The Asus Padfone was, and still is regarded as a very unique device. After all, it is a smartphone, tablet and laptop hybrid. Launched at Mobile World Congress in late February, expectations were that it would launch sometime in April. April has been and gone and the only Padfone news in recent weeks has been pre-orders beginning in Taiwan and rumours of an Italian launch later in May.

The Asus Padfone could be facing delays due to a shortage of Snapdragon S4 chipsets

A recent tweet from Asus' Indonesia division brings up the possibility of the Padfone launch being delayed in at least some areas. The tweet roughly translates to the fact that Qualcomm is still experiencing Snapdragon S4 shortages and that this is the chipset being used in the Padfone. The Verge got in contact with Asus and a company spokesperson confirmed that the Snapdragon S4 platform is indeed facing shortages.

While this does not confirm that the Padfone will indeed face a delay it is certainly possible. Especially so given the facts that nearly of the USA's LTE enabled networks will need a Snapdragon chipset within its phones and the chipsets are being produced on a relatively infant 28nm manufacturing process.

KitGuru says: Delays are never good, especially for niche products like the Padfone. Hopefully the possibility of delays remain just that; possibilities.

Qualcomm's next generation mobile chipset is known as Snapdragon S4 “Krait” and will integrate a quad core processor, a more advanced Adreno 225 GPU and LTE connectivity. This will be the first major new architecture in a couple of generations of Snapdragon chipsets.

The new System on Chip from Qualcomm is designed to go up against  Texas Instrument's OMAP 5 series, Samsung's new series of Exynos and Nvidia's Tegra 3 chipsets.

With their desire to eventually replace digital cameras with smartphones the Image Signal Processor (ISP) is much improved in Snapdragon S4. Still pictures up to 20 megapixels in size are able to be taken while full HD 1080p video at 30 FPS is supported.

Zero shutter lag will also make an appearance and has already been seen on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Snapdragon S4 will be able to support up to three cameras (two rear facing sensors and one front facing,) for improved 3D smartphones.

Over on the software side of things there is improved autofocus, auto exposure, auto white balance, blink/smile detection, gaze estimation, image stabilisation (video above) and range finding.

As we move into an era of mystical things that aren't always there, augmented reality is supported alongside gesture control (video above.) This will allow for Kinect-like gaming on your smartphone or tablet.

Kitguru says: Qualcomm has laid down their cards; now let's see what OMAP 5 and Samsung's Exynos chipsets have in store for us.
