the magic of Super Smash Bros. and apply that formula to other franchises. Soon, it looks like WB Games will be making its own attempt at a Smash Bros. style fighting game with crossovers with Warner Bros' IP.

The game first appeared in rumours on Reddit, with a post that claimed the game was being worked on at NeatherRealm, the studio behind Injustice and Mortal Kombat. Some characters said to appear in the game include Shaggy from Scooby Doo, Fred Flinstone, Mad Max, Batman, Johnny Bravo and more.

The rumour gained weight when Jeff Grubb chimed in, confirming that WB is working on a “platform fighter” but it is not being developed by NetherRealm. There is no confirmation on which WB Games studio is working on this game instead.

The rumour gains a bit more weight with news that Warner Bros. applied to trademark the term “MULTIVERSUS” for use in the videogame market.

‘Dante in Smash’ has become a popular phrase ever since Super Smash Bros expanded beyond Nintendo IP. With Super Smash Bros. Ultimate including more characters than ever before, hopes to finally see Dante in Smash were higher than ever. These hopeful fans should have perhaps been careful with what they wished for, as Dante has now been confirmed to be coming to Smash Bros. but not in the way fans hoped.

As part of today’s recent Smash Bros. showcase, which had Sakurai show off the latest DLC character – Kazuya Mishima from the Tekken series – it was revealed that a number of new Mii Fighter costumes would be making their way into Smash Bros.

Dante from Devil May Cry, Shantae, the Dragonborn from Skyrim and Lloyd from Tales of Symphonia are all coming to Smash Bros. Ultimate on the 29th of June – the same day as Kazuya.

With only one more DLC character set to be coming to Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Dante confirmed to be a Mii Fighter, it is safe to assume he will not be the game’s final character. Who will be the final character to be part of one of the biggest crossovers in media history? Master Chief? Kratos? Aloy? Waluigi? We will have to wait and see.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate serves as one of Nintendo’s greatest success stories. The game has not only managed to sell over 17 million copies in just over a year, but the fighting game has also Been dubbed the “biggest crossover in gaming history” featuring over 75 characters from dozens of franchises. All good things must come to an end however, and Sakurai has now confirmed that after the completion of the Fighters Pass Vol. 2, no new fighters are set to join the roster.

Publishing a column in the latest issue of Japanese magazine Famitsu (and translated by NintendoEverything), Sakurai announced that following the release of the six characters from the second Fighters Pass, no new characters will be added. Sakurai also provided further details on a number of questions relating to the game. He stated that “Smash Bros. Ultimate will be over” when the final character is released, insinuating that perhaps large updates and patches are set to stop after the release of the final character too.

Furthermore, Sakurai reiterated the fact that Nintendo has chosen the six characters joining as part of the Fighters Pass, not him. That being said, “if a character doesn’t make sense, he can refuse it” although he apparently chooses not to do so.

Sakurai concluded by stating that he “doesn’t move based on his own desires like wanting to make or direct a new game” but instead “works to make other people other than himself happy.” None of the characters from the second Fighters Pass have been announced, although all six are slated to be released in 2020 and 2021. Upon the completion of the Fighters Pass, the total number of characters in Smash Bros. Ultimate will be 88.

Nintendo has been the punching bag of the home console world for the past couple of years, with people poking fun at the slow uptake of the Wii U and the fact that many of the major third party developers haven't deigned to port their games to the system. While hardly nice, it was fair criticism as the Wii U really did struggle out of the gate, despite its year long lead in ahead of the other major console makers. But now it's all starting to turn around and Nintendo is projected to triple its profits by the end of the year.

Much of Nintendo's resurgence in the past six months can be put down to Mario Kart 8's strong outing, garnering positive press for its console and reminding people that the Wii U's library of games is somewhat unique to its system. Compared with The Xbox One and PS4, which have the odd exclusive, Nintendo's games, while less hyped, are quite different.

Super Smash Bros sales have helped continue the wave of growth for the Wii U, as well as – to a lesser extent – Hyrule Warriors, with both titles reviewing well among critics and the public.

Amiibo are projected to give Nintendo a big financial boost over the next six months

Thanks to these popular titles, Nintendo is expected to sell more than 3.6 million Wii U systems by the end of the year, which, combined with predictions of strong sales of Nintendo's new Amiibo line of NFC enabled figurines, is projected by Bloomberg, to give it a 300 per cent increase in profit, reaching some 37 billion yen (£200 million).

