Since AMD is on the cusp of releasing its 3rd generation of Ryzen Threadripper high-end desktop processors, we thought this would be an ideal time to return to testing socket TR4 CPU coolers or sTRX4 as it is soon to be known, on our Ryzen Threadripper 2950X test bench.

Arctic has perfectly timed the release of its new Freezer 50 TR CPU cooler to coincide with the impending launch of 3rd generation AMD Ryzen Threadripper. We have a sample of the Arctic Freezer 50 TR and will be putting it through its paces today, along with adding another TR4 specific cooler to our results chart, The be quiet! Dark Rock Pro TR4.

The Arctic Freezer 50 TR is the company’s first attempt at a high-end cooling solution specifically for AMD’s Threadripper platform. Our testing will provide an insight into how the Freezer 50 TR measures up against other TR4 specific coolers from rival manufacturers.

Artic claims the Freezer 50 TR is an extremely powerful cooler for AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors. The familiar dual tower design and eight heat pipe configuration should be good enough to put the Freezer 50 TR up there with some of the better performing TR4 specific coolers we have tested in the past.

However, the thermal transfer plate does not completely cover the IHS of AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors – Arctic says the heat pipes are designed to be positioned over critical areas of Threadripper dies, to provide optimal thermal transfer.

Arctic’s Freezer 50 TR features a large CPU contact surface with eight U shaped direct touch heat pipes to ensure high-efficiency heat dissipation and excellent cooling performance. 120mm and 140mm Arctic P fans are built into the shroud of the Freezer 50 TR and are optimised for high static pressure, through a wide speed range to guarantee effective and quiet cooling of AMD Threadripper processors.

Another first for Arctic is the addition of RGB lighting in the Freezer 50 TR. The implementation of addressable RGB is designed to combine high-performance cooling with striking aesthetics. The Arctic Freezer 50 TR includes thirteen addressable RGB LEDs that can be controlled either by major motherboard manufacturer software or by an optional Arctic ARGB lighting controller.

The Arctic Freezer 50 TR offers exceptional value and is priced significantly lower than similar high-end AMD Threadripper specific CPU coolers from rival manufacturers. The initial version of the Freezer 50 TR is available to purchase now. A further version with remote control RGB LED lighting is available at a slightly higher price.

Arctic has launched the Freezer 50 TR cooler today. It is the first high-end socket TR4 specific cooler from the company and offers competition to the likes of the be quiet! Dark Rock Pro TR4, Noctua NH-U14S and the Cooler Master Wraith Ripper.

The Arctic Freezer 50 TR is an extremely powerful cooler for AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors. With the launch of Threadripper 3000 imminent, this could be great timing from Arctic, that's if AMD sticks with its socket-agnostic philosophy and retains the same TR4 configuration. However, it is safe to say the Arctic freezer 50 TR will support all previous socket TR4 CPU/motherboard combinations.

Arctic has implemented a dual tower eight heat pipe design into the Freezer 50 TR, with two Arctic P-Fans in push-pull configuration to direct airflow across the cooling fins. The Freezer 50 TR is the first cooler in the Freezer family to feature addressable RGB lighting to “combine high performance with striking design”, according to Arctic.

“With the Freezer 50 TR, the target was simple yet hard to reach: we had to be the best air cooler in the market and be able to cope with the amazing wattage that the Threadripper can pull out”. said Vincent Andre, Technical Director at Arctic. “Countless hours of design, simulation and testing were necessary, but I think we have reached our target. With A-RGB integration, the Freezer 50 TR is not only the most powerful ARCTIC air cooler to date, it‘s also the first-ever with lighting effects”.

Integrated RGB lighting in the Arctic Freezer 50 TR can be controlled and configured by motherboard manufacturer software from Asus Aura Sync, Gigabyte RGB Fusion, MSI Mystic Light Sync and ASRock Polychrome. Arctic will include an RF remote control for users who would prefer to control and configure RGB lighting manually in a model coming later. In terms of specification, the Arctic Freezer 50 TR features eight 6mm Direct Touch heat pipes and 104 aluminium fins of 0.4mm thickness. It measures 147.8mm x 149.5mm x 165mm (L x W x H) and weighs in at just over 1.2 Kg. The included Arctic P-Fans feature fluid dynamic bearings with 4-pin PWM control.

The Arctic Freezer 50 TR can be purchased immediately from Amazon for £59.99. The Freezer 50 TR with A-RGB Controller is expected to be available in early November.

KitGuru says: The Arctic freezer 50 TR certainly has the potential to perform well when cooling Threadripper. We will be getting a sample to review soon, so be sure to check that out on the site when it becomes available.

