Everyone has their own favourite Sonic the Hedgehog game. For some, it's the classic 2D titles. For others, it may be Sonic Adventure, Unleashed, or even one of the more modern releases. Arguably one of the best entries in the long running series is 2003’s Sonic Heroes. Initially released for the GameCube and PS2, the 20 year old title is seemingly set to get a remake.

As reported by known insiders ‘Necro Felipe Lima’ and ‘Midori’, a Sonic heroes remake is currently in development. Said to be using Unreal Engine for the project, the game is targeting current-gen systems only – meaning PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and the upcoming Nintendo Switch successor.

While no concrete launch window was provided, the leakers did suggest that a 2025 release is likely, assuming development goes smoothly of course.

Sonic Heroes has so much more to offer than just its iconic theme song and so hopefully this remake (the first of its kind for Sonic) manages to be both a critical and commercial success.

KitGuru says: What do you think of Sonic Heroes? Are you surprised to see them using Unreal Engine instead of the Hedgehog Engine? What is your favourite Sonic Game? Let us know down below.

Earlier this month, we reported on a rumour claiming that SEGA are preparing to launch a Sonic the Hedgehog themed Fall Guys-like experience for mobile devices. The leaker has since returned with even more claims, revealing that the publisher is in fact working on 3 separate Sonic games for the platform.

Following on from the leak earlier this month claiming that “this year, a new Sonic spin-off title will be released for mobile [whose] gameplay elements will be similar to Fall Guys.” notable SEGA/ATLUS leaker ‘MbKKssTBhz5’ returned with even more Sonic news, taking to Twitter to say:

“A Sonic Chao game and new Sonic sports title are both currently in development for mobile devices,” adding that “the Sonic Chao title will be exclusive to Netflix. The Sonic sports title will be on Apple Arcade.”

As mentioned previously, the Fall Guys-like title will not be limited to any service, and will instead be made available directly through the Apple App Store and Google Play Store “at the beginning of summer.”

Sonic has always had a notable presence on mobile, with a number of the Blue Blur’s free-to-play efforts surpassing 100 million downloads on Android alone. Hopefully these upcoming titles offer quality experiences.

Following a solid 10 years of less-than-stellar Sonic releases, the Blue Blur has had somewhat of a resurgence as of late – with the likes of Sonic Frontiers reinventing the series and the live action Sonic films releasing to great success. SEGA looks set to keep the momentum going with a Fall Guys-like Sonic the Hedgehog spin-off.

As reported by a notable SEGA/ATLUS leaker, “This year, a new Sonic spin-off title will be released for mobile. The gameplay elements will be similar to Fall Guys.”

Sonic has had quite a few games released onto mobile platforms over the years. That said, recently we have seen SEGA putting a greater emphasis on bringing high quality games to the platform with the recently-released Sonic dream Team for Apple Arcade.

Unlike Dream Team, this upcoming game will reportedly be coming to both iOS and Android, meaning it should not be limited to any particular subscription service.

SEGA making a Fall Guys Sonic game is interesting, as the Blue Blur is already playable in the actual Fall Guys – well, a Sonic costume is anyways. As with many of SEGA’s mobile efforts, this could wind up being massive for the company, or it could fall completely under the radar. We will have to wait and see.

Back in the early 90s Sonic and Mario competed at a level which we have not seen since, with the Blue Blur managing to amass just as much societal awareness as Nintendo’s mascot Italian plumber. Unfortunately, in the decades since, Sonic’s relevance has fallen to the wayside somewhat – especially compared to the juggernaut that is Mario. According to SEGA, the publisher hopes to one day surpass Mario “because we respect Mario.”

From the publisher’s Japanese recruitment page, SEGA published an interview with Division 2 – the department in charge of Sonic the Hedgehog. Speaking to General Manager Osamu Ohashi, the developer responded to the question “How will you develop Sonic in the future?” in a rather bold and ambitious manner, saying (as translated by ResetEra user ‘Dooble’):

“Simply put, I want to surpass Mario. Sonic is a game that was originally developed to compete with Mario, and it still hasn't achieved that goal. Our goal is to catch up and surpass Mario because we respect Mario.”

Ohashi continued, “I want people to play it all over the world, including Japan, like Mario, and I want the movie to be a bigger hit than Mario. I would like USJ [Universal Studios Japan] to create a ‘Sonic Area’ as well. That's our goal for those of us who love Sonic.”

