With the OnePlus 6 just around the corner, rumours have been running rampant with the only official confirmed specification being the device’s iPhone X-styled notch. The company has since taken to its website to reveal what customers can expect from the next flagship, confirming much of what we already know.

Detailed on its website under the title ‘Our Pursuit of Burdenless Speed’, the company reveals that the OnePlus 6 will house Qualcomm’s latest commercial mobile processor, the Snapdragon 845, alongside a maximum of 8GB of RAM.

As suggested with the speculated pricing of the devices across all of its variants, the OnePlus 6 will offer an upper end of 256GB of storage, a step up from the OnePlus 5T which was capped at 128GB Although it hasn’t been confirmed, it is believed that the device will also come in a slightly cheaper 128GB version and an entry-level 64GB variant.

OnePlus is pushing its marketing in the way of “burdenless speed” in that it wants to reduce the likelihood of the device freezing to just 1/1000 percent, even if it is recording 4K video. Aside from the mention of this ability, it is not yet known at what frame rate the OnePlus 6 will be able to record ultra-high-definition footage at.

With the mention of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, which has recently been focusing on its mobile port a lot more, it seems that the OnePlus 6 will be geared towards the influx of demanding games on the portable platform. Aside from the latest commercial processor and a sizeable amount of RAM, it is uncertain as to how the company plans to stand out from the crowd, especially in light of the unique 120Hz display on the Razer Phone.

KitGuru Says: So long as OnePlus stick to its key target of balancing price to performance, the OnePlus 6 is sure to be a staple that can contend with the best in the smartphone market. It’s already half way there, sporting the latest in terms of hardware, but do you think that the OnePlus 6 is shaping up nicely? What would you like to see from the flagship device?

Earlier this week, Qualcomm officially announced its Snapdragon 845 chip that will presumably power the majority of flagship smartphones throughout 2018. Details were originally scarce, but the company has since given a full rundown of what to expect from the new mobile processor.

Upgrading from the Snapdragon 835’s Kryo 280, the new Snapdragon 845 features a Kryo 385 CPU which boasts a 30 percent improvement on its high-performance cores and a 15 percent increase on its low-power cores. It does this by retaining the previous eight cores but pushing its four performance cores to 2.8GHz and its four efficient cores to 1.8GHz.

Its graphics core has replaced the Adreno 540 for the Adreno 630 visual processing subsystem, bringing in a hefty 30 percent increase to the chip’s graphical performance and 64x more high-dynamic range colour information for video capture and playback. In fact, 30 percent seems like the magic number as the GPU and CPU combined help keep the chip about 30 percent more power efficient over its predecessor.

The Snapdragon 845 introduces its Spectra 280 image signal processor (ISP) to help with 4K HDR video capture at 60 frames per second (FPS), a first for smartphones, as well as high definition slow-motion video up to 480FPS. Still images will benefit from its ability to produce 60 images-per-second up to 16 megapixels in detail.

Qualcomm hasn’t forgotten about security, either, ensuring that the Snapdragon 845 includes a “vault-like secure processing unit.” This is pretty much Qualcomm’s own isolated subsystem that houses its own CPU, power supply, Crypto engine, random number generator and embedded private RAM, improving biometric support and encryption beyond anything we’ve seen before from a consumer mobile “platform.”

The company has already begun shipping to manufacturers, so it’s likely to make an appearance at upcoming events such as CES.

KitGuru Says: Qualcomm is pushing the mobile VR and AR scene quite hard with its new chip, so it will be interesting to see the impact it will have alongside Microsoft’s Windows Mixed Reality platform as both push into 2018. Still, my worry is how much more cost will fall on the consumer.

As we approach 2018, many are wondering what new features phones will possess, including what will power them. Many devices, including the Samsung Galaxy S9 have already been rumoured to include Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 845 SoC, which seems all the more likely now the processor has been confirmed to appear in the Xiaomi Mi 7.

