Shuhei Yoshida, president of worldwide studios at Sony Computer Entertainment, compares PlayStation VR platform to the original PlayStation and claims that in 20 years’ time virtual reality experience will evolve as dramatically as 3D games have evolved since the original PlayStation.

“As a developer, I am super-excited about the potential of using VR tech,” said Mr. Yoshida in a interview with Eurogamer. “I feel like, working on PlayStation VR, is like when we were working on the original PlayStation 20 years ago, when we were very excited to use 3D real-time graphics for the games.”

Virtual reality games and entertainment are not expected to take the market by storm overnight due to high prices, limited amount of games and imperfect hardware. However, VR headsets and gamers will gradually evolve and will eventually become much more attractive both for core gamers as well as for casual gamers. In fact, as console and PC hardware is getting more powerful, virtual reality games and other entertainment programs will become more realistic, which will improve user experience and will attract new customers.

“After 20 years, we are still making even bigger, better 3D games, so I see a long-term great future for VR entertainment for the coming 20 years,” added the legendary game developer.

While Shuhei Yoshida mentions the original PlayStation when he talks about 3D graphics in general, it should be noted that the latter has evolved thanks to multiple companies, including a dozen of graphics processor developers (e.g., ATI, Nvidia, Matrox, S3 Graphics, Rendition, etc.), hundreds of software companies and a widespread industry support from all major technology companies.

Today, VR headsets are set to be available from three major players (Oculus VR/Facebook, Sony, Valve/HTC), they will be supported by several dozens of game developers and will address mostly core gamers. While in general industry support for virtual reality is fairly high, it does not seem that there will be a lot of competing products in the market. Competition typically catalyzes rapid evolution and numerous technology breakthroughs. Hence, only time will tell whether the journey of VR will be as incredible as the journey of 3D graphics.

KitGuru Says: It remains to be seen how Sony’s PlayStation 4 will handle virtual reality games. At the end, the system is not very powerful from compute performance standpoint. Nonetheless, it is good to see that Sony knows where the VR could be going in the next 20 years.

When Sony Corp. unveiled its project Morpheus early last year, it was clear that the company was very serious about equipping its PlayStation 4 video game console with a virtual reality head-mounted display. The PlayStation VR device will finally hit the market in 2016 and will be accompanied by a set of games. Unfortunately, the HMD will be expensive and far not all gamers will likely buy it.

Sony is on track to introduce its PlayStation VR headset in the first half of next year, according to Andrew House, chief executive officer of Sony Computer Entertainment. The company does not reveal pricing of its device just yet, but the unit will be priced as a new gaming platform, said Mr. House in an interview with Bloomberg news-agency. Right now Sony PlayStation 4 costs $399 in the U.S. and £299 in the U.K.

The first generation VR headsets are not going to be truly affordable because they will use a lot of custom and expensive hardware. It is expected that Oculus VR’s Rift will cost from $300 to $400. Therefore, it is not surprising that Sony’s PlayStation VR will cost like a PlayStation 4.

Final specifications of the commercial PlayStation VR headset are unknown. The pre-production HMDs that Sony has been demonstrating to public for a while feature a 5.7” OLED panel with 1920*1080 (960*1080 per eye) resolution, 120Hz refresh rate and 100-degrees field of view.

Sony intends to ship more than 10 virtual reality titles for its headset next year. At the Tokyo Game Show the company already demonstrated 10 playable VR titles for its PlayStation VR head-mounted display. The demos included its own RIGS: Machine Combat League, a first person robot shooter, and Square Enix Holdings Co.’s Final Fantasy XIV.

KitGuru Says: As it appears, Sony has no intention to sell the PlayStation VR at price-points below cost in order to popularize virtual reality gaming on PlayStation 4. The reasons for such approach are not clear. Perhaps, Sony does not want to lose money on its headset. Or maybe the company just does not believe that VR in general will gain traction with this generation of consoles and it makes no sense to subsidize hardware.

Sony Computer Entertainment said this week that it would release its virtual reality headset called project Morpheus in the first half of 2016, but said nothing about the price. According to Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony's Worldwide Studios, developing an affordable device was not the goal that Sony’s engineers had. They were told to make the right product so that people could enjoy it.