In the past few years we have seen Sonic the Hedgehog come back in a rather massive way, releasing multiple successful films; a new TV show; original 2D and 3D Sonic games as well as the recently-announced Apple Arcade exclusive Sonic Dream Team.

While it will take a great deal more than that to overtake Super Mario, Sonic does appear to have found his mojo once again – and so now is perhaps the best time for SEGA to attempt such an ambitious goal. Best of luck to them.

Following many years of less-than-stellar releases, Sonic the Hedgehog seems to have had a resurgence of sorts – with the likes of Sonic Frontiers, Sonic Superstars and the two theatrical releases putting the Blue Blur back on the map. SEGA seems to have more big plans for Sonic, as detailed in a leaked presentation from SEGA of America themselves.

As first shared by Reddit user ‘Vilkam’, a document claiming to be a presentation from SEGA of America highlights many of the publisher’s future plans for the company’s mascot Sonic the Hedgehog.

According to the leak, Sonic’s next mainline entry following 2022’s Sonic Frontiers is planned to release some time during Holiday 2024 – with a prologue of sorts arriving in the months prior to the full games’ release.

That is not all however, as the Blue Blur will also make an appearance on mobile devices in 2024, with a new game said to be releasing on the platform next year. Even during Sonic’s worst years, the hedgehog has found a great deal of success on mobile – with the likes of Sonic Dash and Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom both surpassing 100 million downloads on Android alone.

Finally, the leaked presentation claimed that the recently-released 2D platformer ‘Sonic Superstars’ will get some form of DLC at an unspecified time in the future. DLC has become a common practice for many Sonic titles, and so this does not come as a massive surprise.

Still, for fans of Sonic the Hedgehog, it seems as though SEGA has found a comfortable rhythm and cadence with which to release new titles. It will be interesting to see what the Holiday 2024 title looks like.

Sonic Frontiers has had some impressive updates since its launch in late 2022, adding in new challenge modes, additional features and new story content. The final free update has landed this week, adding in more playable characters and new missions to complete.

If you install this week's Sonic Frontiers update, you'll find a bunch of new content when you boot up the game. For starters, characters like Tails, Knuckles and Amy are now playable, so you can swap Sonic out for one of his pals, each with their own unique abilities.

This update also introduces new story content set after the events of the main game. You'll need to have finished the main campaign first and once that's done, a new portal will appear on Ouranos Island. Go through the portal and take on the extra challenges that await you on the other side.

While the extra story here is nice, the headliner is really the extra playable characters, as Tails, Knuckles and Amy have not been playable in a 3D sonic game since the release of Sonic the Hedgehog in 2006.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the official Sonic the Hedgehog page said “Surprise! Sonic Central returns this Friday on Sonic's birthday!” adding that fans should “Tune in for a sneak peek of some of our upcoming projects, partnerships and events happening in 2023.”

The Sonic Central showcase will take place tomorrow – the 23rd of June – at 8am PST (4pm UK Time), and while we don’t have any concrete details on what to expect, there are a lot of Sonic-related things happening at the moment.

That said, we will likely get new information on Sonic Frontiers’ 2nd major update (titled ‘Sonic’s Birthday’), alongside more footage of Sonic Superstars, and perhaps a trailer for the Knuckles spin-off show. We don’t have long to wait in order to find out.

Sonic the Hedgehog has had a tumultuous life, with the Blue Blur going back and forth between quality and…not so quality titles. That said, in the past few years SEGA seems to have gotten its groove back, with the latest Sonic title being a surprise 2.5D co-op experience.

Making the announcement during Summer Game Fest’s Kick Off (and expanded upon via a press release), SEGA officially unveiled Sonic Superstars: “an all-new Sonic the Hedgehog game bringing a new standard of play to classic high-speed 2D Sonic platforming” adding that “In Sonic Superstars, Sonic and his friends’ journey starts on the beautiful North Star Islands, a mystical place offering never-before-seen environments, as well as a mysterious story waiting to unfold.”

Looking like a mix of new and familiar, this side-scrolling platformer includes 4 playable characters: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy – each of which also have their own unique abilities.

The trailer showed off many creative ideas including pseudo-3D elements in the form of wall running and waterfall climbing as well as art-style changes depending on the scenario (with them teasing a Pac-Man inspired voxel-looking area).

There have been rumours that a new 2D Sonic was on its way, though many expected to see a sequel to Mania. While that very much could still be the case, it is exciting to see SEGA trying something a bit new with Sonic – while hopefully keeping all of the franchise’s core gameplay identities. Sonic Superstars launches later “this Fall” for $60.

