Sid Meier is apparently not happy with just going beyond earth and will soon be launching an all out assault on the stars, with 2K and Firaxis announcing their new game, Sid Meier's Starships. Taking to space with a new interstellar strategy game that is set in the same universe as Civilization: Beyond Earth, it should be out for PC, Mac and iPad sometime in Spring 2015.

While it still seems to feature the traditional hexagonal tiles of the Civ series it looks totally different in other ways, seemingly being far more about unit control than cities and permanent bases. The last time that Firaxis took on a new style of game was when they released XCOM: Enemy Unknown, which was released to much praise. Hopefully they can keep up their good track record with Starships as well.

Starships

While we don't know very much about the gameplay yet we do know that it will be a turn based game in which you will have to control a fleet of starships, hence the name. These ships will be upgradable and customizable and will allow you to explore, complete missions and generally keep things under control in your part of the dynamically generated universe. Sid himself said: “My goal was to create an experience that focuses on starship design and combat within a universe filled with interstellar adventure, diplomacy, and exploration.”

Interestingly Firaxis has said that there will be some kind of “cross-connectivity” for players who own both Starships and Civilization: Beyond Earth, adding to the experience of both games. It remains to be seen how this will work and what is will bring to both games. Check out the teaser trailer below.

KitGuru Says: I've spent many hours playing Sins of a Solar Empire and Sword of the Stars II, which both look like they will be similar to this, so the thought of a Sid Meier take on this genre makes me pleased! We should find out more about the game during the week, so lets wait and see what is in store…

Virgin Galactic is set to resume its rocket powered test flights, bringing consumer level space travel closer to reality after remaining fairly inactive throughout 2014. This means that passengers who made a $250,000 reservation to fly into space on a Virgin Galactic flight may not be left waiting too much longer.

The most recent test flight took place on the 2nd of January of this year so quite some time has passed. In May, Virgin announced that it was changing the solid fuel used in the rocket motor due to engine instabilities. The space ships now use thermoplastic polyamide, which performs better and should allow the spaceship to achieve a higher altitude.

Virgin Galactic

Speaking with Space.com, Virgin Galactic CEO, George Whitesides, said: “We've done a lot of development tests over the years, but what we've been doing recently are qualification tests where you're firing the same motor design multiple times to make sure you're seeing the same thing every time. So now we feel ready to put that motor on the spaceship.”

SpaceShipTwo is designed to carry to pilots and six passengers. The ship is now qualified to increase stability from a suborbital flight by rotating its tail and wings. The ship has completed 54 test flights to date but none of these were ran with the new fuel, which has only been tested on the ground so far.

So far, more than 700 people have booked a flight with Virgin Galactic, many of these people are celebrities, which is to be expected considering the high reservation price.

KitGuru Says: It's good to see virgin making headway when it comes to consumer level space travel. However, it's probably going to be a long time before regular people can afford a trip in to space. Would any of you guys take a Virgin Galactic flight in to space?

If you've ever wondered which was bigger, a Gloriana-Class chapter flagship from Warhammer 40,000, or the Galactic Empire's Assertor-Class star dreadnought, or how the Decepticon Nemesis Flagship stands up to the Wayland-Yutani orbital refinery from Alien, then now's your chance, as the world's most comprehensive size comparison chart of fictional space craft has now been ‘completed.'

Completed is in quotations, because the creator has acknowledged that there are some fictional space faring vessels that don't feature on the chart, like the Death Star for example, but as they point out, a line had to be drawn somewhere.

In this latest update, DirkLoechel added ships from Mass Effect, Star Trek, Star Wars, Star Blazers, Halo, Robotech, Freespace, Dune, Transformers, Ulysses 31, StarFox, Freelancer and a lot more. It's an absolutely huge image that those of you with 4k monitors will likely appreciate more than the rest of us, but here it is:

Zooming right in, some of the monstrous ships from some universes look simply miniscule when compared to those of others. The Nostromo is barely a blip on the radar and the Command ships from Starship troopers are almost invisible. Robotinik's Egg Carrier is laughable at this scale.

While there is certainly a lot of information at the smaller ship level though, it is quite amazing to see how some of the biggest compare to one another. Eve probably takes home the title of the largest number of monstrous space craft, but Independence day has the largest in terms of length.

KitGuru Says: Surprisingly, Red Dwarf holds its own on the chart at around 10KM long. That has to be the most sparsely populated of ships on display here.
