Back before Wind0ws 10 launched, there was talk of Microsoft's new browser, Edge, being compatible extensions.  The feature has taken a while, in-fact Microsoft initially planned to include it in November's big Threshold 2 update for Windows 10, but now after a few delays it seems that a release is finally on the horizon.

This news came around thanks to a Microsoft Preview site accidentally going live ahead of schedule, showing that an official release is now pegged for early next year.

Extensions

Edge extensions will likely arrive in a version of Windows 10 Preview prior to its launch, which will allow users to manually download and install extensions, there will also be resources in place to help developers create their own.

A couple of extensions are planned for the preview, including one for Reddit and Pinterest, though there may be more by the time it officially rolls around. Extensions will be put in to the Windows Store and while Edge won't be flat out compatible with Chrome extensions, there will be a porting tool for developers.

KitGuru Says: While Microsoft's Edge browser may be an improvement over Internet Explorer, extensions are a pretty big part of the modern browser experience these days. Have any of you tried using the Edge browser? Is there a browser you prefer?

Microsoft has announced the official name for its new Windows 10 browser today at its annual build conference. The browser has been known as Spartan since its announcement in January but the final version will be called Microsoft Edge.

Alongside the announcement, Microsoft released a video showing off the browser on YouTube. You can watch the video below:

Microsoft Edge

Microsoft is touting this as “the browser built for doing” with its built-in note taking features and Cortana integration. It seems that the Microsoft Edge browser will be compatible with Chrome extensions as well, which will make the switch-over easier for Windows 10 users.

This is still a developing story as all of this is happening live from the conference right now so some details aren't known yet. Microsoft Edge will be a universal app so it may attract the developers looking to create for multiple platforms at once.

KitGuru Says: Many were happy with Spartan being the name for the browser but as we have previously reported, the name was never set in stone and was likely to change. What do you guys think of Microsoft's new name for its browser? Will you try out Edge or will you be sticking with your current browser of choice?

Microsoft has confirmed that it is going to stop using the Internet Explorer brand with the launch of its new browser, currently known as ‘Project Spartan’. This has been hinted at in the past but speaking at Microsoft Convergence yesterday, Marketing Chief, Chris Capossela confirmed it.

“We’re now researching what the new brand, or the new name, for our browser should be in Windows 10. We’ll continue to have Internet Explorer, but we’ll also have a new browser called Project Spartan, which is codenamed Project Spartan. We have to name the thing.”

Internet Explorer will still exist on some versions of Windows 10, mainly for enterprise compatibility purposes. However, Project Spartan will get a new name and will become the primary browser for Windows 10 users, should they choose to stick with it over something like Chrome of Firefox.

Microsoft is currently testing new names for market research. It is possible that the new name for the Spartan browser will be announced at the Microsoft Developers Conference at the end of April.

KitGuru Says: Microsoft couldn’t seem to move past the bad reputation that Internet Explorer had garnered over the years. What do you guys think Microsoft should call its new browser? I actually thought that Spartan would have been a fine name.

Microsoft officially revealed its new web browser, currently code-named ‘Spartan', at its Windows 10 press event earlier this month. Since then, there has been much speculation surrounding the browser's extension compatibility. However, evidence suggests that Microsoft's new browser will support Chrome extensions.

Originally, it was a report from Neowin that suggested that Spartan will either fully support Chrome extensions or use a similar format, allowing for developers to easily port extensions over to the new browser. However, in a recent ‘AskIE' chat on Twitter, engineers did not confirm nor deny company plans for extensions but said more news may come soon.

Spartan

Obviously, refusing to deny that Chrome extensions will be supported is pretty weak evidence on its own but a Pastebin dump seems to line up with the rumors suggesting that we will see Chrome extension compatibility in the browser. The Spartan build pastebin shows an entry calls: “WrapMsBrowserExtensionPageAndBackground.js”, this entry shows similarities between the extension formats and makes mention of Chrome several times.

So far, this speculation is all we have to go on but Microsoft is developing its new OS and its features out in the open this time around, so it probably won't be long before we learn more details.

KitGuru Says: Given that Google Chrome is the most popular browser, making the extensions compatible with Spartan sounds like a good move on Microsoft's part. It will be interesting to see if the company sticks with the name ‘Spartan' as well.

Microsoft kicked off its Windows 10 event this evening, giving us a look at new additions to the operating system, plans for PC gaming and even announcing free upgrades to the new version for those on Windows 8.1 and Windows 7.

Just as the previous rumours suggested, those who own Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 for free for the first year it is released. However, a price after this date has not been announced. This free upgrade system has been put in place to try and fight back against Windows fragmentation, making it easier for developers to deliver apps to everyone on PC.