Sonic the Hedgehog has had a tumultuous life. Following the past decade or so of mediocrity, the Blue Blur has had somewhat of a resurgence thanks to the likes of the Sonic films, the Netflix original Sonic Prime and of course, the success of the latest mainline video game entry: Sonic Frontiers. Taking advantage of the series’ current hotness, SEGA has announced a Sonic Symphony World Tour.

Making the announcement via a press release, SEGA said “The music of Sonic the Hedgehog continues! Following the standalone Sonic the Hedgehog 30th Anniversary Symphony and Brazil Game Show 2022 performances, today SEGA announced the Sonic Symphony World Tour will kick off this fall into 2024, bringing a medley of fan-favourite Sonic tracks to multiple cities.”

Taking place this September, the tour dates released so far is as follows:

  • September 16, 2023 – London, UK at Barbican Hall
  • September 30, 2023 – Los Angeles, CA at Dolby Theatre

For those interested in the performances, pre-sale tickets will go live this Thursday on the 25th of May at 10am local time, with public sales following the next day on Friday the 26th.

As mentioned, the Sonic the Hedgehog series has been rather inconsistent in the past, with gameplay, story and more all suffering from title to title. That said, one aspect of the series which has received constant praise is its music, and so for Sonic fans this symphony will be representing the best of the franchise regardless of which OST’s make an appearance. Hopefully more franchises in the future offer similarly exciting world tour performances.

Back in February of last year we reported that a Knuckles the Echidna spin-off TV show was in the works at Paramount+ following the success of the second Sonic the Hedgehog film – which of course introduced Knuckles to the film franchise. One year on from its initial announcement we now have official details on the show – including the fact that the film’s director will return for the TV show.

As reported by Variety, the Knuckles spin-off show is set between the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (currently planned to hit cinemas in December 2024) and sees Knuckles “[agreeing] to train Wade as his protégé and teach him the ways of the Echidna warrior”. Unsurprisingly, both Idris Elba and Adam Pally will reprise their roles as Knuckles and Wade whippie respectively for the show.

Making the show feel in alignment with the films, Sonic 1 and 2’s director Jeff Fowler is serving as an executive producer for the series and will even direct the pilot episode. More of the film’s creative crew are also returning for the show, with Neal H. Moritz; Toby Ascher; Toru Nakahara and Elba himself all serving as executive producers.

Both Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2 were fun films with near-universal appeal, and so it is exciting to see this iteration of the Blue Blur (and his friends) expanding into more mediums. Hopefully the show ends up being just as good as the films. We will have to wait and see.

Sonic the Hedgehog is known for many things. Perhaps even more popular than the franchise itself however are the memes that have spawned from it. SEGA took this in stride as they released ‘The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog’ on the 1st of April. Surprisingly – or perhaps unsurprisingly – the game is a big hit, surpassing 1 million players in just a few days.

As reported by the Social Media Manager for Sonic the Hedgehog on Twitter, ‘Katie MiniKitty’ (who pitched the concept for The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog) took to the platform to say “Over 1,000,000 of you have grabbed The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog and it's currently the #61 highest rated game on Steam of ALL TIME. Absolutely unreal. Thank you all so, so much.”

For the uninitiated, The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog is a free visual novel / platforming murder mystery in which “It's Amy Rose's birthday, and she's hosting a murder mystery party on the Mirage Express! When Sonic the Hedgehog becomes the game's victim, everyone is off to get to the bottom of things. However, something feels a bit off – is this really an innocent game or is something more sinister afoot?”

In recent years we have seen many game developers and publishers have fun with April Fool’s day, leading to the joke announcement of many fake and wacky games. It is exciting however to see that SEGA went all-in and not only created a trailer for the game – but that it is an actual game which anyone can play for free. Hopefully more publishers take this approach with April Fool’s in the future.

Following many years of less-than-stellar video game releases, Sonic Team seem to have knocked it out of the park with Sonic Frontiers. Released back in November 2022, the open-zone platformer has already managed to become one of the franchises better-selling titles, having officially surpassed 3 million copies in just 4 months.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the official Japanese Sonic account revealed that just 4 months after its 8th of November 2022 launch, Sonic Frontiers has officially surpassed 3 million copies sold.

While this in no way makes Frontiers the best-performing game in the franchise, SEGA has in recent years failed to offer any sales statistics on the likes of 2017’s Sonic Forces – or when they have (such as with Sonic Lost World) – the numbers have not been great.