“The first time people try VR is the most dangerous time,” said Mr. Yoshida in an interview with Polygon web-site. “People get used to it after a while, but the first is the most susceptible to motion sickness. So we want to get the hardware right.”

Technology-wise, Morpheus, which is equipped with a 5.7” OLED panel with 1920*1080 (960*1080 per eye) resolution, 120Hz refresh rate and 100-degrees field of view, does not stand out from other VR headsets, such as those from Oculus VR. It does, however, look good and may even feature some secret sauce that will make it considerably better than the rivals. Still, given its technical specifications, it should not be too expensive, even though Sony claims that it did not really care about it.

“Price has not been driving our development process,” said the president of Sony Studios.

While the development of the headset itself is nearly finished, Sony now has to find ways to sell the product to end users. Sony cannot advertise VR gear using traditional methods or demonstrate its benefits outside of specially equipped showrooms.

“That is the number one challenge, people ask us what is the number one challenge for Project Morpheus? I say get people to try it,” said Mr. Yoshida. “Unless you try it, you do not understand how good or how great it is. The second best thing is to watch people playing it.”

While Sony seems to be optimistic about project Morpheus and virtual reality gaming in general, it clearly omits talking about business goals when it comes to VR. While the success of Sony’s PlayStation 4 is undeniable, only a fraction of PS4 owners will buy a VR headset for many reasons. If the installed base of the project Morpheus is low, not a lot of game developers create titles for it, which means that the product will fail eventually.

KitGuru Says: In fact, in a bid to make PlayStation-only VR headset a success, Sony will have to bundle it with all of its game consoles. Since there are over 20 million PS4s without VR gear already, game developers will design titles primarily for non-VR setups. As a result, virtual reality gaming may not take off with the current-generation consoles at all…

Sony Computer Entertainment unveiled a new prototype of its code-named project Morpheus virtual reality headset at the Game Developers Conference. The new version of the device should improve user experience by enabling improved picture quality and tracking. In addition, Sony said that it will release its VR gear commercially in the first half of next year.

The improved prototype of the project Morpheus VR headset is equipped with a 5.7” OLED panel with 1920*1080 (960*1080 per eye) resolution, 120Hz refresh rate and 100-degrees field of view. The new prototype has added three more LEDs to the headset for a total of nine and now supports 360 degree tracking. Just like the predecessors, the new Morpheus is equipped with an accelerometer, a gyroscope and three-dimensional audio. However, Sony claims that the new one boasts with reduced latency between the physical movement of a player’s head and rendering on the headset’s screen.

Although the new headset features similar design as the original one, it has a number of major improvements, which reduce the pressure on the players’ face and lower the weight of the device. In addition, the new Morpheus prototype is equipped with a single band and a quick release button. The design of the VR headset is still not final.

“With the technical specs achieved on the new prototype, we are one step closer to realizing our vision for making amazing VR experiences on PS4, and ultimately to deliver a real sense of presence to players,” said Shuhei Yoshida, president of SCE worldwide studios. “We believe that the near-final technology of Morpheus combined with the power of PS4 will provide a standard for game developers to target as they build on their creative ideas and turn them into VR games and experiences.”

While Sony announced plans to release tits project Morpheus VR headset in the first half of next year, the company did not disclose when exactly it plans to do this and how much the product is going to cost.

Sony is expected to release its virtual reality headset code-named Morpheus sometimes in 2015. Apparently, the device is nearly ready. Last week the company displayed its VR hardware at the Tokyo Game Show and the product was well received by gamers, which confirms the fact that its development is basically finished.

Shuhei Yoshida, the president of Sony's Worldwide Studios who leads development of the project Morpheus, said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, that the company had “finished 85 per cent of the work needed to make the product available”. Unfortunately, the high-ranking executive declined to say when Sony plans to launch the VR headset and how much it would cost.

Mr. Yoshida confirmed that many components used to build smartphones are also used by project Morpheus, including high-resolution display, sensors for control and other. Usage of components that are already mass produced suggests that the price of the device will not be too high.

While the Morpheus virtual reality headset may be ready, games that take advantage of the VR gear are still in development. It remains to be seen whether Sony and its partners manage to get VR games to the market next year.

KitGuru Says: When it comes to VR, software may be considerably more important than hardware itself. Today only a handful of game developers understand how to design VR games. As a result, it is hard to expect a lot of VR titles next year.