Cortana for the desktop was officially revealed, she can speak seven languages and even do a pretty good Yoda impersonation. Cortana will appear right on the task bar and can show you pop up notifications, set reminders and even perform tasks on your behalf such as send emails.

Phil Spencer later took to the stage to talk about his plans for PC gaming and further integrating it with the Xbox world. For starters, the Xbox App is coming, which if you read the site regularly you will know already leaked earlier this month. From this app you will be able to record and share gaming clips from any PC game and have voice or video chats with friends on Xbox or PC. It seems that Microsoft wants to make PC gaming a more social experience.

The game DVR feature will constantly be running so if you by chance manage to land an awesome kill streak, you will be able to press Windows Key+G and save that unexpected moment of glory to show off to others.

DirectX 12 made a very brief appearance promising performance boosts as high as 50 per cent, studios like Epic Games and the Unity Engine are already making use of the new API.

Microsoft seems to be opening itself up to the idea of cross play as well, upcoming Lionhead Studios title, Fable Legends will be coming to the PC as well as the Xbox One and will be the first title to support cross play between Windows 10 PCs and the Xbox One, a feature that could be quite exciting if implemented in more titles.

And finally, Microsoft will allow you to stream Xbox One titles to any Windows 10 PC or tablet. In-home streaming has already proven successful on the PC and while its not as good as having a native version of the game built for PC, it will still be nice to play Xbox exclusives on Windows 10.

However, no other details were revealed, we don't know about keyboard and mouse support or WiFi requirements but more information should be revealed at the Game Developers Conference in March.

Microsoft's rumored Spartan browser may be a little more enticing than originally thought as it may include support for Chrome extensions. We may not have to wait long to find out for sure either as the browser is expected to be revealed at tonight's Windows 10 event.

A report from Neowin suggests that the Spartan browser may be fully compatible with Chrome or at least use a similar format, allowing developers to easily repackage extensions for Microsoft's new browser with ease. A Pastebin dump claiming to reveal information on the Spartan build contains an entry called WrapMsBrowserExtensionPageAndBackground.js, which illustrates similarities between the two extension platforms and makes mention of the Chrome browser.

Windows-10

Either way, we will find out in a few hours time at the Windows 10 event, which kicks off at 5pm and will be live streamed on Microsoft's own website. The event will show off Cortana voice assistant integration as well as new Xbox platform support.

Windows 10 will be a cross platform OS, powering Windows mobile, desktops, laptops and possibly even the Xbox One. Microsoft is aiming to fix the mistakes of Windows 8, which took a few too many risks for many desktop users.

According to some recently leaked images courtesy of cnbeta, it seems that Microsoft is exploring a new dark theme for Windows 10 with some very flat iconography. While all we have right now are these photos showing a concept of a dark taskbar with some white outlined icons and the Spartan browser there may be more leaks to come before the Windows 10 preview event on the 21st of this month.

While it is certainly possible in Windows 8.1 to turn your taskbar and window colour black today, when you put this together with the flat outlined icons for both programs and the system tray, as well as the search box for Cortana access right next to the Start button, it does look like quite a dramatic change, even if it isn't that huge. Also worth bearing in mind is the time on the computer that, if correct, indicates that this was taken in July last year, so this may be quite an old and out of date concept and the previews released to Windows 10 testers so far do not have this theme.

windows10
If this high contrast theme is in the works for the final release of Windows 10, which is scheduled for a mid-2015 launch, then hopefully we will know a lot more in 12 days after the day long Windows 10 preview event. This is also likely to include information about several new features, including Cortana the digital assistant from Windows Phone 8, the new Spartan browser and Continuum, a feature that will change the way Windows works when connecting and disconnecting a keyboard.

Continuum has been pretty widely discussed and shown off already, Cortana as well is available on Windows phones today, but the new Spartan browser we know very little about, we don't even know its final name yet. It is rumored to be replacing the Modern or Metro Style full screen IE browser that was included with Windows 8. As the image below shows it will have tight integration with Bing and Cortana that will apparently allow it to be voice controlled as well as knowing about things like your location and schedule.

Spartan Cortana, Bing
Spartan will also include features that allow note taking on web pages so that you can annotate websites and then share them with friends via Onedrive. On top of this there will be a plug-in system similar to Chrome and Firefox that will allow third-party developers to make add-ons for Spartan, something that is not possible with Modern IE today and is very limited in the desktop version. It's also worth nothing that Internet Explorer will not be going anywhere for now due to the requirements of millions of businesses that rely on it for compatibility reasons.

KitGuru Says: In much the same way as Windows 7 was really a relatively small set of changes, made on top of the massive changes that Windows Vista brought, I think that Windows 10 is looking like a set of small changes made on top of the Windows 8 base. As a Cortana user I'm really looking forward to the Cortana integration the most, if it's done correctly it will be amazing. Are you looking forward to any of the changes?