To see SEGA celebrating Sonic’s sales success after so many duds is a welcome change, and with Frontiers recently getting its first wave of free DLC, the title is likely to continue performing admirably.

Of course, it is worth noting that a majority of these 3 million copies sold occurred during the game’s first month – but this is typically the case with many games. As mentioned, the first of 3 waves of free DLC has now been released, meaning that over the course of the year and, with each new content drop, expect more people to flock to the game. It will be highly interesting to see how many copies the game sells when all is said and done.

Following a lengthy development period, Sonic Frontiers finally released late last year to a positive response both from the mainstream critics, but especially from hardcore Sonic fans. That said, the game is not perfect and so the game’s director has already laid out some of the many changes being considered for their next title following fan feedback.

Though not concrete, we already know quite a bit about what to expect next from Sonic – and it all seems to be positive.

As translated and collated by TailsChannel on Tumblr, according to Kishimoto, following Frontiers’ focus on Sonic exclusively, the next big step for this new generation of games is to bring more playable characters into the mix. This is already set to happen with Frontiers via a future free update, but it being more closely tied into the story will be exciting to see.

Speaking of story, Kishimoto claimed that Frontiers’ story was not told in the best way possible, and so the plan for future installments is to “pay even more attention to the script and story even more, and go deeper into the characters.”

The combat in Frontiers was rather simplistic and so it is exciting to hear that combat is another aspect the team plans to work on for the next title. Perhaps the most relieving piece of information released however is the fact that following fan feedback, Kishimoto and the team plan to put much less emphasis on revisiting older zones, instead focusing on more original levels.

The full list of takeaways can be found HERE, but it is safe to say that if these changes are all implemented into the next game, then Sonic Frontiers 2 (or whatever it ends up being) has so much potential.

As part of SEGA's recently released financial reports, the company listed the sales data for its biggest franchises, revealing that the company’s mascot – Sonic the Hedgehog – has in total across its paid and free games been played by over 1.5 Billion people.

Sonic the Hedgehog has been the face of SEGA ever since the mascot first landed on the gaming scene back in 1991. That being said, it is interesting to see just how much bigger the blue blur is when compared to other SEGA franchises. When accounting for both units sold and free to play downloads, SEGA’s top 10 best-selling franchises is as follows:

  1. Sonic: 1.51bn
  2. Total War: 40.4m
  3. Puyo Puyo: 37.7m
  4. Football Manager: 25m
  5. Yakuza: 19.8m
  6. Virtua Fighter: 18.8m
  7. Shin Megami Tensei: 19m
  8. Hatsune Miku: 18.5m
  9. Persona: 15.5m
  10. Phantasy Star: 9.8m

While it is safe to assume that a large portion of the 1.5 Billion players can be attributed to Sonic’s many free-to-play mobile titles released over the decades, the first Sonic the Hedgehog game alone sold over 44 million units across its release platforms. Recent Sonic games haven’t sold nearly as well, but considering the buzz surrounding Sonic Frontiers, it will be interesting to see just how many copies the upcoming game manages to shift.

As we inch closer and closer to the release of Sonic Frontiers, SEGA has upped its marketing for the game. One interesting method that the publisher has taken is to offer a free in-game item to those who subscribe to SEGA’s email newsletter. Curiously, the item in question is none other than the Blue Blur’s iconic Soap Shoes.

Making the announcement on the Sonic Frontiers website, SEGA said “Sign up January 31, 2023 and take it back to the early 2000s to rail grind in style with your own pair of iconic shoes from Sonic Adventure 2, exclusively available to our newsletter subscribers!”

They continued, “Simply enter your details and we'll email a code straight to your inbox after Sonic Frontiers has been released on November 8, 2022. We’ll send more details about how to redeem your code to download the in-game content at a later date.”

As mentioned, the Soap Shoes are an iconic part of Sonic’s early 3D history. Based on a real shoe, the soap shoes are purpose built for rail-grinding – something which has now become a staple in 3D Sonic games.

That being said, Sonic’s soap shoes have made very few appearances since its initial unveiling, and so for it to be in Sonic Frontiers is exciting – especially for old-school fans of the hedgehog. Hopefully there is another way to unlock the shoes in-game.

KitGuru says: What do you think of the shoes? Would you wear them? What other pieces of customisation do you want to see in Sonic Frontiers? Let us know down below.