If this turns out to be true, it will be excellent news for Nintendo, since it validates its strategy to remain somewhat removed from the console bickering between Microsoft and Sony, which has ultimately seen Sony come out on top with its PS4 console. Instead of attempting to compete with those two, Nintendo has positioned itself as a secondary system, making it quite likely that a lot of console gamers will pick it up as well as one of the others.

Of course these predictions could turn out to be wrong, but considering Smash Bros sold over half a million units in the first few days of release in the US and Mario Kart 8 is still selling well, that seems unlikely. Amiibos are also becoming hard to come by, as retailers sell out and the Gamecube adaptor for the Wii U is almost impossible to find for under $100 right now.

KitGuru Says: Quite an impressive turnaround for Nintendo, but it will need to keep it up if it wants to maintain that momentum. What's next? Zelda and Starfox next year.

You see Nintendo, for me, Smash Bros was always a game I could play with my girl, or a friend that isn't a big gamer and still have fun. I could take it easy if I wanted, or give them a handicap – or if I'm playing against my brother, give myself one. I imagine that will be exactly the same in the new Smash Bros when it hits shelves on 5th December and thanks to your earlier Direct video, I know there's going too be loads of cool features, like eight player battles.

So why did your Amiibo trailer imply that the only way to beat level 50 characters, is to have a level 50 character?

I'm sure that was just a way for you to create an underdog story in this ridiculously long trailer, for a technology that anyone who's seen Disney Infinity or Skylanders, is well familiar with. You take the model, you put it on the thing and then you play with that character.

amiibo
Us? Yea we bring these to the park to…. not use them. Yea…

I have to give you props for not making those Amiibos a mandatory purchase to use those characters, but your big instructional video on what the hell Amiibo is and does, has just left me with loads of questions instead.

What does levelling do? Is it impossible to beat a level 50 with a level 1? How exactly do all these children store these in their back pockets without crushing them? What more do I have to do, beyond beating my brother at Nintendo, to get the girl?

I ultimately figured out you wanted me to do some research on my own, so I visited your site Nintendo and beyond showing me that I was going to need to spend a whole £11 per figure, all I really learned was that Amiibos can “fight alongside” me and I can customise its stats.

KitGuru Says: So I'll say again: can a level 1 beat a 50? If not, I think that's a real shame.

I love massive local multiplayer. Four players is great and all, but if you can ever find a game that supports more than that and get enough people in a room, chances are you're in for a treat. It's why I'm still hoping Mutiny! somehow hits its funding target and why I always have my Megadrive hooked up, with a copy of Micro Machines Turbo Tournament '96 slotted in. This December though, we'll be able add another game to that list of massive-local-multiplayer games, as Nintendo's Smash Bros Wii U is going to allow for up to eight players to battle it out locally.

This was revealed by Nintendo in its latest Nintendo Direct broadcast to fans, showing off some gameplay, as well as some of the features not yet announced – like the larger local battles. Unfortunately, due to that many players not adequately fitting on the standard maps, Nintendo did have to designate four larger versions of certain maps for the up-to-eight player games.

ashbros

The 30 minute broadcast also shows a comparison between many of the stages found on the recently released – and well received – 3DS version and the Wii U version. There's plenty of classic maps done up with prettier textures and better lighting than previous games and there's a bunch of new stages too, including ones with unique mechanics, like Donkey Kong County, which has you fighting on two planes with barrels transporting you between the two.

Certain maps will also field time sensitive extras, such as random attacking enemies that appear at night and even some that can join the player's side if they win them over.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0BBGzfw0pQ']

Along with stock and time based battles, this game also sees the return of coin-battles, as well as stamina mode, where players start at high health and gradually weaken as their HP goes down. Of course you can play around with all of those sorts of options in Special Smash too.

Classic mode returns, but its progression is a little different than before. You'll face off against increasing difficult challenges, though who you face next will depend on how you won in the previous round (Nintendo didn't really expand on this point). There will also be challengers and a rival to contend with, keeping the single player portion of the game relatively random. However if you get bored of playing alone, a cooperative player can fight alongside you, helping you to victory.

And that's not even mentioning the (up-to) four player Smash Tour, which acts like a turn based, real time brawling board game with RPG mechanics.

