Star Citizen's first-person shooter game mode, ‘Star Marine' was announced back in 2014 and since then, we have seen some impressive demos but delays have kept it out of the hands of backers for quite some time. However, this week with Star Citizen's ‘Alpha Patch 2.6.0', players will get their chance to play Star Marine with two maps and modes to choose from.

This patch is rolling out for those in the ‘Public Test Universe' (PTU) now and the notes have been posted online, which read: “Alpha Patch 2.6.0 has been released to the PTU, and is now available for players to test! This patch provides access to Star Marine – with two maps and two game modes to choose from, we hope you’re all as excited as we are for this release!”

Here are the two modes you can play in Star Marine:

  • Elimination, an every-man-for themselves mode where you duke it out for the highest kill-score.
  • Last Stand, where Outlaws and Marines wrestle for control of four key computer access points to earn points for their team. The team with the most points wins!

This patch also brings in four new flyable ships and four new variants of existing ships. There are some known issue with this build though. For starters Star Marine won't have leaderboards or the ability to select loadouts in this build. Lobby Refactor and matchmaking updates are also not present in this specific build but will arrive in the future.

KitGuru Says: We have been hearing about Star Marine for a long time now so it's great to see it finally become playable for those who backed the game. Have any of you backed Star Citizen? Will you be checking out Star Marine now that its playable?

Cloud Imperium Games has had a fairly hectic month. Ever since announcing the delay of Star Citizen's first person shooter module, Star Marine, due to networking issues, the developer has been dealing with complaints online after many sites claimed that the game mode was ‘delayed indefinitely'.

This caused quite a stir as many started to assume that the game mode was months and months away. However, this just wasn't the case, as one of the game's community manager's pointed out recently. Now the studio has confirmed that Star Marine will be available to play in a few weeks time, after Gamescom in August.

Chris Roberts, the driving force behind Star Citizen, told the site Gamers Nexus that Star Marine is just a few weeks off, after the developer shuffled around some resources to have matchmaking and networking issues resolved as fast as possible:

“In reality, we're probably weeks off. We're shooting to have FPS on the PTU round-about Gamescom or slightly after Gamescom. We're really talking about people getting to play FPS in a matter of 3, 4, maybe 5 weeks.”

KitGuru Says: Star Citizen faces a lot of scrutiny, which is largely down to the sheer ambition behind the game, coupled with the fact that regular gamers have pumped over $85 million in to the project long before it is close to finished. Have any of you backed Star Citizen? Will you be checking out the Star Marine game mode when it eventually launches?

Star Citizen is the most successful crowd funded game ever and it isn't even out yet, which leaves a lot of room for concern and worry amongst fans when things get delayed. A short while back, Cloud Imperium Games announced that it would be delaying Star Marine, the first person shooter section of Star Citizen after it ran in to issues mainly pertaining to matchmaking and networking.

This news came quite a while after the module had missed its release date. Some took this to mean that the module was “delayed indefinitely”, which has caused some concern amongst backers. Fortunately enough, Star Citizen's director of community engagement, Ben Lesnick, has responded to these concerns, saying that the phrase “delayed indefinitely” does not apply here, Cloud Imperium just doesn't have a release date nailed down just yet for its FPS module, though it has thrown more resources at its development.

“The short story is that Star Marine was not ready for launch when we had hoped and planned. We spent several weeks expecting that resolving a then-current crop of blockers would allow a PTU publish. When this didn't happen, we conducted a full review of the module lead by our top technical folks from around the company. What they determined was what you read in Chris Roberts' letter two weeks ago: we need to rebuild several ‘boring' backend pieces and we need to fix serious animation issues before there would be any benefit to a release”.

The Star Marine delay won't amount to “months/years” we will still see the FPS section of Star Citizen release this year, we just don't know exactly when. In this instance, delays are smart, after all, Cloud Imperium Games has a lot of pressure to make this game right and to make sure it is good, especially after backers pumped $85 million in to the project, a number that is constantly rising on a daily basis.

KitGuru Says: Cloud Imperium Games has been very open throughout the development process of Star Citizen so far, though it seems there are still plenty of doubts over whether or not the developer can pull this game off with all of the announced features. Do any of you happen to own Star Citizen already? Are you holding off until the game is finally done?

Star Citizen, the largest crowd funded video game effort to date has been under development for some time now, with Robert Space Industries giving backers regular updates on the development process and roadmap to release. So far, the game has been released in modules, with the first person shooter module being one of the most anticipated.

Unfortunately, the ‘Star Marine' FPS game mode has been delayed as it “doesn't live up to the standards” that the development team wants to achieve with Star Citizen. In a new update on the RSI website, Chris Roberts explained: “There are several issues that will need additional time in order to deliver the first iteration of the gameplay we want you to experience. The challenges facing the FPS launch are a mix of technical blockers and gameplay issues.”

Apparently the largest technical hurdle right now is the networking backend, essentially some legacy code has been dropped and the matchmaking system and the game launcher are being rebuilt from scratch.

It is clear that the complications are significant as the Star Marine module was supposed to launch after PAX East in April. Now, there is no estimate for when the new game mode will launch for backers, although the studio has placed additional resources on that side of the game.

One thing Roberts was keen to point out is that a two month delay on the Star Marine module does not equal a two month delay on Star Citizen as a whole. The studio has a bunch of separate teams all working on different project modules at once and it seems that Roberts thinks things will be back on track soon enough.

KitGuru Says: Star Citizen is a huge project so we likely won't see the game finished for quite some time. However, getting the FPS module right will play a big role and will hopefully end up being worth the wait for those who have backed the project and are waiting for some new gameplay.