3D Sonic the Hedgehog titles have been consistent in their inconsistencies when it comes to the way Sonic feels to control. With the upcoming Sonic Frontiers however, it seems as though SEGA will be allowing fans to customise the way sonic feels exactly to their liking, making the blue blur feel more like he did in previous titles if you so desire.

Twitter user ‘StartZ_HHK’ managed to get their hands on the Sonic Frontiers demo at Gamescom, taking a short video and giving us our first look at the settings menu (at least in its current iteration).

Unlike previous titles, Sonic Frontiers’ settings menu is comprehensive and impressive, especially when it comes to the way you can alter how Sonic feels. Whether for accessibility purposes, or just for personal preference, you will be able to tweak nearly every aspect to Sonic’s controls, with the menu including sliders for:

  • Starting Speed
  • Initial Boost Speed
  • Turning Speed
  • Boost Turning Speed
  • Top Speed
  • Steering Sensitivity
  • Acceleration
  • Bounce Height
  • Camera Speed
  • Camera Distance
  • Camera Angle

As mentioned, while this will be excellent for accessibility, it will also make Sonic Frontiers infinitely more replayable due to the sheer number of tweaks, while also allowing you to replicate the various different game-feels of previous Sonic titles.

We will have to wait and see what the full and final settings menu offers when the game launches on the 8th of November, but so far Sonic Frontiers is looking quite promising.

The game is set to turn up once again at Gamescom Opening Night Live next week, but the game's release date appears to have leaked early.

According to a Taiwanese retail site (via Reddit), Sonic Frontiers is releasing on the 15th of November. The listing also claimed that Sonic Frontiers will be getting DLC later down the line too.

Art shown on the page confirms that a few of Sonic's friends will be joining him on this adventure – Tails, Knuckles and Amy. This all follows on from fan reports that a new Sonic Frontiers trailer has been shown in Japanese movie theatres recently.

Sega will be making new official announcements and debuting a new trailer for Sonic Frontiers during Gamescom: Opening Night Live on the 23rd of August.

The tale of Sonic Origins is a tragic one. The collection of classic Sonic titles remade for modern systems should have been an easy win for the Blue Blur. Unfortunately, the collection launched with a plethora of problems – problems which are now actively being worked on.

Sonic Origins took Sonic the Hedgehog 1. 2, CD, 3 and Knuckles and remastered/remade them for modern systems (adding widescreen support, new moves, sprites and more) while also connecting all 4 games together through a story mode. Unfortunately, due to SEGA not giving the team at Headcannon enough time and resources, the game launched with a wide number of bugs previously not seen within these classic titles.

While it is unfortunate to see the game’s quality being undone by such issues, the Sonic Origins Team is currently working to fix all the problems which players encountered, with Sonic’s Social Media Manager Katie Chrzanowski taking to Twitter to say:

“Hey! Thanks for the patience! The team's been listening and is working on fixing a variety of issues right now. We'll make sure to get some more official messaging out once we have more info for everyone.”

In the immediate wake of Sonic Origins’ release, and the realisation that the games suffered from these issues, one of the studio’s leads ‘Stealth’ claimed that “we asked to do major fixes near submission but weren't allowed due to submission and approval rules. We asked about delays early and repeatedly but were told they weren't possible. We offered to come back for post-release fixes and updates- we do not yet know if this is happening.”

Fortunately, we now know that the team has indeed received approval to fix many of these issues. While we do not know how long it will take, it is good to see that eventually Sonic Origins will become the definitive way to play these games – it just might take some time.

Sonic Origins recently released, offering a brand new way to play the Classic Sonic Quadrilogy. Despite the many improvements brought about by this latest remaster, a number of bugs, glitches and other issues have popped up. According to one of Origins’ developers, the blame lies primarily with SEGA.

Sonic Origins brings together Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2, CD, as well as 3 & Knuckles in one remastered package. In fact, this is the first time that Sonic 3 & Knuckles has been given the widescreen treatment. Even beyond this, Sonic Origins represents the first time that any of these titles are playable in widescreen on console, with previous remastered ports only coming to mobile devices.

It is therefore exciting to see these games playable in a brand new way for a new generation of Sonic fans, Unfortunately, all is not perfect. In a long series of Tweets by ‘Stealth’ –  one half of the dynamic duo known for making the original Sonic remasters (as well as Sonic Mania) – the game developer discussed the many frustrations and issues felt when making Sonic origins, saying:

“I won't lie and say that there weren't issues in what we gave to Sega, but what is in Origins is also not what we turned in. Integration introduced some wild bugs that conventional logic would have one believe were our responsibility- a lot of them aren't.”