Qualcomm’s previous Snapdragon 835 has been the most dominant mobile chip on the market, powering the latest of Samsung’s Galaxy series including the S8 Plus and Note 8, as well as the Pixel 2 and Razer’s first step into the phone foray.

On Tuesday, the company revealed its new flagship successor, with the Xiaomi’s Lei Jun stepping up to announce its upcoming Mi 7 smartphone will be one of the first to house the processor.

“Xiaomi is committed to making devices that combine cutting-edge innovations in technology and beautiful design while defying price expectations, and we have chosen Snapdragon 845 to power our next flagship smartphone,” stated Jun.

The Xiaomi Mi 7 is set to launch early 2018, with Samsung’s Galaxy S9 and LG’s G7 pegged to follow suit with its choice of processor thereafter. Samsung, however, does have its own Exynos SoCs that it plans to use to some extent. It’s also possible that the Galaxy S9 could come out earlier than the Mi 7, which would follow in the Galaxy S8’s footsteps as the first device to house Qualcomm’s new chip.

Beyond this, Qualcomm has kept hush about the details of its Snapdragon 845 processor. No doubt many high-end, flagship handsets will sport the new chip, alongside ARM-powered laptops and perhaps VR headsets too.

KitGuru Says: While I should be excited about the prospect of newer technology opening more doors, with regards to smartphones I can’t help but think of the pricing and how much further it might go up because of it. Hopefully the new functionality, whatever it may be, will be a worthy price to performance upgrade.

This year, Samsung has more than made up for its Galaxy Note 7 blunder with both the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy Note 8. However, as we edge closer to 2018, it is time to start looking at the next generation. We have already heard that Samsung’s Galaxy S9 may launch earlier than expected and now, we are hearing that it may be the first smartphone to sport Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 845.

According to the Russian tech analyst, Eldar Murtazin, Qualcomm may once again tap Samsung to manufacture its new Snapdragon processors. Samsung has already been producing the Snapdragon 835 and it may end up manufacturing the Snapdragon 845 too.

According to Murtazin, Qualcomm is set to begin showing the Snapdragon 845 in Hong Kong this week. The Galaxy S9 will then be the first consumer smartphone to feature it. Beyond that, he also claims that the S9 will come out a month earlier than usual, so we may see it in February rather than March.

Previously, supply chain sources indicated that Samsung is operating on an earlier/accelerated timeline for the Galaxy S9, with orders of OLED panels shipping early. If Samsung is also producing the Snapdragon 845 this time around, then it may have everything it needs to be a step ahead in 2018.

KitGuru Says: At the end of February, the Mobile World Congress takes place in Barcelona. If Samsung is going to launch the S9 a month early, then it may end up using the event to start showing it off to the world.

It looks like Qualcomm may be teaming up with Samsung once again for its 2018 flagship system on chip (SoC) as reports this week indicate that the pair have reached a deal to have Samsung co-develop the Snapdragon 845 processor.

Samsung has been working with Qualcomm for a while not, with the two companies working closely together on the creation of the Snapdragon 835, which is rolling out in various flagship smartphones this year, including the Galaxy S8. According to a report on The Investor, sources are now claiming that Samsung and Qualcomm will renew this partnership for the Snapdragon 845.

Recently, Samsung unveiled its second generation 10nm process, which may be precisely why Qualcomm wants Samsung in charge of fabricating the Snapdragon 845. The '10nm Low Power Plus' process is said to deliver a ten percent boost to raw performance and a 15 percent reduction in power consumption, which would be beneficial for mobile devices.

Qualcomm may have considered TSMC for fabrication but Apple has apparently contracted the fab for its upcoming iPhone SoCs, so they have their hands full with Apple's 10nm order.

KitGuru Says:Given that Samsung is already fabricating the Snapdragon 835, it would make sense for Qualcomm to renew for the Snapdragon 845, though we still don't know exactly when this chip will debut. It is also worth noting that Qualcomm has not confirmed plans for a Snapdragon 845 yet either, so this information is all unofficial for the time being.
