Sony has today announced the Xperia SL a couple of weeks ahead of its expected announced at IFA in Germany. The Xperia SL is a minor upgrade over the current Xperia S flagship, offering a slightly faster chipset and seemingly not much else.

The dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 processor is now clocked at 1.7 GHz, up from 1.5 GHz. Many people, including myself, would've preferred to see a more powerful chipset but it should be enough for most. Furthermore the Xperia SL will likely be more of a mid-range phone once Sony announces its new flagship later this month.

For the record, there is also a 4.3 inch display with a 1280×720 resolution, 32 GB of non-expandable storage and 1 GB of RAM. It has a 12.1 MP rear camera with 1080p video recording and a 1.3 MP front facing sensor. Software wise, it runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and one would expect an update to Jelly Bean is on its way.

The 144 gram shell is identical to its predecessor and will be offered in a new pink colour, as well as black, grey and white. We don't know where it will be available or how much it'll cost but we should find this out at its more formal unveiling on August 29th.

KitGuru says: The Xperia SL is highly unlikely to retain the flagship status so expect a new flagship Sony to be shown at IFA.

The successor to Sony's current flagship smartphone, the Xperia S, has been leaked and will be known as the Xperia SL. Courtesy of the Chinese website ePrice, some renders and specifications of the device have been revealed.

Externally, the Xperia SL looks much the same as its predecessor. However, it will be available in silver and pink in addition to the existing black and white colours of the Xperia S. The Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 dual-core processor inside gets a boost to 1.7 GHz, up 200 MHz from the Xperia S. While I was hoping I would see a Sony device with the stronger Snapdragon S4 inside it should be more than enough for most users.

Furthermore the SL will debut with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich onboard, and given Sony's dedication to software updates a Android 4.1 update shouldn't be too far away. The rest of the specifications will likely stay the same with a 4.3 inch 720p display and a 12 MP camera.

KitGuru says: While the improvements are welcome, Sony are bringing out new phones which will demote the Xperia SL to a mid-range device.

Sony has already announced the Xpera miro this morning but evidently this wasn't everything they have in hand. They have also just announced the Xperia tipo and the tipo dual. Yes, we have spelt the names right, for whatever reasons Sony has an obsession with lowercase names for their phones.

Sony's Xperia tipo sounds like a decent low-end Android

Starting with the Xperia tipo, it will soon be available in black, white, red or blue. Not much else is known at this stage due to Sony's rather marketing-influenced approach that doesn't really offer any useful information. A newer press release shows that it will have a 800 MHz Qualcomm MSM7225A single core processor. They are claiming 24 hours of constant usage with its rather spacious 1500 mAh battery and Music Unlimited will be present. It will have a 3.2 inch scratch resistant display with a 480 x 320 resolution, a 3.2 MP rear camera and weight just under 100 grams. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will also be present and will the tipo will likely take up the low-end of Sony's Xperia lineup and offer a price tag enticing enough to those new to smartphone.

Switch SIMs with a press of a button

Perhaps the most interesting phone announced by Sony today is the tipo dual. We may be mistaken but this is the first time a major manufacturer has produced a dual SIM phone where SIMs can be switched with the single press of a button. Furthermore, you can set which SIM card to use depending on the time of day and event set up unique ringtones for each SIM. It will be available in both white and black. We would expect the rest of the tipo dual's specifications to be identical to the standard tipo.

Brief videos of the two phones can be found here and here. Both of these devices will go on sale in the third quarter of 2012.

KitGuru says: We don't know anything else about these phones right now but chances are they will be competitive low-end smartphones.

Sony attempted to generate hype around its latest smartphone launch with a countdown timer through Facebook and this was the perhaps biggest giveaway we were given. The Xperia miro was unveiled when the timer hit zero and is a mid-range, social focused Android smartphone – although we don't many signs of that in the material released so far.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQZ8sS-_KvE#!']

The miro itself has a 3.5 inch display with a 320 x 480 resolution is encased in an nice 9.9mm thin shell. Interestingly, the legacy menu key is present and to further complicate things the back key is on the left hand side; away from most users. Inside is a 800 MHz Qualcomm MSM7225A single core processor, 4 GB of internal storage plus a MicroSD slot. It has a 5 MP camera which results in 30 FPS (presumably 720p) video recording. There is also a front facing VGA camera for video calling.

In the video we are told that it can “easily connect and view on any screen” so we are going to assume it supports the usual DLNA, Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth 4.0 and MHL standards. Software wise it will run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with Sony's UXP NXT user interface layered on top.

It will launch later on this year in the third quarter, but no word on regional availability was specifically mentioned but a European launch is likely. The Sony Xperia miro will be available in black, silver, pink and gold.

KitGuru says: Sony knows how to play the low-mid range smartphone game rather well.