There really is a lot that Nintendo covered in just a short half hour, so if you're a fan of the series or plan to grab a copy when this lands on Wii U on 5th December (in the EU. 21st December in NA), have a watch, it's well worth it.

Since we now live in a world dominated by digital distribution, especially in the case of music and games, it's great to see many different developers and publishers releasing their games worldwide at the same time, so everyone can enjoy them together no matter where they live. However Nintendo doesn't seem to have gotten that memo, as its latest first party releases have all been delayed after dropping in one region or another. While Mario Kart 8 was only pushed back by a couple of days from its Japanese debut, Hyrule Warriors saw almost a month of delays and now Smash Bros on the Wii U is hitting the US a full two weeks before the EU.

Curiously in this instance however, Japan isn't getting the game until the same day as the EU, which is a reverse from the 3DS version of the game, which landed in Japan back in mid-September, only arriving in the EU and US in early October.

For the Wii U version though, our friends across the pond are getting access to the latest generation of the Nintendo brawler on the 21st November, while the rest of the world won't get a chance to play until the 5th December.

poke

Never fret though Nintendo fans, as you can dish out more money for the game before it even arrives. Nintendo's upcoming version of Skylanders, the Amiibos – real world figures of Nintendo characters that you can import into your Smash Bros game – are going to be available from the 28th November. The earliest available figures will be Mario, Peach, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Link, Fox, Samus, Wii Fit Trainer, Villager, Pikachu, Kirby and Martin.

The rest, including everyone's death-staring nemesis, Luigi and Diddy Kong, will show up a  little later, on the 19th. As Eurogamer points out, some of these figures will end up in Wii U Smash Bros Bundles as well, featuring a copy of the game and one or two of the little NFC enabled models.

KitGuru Says: I don't understand the need for staggered releases anymore. It really seems like it's more likely to hurt Nintendo here, especially since it only gives it three weeks before Christmas. It's great that this hasn't been pushed to 2015, but 20 days for parents to cotton on isn't enough.

A modder has managed to get the GameCube controller working with the 3DS handheld for use with the upcoming Super Smash Bros game. The GameCube pad appears to be a favorite amongst Smash Bros fans and Nintendo is capitalizing on that by releasing a Wii U adapter for the controller, Amazon even listed a Wii U Smash Bros, GameCube controller bundle just last week.

Some technical work is needed to get the controller working on a 3DS but the bits required don't cost all that much. Detailed instructions are available on github (link down below), you can check out a video of the controller working with a few games on the 3DS:

In the US, the parts required cost around $10, you can see the parts list, HERE. The creator has also released the source code for his button mapping program, which you can find, HERE.

The process doesn't actually require you to open up the 3DS or mess with any internals, you just have to tape the controller adapter to the back of your handheld and when you're done, you can just take it off. You can see pictures of the process, HERE.

KitGuru Says: People have been having problems with the 3DS circle pad while playing the Smash Bros demo so this little mod could help those people out quite a bit. However, this could also give modders an unfair advantage during multiplayer matches as not everyone will care enough to make the gamepad work.

If you've been playing Smash Bros on Nintendo's various consoles over the years, then chances are you've felt the panic of being on your last life against an opponent with more life than you. You need to be nimble and keep moving, as just one hit will send you flying off screen and your opponent to victory. However in the Wii U version of Smash Bros, that might be the perfect time to go on the offensive, as damaged players will have their knockback strength buffed.

smashbrosu

The knockback boost has been confirmed for the 3DS version of the game and is therefore likely to feature in the Wii U version too. The game is already available on handhelds in Japan, though Western audiences won't get a chance to try out the new feature (and characters, stages etc.) until the 3rd October. Smash Bros on the Wii U, won't be coming out for another couple of months.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZPxLLaL4N8′]

In the above video, CLASH talks about what they describe as the “Rage Effect,” which along with emitting smoke/steam from a character as it takes more and more damage, boosts their knock back abilities by a noticeable margin. The difference isn't enough to change the game in its entirety, you're still in a better position if you're on a lower per centage than your opponent, but clearly we'll need to be more careful if going in for the kill.

Mario Kart 8 was bound to be a hit. The series has never failed to net Nintendo a heap of praise from young and old fans alike, but with the release of its latest iteration, the pressure was really on to help turn around the fortunes of the Wii U. Fortunately for Nintendo, it seems like it's certainly taken a step in the right direction, with MK8 helping Wii U software sales increase almost five fold.

