While Mario Tennis Aces did get given a sizeable platform, revealing all we’d come to know from the leak, it was another title that stole the show. Alongside some surprising ports, Super Smash Bros is finally coming to the Nintendo Switch, and even more shocking is that it’ll arrive this year.

Nintendo had already revealed that Splatoon 2 was set to receive its first single-player expansion, making the trailer of two inklings fighting all the more curious as to what else the company could have in store. Suddenly, the lights turn out and there’s a glint of a fiery Super Smash Bros logo in the inkling girl’s eye, showing us what the trailer is really all about.

Pegged as Nintendo Switch Super Smash Bros shows that this is unlikely to simply be a port of the Wii U version and instead be its own iteration all together. This makes sense when thinking that each console from the Nintendo 64 has had its own version of Super Smash Bros. And with the addition of the inklings, it leaves the question of who else could be joining the roster?

Among the surprising ports is the original Luigi’s Mansion, which will be getting a 3DS remake intended for release this year. The Wii U’s Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is making its way to the Nintendo Switch on July 13th, with added levels based on Super Mario Odyssey. Perhaps the most surprising announcement was South Park: The Fractured But Whole coming to the portable home console too, which should be out on April 24th.

Hyrule Warriors  and indie title Little Nightmares are both dropping on May 18th. Dark Souls Remastered will be dropping with a new Solaire of Astora amiibo, allowing players to praise the sun on May 25th. We knew that Crash Bandicoot was likely to make his way over to other platforms, one of which will be the Switch on July 10th. Just three days later comes Octopath Traveler on July 13th.

A little further down the way is WarioWare Gold which is coming to 3DS with 300 microgames on August 3rd. Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story is getting a remake for 3DS alongside Bowser Jr.’s Story for 2019. And Undertale will “eventually” be headed to Nintendo Switch at some point.

KitGuru Says: While I am thrilled that a new Super Smash Bros is making its way to what would be the perfect platform for it, it is a shame that Metroid Prime 4, the new Pokémon RPG or even a Switch-based Fire Emblem hasn’t seen an announcement. Then again, I’d prefer them to announce things closer to completion rather than years ahead with radio silence. What is your biggest take-away from this Nintendo Direct?

Ahead of South Park: The Fractured But Whole’s release, Ubisoft has detailed what is included its season pass. Purchasing into the pass will grant players access to three lots of major DLC, as well as smaller content available on release.

Danger Deck is the title of the first post-launch DLC, arriving at a currently unspecified point in December. Alongside bringing exclusive unlockable content such as costumes and artefacts, the core portion of the DLC centres around “the ultimate combat challenge against Doctor Timothy's Danger Deck.”

The second lot of DLC is called “From Dusk till Casa Bonita,” which is the first of two currently planned story episodes. Releasing sometime in 2018, the player must “team up with The Coon and Mysterion to defeat a demonic presence at Casa Bonita”.

Ubisoft has kept quiet on its third and final planned DLC expected to arrive later in 2018, giving just the title; Bring the Crunch. This is set to be the second story episode and will introduce a brand new superhero class for the player.

The season pass launches with the game next Tuesday, on October 17th and is available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. Day One DLC included within the pass includes The Relics of Zaron costume and perks pack, while other minor content such as the Towelie in-game tip buddy follows up the week after, beginning October 24th. Pre-ordering the game before its launch also nets the player an instant download code for the first game, The Stick of Truth.

The season pass comes in at $30 with UK pricing yet to be confirmed. Each bit of DLC can be purchased separately, with the Towelie in-game tip buddy coming in at $2, The Relics of Zaron costume and perks pack at $5, Danger Deck at $6 and both story packs at $12 each. This makes buying the season pass a saving of $7 for those that intend to get everything they can from the title, however those who have purchased the Gold Edition of the Collector’s Gold Edition will already have it all included.

KitGuru Says: This has honestly been one of my most anticipated games of the year, with many already describing it as a better RPG than its tamer, accessible predecessor. After games like the Arkham series, in my opinion, mishandling the season pass model and offering very little content within it, I am sceptical but I have faith that the story content in The Fractured But Whole will make it worthwhile. Do you plan on picking up the new South Park game? What do you think of the season pass?

Ubisoft’s South Park: The Stick of Truth was debatably easy depending on who you ask, even on its hardcore difficulty. In a bid to shake things up as well as make a controversial statement in the process, the sequel’s difficulty will get harder depending on your character’s skin colour.

At the end of South Park: The Fractured but Whole’s character creation, the game prompts you to select the difficulty you wish to play at. The player is met with a bar at the bottom of the screen ranging from “easy” to “very difficult.” What’s more is that this bar is a gradient of skin colour that actively changes the look of your character, with the lighter skin colours making the game easier and the darker tones pertaining towards a very difficult game.

When, undoubtedly, pausing in shock, Eric Cartman’s voice ushers in to reassure you that “this doesn't affect combat. Just every other aspect of your whole life.”

Clarifying on this statement, Eurogamer received a response from the Ubisoft developers explaining that this particular difficulty bar affects the amount of money you will receive and character interactions, increasing replay value.

This isn’t the only social commentary that creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker have introduced, as the sequel no longer forces the player to play as a boy. Part way through the game, the option to choose male, female or other is presented, furthered by cisgender or transgender. Since you do play as the same character from The Stick of Truth, counsellor Mr Mackey is used as a device to retcon events that happened to fit the new narrative.

South Park: The Fractured but Whole is due out on October 17th on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

KitGuru Says: I am quite the fan of South Park and its social commentary, leaving me quite excited for the new game. I like the direction of this and the fact that it is giving another platform for such issues to be actively spoken about. Are you excited for The Fractured but Whole?
