Despite promises to include local and online co-op with Halo Infinite, a recent roadmap update confirmed that 343 Industries has cancelled split-screen features. This was largely seen as odd, as players have been able to use a glitch to activate split-screen since launch, and the feature seems to work really well even to this day.

After the announcement that split-screen was cancelled a few weeks ago, some of the team at Digital Foundry began investigating. In a new video, they put split-screen co-op to the test across Xbox Series X and Xbox One. On the new-gen system, the game handles split-screen well, with decent visual settings and the option for 60FPS with just a few minor dips. On Xbox One, the game runs at 30FPS in split-screen, but resolution does suffer, often dropping below 720p.

While co-op runs well, there are some issues that players have discovered. The time of day often goes out of sync between the two players in split-screen mode, which isn't game-breaking, but could be distracting. There's also no collision detection for the two Master Chief models, and there are occasional visual glitches in parts of the map.

The video ultimately comes to the conclusion that split-screen co-op is very close to being finished. However, it is worth keeping in mind that 343 likely has a larger team of testers that have uncovered a larger number of bugs that need to be addressed before shipping.

On 343's end, the company did admit that it is shifting resources away from local co-op development in order to speed up development of future seasonal content. However, with players being able to glitch their way into a decent enough local co-op experience, cancelling the feature outright doesn't make much sense.

KitGuru Says: With all of this now becoming public knowledge, hopefully 343 will backtrack. Infinite has had a lot of problems, but if you have a fan-favourite, staple feature of the Halo series working this well unofficially, then there seems to be little reason to pull the plug entirely.

There was once a time when split-screen multiplayer was the only way to play a game with a friend. As the console generations progressed however, the shift for multiplayer gaming and co-op turned to online gaming, with split-screen falling to the wayside. While some games still offer split-screen, it has become the exception, not the rule. It appears that Fortnite is wanting to become the exception too, as it has added split-screen co-op in its latest update.

Fortnite update 11.30 released a few days ago and added various features and changes such as being able to “preview what’s in the Item Shop using your mobile device”, and changing the ammo indicator from a bar to numbers. The biggest feature however is without a doubt, the inclusion of split-screen co-op.

The feature will allow you to “play Duos and Squads with a friend on the same PlayStation 4 or Xbox One”. This means that, split-screen isn’t available on Nintendo Switch, PC, or mobile, although Epic Games has indicated that “this is an early release of Split Screen; we will continue to improve the feature,” meaning that the functionality may eventually arrive on these devices. The feature is currently disabled on PS4 and Xbox due to various issues, although is likely to come back soon.

The split-screen is of course limited to Duos and Squads, where both players will be on the same team. This is to avoid any screen cheating or fixing of games by working together despite being enemies. The feature is unlikely to be added to the solo mode.

Split-screen multiplayer and co-op has become less common over time, as the prevalence of online gaming has made the feature relatively redundant. It is nice however to see that Epic Games is adding the feature for those who want it, joining the likes of Borderlands 3 in keeping split-screen alive in 2019.

Back when 343 Industries was building up to the launch of Halo 5, one of the big negatives against the game was the lack of split screen. Split screen and couch co-op has been a major part of the main Halo games ever since Combat Evolved so quite a few fans of the series were upset by this change. However, it looks like 343 Industries is looking to make things right in the future, promising split-screen support for all future games.

Speaking at the DICE Summit in Las Vegas yesterday, 343 Industries lead, Bonnie Ross explained to the crowd that the Halo team intends to “always have split-screen support going forward”.

Unfortunately, we didn't get much more detail than that. However, it is likely that the upcoming launch of Project Scorpio has helped 343 make this decision. Back when Halo 5 was coming out, the studio explained that technical limitations were holding back a split-screen mode on Xbox One but Scorpio is set to feature much more powerful hardware.

Aside from that, it is likely that the next main Halo game will also come to PC as a ‘Play Anywhere' title, but we are unsure how a PC version would handle split-screen mode at this time.

KitGuru Says: I must admit, one of the main reasons I played Halo back in the day was the split-screen mode, so I am glad to hear it is coming back for the next Halo game. Were any of you disappointed by the lack of split-screen in the last Halo?