According to statistics from Gamasutra's JVM, estimations for the Wii U's software sales increased by 479 per cent year on year in June, with a total of 139,000 games sold in the UK. While this doesn't exactly top the Xbox One, which sold 325,000, or the PS4 which sold 460,000 (or in-fact, the PS3 or Xbox 360), it represents a massive uptake in Wii U software, something Nintendo desperately needed.

sales

While there is likely to be a small drop off in July, as the main Mario Kart purchases have been made, it's still big news for Nintendo in in the UK, where it has struggled tremendously since its release. While Japan and the US have kept up a steady, if low, stream of hardware and software Wii U sales, the UK has been horribly stagnant. Not so any more it seems.

The question is, can Nintendo maintain it? Super Smash Bros is the next, big first party title from the company and that's not due until near the end of the year. There are other big releases coming of course, but that's the one with the potential to deliver a Mario Kart 8 level of attention and praise on Nintendo's ill-fated system.

Nintendo has had a pretty good E3 this year, it's starting to turn things with the Wii U around and people are finally interested in the console. However, with all of the buzz around Mario Kart 8 and the upcoming Super Smash Bros game, people have been wondering if Nintendo would ever consider integrating Twitch in to its console, much like the PS4 and Xbox One.

However, it doesn't look like Nintendo is very interested in Twitch streaming. During an interview with Polygon, Nintendo of America boss, Reggie Fils-Aime was asked if Twitch streaming was something Nintendo had considered bringing to the Wii U, he answered by saying:

“We don't think streaming 30 minutes of gameplay by itself is a lot of fun, your specific question of just purely streaming gameplay, what we've got to think through is, so what's fun about that? From a consumer standpoint, what's fun about it?”

twitch-600x250

The Nintendo executive then went on to say: “Kart is fun because it’s a highlight of the race. You can make some choices as to what parts are going to be shared. We think that makes it interesting, and obviously the meme of the Luigi death stare is wonderful when that comes out of that type of experience.”

Nintendo believes that in order for it to keep streaming fun, it would have to curate the content:

“So for us, what we're doing at the Nokia theatre with the Smash Invitational, we loved that streamed because that's where you are able to see how these players perform, the moves they make, you can learn something,” he said. “But that's different than watching Joe Blow's 30 minute stream, which may or may not have something that's all that interesting. In the end we've got to make sure that it's fun.”

KitGuru Says: I've seen a lot of commenters on the Internet today claiming that Nintendo hates Twitch. However, what I thought Reggie was getting at is that not everyone can provide a good stream, you need a face-cam, audience interaction and a good personality in order to keep people engaged.

Nintendo's pre-recorded press conference has now come and gone and while there was certainly a little more polish in its intro thanks to there being more than one possible take (giving them the chance to have a Robot Chicken sequence of all things), one of the first big take homes, was that in the upcoming Smash Bros, we'll be able to play as Mii characters.

These new Miis can come in several flavours. There's Brawlers, Fighters and Gunners, which have movesets inspired by Captain Falcon, Link and Samus respectively, thereby potentially offering a decent challenge to the standard characters.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GisRY6h100U']

Skip to the three minute mark to see the Mii's in action, but if you do that, you'll miss Nintendo's US president, Reggie Fils-Aime literally punching the crap out of Satoru Iwata.

Each of the Miis can choose several special moves, so none of them will be identical. This feature was also designed to give everyone access to any fighter they can come up. While the Mii Maker is hardly the most versatile tool, the idea is to let you bring anyone into the game you can think of.

miifighter
I'm blatantly making Ivan Drago

Nintendo also showed off a new product it's working on related to Smash Bros (and potentially other games too) called amiibos, which if you've seen Disney Infinity or Skylanders, you've seen this sort of tech before. Nintendo characters with NFC chips in them, will let you play as certain characters in Smash Bros – pottentially limited edition ones too – just by touching the figure to the Gamepad. It will also store data on itself. Wins, losses, special combos will all be recorded and will let the character “evolve,” as time goes on.

Could that be a hint of things to come with potentially a Pokemon amiibo? It would certainly be a massive money maker for Nintendo.

In other Smash Bros news, the 3DS version is being pushed back slightly to 3rd October, rather than its original September date. The Wii U version is still set for “fall” this year.