They continued, “I'm extremely proud of my team for their performance under such pressure, but every one of us is very unhappy about the state of Origins and even the Sonic 3 component. We weren't too thrilled about its pre-submission state either but a lot was beyond our control.”

It seems there was some level of strain between the two companies, with Stealth saying “We asked to do major fixes near submission but weren't allowed due to submission and approval rules. We asked about delays early and repeatedly but were told they weren't possible. We offered to come back for post-release fixes and updates- we do not yet know if this is happening.”

The full Tweet thread can be found HERE and HERE, and goes into much greater depth regarding the issues found within Sonic Origins. It is unfortunate to see another Sonic release plagued by controversy. Hopefully SEGA gives the team at Headcannon time to fix the game post-launch.

Sonic Frontiers is an upcoming ‘open-zone’ Sonic the Hedgehog game which looks unlike any other released by SEGA over the course of the Blue Blur’s 30 year history. Ahead of the upcoming onslaught of announcements expected in June, SEGA has shown off the first gameplay for Sonic Frontiers.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the official Sonic the Hedgehog account said “Enjoy this small preview of Sonic Frontiers, and tune in all June long for the @IGN First cover story for more world-exclusive reveals!”

With that, the team at SEGA gave fans their first look at actual gameplay for Sonic Frontiers – and it looks good! Though only 30 seconds in length, there was plenty shown off, including the fact that Sonic’s moveset has been altered slightly. While it seems that he is still able to use the boost mechanic, the open world nature of the game means that players will have a lot more control over Sonic throughout – and this can be seen in the footage shown.

Additionally, Sonic retains his now iconic homing attack – though as with the boost, it looks somewhat different in its implementation. A few other notable details includes the fact that combat has seemingly been expanded, looking not dissimilar to the way enemies were dispatched in 2004’s Sonic Heroes, though with seemingly a more tactical approach.

Last but not least, some of the enemy designs share similar motifs to that of Eggman’s army from the Sonic the Hedgehog film. What this means is unknown, though with “everything from world-exclusive gameplay reveals to the first ever hands-on impressions, to interviews with the game's creators and more,” happening in June, this upcoming month looks to be a big one for Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sega officially announced Sonic Origins earlier this month, a new collection of remasters, covering everything from the original Sonic the Hedgehog to Sonic CD. The game has already caused some controversy due to day-one DLC plans and pre-order bonuses. Now adding on to that, Sega has announced plans to delist older Sonic titles so that new buyers have to pick up the new remasters.

Sega announced this week that it plans to delist Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2 and 3, as well as Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic CD, from all digital store fronts, including Xbox, PlayStation and various PC marketplaces. The only platform that won't be impacted is the Nintendo Switch, where Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2 will remain available as part of Sega Ages and through Nintendo Switch Online.

The original Sonic games will all be delisted on the 20th of May, so you still have some time to pick them up if you'd rather keep the original games and not move on to the new Sonic Origins remaster.

Sonic Origins will be launching on the 23rd of June for PC, as well as current and last-gen consoles. Each game will have a brand new opening and ending animation, and new graphics and gameplay modes to choose from. However, some content will be locked behind DLC – even buying the most expensive edition of the game does not include every DLC pack, so the situation is a bit of a minefield to navigate.

Yesterday we reported that a high-level update regarding Sonic Origins appeared to be imminent. This was indeed the case, as SEGA has now announced that the classic collection will be available this June.

After much speculation on exactly what Sonic Origins will be, SEGA has now dropped a ton of information on the game. Sonic Origins is launching on the 23rd of June 2022 as a digital-only release.

Costing just over £30, the game will let you “Relive the classic collected adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD in the newly remastered Sonic Origins.”

Celebrating the franchise’s 30th anniversary, all 4 titles have been upgraded to a higher resolution with widescreen support, as well as “all-new opening and ending animations for each title!” Additionally, the game will feature a museum where players will be able to unlock new content, challenges, and Special Stages.

Lastly, all titles in the Sonic Origins collection will be playable in Classic and Anniversary modes, where you will be able to “choose to Spin Dash your way through the numerous zones in Classic mode with the game's original resolution and limited lives, or the new Anniversary mode with unlimited lives and revamped fullscreen resolution.”

The classic Sonic titles have been ported to a plethora of different devices to varying degrees of success. Currently, the mobile ports of Sonic 1,2 and CD are the best way to play these games, though it looks like Sonic Origins may be setting a new standard.

