Last year, then Sony Ericsson and now Sony, confirmed that all 2011 Xperia smartphones will be getting an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. This vital piece of information has yet to change but the update schedule for different devices has been changed up a bit.

Sony's Xperia Ray will be getting its Android 4.0 update in April alongside the Xperia Arc S and the Xperia Neo V

Sometime in the middle of April the Xperia Arc S, Xperia Neo V and Xperia Ray will get their Android 4.0 update. Then just under two months later in late May or early June the remaining 2011 Xperia range including the Xperia Arc, Play, Neo, Mini, Mini Pro, Pro, Active, and the Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman will be getting their own update.

As usual all the updates are subject to carrier certification but if you have the global, non-carrier bound version you can expect your update as soon as it starts to roll out.

Strangely, none of the updates will be available OTA and will require you to plug your phone into your computer. This is because Sony wants you to make a “conscious and informed decision to upgrade.” I'm not sure where Sony are coming from with this, I mean who wouldn't want the latest and greatest Android operating system on their phone. To add to this users won't even get an update notification on their Xperia phone.

Kitguru says: If Sony can stick to this update schedule it will be an impressive feat.

Sony Ericsson have had a tough run up to the end of the year in 2011, claiming that market competition and the disaster in Thailand have damaged their earnings.

In the three months ending December 31st Sony Ericsson sales were €1.29 billion, down from €1.53 billion in the same quarter year previous. They are claiming a loss of €207 million, from an €8 million profit last time.

Bert Nordberg said in a statement “Our fourth-quarter results reflected intense competition, unfavorable macroeconomic conditions and the effects of a natural disaster in Thailand this quarter.”

This loss has damaged the parent company Ericsson, who hold 50% of Sony Ericsson. They said today that these results will reduce their fourth quarter results by 1.1 billion Swedish Krona.

Sony are paying Ericsson €1.05 billion for their 50% stake in the company and this transaction is going to take place in the coming weeks. While the floods in Thailand will have caused some of the problems, Sony Ericsson have shipped 9 million handsets in Q4 which was a 20% decrease year on year.

The company issued a statement which read “The year-on-year and sequential declines reflect a significantly lower number of feature phones shipped, partially offset by an increase in smartphone shipments.”

Sony Ericsson used a TV commercial last night in the Super Bowl to offer a sneak peak at a new smartphone which is designed for playing video games. This device is called the Xperia Play and looks to be running the Android operating system.

Sony Ericsson have said on their Facebook page that it is going to officially unveil the new smartphone on February the 13th. The phone is expected to the be the first phone to meet the standards of Sony's new Playstation Certified distinction, which is a set of guidelines laid out by Sony to allow Android handsets to play older Playstation games.

The dramatic commercial (seen above) says “the smartphone with everything you need and the one thing you want.”

Last week Sony said they are opening up their game software library to non Sony devices for the first time ever, via an application they are calling ‘Playstation Suite'.

This is a good way to highlight their gaming capabilities and will certainly sell more phones to the gaming audience. The Xperia Play is the first time that Sony Ericsson have worked closely with their Japanese parent company Playstation group on product development.

Other details such as pricing and release dates to the public have yet to be released.

KitGuru says: Will this be a big seller? we certainly think so.