Then consider stopping by E3 while you're there, as Nintendo has announced that it'll be holding the first tournament on the new version of the game at the gaming expo, with over 3,000 people set to take part.

It's called the Super Smash Bros. International and it's first come first served, so if you want to take part, be at the Nokia Plaza at 9:30 on the 10th when Nintendo starts handing out wrist bands. The show doors won't open until later that day (12:00PM) but the tournament begins shortly after at 4:00PM.

Nintendo won't be at E3 again this year, instead it will be hosting a Super Smash Bros tournament at Best Buy stores throughout the US on the day as well as hosting a Nintendo Direct conference for all of the big announcements.

Nintendo opted to not do a big E3 presentation last year too, instead it held mini-events that would allow anyone from the public to come and try out the company's new games and systems. It looks like it must have gone down well last year as not going to E3 might be Nintendo's strategy moving forward.

Smash Bros

The Nintendo Direct will go live at roughly 5PM GMT on Tuesday the 10th of June and will discuss “further details about the gaming experiences on the way for Nintendo platforms in 2014 and beyond.” Obviously those going to E3 won't completely miss out as there will be some live game demo's on the show floor hosted by Nintendo America’s ‘Treehouse’ Product Development department.

The Press release reads: “Over the last few years, Nintendo has repeatedly reinvented its approach to E3 by creating unique ways to break news and get fans at home involved in the fun, while also offering great experiences for on-site attendees. That mission continues in 2014 as Nintendo offers a series of new channels to communicate news directly to its key audiences, including fans, media, analysts, investors and business partners.”

KitGuru Says: This is a smart move from Nintendo, while Sony and Microsoft are battling for the attention of those who are actually at the show, Nintendo will be out in the public, allowing anyone to come and see what they've got to announce along with a Smash Bros tournament.

If you were excited by the idea of playing as Mega Man, Villager, Wii Fit Trainer or Little Mac in the upcoming Wii U and 3DS Super Smash Bros game, then you'll probably be interested to learn that they aren't the only newcomers to the party. Both Charizard and Greninja Pokemon will be fully playable characters, neither requiring a secondary trainer character to use them.

This announcement came yesterday as part of the latest Nintendo Direct address and brings the total number of playable characters in the game to 29, suggesting there must be one more reveal to come. These two latest ones join Lucario and Pikachu to make four separate characters from the same franchise, which brings it in-line with the Mario Games in terms of character choice.

Other news we learned in the address, includes the fact that old characters like Zero Suit Samus (who will also be a selectable character) have been upgraded, in her case with Rocket Boots. Sheik has new moves like bust grenade and bouncing fish, while Yoshi will stand up straighter instead of acting like he's waiting to be mounted.

There will be a distinct difference between the 3DS and Wii U versions, with the former's levels inspired by handheld games, whilst the latter will be based mainly on previous home console creations. Players will have bosses to fight as they progress through the game, though they can use these to their advantage to have them attack other players.

When offline players will also be able to craft their own movesets for characters, though that feature will be disabled for online competitive play. Nintendo also teased elements that would link both the console and the handheld version of the game together, though it wasn't very clear on how.

Smash Bros Wii U will launch in Winter 2014, whilst the 3DS version will become available sometime this summer.

KitGuru Says: The last few Smash Bros games have been huge hits in my house, so I've no doubt this one will be too. It's a shame it's going to take so long for it to come out on the Wii U though, Nintendo could really do with another big seller to get units shifting, even if Mario Kart 8 is just around the corner.

For those that don't know, Nintendo attempted to ban all streams of its console brawler, Super Smash Bros Melee, from the latest EVO fighting games tournament. It's a good thing it went back on that pledge however, because it became the biggest stream that the competition has ever had.

In total, over 130,000 people watched the Melee part of the throw down, leading co-founder of the event, Tom Cannon, to say that this could have been the “most watched fighting game in history.” .

That Jigglypuff does nothing but double jump kick… boooring

Some of those numbers could probably be attributed to the fact that Nintendo created such a fuss in the first place, but not all of them.

Unfortunately for Smash Bros fans, the stream numbers were eventually topped by Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, which ended up doing 145,000 people. What this does show though, is that the fighting genre is growing nicely alongside other more mainstream competitive games, like MOBAs and FPS.

KitGuru Says: Anyone know why Melee was the game of choice and not Brawl?