As part of Sonic the Hedgehog’s 30th anniversary celebrations, publisher SEGA announced Sonic Origins – a collection of classic 2D Sonic titles remastered for modern systems. Said to be coming in 2022, new developmental milestones suggest an imminent release.

As discovered by ResetEra user Neoxon, the Korean Ratings Board recently rated Sonic Origins, indicating that the game is in a mostly complete and playable state. Further fuel was added to this fire when the cover art for Sonic Origins leaked on the PlayStation Network servers.

The cover art itself is vibrant, attractive and closely follows the art style of the classic games for a nice hit of nostalgia. Few details have been shared regarding the specificities of Sonic Origins, but we do know that the collection will include Sonic 1 and 2, Sonic CD as well as Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

In terms of enhancements it’s been confirmed that all games will offer widescreen suppor; other than that however, little is known. Previous SEGA collections have come with an impressive amount of additional content and features, from save states to filters to even fully explorable 3D hubs. Hopefully Sonic Origins proves to be the definitive way to play these classic titles.

2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog film surpassed many expectations, offering a fun and lighthearted family film while packing in enough references and easter eggs to excite even the most hardcore fans. The film was a commercial hit, spawning a sequel. Having concluded its first weekend in cinemas, Sonic 2 is already breaking records, achieving the biggest launch of any video game film in history.

As reported by Box Office Mojo, Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s 3-day domestic box office haul landed at an impressive $71 million. This has catapulted Sonic 2 to the top of the biggest launch charts, surpassing all other films based on video games. Interestingly, prior to Sonic 2 the biggest launch was in fact the first film with $58 million (with 3rd place going to Detective Pikachu at $54.4 million).

Detective Pikachu ultimately went on to gross over $430 million worldwide. Sonic 1 meanwhile ‘only’ managed $319 million – though this was right as COVID-19 hit, and as such all film sales were down. Despite this, Sonic 1 was the 6th highest grossing film of the year worldwide, with the top spot making $461 million.

After just 3 days, Sonic 2 has managed to garner a worldwide box office gross of $141 million – already establishing it as a commercial success. With how great these early figures are, it will be interesting to see whether Sonic 2 will be able to take Warcraft’s crown as the highest grossing video game film. Time will tell.

Alongside these reviews, as reported by VGC Toby Ascher, one of the producers for both the first and second Sonic films revealed the studio’s future plans for Sonic and his friends, saying:

“We're creating a Sonic cinematic universe, so we knew we were going to add characters, like Tails and Knuckles; new to the films but beloved by gamers all over the world.”

The notion of a cinematic universe was popularised by the Marvel Cinematic Universe and had led to many other companies taking their respective IPs in a similar direction…to mixed results.

What Ascher means exactly when using the world ‘cinematic universe’ is unknown, but with both Tails and Knuckles being added into the upcoming sequel, the potential for solo films, spin-offs and more is certainly there (something we are already seeing with a Knuckles TV show). It will be interesting to see how the public responds to Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Sonic is no stranger to the world of LEGO. First found in the 2015 game LEGO Dimensions, it seems the blue blur is once again being transformed into a LEGO character as a Sonic the Hedgehog LEGO set has now been officially announced.

Originally leaked last week, LEGO and SEGA have now officially announced a Sonic the Hedgehog LEGO set. Costing £60, the 1125 piece set depicts the classic Sonic the Hedgehog Green Hill Zone, including its iconic palm trees; checkered pattern; a bridge loop; Badniks and even a “lever-activated spring for big jumps”.

When assembled, the set stands at 17cm high, 36cm wide and 6cm deep. The designer, Viv Grannell spoke on the set, saying “I’ve loved the Sonic series since I was a kid – his vibrant, colourful world is always a fantastic place to explore.”

2021 marks the 30 anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog, and so as with the many different games, products and more released over the course of the year in celebration, this LEGO set is a great way to appreciate the past 30 years of one of gaming’s most iconic faces.

The LEGO set will be available for sale starting on the 1st of January 2022 – kicking off a new year of Sonic in a fun and exciting way. Hopefully more video game-related LEGO sets are on their way.

Kitguru says: What do you think of the LEGO set? Will you be buying it? What franchise do you want to see get a LEGO collab? Let us know down below.

Anyone who has been a fan of Sonic the Hedgehog during the past 20 years is likely to have heard of the band Crush 40. The Japanese-American hard rock duo have composed songs for many Sonic the Hedgehog games, including Sonic Adventure, Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, and many more. As the sequel to 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog movie inches closer to release, Crush 40's involvement has now been teased.