You'll need a good cooler like the Wraith Ripper

The post Cooler Master Wraith Ripper TR4 Cooler Review first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
With the likely release of 3rd Generation Threadripper just around the corner, here at KitGuru we thought it would be an ideal opportunity to look at some potential cooling solutions for the new socket TR4 CPUs.

Cooler Master and AMD exclusively collaborated during the design of the Wraith Ripper, so it’s labelled as the official cooler for 2nd generation Threadripper. With a rating of up to 250W TDP, it should be capable of keeping the HEDT Threadripper temperatures under control.

A 44.6mm x 76.4mm heat transfer plate has been implemented into the Wraith Ripper, so unlike some of the AIO solutions adapted for Threadripper, the Wraith Ripper covers the whole IHS which should aid thermal dissipation of the 32 core 64 thread 2990WX monster.

Wraith Ripper is a dual tower design with a large cooling fin surface area. Cooler Master say the black coating enhances radiation cooling performance. A seven heat pipe array is spread out symmetrically, which should spread heat uniformly over the heatsink.

A plastic shroud, which Cooler Master have named Wraith Armour, is designed to guide the flow of air for peak cooling performance and reduce dead heat spots on the cooler. The Armour is also illuminated by a number of addressable RGB LEDs for full colour customisation.

Measuring a huge 150mm long, 132mm wide and 160mm high, the Wraith Ripper takes up a large chunk of space, so a large ATX case will be required to house it.

At around £100 in the UK the Wraith Ripper is rather expensive for an air cooing solution. With other high end coolers such as the NH-D15 from Noctua coming in at under £80, owners of Threadripper will be paying an extra premium to ensure their CPU temperatures are under control.

As the ‘TR4' part of the name suggests, the be quiet! Dark Rock Pro TR4 has been designed to work with Threadripper CPUs, something that wasn't supported with the Dark Rock Pro 4. From the outset, the Dark Rock Pro TR4 shares a very similar aesthetic to the Dark Rock Pro 4 which we reviewed previously, and also shares a very similar price at £79.99. Looking at both models side by side, it’s pretty easy to confuse them, but the biggest giveaway that one is TR4 socket-specific Is, of course, the massive CPU block.

We were very impressed by the Dark Rock Pro 4's cooling performance and low audible noise, but as the TR4 version shares an almost identical spec list it will be interesting to see how it compares in our testing.

Specification:

 • Model: Dark Rock Pro TR4
 • Heat Sink Material: Aluminum
 • Included Fans: 1x Silent Wings 3 120mm PWM, 1x Silent Wings 135mm PWM
 • Fan Dimensions: 120 x 120 x 25mm, 135 x 135 x 22mm
 • Fan Speed: 1,500 , 1,200 RPM @100% PWM
 • Fan Noise Level: 24.3 dBa @100%
 • Fan Connector: 4-Pin (PWM)
 • Warranty: 3 years
 • AMD socket compatibility: AMD TR4
 • Heat Sink Weight: 1.18kg
 • Heat Sink Dimensions (LxWxH) : 145.7 x 136 x 162.8 mm

Over the last week or so, various CPU cooler makers have been announcing support for AMD’s upcoming Ryzen Threadripper and Socket TR4. Rather than having a separate announcement for every CPU cooler maker though, AMD has made things easy for us by creating a running tally of liquid cooling solutions compatible with its new socket. Right now, there are around 20 different coolers with confirmed support, including models from Corsair, Fractal Design, Cooler Master and more.

Here is the current list of coolers with Socket TR4 (Threadripper) support:

 • Arctic- Freezer 33, Liquid Freezer 240 & 360.
 • Cooler Master- Hyper 212 TR Edition, MasterLiquid 240.
 • Corsair- H80i v2, H105, H100i v2, H115i.
 • Cryorig- A40, A40 Ultimate, A80.
 • EVGA- CLC 280.
 • Fractal Design- Celsius S24, Celsius S36,
 • NZXT- Kraken X52, X61 & X62.
 • Thermaltake- Water 3.0 Riing RGB 360, 280 & 240. Water 3.0 Ultimate and Water 3.0 Extreme.

The list isn’t necessarily all encompassing, there could be some compatible coolers not yet on the list. However, this is a good start. It is also worth noting that several cooler makers are working on releasing revisions with Socket TR4 brackets included.

Still, if you are planning a Ryzen Threadripper build and want to ensure you pick up a compatible cooler, AMD will be updating its list over time, so it may be worth bookmarking and checking when you are ready to buy.

KitGuru Says: Every Threadripper CPU ships with an Asetek cooling bracket anyway, which will go a long way towards ensuring compatibility with a wide range of coolers. Still though, it would be a good idea to double check everything is going to fit properly before making a purchase. Are many of you looking to put together a Ryzen Threadripper PC this year?