Google has gone ahead and dropped a little bit of information about future Android features along with next year's Android update, currently known as Android N. While some apps and smartphone makers, have experimented with split-screen multitasking functionality in Android, Google is going to officially implement it as a feature of the OS for tablet users.

This follows the launch of the Pixel C, which was the first tablet to be designed directly by Google. Unfortunately, while the tablet does come with a keyboard for productivity, the lack of features in the OS hinders Android for those who would potentially want to use the Pixel C as a laptop replacement for work purposes. However, the team behind the tablet know this and are working on it.

Speaking in a Reddit AMA, they discuss future plans to improve things: “We're working hard on a range of enhancements for Android in this form factor. There are many things, like multi-window, that we've been spending a lot of time on — hopefully we can share more about this soon.”

Unfortunately, these improvements might not arrive until the launch of Android N, which was also teased on Reddit: “We're working on lots of things right now for N that, of course, we wish we had, you know, yesterday. But we'd spoil the surprise of N if we shared all of them. Split screen is in the works!”

For the last few years, Microsoft has been doing a great job with the Surface tablet, which offers the full power of Windows in a more portable form and can be used for both entertainment and productivity. Since then, Apple has stepped in with the iPad Pro and now Google is giving this idea more focus, though we may not see things like multi-window support until later next year.

KitGuru Says: The Surface tablet has shown that they can be used for more serious means. However, it seems that a bit more work needs to be done on the Android side for it to catch up. Do any of you use an Android tablet regularly? Do you ever use it for work?

Over the years, Halo has gained a reputation as one of the best ‘couch co-op' shooters around thanks to its split-screen multiplayer. In-fact, it was one of the selling points for the Master Chief Collection last year over on the Xbox One. Unfortunately, split-screen won't be returning in Halo 5 Guardians, news that has disappointed many fans.

However, 343 Industries does have a good, technical reason for the feature being omitted in the latest game in the series. While many fans have been asking for the feature to come back, it simply can't, according to Halo Franchise Director, Frank O'Connor.

Halo5_KeyArt_Horiz_Final

Responding to a tweet that used the hash tag #BringHalo5SplitScreenBack, O'Connor said: “if we could do it, we would do it. But it is what they call ‘nontrivial'”. The technical reasons surrounding the removal of split-screen in Halo 5 were detailed by 343 Industried in a blog post back in July, which said:

“Many of our ambitious goals for Halo 5 would be compromised in a split-screen setting and the time spent optimizing and addressing split-screen-specific issues would take focus from building other parts of the game. Game development is a balancing act of resources, time, and technology, and in this case we made the tough decision to sacrifice something that's been near and dear to us all.”

Even if fans did express their interest in a split screen mode now, the game is approaching the final stages of development over the next two months, ahead of its release in October, so it is likely too late at this point.

KitGuru Says: Split screen has been less of a focus point for developers for quite a while now. Halo was one of the last big franchises to include it but unfortunately, it looks like that will now stop, perhaps if the Xbox One had more powerful hardware, 343 Industries would have been able to pull it off.

Apple is apparently going to bring split screen multitasking to iOS 9, allowing iPhone 6, 6 Plus and iPad users to make better use of their screen real estate by opening up multiple apps at once. If such a feature exists, then we will likely see it for the first time at WWDC in June, when Apple will give developers access to the upcoming version of its software.

According to 9to5Mac, the split screen feature will allow users to place a second app on-screen, taking up either a third or half of the screen. This would work particularly well on the rumored 12-inch iPad Pro, which we have been hearing about for quite some time now.

In addition to this, Apple may be planning to make it easier for families to share a tablet by adding in multiple user accounts, a feature that Android users have been making use of for a while now. Such a feature could also help out businesses or schools as well.

The latest versions of iOS tend to be announced at each year at Apple's World Wide Developers Conference, it is unlikely that tradition will break this year so expect to hear more iOS 9 news early next month.

KitGuru Says: Split screen multitasking would be a particularly useful feature for quite a few people. Do any of you own a tablet? Would you like to have more than one app open on the screen at once?