Johnny Gioeli, the lead singer for Crush 40, recently took to Twitter to say “Is it rumor or is it fact that Crush 40 will be part of the new Sonic movie?? Stay tuned…”

2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog movie served as a love letter to the franchise’s fans, referencing Sonic’s entire history in many different ways. It seems the sequel is looking to double down on this element, and bringing Crush 40 into the fray will only further excite fans of Sonic’s 3D outings.

Crush 40 have composed songs for almost a dozen Sonic games, namely Sonic Adventure; Sonic Adventure 2; Sonic Heroes; Shadow the Hedgehog; Sonic the Hedgehog (2006); Sonic and the Black Knight; Sonic Free Riders; Sonic Generations and Team Sonic Racing, meaning that regardless of which Sonic games you have played, you are likely to have heard at least a few of their iconic songs.

It will be interesting to see what role Crush 40 play in the movie, whether it will be a small cameo, or if they will compose all of its music – hopefully it’s the latter.

While the film’s initial reveal was rife with controversy, the final release of the Sonic the Hedgehog film in 2020 was met with a surprising amount of enthusiasm from both dedicated fans and casual observers. Ahead of its sequel's release next year, it has now been revealed that Sonic's friend ‘Knuckles' will be voiced by Idris Elba.

Making the announcement on Twitter, English film star Idris Elba (known for his roles in Luther, Fast and Furious, The Suicide Squad and more) revealed that not only would Knuckles be making his debut in the upcoming sequel to the Sonic the Hedgehog film, but that Elba himself is voicing the character.

While leaked set photos revealed that Knuckles would be making an appearance in the film, Elba’s announcement serves as official confirmation. Previous rumours suggested that Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson could be cast as Knuckles, and so it is interesting to see the role go to Idris Elba instead.

While we have yet to get an official trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the first film teased the appearance of Miles ‘Tails’ Prower – with Knuckles now completing the Team Sonic trio.

Sonic the Hedgehog was a surprise hit when it released in early 2020, bringing in just under $320 million and cementing the film as the beginning of a franchise. It will be interesting to see just how well the upcoming sequel performs when it releases in April 2022.

Despite being one of the most recognisable video game properties around, the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has been relatively silent – at least in the video game space. With 2021 being the blue blur’s 30th anniversary, SEGA has confirmed that a dedicated showcase is happening later today. Ahead of this however, it was revealed that Roger Craig Smith – who previously announced that he would no longer be voicing the iconic character – is returning as Sonic.

Making the announcement on Twitter, Roger Craig Smith said “I can't fully express my gratitude for the @sonic_hedgehog crew and community. I hope to honor your support and passion as I'm officially back voicing #SonicTheHedgehog in games. Can't wait for ya to see what we have planned! THANK YOU…from the bottom of my blue heart.”

Back in January, Smith – who had been voicing Sonic the Hedgehog for 10 years – announced that he would be stepping down from the role, saying “Welp, 10 years was an amazing run. Onwards to new zones! Much love to the fans who’ve been so kind. It’s been an honor.”

Following this, it was confirmed that many of the other main voice cast would be changed – save for Dr.Eggman (voiced by Mike Pollock). What has transpired between January and now is unknown, though it will be interesting to see what has been planned for the Sonic the Hedgehog anniversary event later today at 5pm BST – and whether any other members of the voice cast will return.

2021 marks the 30th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog. SEGA’s mascot may have had its ups and downs over the decades, but the franchise remains as one of gaming’s most recognisable. After a great deal of silence, the publisher has finally announced a Sonic the Hedgehog showcase, which is set to go live tomorrow.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the official Sonic the Hedgehog account said “Did someone say news? Tune in at 9am PT [5pm UK time] on 5/27 for a first look at some of the projects, partnerships, and events for our #Sonic30th celebration!”

Though little is currently known regarding what exactly will be shown off, previous leaks have hinted to a number of possible announcements. Leaks have suggested that a Sonic Colours remaster is on its way – as is a ‘Sonic the Hedgehog Collection’. These two aside, it has been almost 4 years since the release of Sonic Forces, signaling that the next mainline Sonic title may be on the horizon.

Finally, outside of games, there are a number of already announced Sonic projects, including the sequel to 2020’s live-action Sonic the Hedgehog film, and Sonic Prime – an animated Sonic show made in partnership with Netflix. Whatever ends up being announced, fortunately fans don’t have too much longer to wait.
